Luna's Review: Café Enchanté

Official Summary:

When Kotone inherits her grandfather’s Tokyo café, she discovers the shop holds more secrets than anyone could imagine.

The café is a meeting spot for beings from multiple, mystical worlds. You’ll meet the king of demons, a humanoid beast, a fallen angel, and more.

And when government agents monitoring non-human activities show up at your door, your new café is about to become a lot more colorful.

(Just as a reminder, I'm writing this for myself to keep track of my thoughts and leave a record of the games I've played. Others are welcome to read and feel free to provide your own thoughts, but please, no hate! They're just my opinions, nothing more.)

I was excited for this game. The premise sounded amazing: a cute cafe full of magical beings from other worlds? Sign me up! I love the colorful cast of characters, and the art is undoubtedly gorgeous.

But, while I enjoyed elements of this game, the setting falls apart almost immediately, and has very little to do with any of the routes, with the exception of the true end. The whole game is actually incredibly dark, complete with bloodshed and death in every route, which is normally not a bad thing, but it feels a bit misleading here.

You're told almost at once that the cafe is somehow sustained on payments from only a handful of romanceable characters, none of which use human currency or seem to have jobs that would involve payment, with the exception of the one human bachelor Rindo. This is nitpicky, I know, but I found it frustrating because it would have been so easy to write a way around this.

Let me be clear that I don't necessarily mind a game with a ridiculous premise. I love Mystic Messenger, and the entire game hinges on the fact that you have moved into a stranger's apartment and have somehow remotely taken on party planning for a charity group of people you haven't met. But the thing about Mystic Messenger is that the ridiculousness is upfront, right at the beginning, and once you get past it and accept the game for what it is, you can enjoy it.

This is not so with Cafe Enchante. There are many times in this game where just a little more thought could have made things make more sense. To me, the whole game was plagued with sloppy writing and baffling plot details that could have easily been avoided or explained in a different way — not to mention the litany of literal editing errors. It's also not translated very well in places — or maybe it is, and just written poorly in its original Japanese. Either way, it reads awkwardly a lot of the time

Overall, I was not impressed with this game. It just goes to show that pretty artwork and a fun initial premise do not necessarily make a good product.

Below are my thoughts on each route in the order I played them.

Ignis Carbunculus Route

This is the route I got first, without trying. I actually did not want to get Ignis first, because I figured he was the tsundere character in this game, and I like to do those a bit later. He's actually not particularly tsundere at all, just hypermasculine and therefore not great at expressing emotions other than rage.

This is one of the darkest and, in my opinion, one of the laziest-written routes in the game. You're expected to believe that Ignis went on a rage, literally killed and ate many of his own people, including his family, forgot about it and then just continues on with his life, only to be conveniently reminded of his dark past at the right moment to advance the game. And the rest of his clan has been tolerating him because they're afraid of him, and for whatever reason, Ignis has never noticed everyone hates or fears him??

Ignis is also the only member of his species who can eat. The rest don't need to because they're born with all the calories they need for the rest of their lives apparently, meaning the beasts of the literal beast world don't kill each other for food, just sport. And oh, yeah, that's somehow also Ignis' fault.

I felt like this route could have been simplified in a way that made more sense. Instead, the writers had a vision and manipulated many small details to make the rest of the game work within that vision, resulting in a lot of strange decisions.

I'm aware this game isn't meant to be realistic, but Ignis' whole plotline seemed very contrived. It's like they had something written already but realized certain elements weren't congruent with other aspects of the game, so they just...manipulated elements of Ignis' route until it kind of fit.

Overall, I think Ignis' route was my least favorite. It felt the most rushed, the least polished, and assumed a lot of things conveniently went unnoticed for years in Ignis' life. There was just too much coincidence in this route for me.

Il Fado de Rie Route

This was the second route I played, and overall my favorite route. It felt the most cohesive out of all the characters, and it was the longest aside from the true end.

