Fall In Love. 9/10
Story: 10
Acting: 10
Chemistry: 10
Comparable to: Maids Revenge (cdrama) ; Cruel Romance (cdrama)
One of my favorite historical cdrama’s. It takes place in the 1920s (republican era) which is an unique era of a cdrama you don’t see many of. The storyline is executed excellently with just enough mystery, action, melodrama, and romance. The chemistry between the two main leads are brilliantly casted and oofing are they oozing with smexyness together. It does take a few episodes for the momentum to get into, but it’s overall an outstanding drama where you won’t want to stop watching. Warning there also is sensitive subjects of attempted rape and suicide.

大家好! According to tradition, ren ri (humans day) is everyone's birthday and we celebrate it by feasting. Pa and I decided to have jiao zi (steamed dumplings); because they're shaped like ingots, they're believed to bring wealth and prosperity. We ordered prawn and pork as well as vegetarian dumplings and walloped them all. Gosh, they were so delicious!

In the evening, N and I caught up for some red wine and shared lamb, escargot, mozzarella balls with cherry tomatoes, spinach and bacon, as well as margherita pizza. In case I haven't mentioned it earlier, he's half French and very in tune with his Western roots. So when we hang out, Western cuisine is what we usually have, partly also because he loves meat and cheese. N told me he's developed feelings for me and mentioned the L word. I'm deeply fond of him but am not sure if it's L yet; thank goodness he's willing to gimme time to figure it out!

Sunday was kai gong (open for business) lunch with Grace and Douglas. The couple brought in pen cai from Malaysia at a much lower price than it costs here and I bought yu sheng (lo hei) with additional Hokkaido scallops and tobiko. It was a lot to eat for 3 and we were stuffed to the brim! The meal was pretty healthy though, with plenty of veggies and seafood. After that, they gave me some homemade jiao zi (dumplings) to take home with me.

Haven't eaten duck in awhile and apparently, it's the red meat with the lowest amount of vitamin K. Duck breast when done well can be yummier than chicken breast and I requested for it, as well as a braised egg. The protein and veggies sat atop deliciously QQ thin yellow noodles and the meal came with a small bowl of tasty winter melon soup. All this goodness for $5.20. Why eat pasta when the price of 1 can get me about 4 portions of nutritious local fare?

So far, I've held off saying firmly that the war in Gaza is genocide. However, Palestinians are perilously close to a starvation crisis as there isn't enough aid flowing into the devastated area. If a famine occurs and results in massive numbers of deaths, I'll be pushed into saying this war, in my view, is genocide. Only pushing for a ceasefire can save these innocent lives and I'll continue to pray very hard for them. 下次见!

But Wu Yu was not sleepy. The first big case he was involved in had made a breakthrough, and he was focused on it. “I’m fine,” he said, holding his back collar and waving his hand. “I’ve just been refreshed through that rubbing by you. Please help me pull off this tag, it’s a bit prickly.” Cai Lin believes in repaying kindness. The clothes he lent to Zhang Xiaoli and the others were worn-out training sweatshirts that had been worn countless times, while the one he lent to Wu Yu was a brand new unopened Avengers Black Widow T-shirt with a small plastic tag hanging on the back that could poke into the skin with a single movement. Bu Chonghua lowered his head and didn’t glance at his slender and neat neck. He said lightly, “Be independent and don’t boss your leader around for everything.”

BEST OF BL 2021 CATEGORY: FAVOURITE KISSES
I don't know about the rest of you, but a truly great kiss that makes your spine tingle when you're not even participating is one of the things that can make a show for me. Here are my top 5 makeouts of the year.
BEST OF THE BEST
5. Cai and Gav (Elijah Canlas and Kokoy de Santos) | Gameboys: The Movie (The IdeaFirst Company)
Tumblr media
'Let's give them a show' Gav says to Cai, and a show they give indeed. The makeout in the backyard, in full view of any potential nosy neighbours, was simply hot.
4. Teh and Oh Aew (Billkin Putthipong Assaratanakul and PP Krit Amnuaydechkorn) | I Promised You the Moon (Nadao Bangkok/LINE TV) | Episode 1: Ice Breaking
Tumblr media
I'm surprising myself by placing this one so far down the list, but as beautiful and narratively meaningful as it was, the ones ranked higher were simply more electric.
3. Shi De and Shu Yi (Sam Lin and YU) | We Best Love: Fighting Mr. 2nd (Result Entertainment/WeTV) | Episode 2
Tumblr media
Call me a trash panda for this one, I'll own it. It's right on the borderline of consensual, and I'm not entirely sure it falls on the right side of that line, but Shi De's desperation and Shu Yi's inability to resist were so visceral that my mouth was hanging open.
