Planche 1, Cabinet des Modes, May 15th 1786, Bibliothèque Nationale Française.
This plate has a LONG description, and here's a (shortened) rough translation of the description:
We can say it is no longer desirable for women to dress with great adornment (...) and these fashions are no longer made but for ceremonial gatherings, weddings, formal balls, large meals, which take place in very small numbers. This justifies us to not have often representations of these garments (...), nevertheless since they re sometimes worn, we show them in plates 1 and 2. In plate 1 we can clearly see that we no longer wear the big paniers and even in the most adornment, the fashions have been simplified (except, of course, the court clothes, which do not vary much and can be traces to the clothes of our fathers) (...). The woman in Plate 1 wears a blue robe à la Turque. The petticoat is of the same fabric and colour, the sleeves are made of white gros-de-Naples or another white fabric. The trim of the dress is in white crepe in the shape of rosettes, and in the middle of each is bouquet of artificial roses. The skirt of also decorated with white crepe and rosettes similar to the dress. The cuffs attached to the sleeves are made of cut white gauze. The throat is covered with a gauze fichu, tied at the front with a rainbow ribbon bow, she wears white leather gloves, and a fan. The head is covered with a bonnet also tied with a rainbow ribbon and topped with a garland of artificial roses. The ribbon forms a large bow at the back and holds a white crepe veil that falls almost to the waist, and on top of the bonnet rises a set of feathers: two rose, two blue, one white, and one green. The hairstyle has light curls along the entire front of the head, her hair is pulled up at the back in a flat bun, and two large curls on each side fall down her length. Her shoes are blue to match the colour of the dress, and are adorned with rainbow ribbon.
I found many funny things in this description, like that the magazine writers thought in 1786 that this look was simple, the concept of rainbow ribbon (ruban à l'Arc-en-Ciel) that seems to simply be a ribbon in colourful stripes, and the size and complexity of that bonnet. How about you? Please let me know in the comments or reblog tags, what is your favorite part of this outfit, or even if you'd like to reproduce it.
Also, the plate 2, that is a men's outfit, will be posted soon :)

Moments from "Once Upon a Studio" that I adored
Mickey kindly offered Oswald to take first place in the group photo, telling him "After you!". Oswald happily thanked him by tipping his head to him.
That entire ending was perfect. I love how the "When You Wish Upon a Star" number began with Alan-a-Dale strumming his lute on top of the building, and then Scat Cat, Mirabel, and Junior join in before the singing begins. The build-up to Jiminy Cricket was great.
Belle and Beast singing together! In the original film, they had separate verses in "Something There" so it was nice that they shared a small duet. Paige O'Hara and Robby Benson did a great job!
Quasimodo singing! I'm glad to hear Tom Hulce in the role of Quasi again. James Baxter did a terrific job animating him once again.
Scuttle interrupts Ariel's verse only for Baloo to shut him up and share a sweet bonding moment with Mowgli.
There's something incredibly poetic about Snow White holding hands with Mulan and Asha as they sing together. Disney Studios owes a lot of its success to its princess characters, and it was cool to see three generations of female protagonists (the original, the Renaissance era in the 1990s, and the most recent era).
Winnie the Pooh's presence in general. I love how Christopher Robin and the others have to help him out of the picture frame, recreating the rabbit hole scene. Also, Pooh singing "Fate steps in, and sees you through" at the end and Tigger pouncing on him really got to me.
Cinderella and Prince Charming going down the stairs and Charming loses his shoe. The role reversal was cute enough, but after snatches the shoe, they go into silly mode with Prince Charming shouting "Eric, get your dog!" and Cinderella enabling the situation by saying "Go, Max, go!" It's incredibly endearing to see Prince Charming have a sense of humor and Cinderella happily going along with the shenanigans.
Antonio with the other animal characters and telling Joanna not to eat Jacques and Gus. Pluto coming in to save the mice was nice too.
Incorporating the archival audio from Robin Williams's recording as Genie.
The fifteen puppies watching the "Night on Bald Mountain" segment from Fantasia and Chernabog pops out of the screen. I also noted the various "Art of" books of their feature films on the cabinet surrounding the television.
Hearing Nathan Lane as Timon again and calling Olaf "Frosty".
Robin Hood and Little John snatching Scrooge McDuck's money bags and reveling in their victory. Oo-de-lolly!
The Wreck-It Ralph cameos! Vanellope on her race car, Ralph calling Mickey "Garfield" and Fix-It Felix fixing Goofy's camera. All in character and perfect.
Mickey's gang having their time in the spotlight. Donald trying to go down a crowded elevator, Goofy working as the photographer (may or may not be a subtle nod to his occupation in A Goofy Movie), and even Clarabelle has a moment.
It was nice seeing some representation for their shorts (Ben and Me, Johnny Appleseed) and their overlooked films (The Black Cauldron, Home on the Range, Chicken Little, and Dinosaur). Even if they didn't have any dialogue, their presence alone certainly counts.
Highlighting the artists that contributed to the studio. Burny Mattinson's cameo at the beginning was nice, and though Walt Disney himself was very much a complicated person (staunchly anti-union being one of them), the moment of Mickey staring at his portrait was genuine enough (Mickey says a simple "thanks" before he joins the rest of the characters). The framed photographs of various artists throughout the halls was also nice (I'm sure the actual building has those framed pictures of their former employees). I would have been a lot more critical of the short if many of the presence of the other artists weren't felt in the studio.
Overall, it was a great short! It was a beautiful love letter to the animation studio and its characters. I'm glad that they didn't incorporate any Pixar stuff and even flaunt their acquired assets (Star Wars, Marvel, etc.). It was just about celebrating their original animated works and the large catalog of characters. The animation was also fantastic and it was cool seeing the 2-D characters interact with the CG characters in a way that felt natural. I greatly appreciate the effort and love that was put into the short.

