I remember running a terrible Zoostorm laptop when I was 12 and It had 1GB of RAM in a time when machines came with at least 2 as a standard option, and some people believed that you'd never need more than 4GB for anything.

My parents bought me this thing because I had caused a little bit of an issue in our house, and that was my constant need for floppy disks post year 2000. We ran an Amiga 1200 in the dining room of our home as it was what my parents both used to code on in the mid 90's. We had tons of software for that thing but the coolest by far was a programming environment called AMOS. It used a proprietary (read: now unsupported) programming language called AMOS BASIC and the only resources we had for the language was whatever my dad remembered and the official language guide which, if i remember correctly, was thick enough to beat a goat to death with.

The guide was sometimes really good at explaining language features and best use cases for mid 90's game development methodologies.

You can actually still download AMOS and run it on a Windows machine, or OSX and GNU/Linux if you have the tools to run applications meant for windows.

I moved from an Amiga sporting 2MB of chip RAM and 8MB of fast RAM to a Windows 7 laptop with a whopping, for the time, Gigabyte of Random Access Memory.

I couldn't wait to see the types of software that I could make with 32 bit technology and how I could use new... Oh, it crashed.

Windows 7, at least on my machine, was a garbage fire. Somewhere along the way when we transitioned from floppy disks to hard drives and hard drives to solid state, programmers suddenly forgot how to make good decisions. The amount of driver errors, lag spikes, and crashes I experienced on that platform made me hate Windows, and even to this day, I really don't trust it.

I once turned my laptop on to find Windows using 90% of my available RAM, and it wasn't even running anything.

This frustration led me to look further afield. I knew that I liked the UNIX like systems from helping my dad run a FreeBSD server, and because of that, I very nearly bought a mac. Nearly. I still like to have a usable computer and do things that Apple don't want me to do, like change my settings in a way that matters.

I finally found out enough to flash Arch to my USB drive and install it using a guide i found on a reddit thread. after editing all of my settings, i pressed enter, sat back... And bricked the fucking thing. Archinstall was a blessing from the gods, but we didn't have that yet.

2nd choice was Debian. Not only was it pre-configured out of the box, it had a package manager that made sense and came with development tools already built in. I played around with a few other distributions over the years until i discovered that they're all either Debian or Arch with a different package manager and desktop environment.

GNU/Linux blew my mind. The fact that all of this software was just out there for free fort anybody to use and change astounded me, and it still does to this day. You need to run a piece of hardware that nobody has made a driver for in about 20 years? Debian probably has it built in. You want to make video games? Debian can do that flawlessly. You want to play video games? Steam installs natively and comes with Proton!

By the time I was ready to go to College at 16, I was using Linux full time, and Archinstall had been added to the installation ISO (thank god). I used arch for all of my studies there, and all of my studies at University. I passed my degree because my software was free. I even had a C# compiling and running for my Programming 101 classes.

I do occasionally run Windows at some point from time to time, but i always make sure that WSL is installed. I do not see the need to download a piece of software to do something when Debian has the command built-in.

If it were not for the FOSS community, and GNU/Linux as a whole, I probably would not be the programmer that I am today, and I wouldn't have been able to learn many of the complex topics I needed for the field I have worked in due to the closed, corporate nature of the vast majority of software out there.

okay so eros originally started out as just c!ranboos mom but then i gave her a bit of backstory and it spiraled from there. uh spoilers for the results of the poll btw. (its also kinda long)

so eros is the goddess of love & has domain over war. war does not have a specific deity because it is so complicated. instead, three gods with related domains (what the deity is in charge of) reside over it.

eros came about as the result of The Big War (i haven't decided on a name yet) which was a war between Hysteria (god of the mind, soul, emotions, humanity, etc) and The God of Flesh, Bone, and Blood (not techno !!! just the god itself). They've always had a hatred for each other, and it ended up in a war that lasted like. thousands of years. At this point, humanity was long gone, most animals & plants were dead, other deities were suffering, and the Nether & the Overworld were in ruins. The two gods planned a last fight to the death (at the pressure of other gods who wanted the war to be over) in the Overworld, and they decided on a piece of land that was covered in apocalyptic snow/ash (pure white). They fight and blah blah it takes so fucking long. Finally, Hysteria and the Blood God draw blood at the same time, and that blood mixes with the snow. At this point, they are both tired, and they aren't quite sure of their hatred anymore. Its the end of the world, and they are fighting, but they were created together and they must work together. So, at this moment, a new god was born !!!! This god was Eros, who's appearance created a true between her parents and started The New Timeline (as the old world was unsalvageable).

