Druantia - Gallic tree goddess, guardian of trees and forests

Druantia is the Celtic tree goddess of trees. Her name is believed to be derived from the Celtic word for oak trees, ‘drus’ or ‘deru’. She is known as "Queen of the Druids (Ref)". She is a goddess of fertility for both plants & humans, ruling over sexual activities & passion. She also rules protection of trees, knowledge, creativity.

Described as a tall lady with thick, wheat-yellow hair, wearing a golden crown, a green silk dress and green cape with a golden brooch. Wherever she passes she leaves the fragrance of cut grass.

She is a triple goddess of fir trees. She is credited with creating the Celtic tree calendar, which divides the year into 13 months that correspond to the cycles of the moon. The Druids later associated this calendar with the Oghamic alphabet (Ref2), created by the god Ogma of the Tuatha and Danann, possessor of eloquence and artistic inspiration.

basic post for if you want to get into superformula

superformula is the top flight of motorsport in japan, home to the fastest single seaters after f1. it's been around since 1973, which is quite a while!

4 races of the season may have passed but it is not too late and since there is increased interest this year i thought people might want to know, so...

the format

there are 22 cars and 2 groups of qualifying, Q1A and Q1B. the top 6 of each group then go on to fight for pole in Q2. each session is 7 min long.

the polesitter gets 3 points, starting p2 gets you 2 points, starting p3 gets you 1 point. this makes qualifying more important than other series imo

the races are typically 40ish laps; over 250km. you are given 2 sets of tyre compounds and you need to use both during the race, which means everyone must pit at some point. expect strategies like an f2 feature race.

the race winner gets 20 points. p2 gets 15, p3 gets 11, p4 gets 8, p5 gets 6. p6 down to p10 gets 5 to 1 point.

the drivers

they are mostly japanese, clearly. the radio and bulk of the onsite interviews are in japanese, but english comms will translate so i think it's not a problem. also the interviewer switches languages at the drop of a hat she's insane (in a good way).

i'm going to introduce the names you might have heard of in other series. but shoutout to tomoki nojiri, the current reigning champion.

ok. if you're reading this chances are you've heard of liam lawson (#15) and his exploits in this series thus far. one of marko's twinks-in-waiting and arguably the most promising one rn. has had a decent amount of lore in his career for his age thanks to dtm. and twitch 💀 bffs with yuki tsunoda and appeared on dts bc of it

ryo hirakawa (#20), the beloved little brother in the toyota gazoo racing #8, won le mans and the wec wdc as a rookie. youngest ever super formula driver. has come close, but has never won the championship. which he should bc he's won super gt and japan f3 already and if he wins this it's the japanese triple crown. bffs with nick cassidy of fe championship leader fame (sorry i had to mention it somehow)

kamui kobayashi (#7), who is somehow driving and being his own team principal in wec (where he coincidentally also drives a toyota #7). was in f1, has multiple wec titles to his name. but no super formula title either. in fairness i doubt it was ever his main focus. still fun to have him around.

if you've followed f2 since like 2018? you'll recognise some names such as nirei fukuzumi #12 (cousin nirei if you follow albon_pets, also has been sf vice-champion), nobuharu matsushita #50 (the embodiment of that tomato girl aesthetic on tiktok), giuliano alesi #36 (son of the jean alesi), and cem bolukbasi #55 (most recent f2 to sf grad alongside liam)

Beltane

The point in mid-Spring that brings us closer to Summer is a special time of year! Everyone notices a change in energy levels and productivity during spring time. The natural world is urging us to enjoy our human bodies by dancing, running, playing and making love. It’s time to harness our potential to create.

Beltane, also known as May Day, is one of the four main festivals on the Wheel of the Year. The themes of Beltane are warmth, fertility, renewal and abundance. This holiday celebrates the abundance of Earth. We give thanks for all that we have and look forward to the bright, sunny days ahead.

During this time, the veil between the spirit realm is thin. The ability to interact with this realm is enhanced, so divination, spellwork and manifesting are particularly powerful. 

