─◇─◇ welcome to ... the HOUSE OF DE VIL (description & roles)
It’s taken over three months, but the House of de Vil’s new headquarters is ready. Standing on the corner within the central business district of Elias, it acts as both office and boutique for the renowned fashion company. A four-storey building, its wide windows showcase mannequins wearing a mix of de Vil’s classic designs, and new pieces.
The building itself is L-shaped, and was an old commercial building with an attached courtyard behind wrought-iron gates. In its renovation and reconstruction, Cruella had the builders rip off those gates, though the surrounding fence still remains, and opened the courtyard for use by the employees of the House and for the public to use as a sort of sitting garden. There is an art installation and a water fountain in the courtyard. The building has an inspired Haussmann style facade.

There are lots of openings for employment at the House, including within the boutique, the atelier (workshop), the administration, publishing (a branch of admin), and the operations team of the building. Everyone is paid very well (hon hon hon).
If you work for the House of de Vil, it is expected that it is the only place you work at, in the position you're in (eg. if you are a seamstress here, you cannot be anywhere else, but you could be a waitress).
Above all, the House is your priority.

Full Moon Ball 2023: KIT CHARMONT ♛・*˚
his royal highness, prince kit, wears head-to-toe dolce & gabbana. a silk skirt with a matching silken neck scarr. grey trousers with a nailshead pattern. he wears velvet shoes. the pièce de résistance is a cape with intricate embroidery, inspired by neoclassic paintings of food.

thoughts : kit saw the fruit bowl cape and said “i must have that”. but no, really, since the dawn of time, kit has had to wear formalwear as dictated by the grand duke and what’s expected of a prince. usually just his ulstead military uniform, or a prince’s formal suit. this time, upon hearing of the ball, the grand duke (as usual) sent his recommendations to prince kit as “the crown prince not only represents himself at a ball, but also ulstead”. it seemed even in ‘hiding’, kit still had to follow the rules. 
but no more. this time, he wanted something fun, something breathable — something as light and comfortable as he felt nowadays. hence, the fruit bowl cape <3
he will be spinning his cape around sometimes, because he could never do that with coat tails.

Originally a ‘prototype’ for Juliet’s dress, Serena was convinced to wear this to the Halloween Bash by her new friend Brynne. She’s never been one to enjoy dressing up in Halloween, and since this is Orion’s thing she’s not exactly excited, but she does love an occasion to wear something different.

( OOC: This is the extended, much more detailed version of Meg’s history and her starting point hehe. Beware if you read below the cut !! )
To begin with, Meg is basically this meme.
Meg listens to Carly Rae Jepsen, mxmtoon, and Taylor Swift. E•MO•TION is her favourite album. It’s pretty spectacular what a pair of earphones and ‘Runaway With Me’ by Carly Rae Jepsen can do for your psyche when you’re stuck in the Underworld. Though if you ask her she’ll just shrug and tell you she’s listening to nothing.
She started cooking meals, old recipes from her mother’s family, and sharing them with the shelters, but if you mention you saw her volunteering she’ll say it was someone else.
Her mother sent her a box of her father’s old belongings, which included her dad’s digital camera, and though she had half a mind to drop it from a high building — once she got there, she found that there was a good view to capture. Now she brings it everywhere with her. But she will act like it’s nothing if you point it out.
And for someone who’s been burned a lot by love, there’s still a part of her that can’t help but yearn for it. And with that remaining nugget of love, there’s also hope. Hope that there’s more to life than whatever the fuck just happened with a bunch of Greek gods and a city full of self-proclaimed heroes.
Meg doesn’t ever want people to know that she’s trying. She feels that once people know, they’ll be able to use it against her somehow. And she is so tired of being blackmailed and conned and used ( rip she still will be tho bc hades and the contract and maleficent out here rip ). She’s never had steady ground beneath her feet, even in the Underworld — everything was always cracking or shaking, threatening to trip her over or, at the worst, swallow her whole. No wonder she’s gotten even more flighty now that Hades is gone and Hercules is AWOL … off being a god somewhere. Apathy became her favourite coat to wear, and after everything that happened, she’s now more insistent on living by that code.
A few words stuck out to me from her bio :3

