Adventure Hiking Trail

Part 2/3 of the Indiana Triple Crown, 26 miles and nearing 6 hours ❣️

~900 calories and ~80 oz water (some with calories) consumed, with a salt tab each hour proved run altering

I fall more in love with this trail every time, but what trail is that not true for? The rock features and various waterways the trail runs above stand out as the leaves drop and this was an ideal time to run it, aside from creeks being dry (bring a filter or stash some).

I had done some longer runs on the AHT over the years, but don’t think I had completed it in its entirety since my friend Laura and I put our names on the FKT lead board 🤘🏻 Another hidden gem of Indiana that offers anything but flat terrain, nearing 5,000 feet of elevation.

The 8 mile section between Cold Friday and Old Forest Road feels like a wilderness and I did filter a few ounces of water into a handheld with a squeezy LIfe Straw bag filter, just in case but think I barely ending up drinking from it, still having some in my bladder. It was a great day to be outside, practicing my craft, traveling along cliffs and chilled by the shadows in the ravines as it was getting close to dusk. I felt alive and capable.

Am wondering how leo could help in bakery, wasn't he hiding from guards? Or when he's helping in bakery he was wearing his cloak?

Heyya! So as for how Leo didn't get discovered by the guards, he was wearing his cloak the whole time! I should've specified it a bit more, but the thought slipped my mind ahaha

Because the first half of the chapter took place before the store opened, he's free to roam around without fear of being seen since it's just them in the kitchen :) But after the bustle starts, he puts it on!

So over here's a bit more stated, but i thought it'd be absolutely hilarious if he fell over with the amount of confidence he usually exudes :)))

As for how much money he owes Y/n, it's safe to say that it'd definitely in the triple digits, since prices are usually hiked up a bit during festivals and the like (especially for such a momentous one as well!) I'm trying to research more about currencies, such as crowns etc so the total amount might be defined in later chapters!

When I was in high school I was obsessed with mushing (sled dog racing). I followed the Iditarod and the Yukon quest and subscribed to Mushing magazine. I imagine the folks running the small press that published the magazine were mildly confused about the one random subscriber they got from Texas.

I distinctly remember declaring as a freshman in high school to my parents I wanted to win the red lantern in the Iditarod.

I now work with (retired) racing dogs, but greyhounds, rather than sled dogs, and am very happy with it.

While I would still love to race in the Iditarod, I have since decided a much more reasonable goal is to hike th triple crown.

Codgers and Geezers

In 2023 two fellows from Georgia hiking the PCT became You Tube sensations. David “Rumbles” Good and Joe “No Filter” Cook, known collectively as the Codgers hiked the PCT. These two guys are definitely not twenty or thirty somethings. They are two experienced hikers who previously completed the AT and decided to take on the PCT. Rumbles and No Filter, 62 and 66, were in the minority of 2023 PCT thru-hikers attempting to head straight north through the snow-covered Sierra and beyond. Many decided to leap frog these snowy parts and come back later.

I have not watched every one of their many videos but enough to build an impression. These two fellows appear sensible in their decision making. For example, determined to not take any unnecessary chances traversing sketchy snow covered trails or crushing miles to crush miles. Even going through the Sierras they did so with caution and a no hesitation to turn around or skip over a tough/unsafe part. They are determined for sure, while appreciating their surroundings and each other. How they revel in a sunrise was something I found very easy to relate to.

Rumbles has an easy voice to listen to. At times while watching and listening to their videos Rumbles has reminded me of Bob Ross the easy speaking TV painting teacher from some years ago. No Filter adds a nice compliment to the overall commentary. These two men are clearly good friends and have spent good times together.

This all leads me to thinking about my own PCT experiences hiking with my companions Rees and Jim or as we affectionately refer to ourselves as 'Team Geezer'. We weren't always 'Team Geezer'. When we began hiking together we were in our twenties. We walked most of Washington's PCT in one stretch solidifying our desire to do more together. Most recently one of us reached their seventh decade and two of us are not far behind. Most importantly we are still hiking together. We just completed a little over 70 miles on the Colorado Trail.

That recent hike was a notable reminder of our shared history. It also points to the joy that we feel in each others company, not to mention the wealth of experiences we have shared over the years. We have shared tents, food, and many laughs as well as deep conversations. Another factor in all of these years of walking together is a mutual determination to continue making these times together happen for as long as we are able.