History

Traditionally, Beltane was celebrated in Scotland, Ireland and the Isle of Man in ancient Gaelic times. Falling on May 1st in the Northern Hemisphere, many cultures choose to hold celebrations on the last day of April through May 5th, depending on the day of the week and weather. Beltane means ‘Bel’s Fire’. It is named after the God Bel, an ancient Celtic Sun God. 

During this time of year, spring blooms are in blossom, the smell of grass is in the air, and critters are buzzing about. This is a time of celebrating fertility as well as sex! 

During Pagan times, before Christianity, sexuality was something to be celebrated. It meant fertility and abundance. Animals give birth, bird eggs hatch, flowers bloom, and sexuality enhances reproduction. Beltane is a celebration of life, and we cannot have life without sex! 

The decorating of trees and other common Beltane rituals are a little similar to Christmastime, it seems this is one holiday that Anglo-Saxon Christians deemed a little too Pagan to appropriate. It comes as no surprise since there are sexual themes surrounding this holiday. However, Roman Catholics observe May Day as a feast for the Blessed Virgin Mary. Statues of Mary are adorned with floral crowns. Often art is made and dedicated to the Virgin Mary throughout the month.

It’s at the height of Spring and toward the beginning of Summer. The Earth’s energy is strong and potent at this time, with new life blooming everywhere. Beltane is the start of the farming calendar. Sheppards begin to lead their livestock to the pastures. 

The origins are based around fertility, but this can be the fertility of the land or even your mind. Don’t be afraid to expand your horizons or be creative during this time. Make art or poetry or whatever tickles your fancy.

Fairies & the May Queen

It is said that fairies reawaken during Beltane. Since it’s known as May Day in some cultures, Beltane has a deep association with the May Queen. The May Queen was the Queen of the fae, known to some as the Earth Goddess, Flora, and to others as the Maiden and Mother aspects of the Triple Goddess.

Some believe that the legends of the May Queen have been used by Christians, as the Veneration of Mary occurs during the month of May. However, it could just be that the energy of this period is potent, which is why many religions and cultures venerate the young virgin or mother during May Day.

In modern May Day traditions, a symbolic May Queen is crowned among the young women of the village and adorned with flowers and wreaths.

To many practicing Pagans, Beltane tells the story of the May Queen and her unending conflict with the Queen of Winter. As they battle for supremacy, the May Queen triumphs in the Spring and yields to Sanhain, allowing the cycle to begin again.

If you practice with fae, you may want to consider leaving out an offering as part of your May Day tradition!

This holiday has deep ties to the fae. We can welcome them and show them warmth by creating a fairy garden in your garden or potted plants. Add miniature houses, furniture, trees and more to make a small garden-scape. If you don’t have or own plants, you can add a fairy door to a large tree on your property or along a nature trail.

Don’t invite fae into your home. They can be mischievous, so it’s best to use caution when working with or even approaching fae.

Celebrations and Traditions During Beltane

The Maypole

The Maypole was considered phallic, constructed with the intent of penetrating the Earth to represent potent Beltane blessings. At the top of the Maypole, a wreath of flowers would be placed to symbolize the fertility of the Goddess. The Maypole Dance would typically be performed by young men and women, holding different colored ribbons as they circle and interweave with each other around the pole. By the end of the dance, the spun ribbon would create a sheath around the Maypole that represents the womb of the Earth.

Historians believe that the first Maypole Dance originated as a Germanic Pagan fertility ritual. Maypole dances have been viewed as scandalous through the 18th and 19th centuries. They were even banned in 1644 by the British Parliament, described by Oliver Cromwell as, “a Heathenish vanity, generally abused to superstition and wickedness.”

Today, May Day revelers are free to practice anywhere they please. Though this is a classic May Day ritual that is often done in a secular way, it is also a longstanding Pagan tradition.

May Bush

May Bushes are small thorny trees, often a hawthorn or rowan tree, that would be decorated with brightly-colored flowers, ribbons, and decorations. May Bushes would be decorated and placed outside of family homes or in public gathering places to enjoy! Bringing home a decorated bush or branch from the May Bush would take its Beltane blessings with it. Farmers would know to place the May Bush outside of barns to bless their livestock with an abundance of milk for the summer.

This is an easy May Day tradition that is widely practiced across all cultures today.