> RELIABLE ( the past )
nothing was ever reliable, not her family, not her home. when meg was 5, her family moved from california to greece, at the promise of a distant relative. after struggling financially in america, they migrated to athens with the belief that there was an apartment waiting for them and jobs. and yes, they did have a new place and they did have new jobs —  but her family struggled to adjust. her parents became unhappy, tied now to their distant cousin and unable to leave. they began to neglect each other, and their daughter.
from growing up with such a big family and so much love, to being alone in a new city while watching her parents’ marriage fall apart was … devastating.
from an early age, meg had to adjust to a new culture, a new city, and the changing dynamics of her family. by the time she was 14, she’d given up hope entirely on her family and started hanging around the city well after dark —  only coming home for food, storing her stuff, and sleep.
the boy she fell in love with and died? his name was aegeus. they were both 17 and madly in love. they swore to elope and runaway with each other, even got matching tattoos, but he died in a car accident a year after they met.
heartbroken and depressed, she heard of old stories of a place in the city where you could commune with the god of the underworld and sell your soul in place of another. while meg wanted nothing more than to be with aegeus, having him live instead of her was a better deal than him not living at all. hades heard her prayers and agreed to the deal.
she died. waking up in the underworld, she figured that she could find a way out and go to aegeus again — but when hades showed her a vision of the upper world, meg saw aegeus holding another woman in his arms as they slept, in the bed she had once been so familiar with. horrified and heartbroken all over again, she swore to never give her heart to someone again. whatever remained of her heart hardened and became cold.
but she did not want to die again. not just yet.
hades offered a new deal : he would keep her soul as payment, but she would be allowed to roam the world again, doing his bidding until she had worked off her debt.
and meg, having no other hope (after losing what little hope she had in the first place), agreed.
so ... the dead are more reliable than the living.
meg’s real name is megara manansala ramos. her mother is filipino, her father was mexican, but adopted by a greek couple as a youth. after meg’s ‘death’, she took on the greek surname of her grandfather, ‘dimitriou’, to obtain new papers.
she’s lost count of how many minions she roped into hades’ conquest against olympus. her main job was being hades’ ‘overworlder’. she could walk around freely without drawing suspicion from the gods.
meg’s natural charm and beauty was her most useful tool, much to her chagrin. she also lost count of how many minor gods and monsters had offered her their hand in marriage, or their bed. most of them died of course, either by hades’ own impatient hand, or the quests he would put them on, or eventually defeated by hercules and the heroes of elias.
surrounded by so much death, the apathy and coldness was necessary to survive. she couldn’t be seen flinching while someone’s soul screamed on its way to tartarus. she couldn’t show fear in the face of cerberus. every weakness she showed, hades would use against her — because that was exactly what he did to all his other minions.
it did help that working under hades gave her a hefty allowance to be able to live comfortably while doing his bidding. and she learned. there was something to be said about working under the god of the underworld. he balanced world domination with handling the passage of the dead. he was a pretty good businessman, and meg would be lying if she didn’t start seeing from his POV once in a while.
and then came hercules …
she seemed to have a weakness for the golden ones.
aegeus was golden, and now here was hercules. literally blessed. muscles for days. an adorable smile. a heart of gold, no pretences, no lies. and when he carried her in his arms, she felt so warm and cared for — it terrified her.
she let herself be swept up into being courted by hercules, telling herself this was all for the bit. she was glad hercules was so strong; her goal had been to find his weakness, but the guy literally didn’t have any. she could smugly report to hades that he was virtually indestructible.
but when hades told her that hercules’ weakness was her …
she couldn’t be the one to ruin him. not like she had been ruined before. she never wanted him to know that kind of pain.
> RELUCTANT ( the somewhat present )
hades being defeated should have been a happy ending but …
meg still felt empty.
she thought once hades was defeated, the deal would be off and her soul would return to her but it didn’t.
i wanted the price of meg’s deal with hades to be something she couldn’t forget. what does it mean to sell your soul to the devil when the devil was already back in hell?
i wanted to make it so that souls were kind of ... a tangible part of one’s body, once it was gone via strong magic (a god’s magic), you can definitely feel it missing. meg is walking around soulless.
so what does this mean? since working under hades, she found that she needed to sleep less. she could stay awake for longer, not need food for longer.
her body needed it of course, but her heart didn’t long for it. with her soul outside of her body, she had to learn to take care of herself in a different way — making sure she was eating and resting enough. meg’s apathy was largely wilful, but it also couldn’t be helped because without her soul, it was harder to stay connected to the living.
making connections with people will eventually be her saving grace (without getting her actual soul back rip), because then her friends and family will be like little batteries keeping her going </3
and this was the most shattering truth of all. the heroes could rejoice, hercules could be a god, hades was defeated … but she was still trapped.
the reluctance came with wondering whether she should try anything.
how was she meant to get back to the underworld? could she talk to a god about getting her soul back? could she talk to hercules?
but hades’ nagging voice remained in her head: she was hercules’ weakness.
and even though he was imprisoned in the underworld, she still feared destroying hercules somehow … in the old ways of breaking his heart, or in some new way that hades must have set up, something she had no idea about.
so she distanced herself from hercules — without so much as a goodbye.
she distanced herself from everything that once connected her to hercules. she avoided the gods. she knew about the god’s child with maleficent, and while her heart felt for the little baby (just another pawn like her), she felt it best that she forget him too.
she lived quietly, taking whatever she could from hades’ old place — pawning all of that to have enough money to get a new place — and finding a new job. hopefully one that didn’t ask for her soul.
she visited california after hades disappeared, to try and find her old house. there she caught up with an old family friend, and on a whim, she gave them her address in elias — and the friend contacted meg’s parents.
meg received news her father died earlier this year, and her mother sent along the belongings her father wanted to pass on to meg. one of them was a camera. another was a book of recipes.
now meg lives in the posh part of town, after being mysteriously gifted an apartment by an old woman named hattie. ( secretly ... this was hestia. the gods still keep an eye on her yes maam )
basically just think of the Arconia from only murders in the building (i’m taking the easy way out and just saying it looks like mabel mora’s apartment jdfhgvjhgd)