That doesn't mean I don't have my gripes with it. My biggest one is that Il, who has apparently based his entire personality, including his name, on an otome game character, makes the baffling decision to tell Kotone about the game and literally recommend she try that character's route first, only to immediately regret it when he realizes she's going to notice something is off.

Like, I could understand it if the personalities were just similar, but he took the name, too. I cannot believe he would be so stupid as to forget the game that he stole his persona and name from and then just freely give away that information. What pisses me off so much is that Kotone could have so easily encountered this information on her own. Have her buy the game independently to surprise Il, and then discover the overlap herself. Why on earth would he just give her that information? It's lazy writing.

I did really enjoy how angels are basically human androids and god is a supercomputer. That was rad as hell and is a brilliant explanation for why angel magic is math based. I'd say this route has the best worldbuilding, including the gorgeous pretty-boy side characters.

I don't feel completely satisfied with how Il's route was resolved, as there's still some question to how much of his personality is his own, but ultimately it was the most solid route in the game. I didn't think I would like Il as I don't particularly enjoy his character archetype, but in the end I was pretty attached to him. His characterization in the true end route was adorable as well, and I adore his friendship with Misyr.

Kaoru Rindo Route

Rindo was my second favorite route in the game. I think it's super funny that Kotone keeps talking about their age gap even though he's the second youngest character in the game at 42 years old.

His route is also (to my knowledge) the only route that lets you just straight up kill the person you're trying to romance, although it does dead end the game if you make the choice not to save him when you can.

The worst part of this route for me what the treatment of Rindo's sister, Shizuku. She doesn't get a proper sprite in her human form, so you have no idea what she looked like, and it makes it kind of hard to feel anything for her. I did like the utter horror of watching Mikado feed her with his blood with no explanation.

This is one of the darkest routes and the only one where a side character with a sprite actually dies. And when he does, you feel bad for him because he was just trying to protect the woman he loves.

It did feel a little predictable to have Rindo become non-human after oodles of conversations about whether or not humans and non-humans can have relationships. Honestly the game writers are cowards for not making Rindo look more extreme as a non-human. Make him a freak!!

I do appreciate that he remains non-human at the end, though. I feel like forcing him to become human again would have eliminated any of the growth he made during the route.

Personality-wise, Rindo is one of the cuter characters IMO. He's flirty but as soon as things get serious he backs off. Super adorable!

Canus Espada Route

This route was...ok. Just ok.

Honestly, I was bored through most of it. I can't really say why. It just didn't appeal to me that much.

Right at the beginning it annoyed me by assigning a gender to Vennia. Like, he could have just been left nonbinary. It's canon in this game that fairies don't have genders anyway, so it would have been fine to continue using they/them pronouns. I guess otome games haven't gone that way yet but it would have been nice.

I did like Vennia's relationship with Titania, and in the end, when he betrays Kotone, it felt natural. You can't hate him because you know he just wants to protect his sister.

I thought maybe his headlessness would be plot relevant but on the contrary, we get literally no explanation for why he's headless and nobody else is. I get that they wanted to make him an interesting character, but we know his ancestor was not headless, so why is he? Aren't there other dullahans in Medio?

I do think it's hilarious that we don't ever get to see his face. The implication is that he does in fact have one, so I had predicted it would be revealed as part of his route, but they stuck to their guns and kept him headless throughout the entire route.

Idk why I wasn't impressed with this route. Worldbuilding-wise it was one of the more solid storylines. It just wasn't particularly shocking or interesting to me, so I didn't love it, but I suppose I didn't hate it either.

Misyr Rex Route

This route was, quite frankly, absolutely ridiculous. This was the most obvious case of having an overall idea and not having the skills to execute it well.

So many things happened just because Misyr willed it to. For example, he gains magic powers and a semi-human form simply because he wanted to visit a four-year-old on earth? How does that even happen? This is already ignoring the fact that he transformed into an ash monster through forced evolution or whatever, which is already a stretch, mind you.

And if that's not ridiculous enough, we then get introduced to Noah, who is somehow an entire world. I actually found him to be more interesting of a character than Misyr, now that we know that Misyr's entire life consists of going to one cafe and doing nothing all day.