Flowers & Flower Crowns

Many celebrate by creating a floral wreath, crown or bouquet to decorate homes and doorways. These can be made from the branches of May Bushes or other seasonal flowers to bring the Beltane blessing of warmth and fertility into the home. Flower crowns are easy to make and beautiful.

Place yellow flowers on your doorstep. Dandelions, daffodils, marigolds, and other sun-colored blooms can welcome blessings of warmth, sunshine and positivity into your home. Decorating your home in any way or altar with these can be great!

Bonfire

In Celtic times, they built a bonfire in the center of the village and had a huge feast. Young men and women would dance around the Maypole. People would marry in handfasting. Bonfires were seen as protective and purifying. People wishing to find love or conceive would jump over the Belfire for luck in love and fertility.

It’s traditional to build a fire on Beltane night to honor the Sun Gods. The fire recalls the glowing power of the Sun and cleanses the community from the dark days spent indoors. Why not light a fire in your backyard and invite some friends over? Energize each other’s plans and dreams by speaking of them! Take turns leaping over the fire, with caution of course.

If you can’t make a bonfire, lighting candles in your home to welcome the Sun is also a great way to celebrate.

Handfasting

Beltane is a wonderful time for weddings. Handfasting was practiced in pre-Christian times in the British Isles. Two hands are tied together to signify a bond being made. It’s where the term ‘Tying the Knot’ came from. In ancient times, these rituals made a bond.

The handfasting ceremony is one that many choose in the palace of traditional weddings. This bonding ritual has been adopted by modern-day pagans, witches, wiccans, atheists and members of the LGBTQ+ community that may not identify with the ideas of a traditional marriage ceremony. Beltane speaks to all things new beginnings and is a wonderful, energetic time to host a wedding or commitment ceremony!

Sexuality

Beltane celebrates creation and connection as an essential component of being alive on this amazing planet. Beltane ecompasses the lushness of spring, sex, pleasure, and picking plants from your hair after a romp with your lover under the warm spring sun. This holiday is about celebrating sexuality on many levels. Love and sex bring us some of our most profound experiences. 

This is a sexy holiday, but it’s not always inclusive to all members of the LGBTQ+ community. Its origins are about one type of sex between a certain type of couple. Celebrating fertility also suggests that the purpose of springtime lust is just for fertility, when this just doesn’t resonate with everyone. We can’t change the origins, but we can progress to make this celebrating more inclusive. Aside from a science lesson, sex can be a way to bond on an emotional level. It’s a magical process where we truly open up to each other. Celebrating sex instead of shaming is great, but it’s also important to remember that not everyone has sex for fun either. Lust for life, passions and excitement can also be a great way to celebrate this holiday. Fertility does not have to be literal.

Gardening

As a spring celebration, get your garden ready! Plant seedlings. Ask for blessings from your fertility god of choice to ensure a bountiful harvest, or just a really pretty flower! Dedicate your garden plot in your deity’s honor. While you’re enjoying the fresh spring air and the earthy texture of the soil, take the time to ground yourself. Make sure you water your seedlings.

May Water

Rolling in May Eve dew or washing your face in pre-dawn May Day dew brings health, luck and beauty. Getting your hair wet with Beltane rain blesses the head. Collect sacred waters or scry in sacred springs, wells, or ponds. Bless springs, ponds and other waters with flowers, garland and ribbons. Just don’t leave the non-natural materials out in nature for too long.

Witchcraft & Baking

If you are a practicing witch, during this time, fertility rituals, love spells, and sex magic are especially effective. Divination is strong too.

Kitchen witchery is another wonderful way to use the powers of Beltane to enhance your spell work. Bake something with aphrodisiacs like fig tart or pie with asparagus and garlic! Beltane Bread is a well-known tradition and you can get the recipe here.

Decoration & Symbolism

Symbols for Beltane include the sun, flowers, and anything related to abundance and fertility. Rituals and traditions often incorporate these symbols which represent radiance, joy and positivity. You can decorate your altar and home with some of these symbols and offerings:

Honey, milk, wine, oats, and fruits are common offerings for this time. This may vary depending on your personal practices.