2. Simon and Wille (Omar Rudberg and Edvin Ryding) | Young Royals (Nexiko AB/Netflix) | Episode 2
Tumblr media
The balls it took for Simon to walk up to a literal prince that he's only about 50% certain would welcome the advance and just take that plunge, and the way Wille doesn't want to let the moment pass even though he's only about 50% certain that he's feeling what he's feeling for this beautiful boy...ah young gay love.
1. Pat and Pran (Ohm Pawat Chittsawangdee and Nanon Korapat Kirdpan) | Bad Buddy (GMMTV) | Episode 5
Tumblr media
Kiss of the year. Kiss of the decade. Kiss of the genre. Pat and Pran's passionate rooftop kiss set a new bar for Thai BL. Emotional, electric and narratively critical, it's now the standard.
HONOURABLE MENTION
Tian and Phupha (Mix Sahaphap Wongratch and Earth Pirapat Watthanasetsiri) | A Tale of Thousand Stars (GMMTV) | Episode 10
Tumblr media
Sweet, low heat and yet still somehow one of the most affecting kisses I saw all year. It feels earned, not just for the audience but for the characters as well, and that makes all the difference.

Lan Xiaohui's First Errand

Summary:
“Do you have your hat, A-Yu?”
“Mm!”
“And your basket?”
Lan Yu holds up the meal basket dangling from his arm, full of delicious home-made snacks from his A-Niang’s kitchen. “Xiao-Yu has the basket!”
A week after his fourth birthday, Xiao-Yu sets off on his very first errand.
It goes (mostly) as expected.
O soul, come back! Why should you go so far away? All your household have come to do you honor; all kinds of good food are ready: Rice, broom-corn, early wheat, mixed all with yellow millet; Bitter, salty, sour, hot and sweet: there are dishes of all flavors. Fried honey-cakes of rice flour and malt-sugar sweetmeats; Jade-like wine, honey-flavored, fills the winged cups Ice-cooled liquor, strained of impurities, clear wine, cool and refreshing; Here are laid out the patterned ladles, and here is sparkling wine.
—from Zhao hun (招魂), The Songs of the South
____
“Do you have your hat, A-Yu?”
“Mm!”
“And your basket?”
Lan Yu holds up the meal basket dangling from his arm, full of delicious home-made snacks from his A-Niang’s kitchen. “Xiao-Yu has the basket!”
“Shoes?”
Xiao-Yu kicks up the hem of his short white gown, showing the toes of two tiny cloth boots as his A-Die secures his hat strings. “I have my shoes, too!”
He stands still while Papa inspects the rest of his outfit, making sure that his hair is brushed smooth and that his mo’e is straight, and then he smiles from ear to ear when his parents swoop down to kiss his chubby cheeks.
“Xiao-Yu will be careful,” Lan Yu declares, peering into the precious basket and wriggling with delight at the sight of the wrapped-up snacks tucked neatly inside. “I’ll be good all the way, and bring Shugong his lunch.”
Today is the day of Xiao-Yu’s first errand: now that his fourth birthday has come and gone, he’s finally old enough to begin helping his A-Die and Papa with their duties around the Cloud Recesses, and the first important duty that A-Die decided to delegate to him was the task of delivering a lunch basket to the meishi where his Lan-shugong lives.
“Shufu has been tired lately, so he would rather not go to the senior refectory to dine with the rest of the elders,” Papa explained at breakfast. “He could have his lunch delivered out, but the food from the sect kitchens does not help to build strength. Wei Ying will cook luncheon for all of us and set aside a portion for your Shugong, and you must climb up the stairs to the meishi and deliver it to him.”
A-Yu has never even been allowed up the stone staircase to the meishi without Yuan-gege or his father holding his hands, so he spent the morning of his fateful adventure in the kitchen, almost quivering with excitement as he watched A-Niang prepare their lunch. Today’s lunch is sure to be delicious, since A-Niang made sanxian doupi filled with green onions and sweet succulent shrimp, and fried mustard greens cooked with a sprinkle of sesame seeds—and there is even a pot of hearty vegetable soup, which Xiao-Yu was permitted to stir with an enormous wooden spoon almost longer than he is. Papa packed up the doupi in a clean waxed cloth, and wrapped Shugong’s serving of mustard greens with hot rice and lotus leaves, and A-Niang put the soup in a covered dish and bundled everything into Xiao-Yu’s little reed basket with three steaming honeycakes for Great-uncle’s dessert.
“Maybe I should take it,” Yuan-gege frets now, as Xiao-Yu hefts the basket and trots past the scrubbed wooden table where he, Jingyi-ge, and Qing-jiejie were doing their homework. “Isn’t that too heavy for you, A-Bao?”
“I’m not a baby anymore,” Lan Yu declares. “I can pull A-Die’s vegetable wagon all by myself, and now I’m going to climb up the big stair to Shugong!”