The most disappointing part of this route was Asmodeus, who was largely not relevant at all other than the initial shock of realizing Misyr wasn't the demon king. Why bother making such an annoying character for a brief gag? He could have been so much more but instead he's reduced to an unlikable flirt who kidnaps Kotone in order to provide an excuse for a cute CG, and then we barely see him ever again.

This whole route stinks of worldbuilding with no consideration for how certain elements would affect the rest of the world. You know how sometimes worlds in fictional programs (ie: Black Mirror) build their entire concepts around one aspect of society and don't bother fleshing out everything else? That's basically this whole route in a nutshell. It falls apart under the tiniest bit of scrutiny.

To top it off, the good ending of this route, and therefore the whole game, involves Kotone becoming the world herself, largely losing her human form, now cursed to live for eternity as a realm that turns people to ash????? Who decided this would be a satisfying ending for an otome game?

The one element I did like was the explanation for why non-humans look so much like humans. I think it's super cool that humans used to have superior technology and lost it and everything else grew from that. I like the biblical references as well.

Ultimately, though, this was a disappointing way to end the game for me.

The divergence that starts here should be reused at the end of the main story after the game's been completed  [i think???? the first sentence was super confusing].

Look, I KNOW that the latest release of Hakuoki for the Switch is the same goddamn game they’ve been releasing for years now but with slightly more content, like always. I’ve even already read fan translations of the bits I’ve cared about. I just want it in English please I’m dying.

Anyway, I finally got such an otome jones that I started looking at Amazon reviews (bless the hardcore fans who leave them) and after passing on Café Enchanté because when I saw it in the Nintendo eShop it looked like very bland coffee shop/issekai fare, I see this review that’s like “be warned this game looks harmlessly cute but it gets surprisingly dark in places”

So I look up an otome review blog and it turns out there’s A MIDDLE AGED MAN AND his route features MY FAVORITE TROPE (I won’t spoil it but if you know me it’s easy to figure out)?!

Anyway I bought a used hard copy for cheap because the eShop never has sales and I stg localizers don’t even try anymore the English versions are always riddled with typos and if you think I’m paying $50 for that you’re joking. What really makes me sad is just looking at that blog for the review showed me dozens of interesting games that may never get localized.

I didn't expect to like Café Enchanté as much as I liked Collar x Malice and Code:Realize because it looked like it was a lot more lighthearted and less story-based, but I'm currently on main chapter 8 and it seems like there's story to it? It's pretty interesting so far.

The only thing I'm gonna kinda complain about is the fact that I've found more than a few text errors so far. That's also the thing that bothered me most while I was playing Collar x Malice, and I heard that Collar x Malice Unlimited had an abysmal amount of errors before it was patched. There didn't seem to be many while I was playing Code:Realize though, which is why I'm wondering what happened. Are the translators at Aksys... okay???

Résumé : Derek est le petit-ami virtuel de Stiles – même s’il ne sait pas à quoi il ressemble – et ils se rencontrent pour la première fois.

                   Stiles est à peu près sûr qu’il est en train de mourir. Ou, non, modifiez cette déclaration : Stiles est à peu près sûr qu’il est déjà mort. Cent pourcent, complètement, irrévocablement mort, parce qu’il va rencontrer Derek dans – il regarde son téléphone – vingt minutes. Vingt petites minutes. Après un an et demi à parler – dont quarante pourcents de flirt, étonnement – ils se rencontrent finalement.

Et Stiles ? Stiles est mort.

Ses ongles et ses cuticules aussi. Il les a mordus plus au cours des dernières heures que depuis des mois, mais c’est le résultat du stress de rencontrer Derek. Il est impatient aussi, évidemment, parce que qui ne serait pas content de rencontrer son petit-ami en ligne de sept semaines. Le pire – mais aussi le meilleur – c’est que Stiles ne sait pas à quoi ressemble Derek.