Decorations: floral wreaths, antlers, acorns and seeds, phallic or yoni symbols or statues, chalices, swords, candles, ribbons 

Colors: green, white, yellow, pink, red, blue, silver

Crystals: carnelian, rose quartz, beryl, emerald, garnet, malachite, amber

Plants: yarrow, mugwort, hawthorn, rowan

Foods: pomegranates, peaches, cherries, honey, milk, wine, oats

While these are the most common symbols, you can use anything that reminds you of spring, life, fire, and renewal.

Tying It All Up with a Ribbon

If you practice ancestor work, you might want to find out what Beltane rituals your ancestors could have followed.

Many Pagans may host a May Day garden party during the day that transitions into a Beltane fire festival at night.

Hopefully this gives you some ideas about Beltane. Its meaning is multi-layered but is always accessible to us everyday people. Really, it’s a celebration of the seasons! If nothing else, reconnect with nature and renew yourself. Whatever you intend to bring to the fertile energy of Beltane, you’ll find connecting to nature’s wild and free energy enhances all your endeavors.

While all Pagan festivals should be celebrated in a way that feels right for you, understanding the foundations can be important to understand the symbolism and original purpose. Many traditions are popular today, but you can come up with your own rituals and incorporate Beltane in your own way!

he bakes a lot, and is very good at decorating cupcakes and cakes. he likes to bake pies. everything he makes in excess is given to his neighbours, or to passers-by, or to local orphanages and shelters.

his two cats: vienna (the tortoiseshell) and antoinette (a black cat). both of them are rescue cats. 

you’ll see him biking around with a cat backpack on sometimes. if you wave, he’ll ring the little bike bell and smile !!

he likes to listen to music in the open, not through headphones. so he usually only plays it freely in his home. he loves music up to the early 2010s. after that it is a void.

in his teens: 

kit stayed mainly within ulstead, finishing all his relevant studies. 

not really a party animal, not many close friends, was known as a very polite kid but kind of quiet and kept to himself

literally the one who like stays at home doing homework for the next school year.

smartest kid in school, valedictorian, all of that. started learning languages at this time, president of the academic decathlon, hehe

in his twenties:

kit studied his undergraduate degree in arts, while also commencing more rigorous royal studies to complement his duties. 

he also began training with the royal army and navy

it’s within this decade that his mother dies.

in his 20s-30s:

kit began to want more from life. always prepared, and very self-aware, he knew that in order to be the king/brother/son that his family needed, then he needed to make sure he was okay. 

his late 20s/early 30s was a time of self-reflection and soul-searching. he started to travel alongside his royal duties, learning as much as he could of the world and ‘living’ as much as he could before he stayed permanently within ulstead’s borders.

his travels took him all over the world, but he would not have stayed for more than 2 weeks somewhere before he came back to ulstead. 

he knew his father was preparing to pass the crown to him soon, and he wanted to be ready. 

marriage ???? no !!!

he finished his travels around age 34. but just because he stopped travelling, it didn’t mean he stopped learning. this man is the literal definition of ‘lifelong learning’. much to his father’s chagrin, he was still balancing time between princely duties and his personal passions. but no one could say that the royal court ever suffered, because kit was always on time and did his homework, providing substantial discussion etc.

he got along really well with his father, until it came to the marriage thing. 

he had to marry ??? what why ??? so that someone could take care of him ??? not right now ://

but then ella ....

you know the story. the beautiful maiden in the gorgeous dress, attending the royal ball in ulstead. no one knows who she is, but look! she’s caught the crown prince’s eye. who was she!

heart-eyes. heart-eyes EVERYWHERE.

he’s not sure he fell in love, but he had never been more ready to fall in love than at that moment. he would have leapt into love for her.