Yuan-gege whips around towards Papa, probably to ask whether someone so small should be climbing up that long, winding staircase all alone, but Xiao-Yu hums his favorite lullaby and continues on his way unperturbed. When he looks back on the threshold, Yuan-gege, Jingyi-ge, and A-Qing-jie have all gone away to study somewhere else; but Papa and A-Die are still there, and A-Yu blows them a kiss before jumping down the porch steps and setting off up the path that leads away from the jingshi.
“I’m a great adventurer, climbing a mountain,” he giggles to himself, as he trundles along the grassy track and passes the smaller, straighter footpath that goes to Uncle Xichen’s hanshi. The main Lan family lives along the slope of a hill, with Shugong’s house at the very top and the jingshi close to the bottom, and Uncle’s house is right in the middle; but the hill only gets steep past the hanshi, which is why Xiao-Yu is never allowed to climb above it alone. Or at least he never was until today, because now Xiao-Yu is big enough to help Papa and A-Die with all the important things they have to do as Excellency and Xinhua-jun, so he’ll get to the top of the hill in no time at all.
During most of his walks through the Cloud Recesses, Xiao-Yu stops to look at wildflowers and peer into fish ponds along the way; but Shugong is counting on him, so he turns away from all the tempting zhuge cai blossoms and plants his chubby little foot on the bottom-most stair, staring dizzily at the steep steps as they climb up, up, up before vanishing from view. He doesn’t have A-Niang’s hand to hang on to, to keep his balance, and it wouldn’t do him any good if he did—because A-Yu has to carry the lunch basket and take care not to spill the hot soup inside, and it takes both of his dimpled hands to keep the basket steady.
“Don’t worry, Shugong! I can do it!” Lan Yu exclaims, climbing up a few more steps before squeaking in alarm as the basket lurches to the side. Xiao-Yu stops and takes off the lid right away, dreading the sight of A-Die’s delicious soup splashed all over the honey cakes—but the tiny soup pot is still tightly closed and shows no signs of leaking, so he marches up the stairs as calmly as he can before coming to a halt again when he hears quiet footsteps behind him.
The hill is completely empty aside from shrubs, a few trees, and Xiao-Yu himself, so he frowns and walks for another minute or two before he spots a pair of footprints in the grass right beside the staircase. A-Yu keeps going this time, blinking curiously when the footprints keep pace with him all the way up the mountain: one set on his left, one on his right, and one on the stairs just six or seven steps below him. They must be friendly ghosts, who saw him by himself and decided to keep him company, but they would have made their presence known if they wanted Lan Yu to see that they were there—so he pretends not to notice them while he climbs the last several chi, putting one foot in front of the other until he struggles up to the top.
“I did it!” he cries, clutching the precious basket to his chest as the meishi comes into view. “Shugong, shugong, Xiao-Yu is here!”
The doors to the meishi slide open as if by magic, and then Great-uncle is there, and Xiao-Yu toddles towards him as fast as he can before offering up the lunch basket.
“A-Yu,” Great-uncle smiles, lifting Xiao-Yu into his arms. “How did you come up all this way alone, ah? You’re too small to walk so far alone.”
“Xiao-Yu was too small,” Lan Yu announces, bubbling like an overexcited teapot when his Shugong peers into the lunchbox and makes appreciative noises at the tasty meal inside. “But now I’m big, so I can bring you food from A-Niang and Papa when you’re not feeling well! Shugong, do you like it?”
Shugong hums low in his throat. “I can see...hm, is that doupi? And Wangji’s favorite honey cakes?”
“It’s A-Niang’s best doupi!” Xiao-Yu nearly glows with joy as Shugong carries him into the house and brings out the food, transferring it to a set of serving dishes with plum blossoms painted on them. He tastes one of the doupi squares first, closing his eyes as the flavor of shrimp and scallions hits his tongue, and Xiao-Yu grabs a stray chopstick and pokes the lid off the soup pot so that Shugong can smell how wonderful it is: light and rich and savory-sweet, with pieces of soft eggplant and red tomatoes floating on top.
“It tastes divine,” Great-uncle praises, unwrapping the lotus-leaf package that holds the rice and mustard greens. “If I eat another meal like this tomorrow, I might be able to run all the way from Gusu to Lanling without even stopping for breath.”
Xiao-Yu dances back down the mountain after that, so quickly that the friendly ghosts who accompanied him on the way up keep falling behind, and collapses into Papa’s arms in the jingshi with all the satisfaction of a job well done.
“Shugong will get all better now,” he sighs, snuggling into his father’s sandalwood-scented robes. “A-Niang’s food is magic.”
“Aiyah, Xiao-Yu,” A-Die teases, as Papa chuckles under his breath and hugs A-Yu a little tighter. “It’s not magic, sweetheart. But Uncle will eat well if he likes his food, and eggplant soup and honey cakes and greens are some of his favorite dishes.”
“Honey cakes are Xiao-Yu’s favorite, too!”
