Oh, he truly was her rock.

Somnus had the amazing and enviable ability to simple close his eyes and drift off to sleep, and it was deep in that realm of fog and dreams where he remained.

Though, for Aerith, the night was long. She felt content holding onto him — it wasn't so different from her holding onto one of her pillows in the night, only... better. Much, much better. He was a solid presence in the bed. A reminder that she was not alone, and warm.

Her heavy lashes would fall closed, and she would hear the carriage door shatter. A cruel hand wrapped around her arm. Or tangled painfully in her hair. There were shouts of battle closing in around their bed.

But every time her lashes leapt back open, she was reminded of him. His steady breaths. He was tangible. She trusted in him to keep her safe. So, she tried again, and again, she chased after sleep by closing her lashes even if something scary might await.

And it worked.

There were no late-night walks up and down the stairs to tire herself. She didn't sit all hunched over by dimmed fire light, picking at threads or paints. She managed to find sleep, and she eased into that sweet fog with melted relief.

Come morning her arm must have weighed heavily around Somnus. Surely it had to, because somehow she didn't stir as he eased away. She was a relentlessly light sleeper... and yet, she had soothed into a similar state as him. Heavy as a rock.

The combined movement of her hand, warm press of his lips to her palm and his honeyed-soft voice all coaxed a scrunch in her expression. She inhaled, her fingers flexed a little, and her thick lashes blinked open just-so.

It was clear she was still in the fog of sleep as her emerald eyes searched for what had roused her awake. The moment she looked upon his face, her lips lazily spread into a small, sleepy smile and she hummed.

Then came the stretch. The kind where her whole body tried to stretch as long as Somnus was tall, it seemed, with how she tensed and briefly occupied more space with her arms and legs reaching for opposite ends of the bed.

Post-stretch, she fell limp again, but not before she curled in closer to Somnus and greedily cuddled back in with his warmth again. Her face pressed to the pristine white fabric of his toga for a few moments longer before she finally, finally committed to being awake.

"... I'd rather plunge my head in an ice-cold Lifespring and swirl it around than have to drink another potion." she softly uttered, as though Somnus could possibly be clued into her preluding thoughts about still feeling like her magic was sapped in a way. Sure, she could still perform a few tricks for the soldiers, but she didn't understand the point of draining herself further before battles to come.

Aerith lifted her head from where she had pillowed on him, and regarded him for a moment before another smile pulled at her. "Good morning, my Prince."

The sudden shift of weight should already have made him turn around – but Somnus would have never guessed what Aerith then did to him. Just coaxing him into laying down on his side as she held onto him so sweetly and… made him be the smaller one in this.

This was… not how it was supposed to be… right?

Then why in the Gods’ good names did it feel so good…?

A mere minute ago, his mind had thought about quite different things. Oh, he would have longed to feel her body so close as he did now. But… now that he did, the feeling was different. He did not want to unveil her – instead his hand just loosely grasped around her forearm. Wondering what was going on…?

And her words – those were simply too sweet. Kindness without any end. They made Somnus smile, a small noise of happiness escaping his throat.

“I trust you in this…”

The sounds of a morning in the Farmland’s capital were different than those Somnus was used to. Instead of the high-pitched screeches of swallows chasing each other around terracotta tiles, there was the sing-song of blackbirds.

It was the first thing registering, before he felt the thin arm still wrapped around him – and in the very first moment, he reacted with a small startle. Until he realized where he actually was. And who was with him…

Had he really just… absolutely fallen asleep as soon as Aerith had treated him this sweetly? She… that was magic. Or a curse. Had she bewitched him?

Looking over to her, Somnus slowly got up and tried to lay her arm back down gently, so he wouldn’t force her to wake up just yet, too.

It was… cold. For a moment he wondered how he should get through the autumn and winters with his sandals. But… he would make do. Maybe this was just the early morning coldness. Turning around again, he watched Aerith for a moment. And in a moment of weakness, he simply took her hand and kissed her palm.

“Wake up, Princess?”

            " there we go, that's the caelum i know . . " she quips in response to him being a ' catch ' comment, poking him on the chest a couple of times. " that's true, i guess there was a lapse of judgement made from her end there, she messed with the wrong guy. " sora could only laugh at the other girl's dumb decision and how she let someone like caelum slip away from her grasp. unable to stop herself from sneering at his remark then, " i mean, you could. who am i to stop you ? " that statement was definitely directed more towards herself, slapping herself with the cold, hard, truth as it always had been - she was his best friend, and therefore had no say whatsoever on his actions and can only offer support. " oh ? playing that jealousy game, eh ? i'm down, we can do that ! " with sora agreeing to it so quick that it almost surprised herself, she raises both brows, " i mean, unless . . i am not a part of this plan ? in any case, i support you and i do think it is worth the try. "

"it's because i did say the shower was communal." not that he thought sora needed to hear it again but it's best to shatter any pre-conceived notions sooner than later. he did give her a few options though, in the event she found any of them better. "oh i know i'm a catch, have you seen me?" he reassures her, shaking his head as laughter fills the space around them. "that doesn't mean that people are willing to go above and beyond to be with me though. all a matter of personal preference and you know i'm not going to stay down when i can move on." at least, that's what he's been telling himself between when his ex broke up with him and now. his laundry list of girls he's made out with helped as well. "oh really? so probably wouldn't be too much of a reach if i flirted with every single one of them back?" her little slip goes right over his head, caelum far too focused on his new 'plan of attack'. they'd been friends with so long that he doesn't even dare consider it, even if they had their little moment back by the bunk beds. "i was thinking of just getting her jealous so she'd flip out and ruin her new little relationship. but i can't tell if that's enough."
