my friend siraj abudayeh (vetted on line 219), who i've posted about frequently, has been fundraising for his family's daily survival since june of this year. read more about him here, here, and here. follow him here: @siraj2024. he is a journalist who writes frequent updates about the situation in gaza, and it is always better to get the story from the source than filtered through a western lens.

as of about a week ago, he had raised over $90,000 CAD / $64,000 USD. he had withdrawn a portion of it to pay for various daily needs, medical care, and rent.

his fundraiser had been under investigation for a few weeks and the organizer, his cousin, even sent all of their government IDs to verify that they are real people.

despite this, gofundme deleted his fundraiser a week ago. he lost over $38,000 CAD ($27,000 USD). that is a monumental loss that would devastate anyone. but in gaza, it is the loss of a lifeline.

gofundme has a pattern of baselessly investigating and terminating fundraisers benefiting palestinians, often waiting until the campaign has reached the end of its goal to terminate it and refund all donors, leaving the refugees in the dust.

in the hopes of continuing to keep his family alive while unchecked capitalism and gang violence in gaza are on the rise, and in the midst of constant bombardment, displacement, and death, siraj has opened another gofundme. this fundraiser is in his sister's name, and is being organized by a trusted friend of his who lives abroad. we hope it will not be met with the same fate as the old one.

A Real-Life Horse Plinko

Hi all,

You read the title right.

It’s not finished yet, but it’s well on its way. Will it work? No promises. This hellish creation was not meant to exist in real life. So we will keep you updated.

We have a stuffed horse for it, but he too is not finished yet. Many prototypes battle in the plinkoing to see who will come out on top and take the crown as DashCon 2's Official Plinko Horse. (Once again, no promises that it will actually function, but we will certainly try our best.)

STAGNANT CAMPAIGN: Help Sajida and her family evacuate

Sajida has been fundraising for her family for over a year. She should have already met her goal by now, but her campaign has repeatedly fallen into long periods of stagnation. Currently, the most recent donation was made 3 weeks ago. We cannot let this pattern continue!

Sajida is responsible for her elderly mother and her younger siblings. She has relied on support from this campaign to afford supplies for them and save for their evacuation, but with the repeated stagnation, there have been periods where the family was unable to afford even the most basic necessities.

With the inflated cost of goods in Sudan, Sajida's younger brothers have literally been working themselves sick trying to help their family scrape by. This was not the life Sajida wanted them to have. She wants nothing more than to preserve their childhood and provide them with a safe future, where they will have access to an education and the ability to pursue their dreams.

Most of what Sajida has been able to raise has been spent on essential items. Her family urgently needs help to continue to afford goods and be able to evacuate. It's been a year and the goal of $50k is long overdue. Please donate and share!

Valentine's Day for embroidery nerds

Something I love about historical embroidery is how much the present and the past are stitched together. Valentine's Day is one of those things that's centuries old, but still a little new and fresh every time it rolls around. It is what we put into it, as well as what it used to be.

I print patterns onto interfacing that sticks to the fabric while you stitch. Then when you're done, you just dunk it in water to wash the pattern off!

So here are my new festive offerings:

Visible mending patches: Hearts I and Hearts II

I couldn't decide on one, so why not both? These are great if you want an easy way to embroider little wee hearts on things! They really shine when they're used for visible mending. You can use them to attach new patches to holes in old clothes, and look good doing it.

Embroidery Border: Lovebirds High

I wanted something big and fun, so I designed this one myself. Its figurative grandparents are Renaissance blackwork and Scandinavian Rosemaling. I liked being able to combine an existing embroidery border into a bigger pattern. 7.5 cm (3") wide and 16" (40cm) long.

Another original design! I've been making a lot of birds lately. To me these feel like office-worker sparrows that have stopped to kvetch together on a window ledge during their seed break. Love... is on the staff meeting agenda. 1 ¼" (3.5 cm) wide and 40 cm (16") long

Historical clothing project basic outfit #1

Linen tunic: tabby weave, handsewn using cotton thread with flat felled seams. I bought the fabric on sale for about $30 CAD.

Leather belt thrifted for ~$3.

Linen shorts thrifted for ~$8 (we're pretending they have no zipper).

Wool socks: woven wool material left from a theatre project (so technically free), hand felted and handsewn using linen-wool blend yarn, also left from another project. Felled seams.

Garters crocheted from the same linen-wool yarn. Crochet is historically inaccurate but I was too tired to learn a whole new technique, might replace later.

I made my own patterns for the tunic and socks, loosely based on Roman and early Medieval styles but adapted to suit my daily needs.

headcanon list of clay family wildmother rituals/sacred things that they wear casually and maybe somethings for special occasions:

little braids in their hair, not too many, and they're behind or in front of ears. perhaps the two braids that cornelius has with all the jewellery on them is because of his age or something could be nice like that

the spiral undercut patterns of course. cad has this, constance also seems to have parts of her head shaved too, so i think she'd also have the spirals.

their earrings of course. but a lot of hand carved wooden items like that, beads and bracelets things

braided bracelets with things tied into them, like their hair

beads made from clay, because they are clays too

and the spiral patterns on their clothes (caduceus' trousers in his first outfit for instance)

dye made from plants in the grove thats used for special occasions to stain symbols onto their palms or fur

the lichen of course

(meaning of the spirals they wear in relation to the wildmother: cyclical nature of life and death. you are born -> you live and eat the plants -> you die -> the plants and fungi and insects eat you, over and over for forever and ever)