Eros was created as a teenager, so she could take care of herself. However, she did not have any experience, so she didn't make the best of decisions. She was very lonely, as she longed to experience love. She could not get it, because Hysteria was much too busy overseeing the progress of humanity, and had many, many children, so Eros did not stick out. She was normally much too scared to go see the Blood God, as they were scary and closed off. So, she wandered the Earth, typically sticking to the Overworld.

Eventually, she figured out that "hey, my parents are the two other war gods! if i start a war big enough, i can make them pay attention to me and we can hang out and be a family !!!" so she does that. and it does work! so she does it again. and again. and again.

During this time, Eros has also started several cults to do her bidding. She was hoping for maybe some semblance of love from them, and she did get it, but it wasn't very good. But she didn't have anything else, so she kept them.

After a big ass war that had horrific consequences, some other gods popped in and was like. "hey can u tone it down a bit? I'm tired of rebuilding entire forests and shit because of u." and she was like sure. yeah. okay.

So, she turned over a new leaf ! She started finding other ways to experience love. she stopped her hardcore cults and started gather small groups that weren't like. terrifying and scary and were more like just friends. she tried to disguise herself as mortal to make friends, but it hurt way too much when they died.

Around this time, she just started messing with people. (btw, the New Timeline is our world.) She would disguise herself as mortal and become a famous fashion designer (she did this several times), or pretend to be a noble to get into a royal ball (and then reveal herself and freak everyone out). She liked to dance, sing, and model the most.

One day, while exploring with her cultists (around human maturity 21-23???), she found an end portal ! having never seen one before, she went in. there, she was greeted by the newly crowned Queen Erebus (queen of the endermen).

They fell in love !!!!! awww i love them !!!!

As queen, she often volunteers with projects, and creates many charities and arts programs. She doesn't do much of the queen duties, but she will help out if erebus needs it.

Erebus was the one to bring up the idea of a child, but eros was the one to find the ritual to make it happen.

When the Collision happened (worlds smashed together , creating multiple servers (so things such as MCC can happen) which reseted the timeline) several gods were spontaneously created, one of which closed off the end (right as ranboo had fallen through the portal lmao). As such, she has mourned and studied (along side z) to find a way to reopen the end.

I always know I need these concerts, but damn... given how the last couple of weeks have been going, Spouse and I definitely needed a brief weekend jaunt away from our jank-ass apartment, our massive to-do lists, this weird little town, the cat (lol we love her, I swear), and the endless stream of bad news. I'm sad we can't do all three of the "Four Nations, Three Divas" series but I'm glad we got to do one, at least.

This concert program is ostensibly based around the soprano Elisabeth Linley and functions as a snapshot of the London music scene in the mid- to late-1700s, which was quite a cosmopolitan place. England at this time is trying to ignore French tastes to varying degrees of success, but there's a demand for Italian opera and imported Italian music masters, and there are a lot of prominent German and Austrian musicians visiting and living in the city.

Music history classes are often centered around the biographies of particular individual composers, which is great for a close look at the development of an artist over the course of their life but sidelines the connections between different musicians that forged the musical style of a given place and time. I love the idea of a concert program that highlights those connections between artists of a particular era and place. I am amused though by how the ghost of Mozart hovers in the periphery of this program, via his friendships with J. C. Bach and Joseph Haydn, through his jam session with Thomas Linley the Younger (and Linley himself being referred to as "the English Mozart"), and also through Johann Peter Salomon, who had invited both Haydn and Mozart to London but only got Haydn because of Mozart's untimely death. I feel that absence of Mozart in this concert more than I do the presence of Elisabeth Linley, but that's my bias.

First up was a young Mozart's arrangement of J. C. Bach's Concerto in G major. I've usually heard it with the keyboard part played on a piano; hearing it with a harpsichord makes it sound older, but also even sweeter (it's already an adorable bonbon of a piece). I feel like maybe Olivier was trying to temper some of the sweetness with a little sass for the Mozart vibes, and I'm not sure if I prefer that to just letting it be sweet and tender. I also don't entirely trust my own perceptions here, as I was still coming down from the adrenaline dump of being late and having to do the Walk of Shame in front of all the musicians on incredibly loud floorboards.

Next was Pascale Beaudin in the spotlight with a scene from Handel's opera Semele. Because I was late, I likely missed the context for including extracts of this in the program (Holy fuck, I still feel SO. BAD. About that.) Handel's very limited run of Semele lands a little earlier on the timeline than the rest of the pieces featured, but the somewhat-scandalous plot of the opera resonates with the somewhat-scandalous love life of Elisabeth Linley herself, so that's my guess. Pascale is such a blast to listen to in person. Also, like... I don't normally do this but I need to shout out that! dress! she was wearing with the Empire silhouette and the distressed lace skirt, all in black--amaaaazing. It made my little Goth heart so happy. High-five for joining me in wearing the wrong decade to these concerts!