A-Die throws his head back and laughs, and Papa reaches for a honey cake and feeds it to Xiao-Yu piece by piece while he regales them with the story of his perilous trip up the mountain.
“It was so high up, and I got tired,” A-Yu says importantly, licking honey off his fingers. “And there were three nice ghosts with me, but I couldn’t give them a taste of the doupi because it was for Shugong.”
“Such well-mannered ghosts! Did they ask you for some of Shufu’s food?”
“Well…”
____
“There were ghosts on the hill when Xiao-Yu was on his way to the meishi?” Lan Jingyi squawks, peering around the jingshi’s kitchen door. “Where?”
A-Qing reaches up and deactivates her invisibility talisman before pinching Jingyi’s ear.
“Silly melon!” she hisses. “He must have seen our footprints in the grass. We were the ghosts, remember?”
“...Oh. Right.”
“Hush, both of you,” Lan Sizhui whispers, his heart swelling to nearly twice its size as A-Yu yawns and falls asleep right in Xian-ge’s lap. “We can’t let Yu’er know we were there, so hush and go along with him when he asks you to help him look for his ghosts, all right?”
(And with that, the three of them tiptoe away, leaving little Xiao-Yu to his dreams in the warmth of his parents’ arms.)

do you know why cai xukun left swin? I'm confused about what happened to that group and why they all separated, but I'm clueless as to where / how to find more information about them! If you could explain a bit, that would truly be so helpful, thank you!!!
hi! kunkun was in the music/dance subunit of swin, swin-s, and left after their debut ep, new world. he was in their 《New World》 mv here and their 《只因你太美》dance practice video here. he was also in their 161112 dorm livestream here, where he was roommates with liu ye (uwu!!).
but alas pelias is a Shit Company that Doesn’t Know how to Manage Talent or the Promotion and Marketing of Idols… and kunkun realised it early (end 2016, after new world was released) and got himself out of there before his career went down the drain. no official post was ever released by pelias, understandably, and i doubt kunkun would ever want to talk about it publicly, but it’s been more or less accepted as such based on how the other swin members have described their years in pelias (no promotions, few comebacks opportunities, being pushed into acting etc).
but after he left pelias, kunkun made it to beijing where he stayed alone, learnt how to play the guitar alone, learnt producing alone, picked up music alone, without any source of financial income for an entire year until he got picked up for idol producer.
swin-s used to be six: cai xukun, wu muti, he yifan, yu gengyin, zhao pinlin and liu ye. there was also another sub-unit of swin called swin-e, which basically were all the ‘entertainers’ (actors lmao): zuo qibo, zhu yunlong, gouchen haoyu and tian shuchen. typing all their names out make my heart hurt?? five of them left (muti, fanfan, kunkun, gengyin, huadi) but five of them are still in swin (pinlin, liu ye, zuozuo, yunlong, gouhao)!!
wu muti: the youngest (990707), 1/3 of didi line, sweetest baby angel, the first one to make friends with everyone on super idol, fluent in korean, spoiled the most by his geges along with kunkun. he went on to participate in under nineteen after he left swin, and he’d probably have gotten into the final group too if they didn’t make him leave the show because of visa issues.
he yifan: second youngest (980822), 1/3 of didi line, cheeky lil bitch, sunshine meme boy, would bicker with kunkun over anything. he went on to participate in all for one after he left swin and turned into a yeehaw boy but because youku is a shady bitch and kept changing rules left and right, pulled out of the show halfway. he was really good though and all the swin boys said he rly grew up so much!! he’s now in ONEGROUP with zhao fangzhou (also on super idol)!
yu gengyin: leader of swin-s (960428), responsible half of main vocal line, soft warm boy, knows every single jj lin song by heart, used to livestream regularly, quite possibly the love of my life. he’s swin’s Biggest Fan and if any past or present member goes on a survival show gengyin’s the first to post support and cheer them on ;n; he was also a mentor on another show《青春最强音》. he released the cutest song 《特别的安排》recently, and just wrapped up filming for a movie!! i translate for him sometimes here.
tian shuchen: ¼ of swin-e (941026), pretends to be fierce but is a puppy, has a dog called zongzi (rice dumpling). unlike the rest of them who left swin because pelias crap that doesn’t deserve them, huadi revealed that he left swin because of zhao pinlin. he also went on all for one after he left swin and debuted in one of their two final groups, BlackACE. his group, BlackACE, has released two songs, fission and because of you. check out more subbed content here!
as ot9, they made two more comebacks - ep1 on 170717 (《告别少年》mv here, 《发光的星体》mv here and the cutest song 《和你去海边》dance practice here) and ep2 on 180109 (《BFGF》christmas version here and 《不解释》mv here). they also had a group variety show but they had to stop it after three episodes.
as ot5, we got 《25Hours》on 180928 and 《动听醋语》on 181013!
