@sclfmastery has found the student on the run...
"Here."
Bill set the mug down in front of him, and put the still hot porcelain teapot beside it. Then she sat down next to the Timelord, avoiding his gaze. The mugs were chipped, and the tea set didn't match... but the routine was familiar. And for once, the tea didn't taste like reheated bile.
"... ready to try again?"

Interview: Philip Bates on Companions -- More Than 60 Years of #DoctorWho Assistants
Now available from Candy Jar, Companions: More Than 60 Years of Doctor Who Assistants is an in-depth guide to every companion to have accompanied the Doctor in the programme’s long history. The DWC’s own Philip Bates is the writer tasked with updating Andy Frankham-Allen’s 2013 original – no small undertaking considering this latest volume includes all the new companions introduced since then,…

Rating: Teen And Up Audiences Archive Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply Fandom: Doctor Who Ship: BillMissy Additional Tags: Mind Control Aftermath & Recovery, Consensual Mind Control, Teaching, Post-Episode: s10e08 The Lie of the Land Wordcount: 275 Summary:
Missy will teach Bill things the Doctor won't.
Prompt:
"Giving you a rarepair to do some hurt/comfort with. Bill/Missy"
Missy scares Bill.
That fear is so solid. Unmistakable, unchangeable. She feels it in her bones. Time could twist around them all again, and Bill would still know that she should be terrified of Missy. Fear lies on the other side of love to keep her mind safe, her memories grounded. She shouldn't need that anymore—the Monks are gone, the Doctor has promised: never again, but Bill still wakes up some days unsure of whether she'll go outside and recognize her world.
Missy presses her nails into Bill's arms as she grips them tightly. It hurts. Bill lets it come out in a hiss between her teeth.
Missy is real and dangerous in ways that cannot be erased. That cannot ever be mimicked.
And there are tricks Missy knows about Bill's mind that no one else will teach her, not even the Doctor.
"Good girl," Missy says. "You have more talent than most of the pets he picks up. Without even shouting nursery rhymes at me." Her mouth curls into a smile, until Bill can just see her teeth glint beneath. "Now, fight me out of your mind again." She leans in closer to promise, "If you can keep me out, nothing in the universe will ever touch you."
Her nails claw into Bill's arms again as an impossible force presses down on her will, her memories, and Missy's eyes are dark as space and as easy to suffocate in. Bill doesn't look away. She prepares to hold out, as long as she can, until the day that she wins. If she has to do it shaking with fear, then that's still a victory.
(Enjoyed it? Any interaction is welcomed. You can even support me on Ko-Fi <3)

I haven't seen chibnall but I have a hard time imagining being worse than moffat. I'm sure it's possible but that man... he was bad. also out of curiosity what's the problem with eccleston? or did you just use his name as a reference for which era was rtd. feel free to ignore this if you like, I hope you have a good day!
hellooo!
look, you won't hear me arguing moffat wasn't bad but believe me Chibnall was worse. He wrote an entire sequence where the Doctor tricks the Master (then played by British-Indian actor Sacha Dhawan) into being caught by the Nazis, knowing what the Nazis would do to him. Like, the Doctor, presenting as a white woman, handed over the Master, her best friend presenting as a Brown man to the most notorious white supremacist regimes in history. And that moment was framed as a successful ploy!! As a "win" for the Doctor.
I'm sorry but, to me, Moffats fucking decrepit cringe Gen X Misogyny did nowhere near as much damage as thoughtlessly portraying the Doctor as someone who will literally use Nazism against a poc and framing it as clever girlboss behaviour. Like, it's not fun that these are the people we have to choose from but one of these things is not like the other.
As for the Eccleston stuff, I was referring to Christopher Eccleston's conflict with the BBC and by extension implied conflict with RTD. The full details of the conflict have never been fully made public but Eccleston has always maintained he quit the show due to the culture created by the show runners and producers. He's said he'd never work with RTD again. Eccleston implied that one of the reasons the relationship between himself and RTD broke down was Eccleston's desire for the Doctor to be a role model whose intellect wasn't inherently tied to being upper class English and had to really fight to use his natural accent. It's worth noting that the we wouldn't have a Doctor without an RP (received pronunciation) accent again until Capaldi. David even mentioned Russell's "enthusiasm" for DT to speak in RP not his natural accent in his interview with Jodie in 2020.