BUT THEN MALEFICENT #$%^$

she knows what she did !!!! >:(((

now the charmonts are in elias. 

kit was the last one to leave ulstead. he understood the need to protect his brothers, but he couldn’t fathom why his father wanted him to escape too. who would be left to protect their kingdom? who would be the one to come up with a plan? his father’s aging advisors? that snivelly Grand Duke??

and by last to leave, i mean he left a few days after his brothers. he fought tooth and nail with his father that he should stay. tried every trick in the book. but eventually, he surrendered to his father’s desperation.

he’s been at elias now for at least a 1.5 years. he was there for the big battle with hades and maleficent (let’s just say he played a super small role and didn’t do much other than general fighting).

he lives in an apartment all by himself. and two cats: vienna & antoinette. they have lil cat backpacks.

he has no horse :(( he has a car here, but mainly rides his bike around elias. 

he spends his days doing a ‘work from home’ situation, still attending royal meetings and fulfilling his duties. things have recently become more difficult due to his father’s exhausted state. it’s hard to be semi-king of your kingdom when you’re an ocean away.

other things he does in elias:

volunteers time with different organisations, such as orphanages, homeless shelters, and fundraising events

he started the ‘chatty cafe’ in the community centre. on tuesday and thursday afternoons, you get to just sit and chat about anything, and there’s free coffee, tea, and snacks. kit is always there, without fail, to chat to anyone who needs it.

bit of a good samaritan around elias, just known for doing nice things like helping someone with their groceries, paying for the items of the people in the queue, getting a cat out of a tree hehe

[ MENTAL STATE ]

kit has always done very well with like self care and all that. 

but being stuck in elias makes him restless. he’s not sure if he wants to make a life here. he’s got his cats, he’s got his hobbies, but it feels like the longest business trip in the world. and the worst part is, he’s not meant to act like a prince here.

they’re meant to be ‘in hiding’ technically, so he introduces himself as only ‘kit’. and it comes with its perks — he has to admit it’s a little freeing to now have that time he used to crave. the time to just be whoever he wanted to be. only it came a decade too late because he literally just got into the rhythm of being an almost-king in ulstead, and now he has to be .... HIDING ????

being in hiding from a witch, being kept away from his beloved home country .... this was NOT in his ten-year plan.

he’s so proud of being a prince, he loves his kingdom so much. WHY CAN’T HE JUST GO HOME !!!!!

on the family front: he and florian are tense atm (have been for a few years now), and ... kit doesn’t know how to fix it :((

he wants to learn more about magic, or at least request the help and assistance of magic-users who could know something to combat/defend against maleficent

neighbours : want some free food ? need some pet-sitting done ? nervous to talk to the land-lord and need some help ? kit is your guy. his apartment building is a bit ‘posh’ and on the rich side. 

chatty cafe : as explained above, the chatty cafe is a thing he started in the community centre. every tuesday and thursday afternoon he and other volunteers sit down and chat with anyone who needs it; there’s free tea, coffee, and snacks.

stranger in need, is a friend indeed : kit doesn’t shy away from asking if someone needs assistance. there’s very little he can’t do. study help? yes. language help? yes. assistance with navigating forms and paperwork? YES. 

did someone say ... prince charming ? : similar to the above but more the ‘damsel in distress’ route hehe. here is literally prince charming. can end up hilarious, serious, dramatic, sad, you name it. not necessarily romantic. ( any gender !!! :3 )

you’ve got a friend in me : kit has never had ... uhh ... friends. the closest people to him are his brothers, and the captain of ulstead. he needs people that he interacts with as just himself, not as someone helping out or doing something. people he can chill with — and honestly, they need to make him chill.

i personally do not see the reason why they would remove monaco off the calendar when there are many newly added races that bring nothing to the sport. meanwhile monaco is part of the triple crown, has the history and holds the glamour of the sport. if some of these decisions were affected because of f1 not wanting it on the calendar i hope they all fuck off. monaco deserves it's place on the calendar no matter how many boring races we've had here. i'd rather watch a boring race in monaco than at whatever track that was added in the last past 5 years.

Archie Sonic Timeline

Just for my own personal reference and for those who might need it for fanfiction I’m going to try to make a more detailed timeline that keeps even minor events in order.

For simplicity sake I’m using Sonic’s birthday as a year end marker. I’m also going under the assumption that the Mobian calendar is different from our own.

All flashbacks and flashforwards will be placed within the timeline as they are revealed/told not when the events in them happen.

Yes most of the gag strips will be included as some of them are referenced later in actual stories. Consider them as the Mobius equivalent of Vlogs. The only thing left out are pin-ups, activity pages, and advertisements for the comic.

