My son is always in playing with his Star Trek action figures and it’s usually the normal type of reenactment stuff but apparently Geordi is a Rabbi now and teaching the other characters how to keep kosher. I love this kid. Bonus dog playing with toy noises in the background too! #startrek #startrekthenextgeneration #tng #startrekactionfigures #judaism #jewishaf #jewishkids #kosherkid #improudtbh https://www.instagram.com/p/BtzP6DTglWz/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=3qbhg7i1atn0
If you're a fan of the classic "Caps For Sale", you're absolutely going to love "Yossi and the Monkeys: A Shavuot Story" (2017) by Jennifer Tzivia MacLeod, illustrated by Shirley Waisman, our final book for Shavuot, the Jewish holiday that starts tonight! Yossi, a caring husband and father, is very upset that he is too poor to provide his family the means to celebrate Shavuot with traditional foods, etc. His wife, a talented craftswoman, suggests that he sell some of the beautiful kippahs (skullcaps worn mostly by religiously observant Jewish men) that she makes to raise money for the family. But when Yossi runs into a mischievous monkey on his way to sell his wares, nothing goes exactly according to plan... A wonderfully playful holiday story! 🐒 🐒 🐒 #noodlenutsclassickidlit #yossiandthemonkey #AShavuotStory #JenniferTziviaMacLeod #ShirleyWaisman #JewishNoodlenuts #Shavuos #Shavuot #CapsForSale #JewishBooks #JewishKids #JewishFamily #HolidayBooks #Holiday #JewishHoliday #LearningAtHome #LearningCultures #inclusion #inclusionmatters #childrensbooks #EarlyLearning #TeacherIdeas https://www.instagram.com/p/CAyDFJTnYNR/?igshid=1xean9l0mb5ut

You all know how much I love sharing holidays, particularly the lesser known ones, and this Friday night we in the Jewish community will celebrate a particularly special one. Shavuot, which literally translates as "weeks", is one of the Three Pilgrimage Festivals mentioned in the Torah, along with Pesach (Passover) and Sukkot, which celebrate both agricultural and historical events. In the case of Shavuot, this event is deeply meaningful: the Jewish people receiving the Torah, the very foundation of our belief system, on Mount Sinai. For learning about the Jewish holidays, I love Allison Ofanansky's non-fiction picture books, with photos by Eliyahu Alpern. In this case, "Cheesecake For Shavuot" (2013) follows a class of Israeli children as they work in their school garden and kitchen to prepare for the holiday, including making some traditional dairy treats! A great intro to the holiday for any kid! Note: special thanks to the amazing @ashspeedteaches for the pictures! Check out her page for more information on the holiday. ♥️ 🥛 🥛 🥛 #NoodlenutsKidsBooks #CheesecakeForShavuot #AllisonOfanansky #EliyahuAlpern #MillbrookPress #PJLibrary #Shavuot #Shavuos #CountingTheOmer #JewishKids #JewishFamily #JewishMom #JewishBooks #JewishNoodlenuts #JewishHoliday #Blintzes #cheeseblintzes #HolidayBooks #LearningEveryDay #MulticulturalLearning #multicultural (at Mt Sinai) https://www.instagram.com/p/CAqgoxjHw_j/?igshid=154fuwmknulnd
My takeaway... the highest percentage of happy people are those engaged in a religious COMMUNITY, which they defined as monthly engagement . It’s not FEELING connected that works, it’s actively connecting.
For kids, the way to build a community connection is in two steps: 1. Attend a Jewish camp. 2. Attend regular local activities with friends from that camp, forming a meaningful community experience.
If only there were an organization like that. If only.