I want to believe that RTD has grown since the mid 00s, and perhaps this time around things will be different. But I think a lot of people point to Moffat as the worst because his bigotry is the most visible and easiest to critique. It's more popular and acceptable to critique sexism against white women than it is to critique racism and classism. But in reality all of these showrunners are white British men who have pulled white British bullshit and I won't stand for Chibnall and Davies shortcomings being scapegoated via Moffat.
Also, this is not a defense necessarily but a lot of people who hate moffat era who did NOT watch Capaldi's seasons and did not watch season 10 with Bill Potts. So their critique often lacks the perspective of Moffat's best season that proves he's capable of writing something genuinely compelling that's not gross and sexiest. Like it genuinely infuriates me when people talk about "moffat who" but they're only really talking about Matt Smiths seasons. Again none of that is a defence but it's just to say that most people who say Moffat is the worst are people who a) are really talking about Sherlock, which, fair enough that was shit b) people who just think 10th Doctor best Doctor and don't actually care about anything after that era in any meaningful way. Or c) people who have a pretty incomplete view of the series was and where it currently is.
omg this is long sorry I hope I don't sound rude I'm not trying to be I just have so many thoughts about this. I hope this answers your question, please let me know if I need to clarify anything <3

Fifteen Questions for Fifteen Mutuals
@actual-bill-potts Thanks for tagging me, and sorry it took so long for me to answer!
Are you named after anyone? My first name is inspired by a well-known movie character, but it’s also a somewhat normal name so it’s not really obvious
Do you use sarcasm a lot? Not on purpose, but sometimes people interpret comments that way since i’m not really good at tone/expressions
When was the last time you cried? about a week ago
What's the first thing you notice about other people? Physically - defining features like hair/eyes/height. Personality-wise - depends on the person, but usually something related to how they interact with people
What sports do you/have played? I play badminton once in a while, but nothing regularly
Eye color? dark brown
Any special talent? I can whistle this one specific bird sound that makes the local birds not run away when I approach.
Scary movies or happy endings? I don’t watch movies, but books wise I’m going with dramatic ending
Do you have any pets? Not anymore :(
What are your hobbies? Reading (mostly Silm/BoLT currently, but I tend to like fantasy & sci fi in general), drawing, needle felting occasionally
Favorite subject in school? science/biology, specifically microbiology and genetics
Dream job? Realistically, successful dentist (probably general) Idealistically, c. elegans dauer diapause research
(I don’t usually answer questions related to real life identifying features online, so here’s some alternative questions to get to 15 total questions if that’s ok!)
---
Something you collect? fun keychains
Analog or digital clocks? analog
Random superstition/habit? i always do lineart on the 5th layer regardless of total layer count
---
Tagging @sakasakiii, @leucisticpuffin, @mahtaniel, @caenith, @mirillel (no pressure, sorry if you’ve already done this!)

TIME TO SPEW OPINIONS (Companion Edition):
Rose was a great companion who worked really well with 9 and 10. Her personality really helped exaggerate the Doctor's sass and later his emo-ness as 10. She was super brave and very willing to act on her beliefs. (even standing up to the Doctor)
Martha was unfortunately overshadowed in the Doctor's mind by the loss of Rose (L) but she is a GREAT character who had strong opinions and wasn't afraid to tell the Doctor he was wrong or fucked up.
Donna was a great partner to the Doctor with their bickering back and forth. She would readily challenge him but would also play off of him with her own specializations (The calendar in The Doctor's Daughter, The planets in the stolen planet bits)
I have my own issues with Moffat's writing so I'll leave out things that I believe to be "Moffat Issues" and not individual character issues.
Amy was an interesting character who seemed to understand the Doctor more than some of the other companions. This, combined with the new lease on life that was the 11th Doctor really let Amy be both serious and goofy playing off of the silliness of the Doctor.
Rory felt like kind of a side note until he died the first time. When he came back he was a main character kind of guy. His main priority was always Amy, even when there was other things going on, and I REALLY like him.
