Among the many wonderful Chanukah books are those which have won awards not just in the Jewish community but as great books overall. Eric A. Kimmel's "Hershel and the Hanukkah Goblins" (1989) was a Caldecott Honor Book in 1990, and for good reason! In print for over a quarter of a century, this fantastic tale of magical creatures, bravery and cleverness is not for the faint of heart. But the humour and guile of the folk hero Hershel, coupled with the gorgeously magical illustrations of Trina Schart Hyman, are just the thing for fearless kids who love a story of defeating naughty monsters. A true classic holiday folktale with a fantasy twist! ⚫ ⚫ ⚫ #noodlenutsclassickidlit #jewishnoodlenuts #noodlenutschanukah #hershelandthehanukkahgoblins #erickimmel #ericakimmel #trinascharthyman #jewishfolklore #caldecotthonor #caldecotthonorbook #jewishkids #jewishparents #jewishmother #jewishmysticism #jewishchildren #hanukkah #chanukah #folktale #folklore #jewishculture https://www.instagram.com/p/B6jHSgDHTGg/?igshid=6qf8u2ylfub3

This One Summer by Jillian Tamaki and Mariko Tamaki
Since she was little, Rose and her parents have spent their summers at Awago Beach. She's always had fond memories of the place—its fresh air, its sandy beaches, its predictability—but this year just feels... different.
See, Rose is on the verge of adolescence. As she becomes increasingly interested in the lives of the older teenage townies for the very first time, the summer friendship she's always shared with Windy begins to strain. As she starts crushin' on Duncan, a teen who sells them Twizzlers and rents them R-rated horror films at the town's convenience store, she has to be careful not to get caught up in the drama that surrounds him. As she's navigating all of this newness, her parents, two people she's always looked up to and relied on, are fighting after a deeply personal loss. See, Rose is going through a lot.
Since she was little, Rose and her parents have spent their summers at Awago Beach. The memories she makes This One Summer are all about fresh air, sandy beaches, and the unpredictability of growing up.

@ronja.reads ALL THE WORLD written by Liz Garton Scanlon and illustrated by @marlafrazee This beautiful read-out-loud picture book was first published by @beachlanebooks in 2009 and we came across it when checking out the past Caldecott Honor books. With its rythmic language and rich atmospheric illustrations it's fast become a firm favourite in our house. Every month that Ronja grows she finds new points of interest in this book and familiar words married to pictures confirming her understanding of the world. And it is covering All The World... noises, places, people and feelings. We begun reading to Ronja soon after she was born and do several times a day. Now she's nearly eighteen months old she speaks around 300 words ( roughly counted) and it is books like this and the repetition of the familiar sounds and images that I credit so much with helping her along the way and getting her and us excited about playing with language and sounds. I do feel very thankful to these books that support our love of reading so well and with a peaceful, beautiful sentiment too. 🤍✨⛅️ . . . #alltheworld #lizgartonscanlon #marlafrazee #beachlanebooks #illustration #storybook #onourbookshelf #todayweread #childhood #poetry #childrensbook #picturebook #kidsbook #earlyreading #reading #ourworld #readingmatters #nursery #childrensbookillustration #explorepages #littleone #kids #kidlit #kidlitart #ronjareads #bookreview #kidreview #bookstagram #caldecotthonorbook https://www.instagram.com/p/CHTZ-93HEz6/?igshid=1qkn31ynx94fe

Meet R Gregory Christie. He’s one of the 13 brilliant illustrators of #thirteenwaysoflookingatablackboy by #tonymedina. He’s made many picture books, including the #caldecotthonorbook #freedomincongosquare. Here’s an image from his 2007 book called #TheChamp. He also owns a bookstore in Decatur, GA! We’re so thrilled he illustrated a poem for 13 Ways. #rgregorychristie #blackboyjoy #blackartistsmatter #pennycandybooks #smallpressbigconversations

There are classics and then there are CLASSICS. This account is focused entirely on older books that are special and wonderful, and will stand the test of time. But every once in a while you encounter a book or series so special that its longevity speaks for itself. "Anatole" (1956) by Eve Titus and Paul Galdone, is one of those. The first in a series of gorgeous picture books about Anatole the mouse, TWO of which became Caldecott Honor books, it tells of the mouse, his family in Paris, and his desire to change people's dim view of rodents like himself. "Anatole" is truly the epitome of everything wonderful about picture books, and a worthwhile addition to any child's bookshelf, over 60 years after its initial publication. ⚫ ⚫ #noodlenutsclassickidlit #noodlenutskidsbooks #anatole #evetitus #paulgaldone #mouse #mouseandcheese #parisfrance #mouseinparis #caldecotthonor #caldecotthonorbook #childhoodclassics #childhoodclassic #childhoodfavourites #childhoodfavorite #vintagekidsbooks #vintagepicturebookillustration #vintagepicturebook #vintagechildrensbook #goodbook #magicofchildhood #childrensliterature #bookcollector https://www.instagram.com/p/B4GCwROHM9S/?igshid=3nbdbro1e53q

Occasionally, already-popular books are worth continued promotion. There is so much to love about Matt de la Peña and Christian Robinson's "Last Stop on Market Street" (2015) that although many of you may be familiar with it, I felt compelled to share it here for those who aren't. 📚📙📗 A wonderful intergenerational story, "Last Stop" is an upbeat reminder that picture books can reflect the reality of our world without being sad. It reminds us that not everyone lives in a beautiful suburb, drives a car, has lots of money, and that that's just fine. The use of dialect reminds us that not everyone speaks the same way, but the story is clear that we all need to communicate with each other. Robinson's art brings the city to life with colour even in what is supposed to be a dingy neighbourhood. A lovely ode to urban life, and seeing the good in things. ⚫ ⚫ ⚫ #noodlenutskidsbooks #bookstagraminthe6ix #laststoponmarketstreet #laststop #marketstreet #mattdelapena #mattdelapeña #christianrobinson #newberyaward #newberymedal #caldecott #caldecotthonor #caldecotthonorbook #corettascottkingaward #corettascottkingillustratorhonor #notablechildrensbook #awardwinning #awardwinner #grandmother #grandson #intergenerationalstories #intergenerational #diversebooksforkids #weneeddiversebooks #sundaysout #afterchurch #blackkids #brownkids #representationmatters #diversitymatters https://www.instagram.com/p/B168ZaxHQCm/?igshid=bk7xovj8i2f7
