Top 6 shelved dramas that I would still really like to see

Ranked in no particular order, selection based on my personal tastes.

1) The Prisoner of Beauty

Plot : Adapted from the novel "Zhe Yao" by Peng Lai Ke, it tells the story of the arranged marriage between Wei Shao (Liu Yuning) and Qiao Man (Song Zuer). The fun thing about this marriage is that they both hate each other for complicated family reasons (in the novel Qiao Man's family is directly responsible for the death of Wei Shao's father), so they start they relationship by trying to make the life of the other a living hell. Ultimately, their relationship will develop as they are impressed by each other's ingenuity and discover common interests. There is also an important "let's protect the empire and the common people" plot behind the romance.

Why I wish I could see it : It looks good !! The main duo of actors are both really good looking, but the production in general looks really high budget, with good costumes and sets. I would love to see that. Just look at this trailer !

Why I am not seeing it any time soon : Song Zuer :/ bestie :/ tax evasion is bad !!

Can we have some hope ? : Not really, at this point of time, no c-actors caught for tax evasion managed to make an actual comeback in the industry (even really popular ones like Deng Lun or Fan Bing Bing). Song Zuer is still being investigated, so maybe we can hope to see her name cleared but it's a little unlikely because they don't investigate people just for fun. However Song Zuer was involved in a lot of high budget projects so I am sure a lot of people are really motivated to try to airdrop at least some of her projects if they have the possibility.

2) The Fated General

Plot : Classic high-budget historical drama telling the story of real life historical figure Huo Qubing (Zhang Ruoyun) during the Western Han Dynasty. It follows his military feats that got him the reputation of being one of the best military generals in the history of China.

Why I wish I could see it : First, the cast is incredible. We have Zhang Ruoyun (famous for being really good at choosing his scripts), Mao Xiao Tong, Bai Yu, Li Hongyi, Xu Yue, and others. It's really an all star cast except the drama was shot in 2016, before some of them became really famous, so it can be really interesting to watch ! Plus it's a really high budget drama, most of the outdoor scenes are shot in real landscape and not in a studio and it globally looks really good. For a better impression, look at this nice looking MV based on the different trailers of the show :

Why I am not seeing it any time soon : In 2019 (I think ?) the censorship rules changed concerning historical dramas and established the fact that dramas were forbidden to "distort" certain historical facts. This kind of put an end to traditional historical dramas as they became a way more risky investments, and stopped this one from airing as it already took some liberties in terms of storytelling. Huo Qubing is also a semi-controversial historical figure so it is not helping.

Can we have some hope ? : It's been 7 or 8 years and the regulations concerning historical fiction only got more restrictives in China so I would say no.

3) Immortality

Plot : I'm sure everybody knows the plot of Erha so I don't need to write it but just in case the important tags are : xianxia, dangai, shizunfuckers, reincarnation, blood spitting, stairs, ...

Why I wish I could see it : Outside of the obvious reasons (gay people on my screen, Luo Yunxi spitting blood), it's also produced by the same people involved in the production of Till the End of the Moon and Shui Long Yin, so I have I hopes for the artistic direction of the drama. Also for dmbj fans : did you know Liu Chang played a guest role in this drama ? Idk what he is doing here but I would love to see it.

Why I am not seeing it any time soon : We are all aware of the famous 2021 dangai ban, but in general the chinese government is not a big fan of massive and really agitated fandoms (in the way The Untamed fandom was), so Immortality is in a pretty bad position.

Can we have some hope ? : Yeah !!!!! Hyx TOMORROW !!! Believe in your dreams !!!

For real : Two options. 1) On a random morning of the year 20XX you wake up to danmei fans in your tl losing their marbles bc the 6 first episodes of hyx were randomly airdropped during the night with no promotion and no warnings. You cry some tears of joy and immediately go watch Luo Yunxi spit some blood on screen. 2) After many years hyx is still not out but there were so many leaks that the fans managed to recreate the entire series from scraps and now you can watch it in full. Look, they already started :

4) Night Wanderer

Plot : Zong Yin (Ni Ni) is a forensic expert living in Shanghai in 2021. She met, in her own apartment, a man, called Sheng Qing Rang (Deng Lun), claiming to be the owner of this apartment but in 1937. Together they discover that they can travel to their respective time periods through their shared apartment and start to develop a strong relationship, first as confidence and progressively as lovers. However, the situation get complicated as the Battle of Shanghai broke out in 1937 putting both of their lives in danger.