Il est à peu près sûr que Derek n’est pas inquiet ou quoi que ce soit, mais, vous ne pouvez jamais être trop sûr avec internet. Ils ont Skypez – Stiles avec sa caméra, mais pas celle de Derek – et tout allait bien, mais Derek a refusé de lui envoyer une photo. Cependant, Stiles pense que ça ira, si Derek ressemble à comment sa voix sonne : doux et gentil, il ressemble à une couverture moelleuse, s’il était une chose physique.

Peu importe, il est sûr que tout ira bien. Au moins, Derek sait à quoi il ressemble, donc il n’y a aucune chance qu’ils se ratent, sauf... sauf si Derek décide de ne pas se montrer. Mais Stiles ne va pas penser à ça, parce qu’il va avoir besoin de tous ses doigts pour faire d’autres choses importantes, comme tenir la main de Derek, par exemple.

Bordel, il n’ose même pas croire qu’il va tenir la main de Derek dans moins de quinze minutes. Si Derek le laisse faire, bien sûr, Stiles est un grand défenseur du consentement parce que cette merde est importante, mais il est presque sûr que Derek le laissera faire.

Enfin, c’est ce qui ressemble à la douceur de Derek, lui murmurant « Je t’aime » à chaque fois qu’ils Skypent.

Ouais, non, Derek va définitivement le laisser tenir sa main. Peut-être bien qu’il va même laisser Stiles lui payer un café, comme un vrai rendez-vous. Il se demande si les mains de Derek sont comme les siennes. Derek lui a donné quelques détails, bien sûr – yeux verts/bleus et cheveux noirs – mais rien d’autres de spécifique, donc Stiles y va à l’aveugle. A ses yeux, Derek lui ressemble un peu, mais pas trop : juste un peu plus mince.

Il pourrait avoir complètement tort, mais c’est juste l’image qu’il s’est fait de Derek en parlant avec lui. Ça correspond à sa voix aussi et c’est globalement attrayant. Enfin, si tu demandes à Stiles et sa main droite. Sa main droite qui pourrait tenir celle de Derek bientôt oh mon dieu.

Jésus Christ, ses pensées partent dans tous les sens. Il devrait trouver quelque chose à faire avant qu’il devienne fou et fini en une espèce de flaque de baves, pas attrayant du tout, avec le visage contre la table, et s’il y a une chose que Stiles veut, c’est donner une bonne première impression.

Il prend son téléphone et appuie sur la rubrique « Jeux », hésitant une seconde entre le simulateur de Gameboy et une application de puzzle binaire – principalement parce qu’il est du genre indécis et addicte aux deux jeux. Derek était celui qui lui a fait connaitre les puzzles binaires. Il était plus du genre Sudoku avant, mais les puzzles binaires sont beaucoup plus difficiles, donc il est passé à ceux-là.

Il continue de vérifier l’heure, sentant son cœur battre dans sa gorge – encore dix minutes, bordel – il jette un coup d’œil frénétique à chaque fois que la cloche sonne pour prévenir l’arrivée d’un nouveau client. Après quelques minutes – ou une éternité, Stiles ne sait plus –  un homme mince avec des cheveux noirs et des yeux clairs entre, et Stiles est persuadé que c’est Derek, mais l’homme ne le regarde même pas.

Il essuie ses paumes sur son jean – il ne peut pas finir son puzzle parce que ses doigts continuent de glisser, que c’est pathétique – et retourne à son jeu. Quand la cloche sonne de nouveau, un autre gars avec les cheveux noirs et les yeux clairs entre dans le café, mais Stiles tombe presque de sa chaise quand il lui jette un coup d’œil.

Ne vous méprenez pas, le gars est HotTM – et oui, le H en majuscule et la marque déposée sont nécessaire – mais il n’y a pas moyen que ce soit Derek, qui est bien trop mignon pour ressembler à ça. Ce gars semble plus musclé qu’Iron Man. De plus, les sourcils sombres ne dégagent pas vraiment l’atmosphère accueillante de la voix de Derek, alors non. Pas Derek.