zhao pinlin: still in swin! 1/3 of swin-s’ gege line (940629) but the youngest in ot5 swin, brat half of swin-s’ main vocal line, grouches a lot but would kill for his boys (especially ex-roommate gengyin). he also went on all for one as part of the three members of swin they sent on and all his performances were amazing!!! he ended up debuting in one of the two final groups of all for one as first place (!!!!!!). his group, BlackACE, has released two songs, fission and because of you. check out more subbed content here!
he was also the one who went to look for kunkun in beijing after kunkun left swin, and was the first one kunkun called when he got the centre position in idol producer ;;;;; he didn’t tell kun that he was participating in all for one because he didn’t want to bother him, but pinlin ended up debuting in first place too ;;;;;;;;;;
liu ye: still in swin! 1/3 of swin-s’ gege line (931115), dance prodigy, hid his age for three whole years until he got exposed as a 93 liner on produce camp, the softest shyest angel, used to be kunkun’s roommate, easily teased but would die with any of his friends. he’s gone on street dance of china and produce camp! he ended up debuting in r1se, produce camp’s final group, in 8th place (!!!!) despite tencent’s reluctance to give him any screen time at all. although he’s still in swin, he’s no longer under pelias - that piece of shit company sold his contract to 1cm some time in the middle of produce cam. i translate for him sometimes here!
gouchen haoyu: still in swin! 940427, the sweetest swin boy, constantly showering love and affection, purest cat boy - he has a tattoo of a cat on his left shoulder and his cats are called dough stick (youtiao) and soymilk (doujiang) and he posts videos with them all the time sobs!! he also hangs out with / cat sits for xia zhiguang (x-nine, r1se)!! he also went on all for one as part of the three members of swin they sent on. he ended up debuting in one of the two final groups of all for one, called New Storm!!
zhu yunlong: still in swin! old man (920413), singaporean, girl group dance lover, looks sweet but would probably kill you in your sleep. he also went on all for one as part of the three members of swin they sent on but got SNAKED by youku!!! he’s currently filming something with gouhao.
zuo qibo: still in swin! another old man (920119), actor and the member with the most solo songs, including 《世界将我包围》(the world surrounds me),《这是爱》(this is love, an ost for a show he acted in) and 《I Won’t Cry》! he also went on the next top bang but also got snaked by dragon tv. honestly, he’s probably the most consistently employed in swin.
as for how to keep up with them, i follow the boys, their work studios and their fanclubs on weibo! also the SWIN and 星动一班 chaohuas are great for constant emo swin hours (not that it’s never emo swin hours in this household).
anyway i hope this helps!!!!! ;u;

Meteor Garden (2001) Recap: Episode 1
Hi folks, it's 2019 and I'm finally fulfilling my childhood resolution to watch this drama. You have no idea - Meteor Garden was such a hit back in the day. However, back then it was only available either at specific time slots on TV or on crappy VCDs that were passed around the community (i.e. schoolgirls and aunties). I never could be bothered to watch it properly.
Imagine my surprise when I chanced across it on Netflix. I am aware that there's a 2018 remake of Meteor Garden, as well as the Japanese Hana Yori Dango and the Korean Boys Over Flowers, but the 2001 Taiwanese version is the original drama that spawned the madness. The buzz around the 2018 version is laughably negligible compared to the craziness in 2001. I'm so ready to experience the magic of 流星花园.
So without further ado, here we go.
Episode 1: Summary
Tumblr media
We are introduced to Shan Cai (Barbie Hsu), who rides a crappy scooter to school. Right off the bat we realize that the school caters to the rich and the elite, where students are decked out in designer wear and get NT500000 (~ USD16000) nose jobs during the school holidays.
Tumblr media
The fashion rivalry between classmates Bai He (Belinda Cheng) and Qian Hui (Zhang Ruo Zhen) cracks me up. It's petty, exaggerated, and deliciously obnoxious, solidly setting us viewers up with the premise of a school drama about rich kids.
A very normal Li Zhen (An-ting Yeh) appears to be Shan Cai's classmate and friend. She's pretty serious about her homework, having borrowed extra books to read up for the upcoming report assignment. Shan Cai laughs that Li Zhen might be the only student serious about studying in this school, everyone else comes to socialize instead. I’m guessing Li Zhen is on scholarship and needs to maintain her grades.
We cut to a classroom with a boy clearing out his books in order to drop out of the school. A crowd forms around him and the teacher (Bu Xue Liang) approaches to find out why he is leaving and to persuade him not to. However, upon finding out that the boy had offended F4, the teacher doesn't push the matter and instead encourages the boy to leave. Shan Cai watches helplessly from the sidelines and rolls her eyes at the hypocritical teacher.
In class, in a further act of hypocrisy, the teacher gives a lecture on the value of conscience.
Conscience. It's what we call 'moral courage'. It's the most basic quality mankind should have. In Chinese history, Confucius had the strongest conscience. Today, we'll discuss his core thinking. It focuses on benevolence. By benevolence, it means you do unto others what you would want them to do unto to you.