Why I wish I could see it : First, for lesbian reasons as I would never miss an occasion to stare at Ni Ni for 36 episodes (Wang Yuwen also has a supporting role here and I really like her ! Double win !). Second, it's actually a really nice and original plot for a CDrama and I have full confidence in both actors' capacity to pull off a really good performance to go with it. Look at this trailer ! It looks so promising !

Why I am not seeing it any time soon : Deng Lun !!! Tax evasion is bad !!

Can we have some hope ? : Even less than for The Prisoner of Beauty as Deng Lun is 100% proved to have committed tax evasion. There is often rumors about him coming back to acting but it's unlikely.

5) Winner is King

Plot : Based on the novel "Sha Po Lang" by Priest, set in a steampunk version of the Liang Dynasty. It tells the story of Chang Geng (Chen Zhe Yuan), a young man living in a random countryside village, who discovers after a raid on their village that the closest people around him were hiding a big secret about his identity. He also discovers that the people around him are not who they pretend to be, especially his yifu (adoptive father, played by Tan Jianci), and realizes that his life will never be the same.

Why I wish I could see it : Outside of the reasons already mentioned in hyx's case, Winner is King is also directed by the same director as Guardian and a Journey to Love. I really like his work and he proved that he was able to do really good things even with a really low budget, so now imagine with a decent amount of money ? It could be great. Also I really like the idea of an ancient china steampunk but I am too lazy to read the book.

Why I am not seeing it any time soon : Same reason as hyx and all the other dangais </3 Also I am not sure of how advanced the production was when it was stopped, because I feel like there are not as many content leaks.

Can we have some hope ? : If we can manifest hard enough the end of the ban, it is possible.

6) The Love of Hypnosis

Plot : During the end of Qing Dynasty, a (patriotic) young man named Yen Shen (Jing Boran) meets a fragrance shop owner named Lu Man Sheng (Liu Yifei). Man Sheng has the special ability/ mission to relieve the hearts of people suffering because of love, but it does not mean that her own romantic life is easier to deal with. Together they fall in love and have to navigate the really troubled times of the end of Qing Dynasty.

Why I wish I could see it : If you are familiar with Liu Yifei and Jing Boran acting I'm sure you can see the potential of this pairing ??? Just the poster has more on screen chemistry than some pairings have in 40 episodes. At this point the plot could be written by a cat walking on a keyboard and I would still have hope for a good chemistry. Also the drama has Liu Mintao in a supporting role and I am in love with her so it's a plus.

Why I am not seeing it any time soon : First, there are some copyright issues with the original manhwa author. Second, the second male lead, Zhao Lixin, got more or less canceled a few years back for political reasons (sorry I don't have the details).

Can we have some hope ? : I would say maybe a little. Copyright issues can be solved and I've heard that Zhao Lixin is still shooting in dramas, meaning that there is hope for some of his stuff still being released.

Mostly Wen Kexing (he's so continuously on it it's hard to pick a scene), but it reaches the true peak annoyingness once Zhou Zishu starts to flirt back. That one time Ye Baiyi was so peeved with them he literally told them to go fuck each other or shut up...

Their first "meeting" is them killing a guy together with HJC doing the murder and Kou Tong over the comms helping him figure out which guy is the guy they need to kill. The comms cut after the fighting starts, and then basically a minute later HJC calls Kou Tong back with "Let me just ask, handsome, can you tell me your personal contact information?" Then when they meet for real its soooo bad (affectionate). My favorites were Huang Jinchen embarrassing Kou Tong in front of his dead mom (long story) to pay him back for teasing him, and Kou Tong replying to Huang Jinchen asking him out with "whatever there is to discuss, we'll discuss in bed". Theyre such clowns

I'm guessing few people know this couple especially considering good TL was deleted(sob) so first a quick intro: Shen Qianling is an actor from the modern world who transmigrated into a wuxia world. Worst part? The person he transmigrated as is engaged to a man! And the man is a huge weirdo! So Shen Qianling resolves to do everything in his power to break the engagement. You Can Guess How Well That Works Out for the MC of a danmei novel lol So the annoying flirt in question is exactly SQL's husband-to-be, Qin Shaoyu. He's constantly going "wife~" and making dramatic declarations of love... especially in front of others. Shen Qianling is onto his insincere ass! (They're really kinda theater kid x theater kid tbh, both are acting and pretending a lot.) Later it's actually revealed that Qin Shaoyu had a reason to act like that and provoke SQL all the time, but by that time SQL's (lack of) swag has deeply captivated him, so he just goes from annoying flirting(insincere) to annoying flirting(affectionate).