Bernhard Roetzel
Tumblr media Tumblr media

Images of Geneviève Lantelme -
According to Wikipedia "Geneviève Lantelme (born Mathilde Hortense Claire Fossey, 20 May 1883[1] – 24/25 July 1911) was a French stage actress, socialite, fashion icon, and courtesan. Considered by her contemporaries to be one of the most beautiful women of the Belle Epoque and bearing a resemblance to American actress Ethel Barrymore, she is remembered for the mysterious circumstances of her death: on the night of 24/25 July 1911, she fell from the yacht of her husband, Alfred Edwards."

2023 Game of the Year Countdown Honorable Mentions (part 1)
Tumblr media
Money Puzzle Exchanger Arcade and NeoGeo, 1997
After adoring Panel de Pon last year, I have kept an eye on various older puzzle games just in case I end up liking them. This one transports me back in time to the old school arcades in every aspect. It’s available on the Switch eShop and they have updated literally nothing. Sounds super 90s, looks super 90s, and has awkward translations like so many of those rare arcade cabinets in the 90s. Charm is off the charts, but wow is it difficult. It doesn’t have the same learning curve that Panel de Pon does, and I have not been encouraged to sink as much time into it as a result. It’s clear that it’s meant to be played against a friend, and while I did convince two friends to try it, they both agreed that it was going to take too much time to learn the game and we haven’t done any VS mode. I doubt I'll ever be a huge puzzle game fan, but it's cool to find one occasionally.
Tumblr media
Wild Arms 3 Sony PlayStation 2, 2002 This was the game I played this year with the most mixed feelings. I ended up not really liking the combat, the extremely high rate of random encounters, or the story that went way too hard in the sci-fi direction for the type of atmosphere the game originally sets.
Tumblr media
However, the music was enjoyable (Secret Garden!), the ending was actually perfect for the genre (I’ll get to that), and the setting was something I never knew I needed before: a wild west JRPG. I dabbled with Wild Arms XF for the PSP a few years ago, but I’m not a big fan of non-Fire Emblem tactics games, so I dropped it. But both games have made me really want more wild west JRPGs. The setting already allows for all the tropes and story devices that JRPGs require, but is essentially untapped. Fantasy has been overdone in the genre. And sci-fi is less and less unique as many devs are turning to that genre, too. But the wild west already has the mysterious drifters, the native tribes, the outlaws, the lone lawmen, the legends, the unexplored territory, the rivalries, and the hidden treasure. And that all just comes with the territory of a wild west setting so none of it feels convoluted or overdone. I’m not quite sure why we haven’t had more set in this type of world, especially given how popular the American West is, or at least has been, in Japan.
I also really like Virginia Maxwell as the main character. I’m a sucker for female protags, and apparently this game suffered for it back in 2002 because teenage boys were too insecure for that type of thing, I guess? But Virginia also just looks like a super cool western chick who dual wields revolvers.
Tumblr media
However, as I said earlier, there were a lot of aspects I just grew sick of and I actually dropped the game somewhere shortly after the midpoint, turning to YouTube to see the rest of the plot. And if I had wanted an absurd sci-fi story, I would have played a Xeno game. It seems very weird to create such a great wild west setting, and then just pivot to so much sci-fi. Even more so when you give the game a VERY wild west ending to boot. I actually adored the ending/epilogue to the game because it’s as perfect for a wild west story as the Mexican stand-off was in the opening sequence.
So yeah, very mixed feelings on this game. I’d love to hear what other people thought of it, if they’ve played it.