she knows she’s not going anywhere. maybe it’s because it’s the last place hades was around, or because of the magic in elias, but meg feels the most alive in the city — and this isn’t ‘alive’ in the inspiring sense. she literally feels like there’s something about the city that feeds the missing part of her. elias became a battery.
she’s avoiding any more pain by keeping a distance from people. she had a period where she had a few hook-ups with people, but nothing that lasted more than a night. no close friends, no meaningful lovers, no family. all she’s wanted since she was a little girl was peace and solitude, and she thought she could find this in people but all they’ve done is mess her up — or vice versa.
she’s happier with the small hobbies she’s collecting (it’s the one thing that makes her feel fully human). and music, of course. meg can’t be seen around elias without a pair of headphones — if she’s ever seen at all.
and who knows maybe one day she’ll be able to fix the problem of her soul.

I was meeting a client at a famous museum’s lounge for lunch (fancy, I know) and had an hour to kill afterwards so I joined the first random docent tour I could find. The woman who took us around was a great-grandmother from the Bronx “back when that was nothing to brag about” and she was doing a talk on alternative mediums within art.
What I thought that meant: telling us about unique sculpture materials and paint mixtures.
What that actually meant: an 84yo woman gingerly holding a beautifully beaded and embroidered dress (apparently from Ukraine and at least 200 years old) and, with tears in her eyes, showing how each individual thread was spun by hand and weaved into place on a cottage floor loom, with bright blue silk embroidery thread and hand-blown beads intricately piercing the work of other labor for days upon days, as the labor of a dozen talented people came together to make something so beautiful for a village girl’s wedding day.
What it also meant: in 1948, a young girl lived in a cramped tenement-like third floor apartment in Manhattan, with a father who had just joined them after not having been allowed to escape through Poland with his pregnant wife nine years earlier. She sits in her father’s lap and watches with wide, quiet eyes as her mother’s deft hands fly across fabric with bright blue silk thread (echoing hands from over a century years earlier). Thread that her mother had salvaged from white embroidery scraps at the tailor’s shop where she worked and spent the last few days carefully dying in the kitchen sink and drying on the roof.
The dress is in the traditional Hungarian fashion and is folded across her mother’s lap: her mother doesn’t had a pattern, but she doesn’t need one to make her daughter’s dress for the fifth grade dance. The dress would end up differing significantly from the pure white, petticoated first communion dresses worn by her daughter’s majority-Catholic classmates, but the young girl would love it all the more for its uniqueness and bright blue thread.
And now, that same young girl (and maybe also the villager from 19th century Ukraine) stands in front of us, trying not to clutch the old fabric too hard as her voice shakes with the emotion of all the love and humanity that is poured into the labor of art. The village girl and the girl in the Bronx were very different people: different centuries, different religions, different ages, and different continents. But the love in the stitches and beads on their dresses was the same. And she tells us that when we look at the labor of art, we don’t just see the work to create that piece - we see the labor of our own creations and the creations of others for us, and the value in something so seemingly frivolous.
But, maybe more importantly, she says that we only admire this piece in a museum because it happened to survive the love of the wearer and those who owned it afterwards, but there have been quite literally billions of small, quiet works of art in billions of small, quiet homes all over the world, for millennia. That your grandmother’s quilt is used as a picnic blanket just as Van Gogh’s works hung in his poor friends’ hallways. That your father’s hand-painted model plane sets are displayed in your parents’ livingroom as Grecian vases are displayed in museums. That your older sister’s engineering drawings in a steady, fine-lined hand are akin to Da Vinci’s scribbles of flying machines.
I don’t think there’s any dramatic conclusions to be drawn from these thoughts - they’ve been echoed by thousands of other people across the centuries. However, if you ever feel bad for spending all of your time sewing, knitting, drawing, building lego sets, or whatever else - especially if you feel like you have to somehow monetize or show off your work online to justify your labor - please know that there’s an 84yo museum docent in the Bronx who would cry simply at the thought of you spending so much effort to quietly create something that’s beautiful to you.