Luo Binghe's love language is literally cooking! He starts making Shen Qingqiu's meals as a teenager, then makes him three meals a day for the 5 years Shen Qingqiu is dead, and ofc cooks for him regularly after they get together. Binghe's congee might as well be a symbol of their love at this point!

Submission:

Liu Qi x Bai Chuan is a "masterful cook x ultimate foodie" couple. Not only is Liu Qi an amazing cook, his cooking is actually what first draws Bai Chuan to him. To quote: "Not long later, Liu Qi served up two dishes of home-cooked food. Tomatoes and scrambled egg, vegetables stir-fried with smoked meat, and a large bowl of fish soup." And then, a few paragraphs later: "Liu Wi once again entered the kitchen and made two bowls of noodles, added in two eggs, and topped it with a few slices of cooked beef." And then: "Liu Qi rolled his eyes at Bai Chuan's antics and asked, 'What do you still want to eat? Want me to add in another dish of fried prawns?'" And so on. Bai Chuan, being the river god, brings in all the seafood they want for Li Qi to cook: "With a shake of his sleeves, a heap of seafood that could be found in the river came out from his sleeves, making pitter-patter sounds when they landed on the floor as they were still alive and jumping around energetically. Frantically, Liu Qi called out for him to stop so he could use a small basin to pick up the prawns. The remaining fish and crabs were stored in a bamboo basket for their next meal." Even better, they split the chores! Bai Chuan uses his river god-powers to act as a magical dishwasher after Liu Qi's done cooking. Peak domestic. What harmony.

Not specifically romantic yearning, but Shen Qingqiu holding on to and taking care of Luo Binghe's sword while he was in the abyss, seemingly refusing to admit the "truth" that Luo Binghe was dead? Yeah, Shen Qingqiu was definitely feeling emotions he was not ready to acknowledge imo

Then things happen to Song Qingshi, and you get Yue Wuhuan spending 3,000 years waiting for Song Qingshi to reincarnate. And then the lore drops, and you find out that then-newly-ascended-stone Song Qingshi had already been mesmerized by Phoenix-God Yue Wuhuan ten thousand years before the story started. And *then* the background of the universes' worldbuilding is revealed, and you realize that Yue Wuhuan had actually been waiting for Song Qingshi for literally hundreds of millions of years, long before these two ever even had human forms. You want "long-ass time"? Here's your long-ass time. (And on that note, if you enjoy MXTX books and want to read something that's an unholy mixture of SVSSS and TGCF cranked up to 100000%, please read MisVil.)

WS016.1, Biography of Tuoba Shao

(He is occasionally referred to as Yuan Shao in other parts of the Book of Wei, however his actual clan name was Tuoba. Youthful little traitor. Also cannibalism and incest)

The Prince of Qinghe, Shao, was sealed in the sixth year of Tianxing (403 AD). [He was] vicious, contrary, dangerous and conflictful, and did not follow moral instruction. He was fond of frivolously walking in alleys, stealing and stripping pedestrians, chopping and shooting dogs and pigs, using this as entertainment [BS016: There was a pregnant woman, Shao sliced [her open] to look at the fetus.] Taizu [Emperor Daowu/Tuoba Gui] was angry at him, hung him upside down in a well, and pulled him out when he was dying.

清河王紹，天興六年封。兇佷險悖，不遵教訓。好輕遊里巷，劫剝行人，斫射犬豕，以為戲樂。太祖嘗怒之，倒懸井中，垂死乃出。

Taizong [Emperor Mingyuan/Tuoba Si] would often rebuke him with righteous principles, thereupon their relationship was not harmonious, [Taizong] constantly feared him causing unrest. Then Shao's mother, a consort of the He [1] clan, had an offense, and Taizu imprisoned her in the palace, and would kill her. At sunset, the case was unsolved.

太宗常以義方責之，遂與不協，恒懼其為變。而紹母夫人賀氏有譴，太祖幽之於宮，將殺之。會日暮，未決。

Consort He reported secretly to Shao:

"How will you rescue me?"

Shao thus by night plotted with his subordinates and eunuchs, counting several people, crossed into the palace, violating a ban [2]. Those attending the emperor cried:

"Traitors have arrived!"

Taizu was surprised, requested a bow and a sword, but did not obtain [them], thereupon died violently.