Last Chinese Emperor's Watch Sells for $6.2 Million

An auction house in Hong Kong sold several items on Tuesday that belonged to Aisin-Giyoro Puyi, the last emperor of China, who was dethroned in 1912. The items included a Swiss-made luxury watch, which went for $6.2 million.

The watch was a Patek Philippe Reference 96 Quantieme Lune, one of just eight known to exist. The unknown collector who purchased it did so at nearly twice the price it was expected to net, setting a record for the make of watch and for timepieces previously owned by emperors.

The ultra-rare timepiece was made in Geneva in 1937 and has a Bauhaus-inspired platinum case that houses a silvered dial, with a rose-gold chapter ring and enamel hour markers. It also has an indicator for phases of the moon and a triple-date calendar - features just as rare in 1930s watches as the watch itself.

"I was delighted because after more than 3 years of hard work on researching, we found all the missing pieces of this beautiful puzzle," said Thomas Perazzi, Phillips’ head of watches for Asia. "This result brings Hong Kong to a new level as really a hub for fine watches and extremely important, collectible timepieces."

It’s not known how Puyi acquired the watch, which he gave to his Russian interpreter, Georgy Permyakov, while in a Soviet prison after World War II. Puyi was arrested by Soviet forces during the final weeks of the war, as the Red Army launched its invasion of Japanese-held territories in China and Korea. Puyi had ignominiously served as the Japanese Empire’s ruler of Manchukuo, the puppet state established in Manchuria after it seized the region from China in 1931.

Puyi was just two years old when he ascended to the Dragon Throne in 1908 at the urging of the late Empress Dowager Cixi, who died days before his crowning as the Xuantong Emperor. Just four years later, Puyi was forced to abdicate the throne by a swelling revolutionary movement, which declared a Republic of China in February 1912, ending 2,132 years of imperial rule. However, he continued to live in the palace complex and was briefly reinstalled as emperor as warring factions vied for power.

In 1932, he successfully courted the Japanese Empire, which allowed him to become its puppet ruler in Manchukuo, taking on the name Kangde. However, he was almost totally a figurehead, signing proclamations issued to him by Tokyo.

Following his arrest by the Soviets in 1945, Puyi was imprisoned and tried for war crimes at the Tokyo Trials, but escaped execution and was instead sentenced to ten years in prison and to be politically reeducated. In 1950, he was extradited to the newly-founded People’s Republic of China, which had succeeded at reuniting all of China except for Taiwan under a socialist republic. He was released in 1959 a deeply changed man, expressing regret for his time as an emperor. Puyi joined the Communist Party of China and even served as a representative in the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and the National People's Congress before dying in 1967.

Other items sold at the auction also belonging to Puyi include a manuscript notebook, a leather-bound edition of Confuscius' "Analects," which together sold for $121,634 - almost five times the pre-sale estimate - and an inscribed red paper fan given to Permyakov in Tokyo, which sold for $77,846 - six times the pre-sale estimate.

2023 Spartan Race Elite Series begins with Vermosa kick-off this February

Sweat, swagger, and spirit converge once more as the country’s best obstacle athletes vie for race supremacy to banner this year’s Spartan Elite Series opener at the sprawling suburban city-estate of Vermosa in Imus, Cavite from February 17 to 18.

The Battle of Vermosa features the inaugural 3K Elite Series on Day 1, triggering a gruelling yet glorifying test of physical power and mental toughness akin to the fabled Spartan warrior ethos of ancient Greece. Ninety (45 men and 45 women) Elite Athletes from all over Asia Pacific are expected to slug it out at Vermosa. They were invited based on their ranking and strong finish from previous Spartan races. Also in the roster are top athletes from universities and uniformed personnel, members of the national team which secured golds in the 2019 Southeast Asian Games, the last time obstacle course racing was included in the biennial meet. Among the top racers invited are Guinness Book

The Southern Terminus has changed a lot since I first visited in 2013 (its orientation, the now-different border wall, the fence next to the terminus that's not the border fence, the network of dirt roads, and the monument itself), but the excitement felt at the end (or the start) of a thru-hike is still the same. Maybe one day I'll depart from (or arrive at?) this monument on foot again. But probably not. Too many other trails to hike, ride, raft, ski, climb, and/or stumble down.
