We don't envision season 5 right when we talk because what is that actually gonna be like? This isn't a romcom. Mike finds out about the painting but Will is like throwing up blood and slugs in the corner.

edit: to clarify I wasn't saying "no time for romance" I was saying "it's horror show with raises stakes and angst. Mike will have to figure out how to bring up this truth bomb he discovered when more important things are clearly going on and there aren't the most conversational opportunities". I mean MORE juice, not less.

Hello 🌈 what is your favourite thing about the relationship between Mike and Will in the show and what are some of your favourite moments between them? How do you think the love confession will play out next season?

Hi there! :) Thanks so much for asking, I love rambling about them lol. What initially drew me to the pairing and really keeps me invested is the level of trust between them. They’re able to be vulnerable with each other in a way they can’t with anyone else in the show, and this is highlighted in the first episode when they’re given the first proper one-on-one scene of the entire series. Will can’t lie to Mike, and even though Mike knows that he doesn’t take advantage of it— Will just offers up the truth on his own because that’s how they are. The pattern of shared trust continues throughout the second season and even the third— even when they’re arguing, Mike and Will are being as honest as they can.

My favorite moments have to be the Crazy Together scene and their heart-to-hearts in Season 4. Season 4 especially shows us how much they’ve both grown in their time apart; Will listens to Mike agonize over El with a patience he didn’t have in Season 3, and Mike is making a concerted effort to make Will feel like an equal again.

And to answer your last question, I’m not totally sure IF a love confession will play out— the Duffers love to show, not tell with their more serious couples: Lucas and Max never confessed, but we saw their love in their actions all throughout Season 4. The same goes for Hopper and Joyce. I think they’ll follow the same formula with Mike and Will. It will feel more natural and genuine to the audience because if it mirrors the other couples in that way. Mike’s confession to El was entirely performative (he loves her, just not romantically), so it wouldn’t feel very sincere to have him confess in words to Will or vice versa. I think the reveal will need to be shown in a very irrefutable way, though. Thanks so much for sending this in, it was fun to answer!! <3

I think Mike and Will’s first kiss should be in a quiet moment with little to no stakes — just a gentle, yet emotional, “hey, I want you to know how I feel” kind of moment. I think it would really showcase how different their relationship is from Mike and Eleven’s because Mike’s big, romantic moments with her tend to be dire or frustrating. His love for Will has never been like that. Sure, there have been dire circumstances, but even in those moments, love was soft and unprompted.

ok so i talked to a professional lighting designer i know and here’s what’s going on with the picture:

basically sets will use a key light that will highlight the subject of a scene. this light is normally yellow in tone and the brightest one on a set. you can see here its coming from the upper right corner and making the girl’s hair and shoulder the most highlighted part of the shot and also very yellow in tone. she is most likely standing in will’s light, preventing him from being properly highlighted.

now, to ensure that that bright yellow light doesn’t over expose the shot, another light needs to counteract it. it needs to create a shadow for the highlight to contrast with. this is called a fill light. because the key light is yellow, the opposite color will be taken from the color wheel to contrast it: blue. this is why will looks so pale, the blue tones of the fill light are the only thing shining on him due to her blocking him from the key light. the fill light looks like its coming from the opposite direction as the key light thus she is not obscuring him from it.

this would also explain what looks on the surface to be mistakes in makeup application. stranger things is netflix’s darling, they have good makeup artists!! they wouldnt just not apply makeup under his bangs or around the collar of his shirt!! this is just the result of where she isn’t blocking the key light contrasting with the fill light that he’s mostly bathed in.

the reason the lighting looks so dramatic is because the white balance in the picture was likely off due to this being a paparazzi photo where they were unaware of the lighting conditions, whereas that’s something they adjust to using the filming cameras when they know what lighting to expect.

ok i just finished volume 2 and i’m seeing a lot of pessimism on the dash…. yes, we got less than we were expecting. but we called ourselves delusional bylers, we knew we were never going to get as much as we wanted! but i really do believe we shouldn’t be so quick to jump to conclusions about byler based on what we got. mike, will, and el’s arcs are FAR from over, there is so much that’s going to happen in season 5. you can’t quit on them when we’re this close! i truly think they were setting byler up this season. they’ve made will’s sexuality crystal clear without having to explicitly say it, they’ve made his feelings for mike clear, and they’ve given mike a bunch of bullshit that’s gonna come out as bullshit in season 5. i mean yes, of course, he loves el and cares about her so much. but this whole season he was going on and on about being afraid el wouldn’t need him anymore. that’s not love, that’s mike’s trademark. he’s a leader, he’s useless without someone to take care of. he’s always been afraid of el becoming independent because it means he’ll have to become independent. season 5 will bring their independence, and with it, clarity on who mike really is. i really hate seeing people talk about getting queerbaited by the duffers, because it’s just not true!!! they’re good writers, they’re not going to spell it out for you in big red lettering that this is the direction they’re going in. you have to, as we have been doing this entire time, read between the lines! most of what happens in this show is subtext, and that didn’t change with volume 2. i know it’s hard, but we need to have some faith instead of writing them off before season 5 is even out yet

I could see Mike doing his own version of the van scene/Will's painting confession in S5 where, because he is a writer, he tells a little story but it's clear to us and Will that the characters are stand-ins for their own relationship and reveals his feelings for Will.