Third was J. C. Bach's Quartet in C major for flute, violin, viola and cello. The flute/string quartet format without continuo is not a super popular ensemble configuration, but J. C. Bach and Mozart both wrote for it. To me, those pieces feel like peak galant style, simple and clear. The flute does a lot for that effect, I think, just because of its ability to cut through the timbre of the strings. Spouse mentioned to me that he's always really happy when they can pull in Charles Brink on flute--I was a little surprised to hear this from him, although perhaps I shouldn't be? I guess you're in Flute Gang for life, lol.

Thomas Linley the Younger's "Tune, Philomel" is the piece in this program that's completely new to me and it has been an earworm in my ear ever since this performance! I am apparently a sucker for 17th and 18th century English songs (you don't say, Marve...) and I. fucking. love. this piece now. It's like freebasing the English countryside in a song and Pascale sang it with all the ebullient enthusiasm of Show White romping through an apple orchard, birds and rabbits following her. Why is this like catnip to me. (Thomas Linley the Younger, btw, is Elizabeth Linley's brother, a violin prodigy and composer who tragically died very young. This was clearly a musically gifted family but they had an asshole of a Stage Dad. Another Mozart parallel.)

After intermission (which I ended up spending entirely on the art displays and meeting the artists) was a second aria from Semele, "Oh Sleep Why Doest Thou Leave Me". Another song that is evocative of something pastoral, and it has a sweet innocence to it--although given the plot of this opera it's hard not to be like, "girl, RUNNNN" because you know what's coming.

Last on the program was Hadyn's Symphony #98, one of the 'London Symphonies', notable for being written in the wake of Mozart's death. The second movement is strikingly Mozart-esque, borrowing from his Coronation Mass and the Jupiter Symphony for a moving and hopeful tribute to a friend and beloved colleague. The twist here is that this is the symphony arranged down for four strings, flute, and keyboard by Johann Peter Salomon, the German violinist and impresario. In this form, it takes on an entirely different character from the large orchestral setting, becoming more intense, more personal, allowing the small ensemble to play with timing and rubato more than a large group would. Olivier was straight-up channeling Salomon here, leading with the fiery gusto of a concertmaster plus the entire first violin section. Ironically, I think the second movement lost a bit of its tenderness in this pared-down version but gained something a little more bittersweet. With the frolicking fourth movement, they really played with the timing to the point of comedic effect, much to the delight of the audience.

Okay, I have written far too much on this and I gotta finish unpacking. But seriously, go listen to the Four Nations Ensemble either out in Hudson or in NYC this spring. Go in my stead!

A powerful duo have risen to the top, beating everyone that challenged them. They consist of the programmer Link, under the alias of C-Mod and the gamer Zelda, under the alias of WiseGamer69. Link is the more level-headed of the team, perfect for a modder who needs concentration. Zelda is, as expected from her name, the more wild of the two. The duo have never met irl before, nor do they know their names. Zelda is especially scared that once her teammate learns she is the princess, he'll get mad at her for being deceptive. They can't worry about that however, as a malicious virus called D3M153 created by a recently infamous hacker that goes by the name of xXGanonDorkXx has incapacitated Zelda during a practice session. Bedridden and unable to play as the gamer, Link and Zelda have to switch roles. It's immediately an uncomfortable and less successful duo, throughout the adventures between both the virtual world and the real world, armed with his trusty holospear (an advanced sheikah spear) and the help of a newbie modder, Link grows into his courage as the hero and Zelda grows into her wisdom as the advisor for Link, their duo becomes powerful even with such a drastic change in roles. Eventually, xXGanonDorkXx reveals Zelda's identity to not only Link but to the world. The heir to the throne of the kingdom of Hyrule being a challenger in these competitions leaves a horrible taste in the mouth of the other countries participating in the challenge. Almost no-one wants to help the duo anymore besides 2 other teams. A team from one of the less influential countries, the United Provinces of Koridai and Gamelon, and the first team to be composed of two members from two different countries, one from Labrynna and one from Holodrum. These three teams have to unite to defeat the virus that not only threatens to rip the virtual world apart polygon by polygon, but also threatens to take control of every piece of sheikah tech using code infused with malice itself. Due to the princesses' access to the royal treasury, Link is able to access the master sword, kept from the prying eyes and hands of the public, and use its holy power to destroy the code and malice it one fell swoop.