As I watch and listen to the Codgers I can relate easily. I would love to meet them as I am sure we would much in common beyond walking the PCT. It seems that the National Scenic Trail experience, i.e. the Triple Crown, or any of the other notable trails to hike in the United States can easily be assumed to be a young persons game. These two hikers and my partners and I aim to affirm that is not a 100% given. In fact there are many more middle to later aged people hiking sections or as thru hikers every year. That suggests that how Team Geezer sees itself is not to dissimilar from a bunch of other folks who have found their way to the same place.

I commend the Codgers for their achievement. I also appreciate the way they gently remind anyone who watches and listens to their stories unfold on You Tube that there is so much more to experiencing the PCT than simply making it an extreme sport. That may sound like a bitter older person's comment but honestly that is an opinion that I have held from my earliest hiking experiences. Essentially it is not the trip it is the journey. It is the journey of walking and the journey of friendship that go hand in hand and linger far longer than one might imagine.

he bakes a lot, and is very good at decorating cupcakes and cakes. he likes to bake pies. everything he makes in excess is given to his neighbours, or to passers-by, or to local orphanages and shelters.

his two cats: vienna (the tortoiseshell) and antoinette (a black cat). both of them are rescue cats. 

you’ll see him biking around with a cat backpack on sometimes. if you wave, he’ll ring the little bike bell and smile !!

in his teens: 

kit stayed mainly within ulstead, finishing all his relevant studies. 

not really a party animal, not many close friends, was known as a very polite kid but kind of quiet and kept to himself

literally the one who like stays at home doing homework for the next school year.

smartest kid in school, valedictorian, all of that. started learning languages at this time, president of the academic decathlon, hehe

in his twenties:

kit studied his undergraduate degree in arts, while also commencing more rigorous royal studies to complement his duties. 

he also began training with the royal army and navy

it’s within this decade that his mother dies.

in his 20s-30s:

kit began to want more from life. always prepared, and very self-aware, he knew that in order to be the king/brother/son that his family needed, then he needed to make sure he was okay. 

his late 20s/early 30s was a time of self-reflection and soul-searching. he started to travel alongside his royal duties, learning as much as he could of the world and ‘living’ as much as he could before he stayed permanently within ulstead’s borders.

his travels took him all over the world, but he would not have stayed for more than 2 weeks somewhere before he came back to ulstead. 

he knew his father was preparing to pass the crown to him soon, and he wanted to be ready. 

marriage ???? no !!!

he finished his travels around age 34. but just because he stopped travelling, it didn’t mean he stopped learning. this man is the literal definition of ‘lifelong learning’. much to his father’s chagrin, he was still balancing time between princely duties and his personal passions. but no one could say that the royal court ever suffered, because kit was always on time and did his homework, providing substantial discussion etc.

he got along really well with his father, until it came to the marriage thing. 

he had to marry ??? what why ??? so that someone could take care of him ??? not right now ://

but then ella ....

you know the story. the beautiful maiden in the gorgeous dress, attending the royal ball in ulstead. no one knows who she is, but look! she’s caught the crown prince’s eye. who was she!

heart-eyes. heart-eyes EVERYWHERE.

he’s not sure he fell in love, but he had never been more ready to fall in love than at that moment. he would have leapt into love for her.

BUT THEN MALEFICENT #$%^$

now the charmonts are in elias. 

kit was the last one to leave ulstead. he understood the need to protect his brothers, but he couldn’t fathom why his father wanted him to escape too. who would be left to protect their kingdom? who would be the one to come up with a plan? his father’s aging advisors? that snivelly Grand Duke??

and by last to leave, i mean he left a few days after his brothers. he fought tooth and nail with his father that he should stay. tried every trick in the book. but eventually, he surrendered to his father’s desperation.

he’s been at elias now for at least a 1.5 years. he was there for the big battle with hades and maleficent (let’s just say he played a super small role and didn’t do much other than general fighting).

he lives in an apartment all by himself. and two cats: vienna & antoinette. they have lil cat backpacks.

he has no horse :(( he has a car here, but mainly rides his bike around elias. 

he spends his days doing a ‘work from home’ situation, still attending royal meetings and fulfilling his duties. things have recently become more difficult due to his father’s exhausted state. it’s hard to be semi-king of your kingdom when you’re an ocean away.