Unable to stomach his empty words, Shan Cai leaves the classroom in a huff. She heads to the roof launching a tirade against the unfairness of the University and coins the term "Pig Head 4". "So what if your family owns the school," she declares. "You better not mess with me. I'll never submit to you."
The 4 in question are just arriving at the University in their comfortable chauffeured rides. We get to watch the boys saunter around and the camera obliges with close ups on each one of them as they stride into campus.
Tumblr media
Dao Ming Si (Jerry Yan aka Yan Cheng Xu)
Tumblr media
Hua Ze Lei (Vic Zhou aka Zai Zai aka Zhou Yu Min)
Tumblr media
Xi Men (Ken Chu aka Zhu Xiao Tian)
Tumblr media
Mei Zhuo (Vanness Wu aka Wu Jian Hao)
Shan Cai and friend watch in horror as the teacher accidentally bumps into Dao Ming Si, spilling coke all over him. Apologizing frantically, he kneels over Dao Ming Si, attempting to wipe the soda off his shoes. Dao Ming Si ignores his apologies and we get to hear his trademark catchphrase, "If apologizing is enough, what do we need police for?"
Dao Ming Si waves the teacher off to the side and viciously kicks over the basket of balls while striding off. Shan Cai gapes in amazement at his arrogance. Suddenly, a hand reaches out to righten the fallen basket. It's Hua Ze Lei (known as Lei to his friends), who has a perpetually blank expression on his face and appears to be the only member of the F4 who isn't a douche. While adjusting the basket, he turns and makes brief eye contact with Shan Cai, then hurries off after Dao Ming Si.
At the cafe where Shan Cai works part time, she complains to her co-worker Xiao You (Rainie Yang) about her awful school and the awful boys. It’s exposition time! We learn that F4 Stands for Flower 4, and the boys belong to 4 rich and influential families who own the school. When Xiao You prompts her to confirm that the boys are really all that bad, Shan Cai hesitates and says that maybe one of the 4 is “different”. Methinks she’s starting to have a crush on someone!
As the two continue their conversation, we learn that Shan Cai used to be very outspoken against bullies, in contrast with her current passive nature. Xiao You remarks that she hardly recognizes the Shan Cai now. Inwardly, Shan Cai agrees, hating herself for turning into a coward.
When Shan Cai returns home, she makes an attempt to tell her family she doesn’t want to continue studying at this school. Unfortunately, her mother would hear nothing of it. Turns out her mother had pulled strings to get her daughter into the elite Yingde University. Her mother is fixated on Shan Cai getting a good boyfriend from school and networking well with people from high society so that their family can ascend into a higher social strata. Shan Cai’s poor dad gets berated by his wife for not getting a promotion for the past many years, unlike their neighbors. As the parents bicker, the resentments pile up, making for very awkward dinner conversation. In order to pacify them, Shan Cai promises that she would continue to study at Yingde University.
Tumblr media
What a weird couple.
That evening, the F4 hang out at a bar. The boys appear unaccustomed to such a venue, noting with puzzlement that the establishment doesn't serve foie gras or vintage wine. We get to hear them in conversation for the first time ever, teasing Dao Ming Si about his unruly hair and his rigorous hairstyling session to tame it. Lei remains ever silent, using only a thumbs down gesture to communicate his opinion on Dao Ming Si’s new hairstyle. Throughout the night, he keeps staring at his mobile, as if awaiting a call.
Tumblr media
It turns out that the boys are only there because Xi Men's latest girl wanted to meet Xi Men at the bar. Which begs the question - why are the other 3 following  Xi Men on his date?! In any case, according to show logic, it’s the right course of action as everyone is present when the loser boyfriend of Xi Men’s girl shows up with a gang of hooligans and causes a scene. The boys slip into action and begin beating up the hooligans. All except Lei, who gets up and slips the owner of the bar NT15000 (~USD500) for the damages before leaving.
The next day at school, Shan Cai stands up for Li Zhen who had accidentally tripped and spilled dirt all over Dao Ming Si. I actually feel sorry for the poor dude who keeps getting things spilled on him. To put a stop to Li Zhen’s apologies, Dao Ming Si does his usual rough shove and pushes Li Zhen into the wall, incurring the wrath of Shan Cai. She shouts at him, calling him a parasite leeching off his parents and declares that the F4 should be called Pig Head 4. Dao Ming Si announces that she has some nerve and stalks away. As the four boys walk past, she thinks to herself that she's going to be dead meat.
At home, she receives zero support from her parents when she mentions once again that she wants to quit school. Instead her manipulative mother fakes a panic attack that miraculously subsides when Shan Cai promises to finish her studies. That night, Shan Cai sleeps restlessly, dreaming of being tormented.