River isn't really a companion, she's more of a side character. River feels like she was kind of shoehorned in to some of the Doctor's lore in earlier seasons, but by the time she arrived in the Capaldi era for the Christmas special it felt like she was actually someone that the Doctor would like. Before then it almost felt like she was just there for drama. Her appearance in Silence in the Library was interesting and made her character someone to be excited for, but her appearance in The Impossible Astronaut felt kinda of dramatic for me. (not that drama is a bad thing, just my preference) I'm not really a fan.
Clara... I've written essays on why I don't like Clara's character. I think she's well written, especially when we get into series 8 territory, but I also very much HATE her as a person. Her struggle with 11's regeneration is understandable, but the way she treats 12 hurts me a little bit. The 12th Doctor definitely doesn't help Clara's ego when he makes her choose things for the entire planet Earth (Kill the Moon) but by the time Dark Water rolls around her ego is so big it could have BEEN the moon. Spoilers BTW: Oops her boyfriend dies. She's like "OH, I have a time travelling friend I love and care about, he has nothing to do with anything related to this horrible thing that just happened to me so let's threaten to strand him on this planet forever if he doesn't help me undo an event that I already witnessed" What in her mind tells her to do this. I get it, you're mentally ill and grieving. I hate her. Not only did she think of the idea of stranding him on Earth to be fine, but she also TRIED. She tried to drug him and strand him. The idea that he was ok with that kind of put me off a bit. Him forgiving her aside, she also told him that anything Missy did ever was his fault, which is INSANE. I know Missy did some terrible shit to her boyfriend but Clara using this to guilt the Doctor into MURDERING Missy is insane. If she had a spine, she would have done it herself before he got in between them. Anyway I'm glad she died of her hubris. (I could go on)
Bill Potts is my scrungly and she was SO perfect for the 12th Doctor. Their conflict in Thin Ice really nailed down how different the Doctor is from their human companions and emphasized that he's not morally perfect all the time. His hands aren't clean and she knows that, but she also knows that he has good hearts and wants the best for humanity. They have a very grandpa/granddaughter kind of thing going on, which I think works super well with the grumpy 12th Doctor. They're fun, they get along, and in the end it's the Doctor's confidence in his own ability that gets her killed (at first). Bill did nothing wrong ever.
Graham and Ryan are generally ok. I'm putting them in one section because I don't really feel much about either of them. They each have like 3 character traits and nothing else. I feel ways about Chibnall's writing, but I feel like the crowded TARDIS was a bad idea and if it was going to be crowded I might have preferred that Grace be there. I don't dislike Ryan or Graham but a lot of the things they do (particularly Ryan) seem to be for the plot and have nothing to do with their personalities. In the first two episodes Ryan shows some impulse control issues, (touching a shiny alien thing in the woods, and running out to shoot robots with a gun). Graham shows some anger management issues when it comes to emotional things a couple times(The Woman Who Fell to Earth, The Battle of Ranskoor Av Kolos)
Dan was a great short-term companion. He had what... 4 stories total? His personality was good and he fit in well with Yaz and the Doctor. He was sarcastic, and missed his crush. He had guts, running around with a wok in Liverpool during an alien invasion.
Yaz. I have feelings about Yaz. If only they had decided to make her crush on the Doctor apparently BEFORE series 13, it would have allowed them more than 3 episodes to deal with it. With what little reference there was to it in The Flux, there was maybe 4 lines and some screentime in the new years dalek episode for that season, and a 2-3 scene reference in the sea devils return episode. That, combined with her saving the Doctor's ass in Power of the Doctor, it feels like this was shoehorned in after audience response, which is almost never a good idea. Otherwise Yaz is a generally ok character with little to argue about, and not enough to her for me to dislike. I do feel like they used Power of the Doctor as the stock standard "companion who has a crush on the Doctor saves their ass" that all these types of companions get at some point. It just feels like it was decided late and they realized that they didn't have one.
Anyway, writing some of these opinions made me feel like it was 2014 again and I didn't like rose because I liked the 10th Doctor. Ofc some of these opinions are from a place of "oh no! They hurt the scrungly!" I did not read this before posting, I just WENT.
P.S. Also I have feelings about the Master, I'll post those later.
P.P.S Also I have watched some of classic who but there's a lot of it so I just skip around to whatever bits sound the most interesting at the time.