Il retourne à son téléphone – déjà deux minutes, merde, où est-il ? Derek ne l’aurait jamais foutu un lapin ; il avait l’air trop excité quand Stiles avait proposé de se rencontrer, sa voix devenant même aiguë. Stiles avait eu envie de jeter une couverture sur lui et de l’étouffer à mort, parce que Derek est tellement mignon que parfois Stiles ne sait plus quoi faire de lui-même.

 « Derek ? »

 L’homme aux sourcils – Derek, apparemment, bordel oh mon dieu – frotte l’arrière de sa tête et baisse les yeux nerveusement, la pointe de ses oreilles devenant rouge. C’est officiel, Stiles est mort. Décédé.

 « Hm, hey ? 

- Tu- il arrive encore à s’étouffer, regardant Derek de haut en bas et sentant son visage prendre feu. Je- quoi… je ne.. »

 Derek sourit, ses yeux s’illuminent alors que la peau autour de ces derniers se plissent et Stiles sent littéralement son cœur s’arrêter un instant. Derek a des fossettes. Et des dents de lapin. Au nom de tout ce qui est saint dans ce monde, qu’est-ce qu’il fait ici avec Stiles ? En dehors du fait qu’ils aiment les mêmes choses, bien sûr, mais.. comment ?

 « Enchanté, dit Derek, s’installant face à lui, je m’appelle Derek Hale.

- Oh mon dieu, est-ce que je peux tenir ta main s’il te plait ? »

 C’est du genre direct, même pour les standards de Stiles, mais il ne peut pas penser à autre chose que ‘Oh mon dieu, Derek est apparemment un mannequin’ et ‘Cher Jésus, je veux passer le reste de ma vie avec lui’, et aucun n’est vraiment approprié pour une première rencontre.

Derek cligne des yeux avant qu’il ne le brise encore une fois avec l’un de ses sourires, le bout de ses oreilles devenant rouge. Il roule encore des yeux avant de dire : « Je suppose que je vais t’accorder ce privilège oui. »

C’est à ce moment-là qu’il se rend vraiment compte de la chose : le modèle de sous-vêtements et le dieu grec assis devant lui est le même mec idiot, ironique avec qui il a parlé depuis des mois. Qui a deux chats, qui porte parfois des gilets et même des lunettes. Stiles est foutu.

Il s’éclate intérieurement avec le refrain de Bohemian Rhapsody quand Derek tend sa main – ses doigts sont plus petits que ceux de Stiles et sa paume est un peu plus large mais Stiles va adorer cette main parce que c’est celle de Derek –  et il l’attrape dans la sienne, prétendant que ses doigts ne tremblent pas.

Derek sourit de nouveau, serre sa main et soudainement, il ressent tout le réconfort et la sécurité.  Stiles lui sourit en retour et se jure de chérir Derek jusqu’à ce qu’il ne veuille plus de lui, éternité ou non. Il ne le laissera jamais partir maintenant.

Those who have already attended the Festival of Music in Montmartre know that this is one of the most festive evenings of the year … Indeed, there are few streets where nothing happens, and some (especially near Abbesses) are known to be among those where there is the most atmosphere (and the biggest sound too!). Here is the program of this 2018 edition with music to satisfy most tastes AND a chance to watch the Peru -France football game …

The band “Chez Mectons of the Bouillon” will perform from 19h30 in front of the restaurant and until 21h30.

The  program for this evening: 2 groups of music for a relaxing evening with friends outdoors to enjoy the terrace and garden. Grilled snacks (beef, chicken or St-Jacques) + drinks (alcohol or soft) will be available

“Animal Cookies” in the early evening (from 19h30 to 22h30): Style is between pop, latin, jazz and groove.  Animal Cookies is an acoustic trio with eclectic offerings. They revisit French and international standards, with arrangements that give an impression of re-discovering well known titles.

“DJ Passenger57” (from 22h30 until 00h30): Sounds of the 80s and the hits of the moment. From Japanese funk to soul classics, Passager57 is a true music encyclopedia.