At school, Shan Cai receives the F4 red card and a series of montages show how her life becomes hell. Everyone shuns her, even Li Zhen and Shan Cai is subjected to prank after prank. Finally, a drenched and annoyed Shan Cai escapes to the roof. She leans over the ledge and yells her heart out, cursing the Pig Head 4 with bankruptcy and high cholesterol, for their bodies to be ripped apart by horses and their souls to go to hell. Haha, how inventive. She doesn’t realize that Lei was on the roof too, privy to her outburst. She startles when he asks her if there was anything else. What a delightfully awkward moment. Shan Cai backs away warily as Lei leans forward, but he was only offering her his handkerchief. She accepts it and dabs at her wet hair. Softening up to Lei, she thanks him and begins to apologies for her earlier curses. However Lei cuts her short saying “I’m not interested in other people’s business.” He turns to leave and Shan Cai makes to return him the handkerchief. He ignores the gesture and tells her to throw it away as it is already garbage anyway.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
What an awful thing for Shan Cai to hear. He is insinuating that because she used the handkerchief, the handkerchief no longer has any value to him and deserves to be in the trash. Shan Cai thinks back to her earlier assessment of Lei and concludes that he must not be so different from the other 3 after all.
Tumblr media
The episode ends with Shan Cai heading home with her scooter. Except this time she has to wheel it along the road because her fellow students had damaged it. A flashy convertible pulls up beside her, and Dao Ming Si leans out to gloat at her. He tells her that he’s impressed with her determination, and will work harder to humiliate her.
Episode 1: Thoughts
Oh where do I begin! This episode does a good job of setting up so many interesting characters, especially the F4. Dao Ming Si appears cocky and rude, but he's the quintessential bad boy. I fully expect a redeeming arc on how he is actually a big softie. In contrast, Lei is mysterious and charming. I wonder what's the story behind his anti social behavior. The other two members kind of fade into the background as we haven't actually seen them do anything except pose and strut around. As for our heroine, Shan Cai, I suppose she's relatable enough as a first lead. We’ve met her family, schoolmates and friends and have a decent insight into her motivations for her actions. I'm so excited for her to show some spunk and challenge the boys to a showdown soon.
Despite being 18 years old, the show retains its charm. Unfortunately, fashion-wise the show has not aged well at all. What we have here is literally a time capsule of dated 90s trends such as spaghetti strap tops, rebonded hair and frameless spectacles. Plus Dao Ming Si’s ridiculous bandanna is just absurd.
We know in hindsight that this show kickstarted the entertainment careers of these 4 actors of F4. In 2001, after Meteor Garden aired, Sony Music Taiwan signed the 4 boys as an actual boyband bearing the name F4. It’s amazing how these formerly virtually unknown 4 individuals owe their success to this show.
Onward to the next episode!

Some of my “Permission” links tend to expire (?) after a while for some strange reason probably related to their nature as private posts. It’s very tedious to edit all the affected comics each time it happens, so I’ll be linking future comics to this masterlist instead :’D

Chinese tea culture and the influence
The Chinese people, in their drinking of tea, place much significance on the act of “savoring.” “Savoring tea” is not only a way to discern good tea from mediocre tea, but also how people take delight in their reverie and in tea-drinking itself. Snatching a bit of leisure from a busy schedule, making a kettle of strong tea, securing a serene space, and serving and drinking tea by yourself can help banish fatigue and frustration, improve your thinking ability and inspire you with enthusiasm. You may also imbibe it slowly in small sips to appreciate the subtle allure of tea-drinking until your spirits soar up and up into a sublime aesthetic realm. Buildings, gardens, ornaments and tea sets are the elements that form the ambiance for savoring tea. A tranquil, refreshing, comfortable and neat locale is certainly desirable for drinking tea. Chinese gardens are well known in the world and beautiful Chinese landscapes are too numerous to count. Teahouses tucked away in gardens and nestled beside the natural beauty of mountains and rivers are enchanting places of repose for people to rest and recreate themselves.
China is a country with a time-honored civilization and a land of ceremony and decorum. Whenever guests visit, it is necessary to make and serve tea to them. Before serving tea, you may ask them for their preferences as to what kind of tea they fancy and serve them the tea in the most appropriate teacups. In the course of serving tea, the host should take careful note of how much water is remaining in the cups and in the kettle. Usually, if the tea is made in a teacup, boiling water should be added after half of the cup has been consumed; and thus the cup is kept filled so that the tea retains the same bouquet and remains pleasantly warm throughout the entire course of tea-drinking. Snacks, sweets and other dishes may be served at tea time to compliment the fragrance of the tea and to allay one’s hunger.
The formation and development of Chinese tea culture
China is the hometown of tea, is the world’s first discovery of tea, tea and the use of tea cultivation countries. The origin of tea at least the main Qi Wannian history. Tea was found and the use of human, about Siwuqiannian history.