賀氏密告紹曰：「汝將何以救吾？」紹乃夜與帳下及宦者數人，踰宮犯禁。左右侍御呼曰：「賊至！」太祖驚起，求弓刀不獲，遂暴崩。

The next day, the palace gates were closed until midday. Shao decreed to summon the officials to the front of the west palace gate on the north side and establish [himself as emperor]. Shao from the door called the crowd of ministers and said:

"I have a father, and I also have an older brother, who do you desire to follow?"

The lords were all from the announcement startled and turned pale, and there was none who opposed. After a long time, the Duke of Nanping, Zhangsun [3] Song, said:

"I follow the prince."

明日，宮門至日中不開，紹稱詔召百僚於西宮端門前北面而立，紹從門扇間謂羣臣曰：「我有父，亦有兄，公卿欲從誰也？」王公已下皆驚愕失色，莫有對者。良久，南平公長孫嵩曰：「從王。」

The crowd of ministers knew that the emperor had died, yet did not examine the form of the death, and only the Duke of Yinping, Yuan [4] Lie, cried and left. Thereupon the imperial court was wild and vicious, and the people in their breasts changed their mind. The Marquis of Feiru He [5] Hu raised a beacon fire in the north of Anyang city, hence the Helan tribespeople all went there, and the other old tribes also led their brothers and sons to assemble their clansmen. Shao heard the people's emotions were uneasy, thus sent out cloth and silk and gave them to the lords, those in high positions received several hundred, those in low positions ten.

羣臣乃知宮車晏駕，而不審登遐之狀，唯陰平公元烈哭泣而去。於是朝野兇兇，人懷異志。肥如侯賀護舉烽於安陽城北，故賀蘭部人皆往赴之，其餘舊部亦率子弟招集族人，往往相聚。紹聞人情不安，乃出布帛班賜王公以下，上者數百匹，下者十匹。

Earlier, Taizong was outside [6], when he heard of the unrest he thus returned, hid in the mountains, sent people at night to tell the Marquis of Beixin An Tong, and the masses all responded. When Taizong arrived in the west of the city, the guard soldiers arrested and sent Shao.

先是，太宗在外，聞變乃還，潛于山中，使人夜告北新侯安同，眾皆響應。太宗至城西，衞士執送紹。

Hence the mother and son of Shao were bestowed death, and those subordinates, eunuchs and palace maids who acted as inside responders (which should refer to Tuoba Shao's inner circle of plotters) [7]. For those who had previously violated the chariot [8], the crowd of ministers in the southern streets of the capital cut them up alive [9] and ate them. Shao at this time was sixteen years old [10].

於是賜紹母子死，誅帳下閹官、宮人為內應者十數人，其先犯乘輿者，羣臣於城南都街生臠割而食之。紹時年十六。

Shao's mother was the younger sister of Empress Xianming [11] and was beautiful. At the beginning, when Taizu went to the Helan tribe, he saw her and was pleased, told Empress Xianming and asked to take her. The empress said:

"You should not. This surpassing beauty is not good. Moreover, she already has a husband."

Taizu secretly ordered people to kill her husband and took her. They begot Shao, and in the end he arrived at the great rebellion.

紹母即獻明皇后妹也，美而麗。初太祖如賀蘭部，見而悅之，告獻明后，請納焉，后曰：「不可，此過美不善，且已有夫。」太祖密令人殺其夫而納之，生紹，終致大逆焉。

Should be the Helan clan, as the Helan clan changed their name to He under the reforms of Emperor Xiaowen.

It was night when Tuoba Shao entered the palace, so the gates would have been closed. He violated a ban by climbing over them.

Should be Baba, as the Baba clan changed their clan name to Zhangsun under the reforms of Emperor Xiaowen.

Should be Tuoba, as the Tuoba imperial clan changed their clan name to Yuan under the reforms of Emperor Xiaowen.

Should again be Helan Hu.

Tuoba Si had earlier been forced to flee the capital in fear of Tuoba Gui after Tuoba Gui became angry at him.

I think that this should refer to the key assistants of Tuoba Shao in the rebellion, those behind Tuoba Gui's death.

This should be a reference to their roles in the death of Tuoba Gui.

I assume that these ministers were so angry at Tuoba Gui's death that they seized Tuoba Shao and the others before they could be properly executed/forced to commit suicide and cut them up alive. After doing so they would have been actually executed. Tuoba Si himself doesn't seem to have taken part in this.

By East Asian age reckoning; he was 14 or 15 years old by Western age reckoning.