Planche 2, Cabinet des Modes, May 15th 1786, Bibliothèque Nationale Française.
We already looked at the female look for this Cabinet des Modes edition, here we have the male, which I LOVE, because late 18th century menswear is just *chef kiss*. The description is a little shorter than the one for the woman, but here we are in my loose and shortened rough translation:
Plate 2 The coat and waistcoat of the man shown in this plate, are made of spring velvet in a lemon green background with green stripes and lilac spots. The buttons that decorate the coat and waistcoat are enameled and speckled in a contrasting colour. The breeches are made of black liver cloth and the fit is snug/tight. The stockings are white and the shoes have red heels (this fashion is not for everyone) (...). The man wears a white plumed hat on his arms, and lace ruffle on his wrists. He has his left hand in his waistcoat pocket, and his right in his coat pocket.

More of the paintings of the Palisandre Drawing-Room of Her Majesty at the Alexander Palace in Tsarskoe Selo In the Palisandre Drawing-Room of the Empress, there was a multitude of paintings, watercolours, pastels and prints. Most of the paintings were hung along two particular walls - the wall leading to the Lilac Cabinet and the wall leading to the Maple Living-Room. The two most well-known of these paintings still reside with GMZ Tsarskoe Selo and have recently been reframed with recreated wooden frames to match the originals which were lost during the Second World War. Gosfond (The State Museum Catalogue of the Museum Fund in Russia) has a wealth of a collection that spans the entire country with a range of objects ranging from drawings, photographs, sculpture, paintings, portraits, miniatures, vases, etc. GMZ Pavlovsk is the major keeper of what was evacuated from the Alexander Palace during the war. In its collection is 1,078 items which vary from paintings, fabric hangings from the rooms, sculpture, art glass, etc. Of these, I was able to find six paintings which up until 1941 hung on the walls of the Palisandre Drawing-Room of Her Majesty. From the 1928 Catalog on the Alexander Palace-Museum (Furnishings) by I. Yakovlev and translated generously by Stephen R. de Angelis (available via www.bookemon.com), are the titles that correspond to these ten paintings: "The Annunciation." Inscription: "Ave Maria Grazia Plena." Granitsch, S. Circa. 1895. "Madonna and Child." Thumann, P. German School. Date Unknown. "Portrait (waist-high) of the Princess Helena Victoria - cousin of Alexandra Feodorovna. Copy from Swoboda, J." Kobervein, Terell G. Circa. 1897. "Portrait of Alexei Nikolaevich in his youth." Trifonov, I. Member of the Saint Petersburg Painting School and the Academy of the Arts from 1866. Circa. 1906. "Child's Head." Makovskii, K.E. (1839-1915). Russian School. Date Unknown. "Old Boyarin." Pelevin, I. Russian School. Date Unknown. "Atrium at the last sunbeams." Bakalowicz, St. VI. (1857-1928). Russian School. Circa. 1896. "Spanish Scene." Gallegos, J. Italian School. Circa. 1899. "Monastery Hospital." Topham, Frank. W.W. Date Unknown. "The Interior view of the Cathedral in Seville." Gallegos, J. Italian School. Circa. 1898. ________________________________________________________________ Please enjoy these images, and If you’d like to share them elsewhere, you can download them yourself and if you do so, PLEASE remember to credit the institution/news source/author/photographer - in this case Gosfond, GMZ Tsarskoe Selo, GMZ Pavlovsk, V.I.
