I had started a 2nd piece for the #calligraforms workshop but it was just cutouts. I also don’t care for the canson paper so I spent this morning painting and adding some silver gel lines in random spots. This piece uses ស (sar), the first consonant in my name. Overall, I love this piece.

When writing Calligraphy. It is important to take it slow. Being aware of every movement of the wrist and fingers. Taking care of each stroke with precision. Then taking a step back and seeing what mistakes were made and how they can be prevented in the future. . There's always lines to depend on when writing Calligraphy but I used to used the square grid guidelines for Arabic calligraphy and focus on the shape of the letter. I would use tracing paper and write over the teachers writing until I got tired and then repeat it again and again until I felt I can do it on my own. . That's why when you see me on YouTube I use tracing paper to encourage my students to do the same. When learning Calligraphy you need to learn step by step in bite size chunks. You can't scoff an entire 16" pizza in your mouth likewise you can't learn a Calligraphy script in one sitting. You need to learn at a steady pace, observe and pay attention to detail. The key is to be patient. . If you observe professional Arabic calligraphers you will realise they write really slowly as if their pen is dancing on the paper, so soothing and relaxing to watch. . Weekend workshop with Societ of Scibes hosting #calligraforms with amazing instructor Wissam Shawkat whose work is so amazing to begin with. TBH, this style pushed me out of my comfort zone and I struggled all weekend. A, I used forms I don’t often use for calligraphy work,B, I’ve been taught to make my work “legible” and C, I’m not comfortable with failure. For the final piece, the more I look at it, the more I’m happy with it. It isn’t as abstract as I had hoped but it pushed me to further my understanding of shapes. This piece uses ស (sar) and ង (ngor) which are 2 of 3 consonants in my name and have really interesting shapes. See behind the scenes and other students’ work which were all amazing! .