#doctor who#hella rant#very long post#clara oswald slander#Chibnall critical#Moffat Critial#NGL I have things to say about RTD but none of them are nearly as bad as what I have to say about the other two.#I am here to bring a negative energy and have HORRIBLE takes on some of these characters#mypost

Thinking about what romantic shipping is potentially going to look like on this blog, especially as I cycle through these different characters and discovering their voices.
Musings under the cut, for length, but anyone is welcome to read...
Something I'm finding to be a thread/theme between characters is the idea of "home beyond a physical place." Home as an ideal or wish. Home as a person. What home looks like when you effectively have no one single place to call your own and lay down your head. So many of these characters are outsiders, transient, displaced both in the worlds they inhabit and within their own skin... They don't expect to be in any one given place for too long, because it forces them to confront too much, and that's naturally going to affect the kinds of relationships they're able to develop.
Some characters (Ruby, Belinda, Bill) are easy. I mean. HARD, because all three have traveled with The Doctor and how do you explain that kind of life to someone who's never known it? But they have SIGNIFICANTLY fewer romantic hangups than the other muses here. The Rani... Good luck, is all I will say. Same with Simm!Master. If you can impress them enough for them to consider a GENUINE romantic partnership (not just a fling, or them toying with you) then you get every gold star in the sky.
Caesar has only ever been in love once, and the loss of it completely destroyed him. He's flirtatious, and always down for a tryst, but I'm not sure he'd LET himself fall in love again, or with anyone else. But if he did... what would that process of grieving look like? He's held onto that ideal for nearly 30 years, he's shaped his entire life and his magic around the fixation of his first love and bringing him back from the dead... What would it mean to let that go and "start over" in his 50s, when he feels like the only person who was capable of loving him is really and truly gone?
Luca is always on the move. Since exiling himself from his Pack, he's been alone. Wolves mate for life. Choosing a human mate could be an absolute disaster if they changed their mind, because he simply would not be able to let go (and imagine having to explain THAT to your next partner, "Yeah, my ex is a werewolf who's gotten territorial."). And he's had some nasty previous encounters with witches, and doesn't really feel worthy to spend much if any time around other wolves. He avoids other magical beings as much as he can. Like Caesar, he's a flirt, and always down for a whirlwind romance, but then it's back to the lonely road. What would it look like opening up to someone about what he really is, WHY he's alone, and trusting someone not to abandon or reject him if he does finally take a mate?
Trench and Abena occupy a similar spot in my mind. Trench canonically lost his (toddler?) daughter because he "brought work home with him" from the FBC (a paranatural "infection" that regular doctors couldn't treat, and his wife refused to let him bring her to the FBC scientists to get help), and as a result went through a nasty divorce. Abena is a goddess, who put her trust in The Barber, only to discover he was planning on erasing her father from existence. I'm not sure they're looking for romance, or how they would open themselves up to that kind of love. They feel a bit like cold, remote stars... not "frigid" per say, just... distant. It would take something extraordinary to reach them...
Dylan/P6 was kept in a literal cage from the time he was 16 til he was 27. Then he went into a coma. He's been so completely twisted by his time in the FBC, he wouldn't know kindness or flirting if it walked up and tried to shake his hand. Ironically, of all my muses, he is the one who needs the most love, and is the most likely to try to murder anyone who gives it to him because he Cannot Process Any Big/Overwhelming Emotions. At all.
The Barber... Personally, I head canon that he was in love with Abena, but also knew that was NEVER gonna happen (unless, perhaps, he became a god himself) -- and knows whatever friendship he did have with her will forever be marred by what he planned to do to the Pantheon. He might be the easiest of these boys to get to open up, but he's also one big raw, open wound at the moment. He's learning what healing looks like. What his future looks like. And he's never had a place in the world for himself. He's been used and discarded, feared and reviled, and now... he's working out who he even IS. Somebody would have to be extremely patient with him, because if he were to describe himself, he would call himself a blank canvass... and it's sometimes hard to love someone in that state. This matters SIGNIFICANTLY less in his Dark Godhood Verse -- but Nexus is the king of the gods... dealing with an inferiority complex. What does loving a volatile, angry, hurting deity look like?