And sure thing! When it comes to otome, I tend to prefer games that are more plot focused and have strong overarching plots. I also enjoy darker/heavier content, i.e. action, violence and blood, psychological elements–which all sums up why I am so obsessed with Virche haha

But for my recs (which have English localizations):

1. Collar x Malice

I actually consider Collar x Malice my top favourite otome game! It’s a modern crime thriller with an interesting overarching plot, great cast, action, violence, and it makes you think about what justice means to you. It also has my fave otome antagonist of all time. I swear to god, he straight up altered my brain chemicals 😂 this whole game altered my brain chemicals because it made me fall in love with twisted, tragic “romance” (pls play the FD) and bittersweet “good” endings (there was only one like this, but oh man, it hurt me bad). This is the only game aside from Virche where I genuinely love all the LIs and thoroughly enjoyed all the routes. It has a special place in my heart and I definitely recommend it

2. Café Enchanté

Café Enchanté has the same main writer as Virche (and you can tell!!). It’s notorious for looking like a fluffy, slice-of-life from the cover, but once you get into the thick of the plot—OH BOY, the crazy revelations and pain hit hard 😂 I personally loved the drastic tonal shifts. Definitely recommend if you liked the type of writing in Virche

3. Code:Realize

I personally consider this the “objectively” best otome I’ve played so far. It might not be my personal top fave, but it’s the top game I recommend to anyone wanting to get into or play more otome. The plot, the lore, the world building, the characters, their interactions, the romance—it’s all so well developed and put together. It’s a popular one, and I agree it deserves the praise it receives

4. Nightshade

While it doesn’t have the deepest overall plot, I really enjoyed this game because of its strong characters and that it doesn’t shy away from tragedy. Characters who love each other have to fight each other, betray each other, and leave each other because that’s their way of life. All of them have to FIGHT for their happy ending, and most of the time, it comes with a heavy cost. Also, Gekkamaru’s one of my top fave LIs ever. Gekkamaru, if you’re out there… @ me 🤙

Café Enchanté 2019 Halloween SS - 『Trick or Treat!』 English translation

This is one of the only two things I can translate for Café Enchanté... and well it is October. Not sure if or when i’ll get to translating the other thing as I’m mostly focused on Hakuoki Yuugiroku right now (though at a severely reduced pace unfortunately)... also I am not entirely sure if i will be making this post solely available on patreon later due to the nature of the content (aka this came from one of Otomate’s websites and my policy is basically to do things that minimizes potential problems to myself). 

anyway, since my switch isn’t working right now, I didn’t go check to see if I was using game-accurate terms.... and my translation of this story may not be 100% accurate since I did not translate this from Japanese.

Tentative 2022 plans

well... happy late-ish new year. been mostly out of it since saturday because of my booster... and geez, i have not felt this shitty since my 2nd shot. anyway, here’s hoping that this year will not be as crazy as last year... though i won’t hold my breath. having no expectations makes it harder to get disappointed... though i am looking forward to the next hakumyu musicals.

So. stuff for this year.

While id like to say that id normally be trying to have something posted almost every week again this year (not counting jan [spend this month stocking up on translations], feb [CNY this year], march [bday month] and dec [always do less then]), horizon zero west will be released in march... and i know that the game will suck away all of my translating time, provided that it does not have a disastrous release like cyberpunk 2077 lol (what can i say? i love my video games. also horizon zero dawn was absolutely amazing).

For now though, aside from Deemo -Prelude-, and the last 2 short episodes from yuugiroku 3, here’s what im hoping to translate this year... though i have no idea if i’ll get to everything. still, i really do want to finish translating shinsengumi oni-tan and get to translating the shimabara disturbance drama... and I would like to translate more dramas this year (im getting more than a tad sick of yuugiroku hahhaha).

still, i hope that people continue to enjoy the translations i put out because i do find it difficult to post stuff on a regular basis at times  (also im probably more than a tad crazy because i’ve actually managed to do that for 2 years now).

also, i finally got around to cleaning up my master list... though im still not done with my video backlog...
