Climb into a cozy superadobe #tinyhome bedroom! 😍 For a tour, see link in bio. ~ At a crazy uncertain time like this, our hearts go out to all struggling right now, especially the unhoused. It feels like an ideal time to embrace alternative housing and shelter, in its many forms like what @calearthinstitute has so thoroughly developed. 🌟 "There is a Sustainable Solution to Human Shelter, based on Timeless Materials (earth, water, air, and fire) and Timeless Principles (arches, vaults, and domes).“ -Nader Khalili, CalEarth founder ~ Shelters can be erected in mere hours with use of their “Duffel Bag Dome” system. Two duffel bags weighing less than 35lbs each, including all the tools and materials needed to build a 6 foot emergency shelter. To learn more about superadobe construction and for tours, watch our Cal Earth short documentary—link in bio. ✨ (at Cal-Earth Institute) https://www.instagram.com/p/B-C9LlABbFd/?igshid=9msebb4pp539

The Langbos Children’s Shelter! “In constructing the center, we utilized an alternative eco-building method called Superadobe as a way to involve the local Langbos community and make the most efficient use of our limited material resources in Langbos. Superadobe is a simple building method that uses local soil mixed with a small amount of cement to build beautiful and strong dome structures based on simple geometry and engineering principles. Superadobe integrates traditional earth architecture with contemporary global safety requirements and has been endorsed by the @UnitedNations as well as awarded the prestigious Aga Khan Award for Architecture (@akdn). Superadobe was developed by @CalEarthInstitute.
—
Using Superadobe allowed us to recruit and train an all-local team in Langbos to carry out this construction project. As a result, we were able to create jobs and skills training, provide daily nutritious meals to everyone involved, and connect with community members while giving them ownership of the project. Together, 30 Langbos residents came together for over 35,000 paid hours of collaborative work to build this unique structure. Special thanks to @ecodomesafrica for training our team and @jasonerlankarchitects for creating our design.” via @intsikelelo