And last but certainly not least... The Master Doctor. I am a Thoschei shipper til the day I die. Regenerating into The Doctor and permanently fusing himself with his greatest rival and best friend SHOULD have given The Master everything he wanted. Right? Except... The Doctor doesn't WANT to be a part of him, doesn't want anything to do with him, is actively fighting to be free of him and driving The Master all the more insane. How can he have WON and gotten the girl, and have everything he ever wanted, to BE The Doctor... and still be so completely fundamentally lonely? He's permanently fused to the one person he so desperately wants to never leave him... and he still feels left behind and alone. And what sort of person would choose him in the state he's in now?
Some of these characters might end up as Single Ship muses. Some of them I might not ship at all with, and explore what those emotions and sensations bring up for them. But I think the one thing that will really be KEY in shipping with any of them is that the other muse feels like Home. That they're not just a partner, they're someone who touches those core wounds in a way that feels like healing. That home is in their arms, in a way the rest of the world... has really failed to be. I don't know what exactly that's going to look like for each of these characters... but I'm really excited to find out.

The Real Ghostbusters Review
Series - The Real Ghostbusters
Release Date - September 13, 1986 - October 5, 1991
Creator(s) - Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis (Based on the 1984 Ghostbusters Movie), Joe Medjuck, Michael C. Gross (Developer)
TV Network(s)/Streaming Service(s) - ABC, USA Network, FOX Family Channel, MeTV Toons, Netflix, YouTube
Despite its troubled development history, this show does have a lot of redeeming features. Lower your expectations and this series is good. Living up to the impression created by the Ghostbuster movie may have been a tall order for a cartoon and could not really be plausible on technical grounds even if some would like to entertain a flawed perspective that this series was better than the movie simply due to quantity of content thrown at you. The series was however, explicitly treated as a continuation of the movie rather than a spin-off. The second movie however, pretty much ignored every single event or progression that happened in this series.
But you cannot help but compare this series to the movie which started it all. RGB almost completely lacks the primary strengths of the movie ie Bill Murray, Dan Ackroyd, Harold Ramis and Ernie Hudson. Admittedly, trying to make animated equivalents of the mentioned would have been an impossible task. What you get are a downgraded and very different bunch of characters for the show, more tuned towards catering to younger audiences instead of adult audiences that the movie was intended for. Their personalities considerably changed towards the more negative towards the end of the show.
Somehow or the other, they've managed to close most of the gaps between the animated Egon and Harold Ramis as well as the animated Janine and Annie Potts, and they are one of the primary reasons to watch this show. However, the other three characters are nothing like what you saw in the movies and have been severely dumbed down for the kiddies. Sadly, the character of Stantz suffers most from this change. Winston is no longer God fearing and curious, Stantz is one dimensional, performing the occasional technical tasks and Venkman is a wise crack spewing flirt with not a fraction of Bill Murray's charm or lechery. Getting to the positive, they have included Slimer in the mainstream, who is a great addition as a character. The annoying Lois Tully is gone for the most part.
Even so, these are a fairly good bunch of characters when you compare them with characters from other cartoons of the time. Heck, this animated series was actually better than most shows of the 80s, including the ones which were and are far more popular than it, including Thundercats, Transformers, TMNT, GI Joe, MASK and a bunch of others. Who can complain when you get to see your favourite team, or something resembling your favourite team, go up against all sorts of generic ghosts and Lovecraftian creatures from a vast beastiary? Don't expect scares though as the ghosts are really on the wackier side, which is actually a plus.
The story lines of each episode are fairly simple and straightforward and the most interesting ones were the ones which had hilarious circumstances rather than those that tried to squeeze in a serious plot. They are imaginative enough but not really gripping. J Michael Stracenzki of Babylon 5 fame has even written 21 episodes for this series, but his episodes are by far the worst and most boring episodes in the series, even though those particular episodes would be the most well known, for reasons both good and bad. It is very sad that after the first two seasons, this show became further dumbed down and both writing and production values plummeted. This resulted in two questionable spinoffs, namely the "Junior Ghostbusters" and a show focused on Slimer, neither of which were well received leading to the ultimate flop of this show. Even so, this series had some great and memorable episodes and out of 140 episodes, 20 to 30 were really good.