(ie. the wikipedia page)
ooc note: this is in-character public knowledge that other citizens of elias could research/already know about cruella's past.
> the early years.
the daughter of famous fashion designer and former model, malevola de vil, cruella rose to the top of fashion’s heights as a teenager. at eighteen years old, she released her first fashion line, with the help of her mother’s connections and her father’s financial backing ( her father, known mining tycoon, ernest de vil ). and in a matter of months she gained fame for her fresh designs and innovative ideas. 
between the ages of 18-23, it seemed like she did nothing but work and party. 
one of the things she’s most known for is being one designer who still relishes using real fur and real leather. her house had to go undergo a lot of investigations with ethical sourcing, but they all passed with flying colours.
“i live for fur, i worship fur. after all, is there a woman in all this wretched world who doesn't?” ( cruella de vil, quoted outside the house of de vil, london, 2009 )
she had a famous photoshoot with annie leobovitz where cruella posed with various animals, and she donated money to various animal welfare organisations to show her support.
> a falling career.
however, in the same amount of time, there were other designers rising as well. most of cruella’s 20s were spent fighting to stay on top. 
“the main problem she’s encountering here is … well, it’s not that her designs aren’t good, it’s just that everyone else’s is just as good or even better. it’s an especially difficult time to be a rising star in fashion. are you still rising if everyone around you is too? cruella simply can not stand out. the house of de vil is doing well, but it’s not exceptional. she’s still famous, but not notorious. it’s a tough nut to crack.” ( vogue journalist andy sachs, in an interview during paris fashion week, 2011 )
slowly she picked off each designer one by one, each strategic defeat of her contemporaries feeling like a timebomb ticking away. and still, it didn't feel like enough to cement her at the top.
“i want to swim in a pool of gold and furs. i want to bathe in silk and dye my red heart to the perfect shade. is that too much to ask?” ( cruella de vil, vanity fair quote, 2011 )
what made it even worse was that anita was rising to the top too. 
in her late 20s, she started doing animal prints. zebra stripes, cheetah patterns. she got a little bit of attention here, as she was playing with these patterns in a fresh new way. but there was a creative block. things started to get repetitive. lots of people in her network began to lose faith in her innovation. for years, she had a dry spell.
and then, aged 32, the announcement was made: spots. and it was all downhill from there.
> downfall, accusations of animal cruelty, london fashion week ‘stunt’
no one knows exactly what was happening in the house of de vil at this time. whistleblowers reported cruella was trying to drive home the idea of actually skinning dalmatians, sourcing them through dubious means. many stated that cruella’s designs were impeccable, inspired, really. but cruella was known for her furs. and she wasn’t about to stop anytime soon. 
quickly, the house lost its sponsorships and cruella’s network began to fade. no one wanted to be associated with rumours that everyone knew in their hearts to be true. cruella de vil has always had a shadow of suspicion around her, but now the veil was being thrown off. she was uninvited from london fashion week. stores took her designs off their racks. investigations were launched once more over the house of de vil’s ethical practices.
for two months, no one heard from cruella nor the house of de vil. 
then at the fashion show of anita darling, she came back. 
“ it was … it was positively barbaric. we already heard there was some sort of kerfuffle happening in the dressing rooms — of course now we know it’s because cruella had people splatter all of anita’s outfits in black. ” ( anonymous witness, london fashion week, 2019 )
“ — there was an abnormal delay. and then lots of screaming. cruella came out in a dress with a huge train … i think the train was a messy stitch of all of anita’s previously released designs … and then she dumped all this paint onto the runway. god ! you should’ve seen everyone’s faces. she must’ve got the good stuff ‘cause i couldn’t get it out of my hair for days. black and white all over the place. ” ( anonymous witness for the ny times, london fashion week, 2019 )