other things he does in elias:

volunteers time with different organisations, such as orphanages, homeless shelters, and fundraising events

he started the ‘chatty cafe’ in the community centre. on tuesday and thursday afternoons, you get to just sit and chat about anything, and there’s free coffee, tea, and snacks. kit is always there, without fail, to chat to anyone who needs it.

bit of a good samaritan around elias, just known for doing nice things like helping someone with their groceries, paying for the items of the people in the queue, getting a cat out of a tree hehe

[ MENTAL STATE ]

kit has always done very well with like self care and all that. 

but being stuck in elias makes him restless. he’s not sure if he wants to make a life here. he’s got his cats, he’s got his hobbies, but it feels like the longest business trip in the world. and the worst part is, he’s not meant to act like a prince here.

they’re meant to be ‘in hiding’ technically, so he introduces himself as only ‘kit’. and it comes with its perks — he has to admit it’s a little freeing to now have that time he used to crave. the time to just be whoever he wanted to be. only it came a decade too late because he literally just got into the rhythm of being an almost-king in ulstead, and now he has to be .... HIDING ????

being in hiding from a witch, being kept away from his beloved home country .... this was NOT in his ten-year plan.

he’s so proud of being a prince, he loves his kingdom so much. WHY CAN’T HE JUST GO HOME !!!!!

on the family front: he and florian are tense atm (have been for a few years now), and ... kit doesn’t know how to fix it :((

he wants to learn more about magic, or at least request the help and assistance of magic-users who could know something to combat/defend against maleficent

neighbours : want some free food ? need some pet-sitting done ? nervous to talk to the land-lord and need some help ? kit is your guy. his apartment building is a bit ‘posh’ and on the rich side. 

chatty cafe : as explained above, the chatty cafe is a thing he started in the community centre. every tuesday and thursday afternoon he and other volunteers sit down and chat with anyone who needs it; there’s free tea, coffee, and snacks.

stranger in need, is a friend indeed : kit doesn’t shy away from asking if someone needs assistance. there’s very little he can’t do. study help? yes. language help? yes. assistance with navigating forms and paperwork? YES. 

did someone say ... prince charming ? : similar to the above but more the ‘damsel in distress’ route hehe. here is literally prince charming. can end up hilarious, serious, dramatic, sad, you name it. not necessarily romantic. ( any gender !!! :3 )

you’ve got a friend in me : kit has never had ... uhh ... friends. the closest people to him are his brothers, and the captain of ulstead. he needs people that he interacts with as just himself, not as someone helping out or doing something. people he can chill with — and honestly, they need to make him chill.

IMO he’s a survivalist/bushcrafter, but also like…he’s actually really knowledgeable about surviving in the outdoors BUT has difficulty understanding that this is not necessarily the experience that people want when it comes to camping.

Like, Bruce: given the abundance of natural resources at this time of year we will be foraging for our meals.

How would Ed take it, knowing that all Programs are living? That the ones he made are in the ENCOM System right now, living out lives of their own, interacting with Programs made by every Programmer in ENCOM, who are living their lives just the same?

I've had some threads where he's ended up in the digital world... I can't remember which thread, but in one of them his reaction was:

probably have an existential crisis, give up programming, then have his mid-life crisis early and go hike the triple crown while he tried to figure out what to do with his life.

...Or something like that. He was having a rough time in whichever thread that was, and was being kinda sarcastic, though.

But given his reaction to both @systemadministratorclu's Clu and @occupationallyhazardous's Ouran was this is my son, now, probably something along that line, but probably closer to his reaction to Ouran (who is one of his father's programs, and looks like Dillinger Sr. did as a toddler) in that there is a can of worms because of the fact that they look exactly like him.

ideal pizza toppings: Olives. olives all the way. uhm. i do enjoy a bit of meat on my pizza but i don't care about the type. mushrooms are good too <3, and artichoke hearts. and then occasionally i'll dip it in ranch and then in parmesan cheese but i don't do that as often as i used to.

dream vacation: Ough. there is like one country i really really want to visit and that is the philippines. really need to figure out how to contact my aunt so she can give me the whole tour. also i gotta visit yellowstone my childhood self was absolutely obsessed with that place. and then less of a vacation but i really want to be a triple crown hiker (hike the entirety of the pacific crest, the continental divide, and the appalachian trails)

favorite scent: in the desert right after a rainstorm, when the sun's returned and the sagebrush and creosote hangs heavy in the air, so strong you feel like you'll smell like it forever.