The animation is passable, ranging from decent to mediocre to sometimes poor, depending on the setting, scenes and complexity of character and object motion. As the seasons progressed, its Japanese flavour began to intensify and it ultimately yielded a anime look. Overall, by 80s standards, it was good and perhaps barely passable by today's animation standards. Dialog was however, always well written, even though the voice acting and syncing was not so good.
Sound and Music was very well done. The Music is also one of this show's strengths, it even included some cheesy but charming battle sequences set to pop music tracks by a dedicated music group called Tahiti. Not many of their tracks had a paranormal flavour though, and some of them were completely unrelated to what was actually going on during screenplay.
Overall, the Real Ghostbusters series is an extremely entertaining one, despite many flaws and shortcomings. While the Real Ghostbusters series may be the weakest albeit longest running part of the Ghostbusters franchise which includes two Live Action movies and another brilliant cartoon called Extreme Ghostbusters, approaching the Real Ghostbusters series with a open mind should give it the credit it deserves. It may not be on par with the movies and as a cartoon, it is far inferior and not even comparable to the Extreme Ghostbusters (Extreme Ghostbusters, which incidentally had a lot of the original Extreme Ghostbusters team working on it as well) series but its still very good, all things considered. If you've seen Extreme Ghostbusters and not Real Ghostbusters, please lower your expectations even further and keep a really open mind before viewing Real Ghostbusters for the first time

Weekend Top Ten #612
Top Ten Doctor Who Companions (2005-2023)
Happy 60th Birthday, Doctor Who! Yep, technically it was Thursday 23rd but Who’s counting, eh? The Doctor is now Bus Pass Age, not a bad achievement for someone who’s either 900, 1200, or over two billion years old, depending on how you’re working it out. Timey-wimey and all that.
To celebrate the anniversary of what is probably my favourite British TV show (just pipped at the post, I’d say, by The West Wing, classic Simpsons, and maybe – depending on my mood – Star Trek: The Next Generation) I’ve decided to look at that essential component of Doctor Who-ness, the Companion. The companions are great, because the Doctor is almost unknowable; an ancient cosmic being who has all sorts of weird powers and capabilities, who’s seen and done so much. It’s not just the two hearts and the time travel; they’re frankly weird, at times sage and wise, other times naïve and childlike. So the companion is our point-of-view, our entry-level look at the universe; they’re also a great leveller, bringing out the Doctor’s best qualities and humanising them. And, frankly, they serve that Watson function of allowing a brilliant character who knows everything to exposition all over somebody; they’re there to get talked at.
But, of course, the Companions are so much more, helping to bring Doctor Who to life in untold ways; they can be the heart and soul of the show, the even if a new companion comes in with a familiar Doctor, the dynamic can change enormously. Peter Capaldi’s Twelfth Doctor is very different with Bill Potts than he is with Clara Oswald, for instance; and Ten’s relationship with Rose was unique despite David Tennant sharing the TARDIS with several other people.
Now, whilst I did watch Who when I was a kid, I didn’t really get into it properly till the 2005 reboot; so, to keep things simple, I’m just going to focus on companions who’ve been in the show since then. Sorry, Ace! I love ya! But I don’t feel I can parse my Sarah Janes from my Bonnie Langfords with particular grace. Also, I needed to define exactly what a companion was; I settled on someone who travelled with the Doctor across multiple episodes, with the intention of remaining in the TARDIS. So this meant I had to, very sadly, discount River Song; she’s a guest star, and obviously a huge part of the Doctor’s life and Moffat’s grand over-arching storyline, but I don’t think she was ever a for-real in-TARDIS capital-C Companion. Captain Jack, on the other hand, did remain on Team TARDIS for a few episodes before buggering off to Cardiff. So he counts.
Anyway, enough waffle; let’s light up our sonics and celebrate.
Amy Pond (Karen Gillan, 2010-2012/13): feisty, funny, and flirty, Amy wasn’t a wide-eyed naif nor a grumpy sourpuss, but a someone who was just really enjoyable to watch. Her chemistry with her Doctor is some of the best in the series, but it was the stories that put Amy through the wringer – from a universe-defying romance to an impossible baby – that made her so compelling, and the deft way Gillan responded to the outlandish, hilarious, and ultimately tragic events. There was something about her performance right from the off; we were watching a movie star born before our eyes.