after the stunt, cruella and her team disappeared. reports saw her showing up in her country manor, named ‘hell hall’ by the locals (real name: hellman hall). while police reports were drawn up and charges made, all charges were dropped within a month and no further action seemed to be taken against cruella de vil. 
> resurgence ( late 2021 to present )
cruella de vil effectively disappeared off the news radar for nearly two years.
in late 2021, a surprise interview came out with vogue. in ‘the de vil repenting’, she was interviewed at her hotel room in london, and it detailed how she had been in rehabilitation and seeing various psychologists and psychiatrists since 2019. 
“ cruella appeared as if muted; her iconic black-and-white hair was swept back with a hairscarf, and the black of her clothes seemed dull. it had to be a conscious choice. for the first fifteen minutes of the interview, it felt like i was speaking with someone completely different, and what this means i don’t know. but then she smiled, at some inane joke about taking a vacation on the greek islands, and there was the cruella we all remembered: sharp and unsettling, but still unbelievably magnetic. ” ( paragraph 1, ‘ the de vil repenting’, 2021 )
in the interview, she expressed how the past few years had been difficult. the death of her mother had been part of her ‘breakdown’ leading up to 2019’s london fashion week. 
“ i feel terrible for my darling anita … she was the one bridge i never wished to burn. but i can’t blame her and her family for how they may feel towards me … i accept the blame, but i do wish to move forward. ” ( cruella de vil, quoted in ‘the de vil repenting’, 2021 )
following her mother’s death, her father also fell ill months later. 
the sudden reminder of mortality, according to cruella, inspired her to finally make a change. she knew she wanted to come back to fashion, but she was working on the best way to marry the old cruella and the new cruella. 
“ i’m still the same old me … i don’t wish to change all of me, there has to be some part of me that’s good after all … but i know i cannot continue hurting everyone the way i have in the past. fashion is my one true love, i could never part with it. but i know now there is no future in fashion with animal byproducts. which is why i’m taking my time … i’m talking with the best experts … i will be better. ” ( cruella de vil, quoted in ‘the de vil repenting’, 2021 )
the vogue interview ‘the de vil repenting’ coincided with the house of de vil’s return to the runway, in a small fashion show in london. 
since then, cruella has released only a handful of new pieces each season. she seems to be taking it slow, truly showing a thoughtfulness to the production of fashion in a way we haven’t seen yet in the house of de vil. 
her next move is moving to the city of elias, california, and building her new main house of de vil there. 
time will only tell if this ‘good will kick’ will stick.

People who were spoiled as children (or are spoiled children) are usually depicted as unpleasant monsters who insist on getting their way always, and for sure they exist but I’ve also met a lot of spoiled people, children or adults, who were super nice and generous because they were brought up with the knowledge that if they let someone else have something or give away one of their possessions they’d just get another one and that carries over into adulthood where they might not get another one but they still don’t feel the same attachment to material things.
So in my experience whether spoiled people are unpleasant have more to do with the values instilled in them by their parents as well as their general personality. I know one boy who won’t give anyone anything despite his parents giving him everything he wants and another who will hand you his entire birthday cake if you ask because he trusts that you’ll share it with him and if not his mom will get him another.
So nice spoiled people in fiction like Carlotte from Princess and The Frog aren’t unrealistic but they are probably a lot less satisfying for a lot of people.