In accordance with “The Book of Songs” and other relevant documentation, in the pre-history, “Tu” refers to all types of wild plants bitterness of food raw materials. Fresh medical unity in the history of the times, the Zhike tea vegetable oil, the Qing God, Xiaoshi, in addition to Zhang, the medical function is to facilitate wait until it is not difficult for people found. However, the general medical practices for the development of an exclusive drink often, there must also be some special factors, namely, real-life people in a particular need. Bashu region, to the multiple for Jiyi “Zhang smoke” land. “Barbarian people living with tea, the lack of will.” (Ai Qing weeks of “Zhu Guo Travels” Volume II) is often vulgar Bashu people eating spicy side, thousands of habit, still. It is this natural geographical conditions and the resulting decision of the people’s dietary practices, making Bashu people first “JIANCHALING” Apart from taking to Zhang Qi, antipyretic drugs. Jiufu-Xi, a medicinal purpose gradually Subduction, tea has become a daily drink was. Qin-Ba-Shu is likely to see this as a daily drink tea customs.
Tea from the medicinal drink into a regular habit, the strict sense of “tea” would then have its typical signs that “tea” (cha) the emergence of sound. Guo Pu Note “Yi-release”, “Jia”: “small trees such as gardenia, Dong-Sheng Ye, can be boiled for soup to drink. As early as today called for the mining, tea, who was admitted late Ming, a Chuan, Shuren of the TU. “Clearly, the Han,” Tu “has been specifically beverage word” tea “in pronunciation,” tea “from” Tu “isolated, and embarked on the” independence “road of development. But “tea” the emergence of the word is accompanied by the development of the tea things and commercial activities have become increasingly frequent, until later in the Tang Dynasty, is also in line with the new symbol of a people’s social life after such a text change in the law.
China will start from the tea, There are different theories about, the Western Han Dynasty, tea drinking has been a matter of the official literature, drinking tea when the starting time earlier than some. Tea appears to cultural characteristics, in the Han, Wei and Jin Dynasty, Northern and Southern Dynasties period.
Tea Culture Broadly speaking, the tea at the natural sciences and humanities tea in terms of both human society is in the process of the historical practice of creating and tea-related material and spiritual wealth combined. In a narrow sense, focusing on the human sciences tea, tea mainly refers to the spiritual and social functions. As the science of tea has become an independent system, which now often say the tea culture emphasis on the humanities.
The influence of tea culture on Chinese civilization
1、the three countries before the tea culture of the Enlightenment
Many of the books found that the tea set for 2737-2697 BC, its history can be pushed to Sanhuangwudi. Eastern Han Hua, “The Fresh”: “Kucha for food, meaning benefits” of the medical records of the value of tea. Western Han Dynasty tea to the country of origin named “Tu-Ling”, that is, Hunan Chaling. To San Guowei generation “-Blair” has the earliest documented the method of tea cakes and drinking: Story of the Pakistani Inter-for cake, a pie-old man leaves to a paste of rice. Tea in the form of material and infiltration to other human sciences and the formation of tea culture.
2、Jin Dynasty, the seeds of the Northern and Southern Dynasties tea culture
With the rise of the literati tea, the tea poetry Gough increasingly available, tea has been out as a general form of eating into the cultural circles, will play the spirit of social role. Jin Dynasty, Northern and Southern Dynasties period, Menfa system has been formed, not only the emperor, nobility amassed a wave of officials and scholars generally proud boast, multi-effect Plaster Liang Hou Wei. In this case, some people of insight to “Yang Lian.”
Thus, there is satisfied that the land, Huanwen to tea and wine at all. South Qishizuwu emperor is a relatively enlightened Emperor, he did not Hei Yu Yan, under Yi Zhao before his death, he said after the funeral to be thrifty as possible, not to Sansheng for offerings, only put more Ganfan, fruit cake and Chafan can. And to “the world Guijian, with such a system.” Satisfied that the land, Huanwen, Emperor Wu Qi, where tea is not only refreshing to quench their thirst, it began work in a community, into a tea hospitality, to worship and that a Kind of spirit and sentiment of the means. Tea has not entirely the use of its natural value used by the people but entered the spirit of the area.
Wei, Jin and Southern and Northern Dynasties period, the world disorder, all kinds of ideological and cultural exchanges collision, supernaturalism very popular. Metaphysics is the period of the Wei, Jin, a philosophical idea, mainly糅合Confucian thinking of the Lao Zi and Zhuang Zi-yi. Xuan Xuejia most of the so-called Fellows, the first to the door, the face, the instrument only, Hyun-loving nothingness from the light. Eastern Jin Dynasty, furans North Korea, the affluent Kangnam Scholars to be temporary to meet, hang around all day in Qingshanxiushui between the light winds to continue to develop, resulting in many light homes. Initially, there are more than idle talk Jiutu home, and later, talk of the wind gradually developed to the general literate.