Donna Noble (Catherine Tate, 2006/08-2010/23): prior New-Who companions had mostly been besotted with the Doctor; Donna was pissed off by him. A human who saw the very alien nature of the Time Lord, she was often his conscience – such as in the episode The Fires of Pompeii – but chiefly Donna will be remembered for the humour she brought to the role. Tate was a tremendous comic double act with Tennant, and it’s going to be very exciting to see them together again.
Rose Tyler (Billie Piper, 2005-2006/08/10/13): a companion so important that the very first episode of the rebooted show was named after her. She was the show, arguably the main character in that first season; a woman from humble origins who was destined to change the galaxy. Her growing feelings for the Doctor – especially when he regenerated into David Tennant – were subtly drawn, but in so many ways Piper defined what a modern companion should and could be. So iconic they brought her back for the Fiftieth as a different character cosplaying Rose Tyler.
Bill Potts (Pearl Mackie, 2017): a bit of a milestone in Who history as the first queer female companion and only, I believe, the second woman of colour. Her dynamic with the Doctor was different to what came before; there didn’t seem to be the deep spiritual connection, but she was a funnier, more free-wheeling sort, who loved the adventurous life among the stars. She got to have her own mini-tragic-romance play out over the series, and was the centrepiece of storylines dealing with race and gender politics. A great companion, sadly underused.
Clara Oswald (Jenna Coleman, 2012-2015/17): a companion who suffered a little bit with some flakier plots and character arcs, which is a shame as Coleman is a great actor who had terrific chemistry with two different Doctors, and very different relationships with them, too. A kindly soul with a fun spirit who masked a steely core, she was excellent in the anniversary special The Day of the Doctor.
Rory Williams (Arthur Darvill, 2010-2012): wow, the first bloke on the list. Mr. Pond is just, well, really nice; a massively nice guy. His total love for Amy is such a beautiful thing, spanning eons (he waits for her for two thousand years!). It’s uncomplicated but strong and fiery, and yet he’s totally trusting. He knows he’s the second fiddle in the relationship, forever overshadowed by his brilliant wife, yet he remains unthreatened and trusting and supportive. Plus, rather nicely, they fancy the pants off each other, so their fate – Amy choosing to be trapped forever in the past with him – is utterly believable. A great guy!
Jack Harkness (John Barrowman, 2005-2011/20-21): I’m a bit squiffy putting him on the list because Barrowman is, well, a touch problematic. However, Captain Jack was a great character, injecting a huge does of sex to the usually straightlaced Who. A phenomenal space-flirt who’d “how you doin’” every biped he came across (steady), he was fun in a wartime greatcoat. Torchwood gave him added depth and complexity. I imagine it’s unlikely we’ll see him again for some time, although I suppose he’s no Mickey Smith.
Yasmin Khan (Mandip Gill, 2018-2022): New-Who had done variations on the “companion loves the Doctor” story, but this was the first one to give it a queer lens, without any sensationalising. In a crowded set of companions, Yaz was always the stand out: young, funny, with a great family to draw on, but the smarts and steel of a police background. Sadly – like many characters in that era – she didn’t really get the strength of story to justify her character, and as groundbreaking and well-handled as the developing romance was, it likewise fizzled out to nothing.
Graham O’Brien (Bradley Walsh, 2018-2021/22): most companions are young a sprightly; Graham was a resolute old duffer who provided a nice amount of grandfatherly charm and twinkle to such a propulsive show. You got the sense that Walsh was loving every minute of it; and whether he was just easier to write for, or Walsh was just a more experienced performer, he did the best out of some weaker scripts, always shining and giving the show a lot of comedic pep.
Martha Jones (Freema Agyeman, 2007-2008/10): coming after Rose was a huge ask, but Martha delivered a nice twist by falling in unrequited love with the Doctor, a thread of tragedy running through her whole arc and giving it steel. She was also just really capable and heroic throughout, even as her Doctor became an angrier, more bitter character, weighed down by his losses. She got to fight the Master! When the Doctor got turned into Dobby the House Elf! She’s badass!
Edit: now with fixed formatting! I went back in time and did it. Yay.
