Saying goodbye has never been my strong suit. I wish it would've gotten easier over time — with as many goodbyes as we've had to give, it should be easier. It's not.

I guess it's gotten easier with people who mean less. Friends, distant family. It's fine if we don't see each other too often, because the time we do spend together ends up feeling more valuable. I don't mind the few times we see each other each year having more weight than they used to, but with Orion, it's so, so different.

She's my absolute best friend. She's my unconditional, unwavering biggest fan. She's my voice of reason. She makes the good days even better and the bad days a bit less bad.

I had a life without Orion, before we met, but I never want to live a life without her again.

From the moment we woke up yesterday until now, both of us have been a lot more somber. We cling to each other as much as we can, needing to be as close as physics will allow. The only times we are apart are when one of us uses the bathroom.

I tossed and turned all night, my mind racing with thoughts. Why didn't I try harder to convince her to come with us? How often will we actually be able to talk? Between her classes, work-study, LSAT prep, press interviews, soundchecks, performances, traveling, sleeping, and time zones, how often will our lives line up?

I love touring. I really do, but I love Orion more than anything else in this entire world. I would do anything for her as soon as she asked.

I try to remind myself we’ll be back in time for the holidays and for O’s birthday, so while we’re missing time together, we aren’t missing any important days. Orion already has a Friendsgiving planned and I’m sure she’s got Secret Santa in the works too. I try to just think about the good parts of traveling and all of the fun things we’ll get to do when I get back. Emelia and I have already been trying to plan a trip for her and O to come join us on tour for their fall break, but we’ll see if that actually ends up being possible.

We’re not flying out until 3:00 this afternoon and don’t need to leave for the airport until 12:00, but I wake up at 6:00. I don’t wake Orion up until 8:30, but I spend my two and a half hours of silence in bed, holding her as close to me as I can without squeezing her so hard that she’d wake up. She looks so peaceful like this, her hair loosely cascading around her face, her skin makeup free, and her eyes closed, making it even more apparent that she has long, thick lashes. This is the last time I’ll wake up like this for a few months. I sneak a selfie of us, hoping to use it to remember how it feels to sleep next to O while we’re a million miles away.

To wake her up, I just start peppering kisses all over her face. First, her forehead. Then, her eyelids. Each cheek. Her jaw. Her temple. I wait for her eyes to sleepily blink open before I press my final kiss to her lips.

"Mornin', baby."

She smiles, sleepily gazing up at me. "Morning."

I could get lost in her eyes forever.

"Wanna get pastries and coffee?"

Her smile grows into a grin. "Yes, please."

After a morning of flaky croissants, weird lattes, and a long walk around the neighborhood, Orion and I took our last shower together for a while. We stood under the steamy stream of hot water, just holding each other in silence. I'm going to miss those moments.

Following the shower, I dress in an all black sweatsuit and slides. Orion pulls on the shirt I wore yesterday — "it smells like you" she explained — and a pair of sweat shorts, slipping her Birkenstocks on. We cuddle with Duke on the couch while we wait for the van that Matt sent to pick us up. I make sure to pet Duke a ton and give him a few treats so that his last interaction with me is a happy one.

The call that the driver is here comes far too quickly, and we buzz him up to let him get my bags. I don't make him carry all of them. He gets my two larger checked bags, and I grab my duffel bag, and Orion carries my backpack. I probably overpacked, but things seem to mysteriously disappear whenever we're on the road.

"Are you going on vacation?" Ron asks when we're clambering through the lobby with all my luggage.

"Cal's going on tour," Orion explains. Her sad expression hurts something in my chest.

Ron smiles. "Oh, wonderful! That's so exciting. Calum, I hope to hear about your journey when you return. Best of luck!"

I smile graciously and nod. "Sure thing, thanks Ron. Keep an eye on this one for me, will you?" I motion to Orion, who glares in response, and Ron agrees to make sure she's safe.

We throw my bags into the trunk of the black van, the driver opening the sliding door for Orion and me. I let her get in first, of course, and then climb in after her, closing the door behind me. We sit as close to each other as we can in the backseat, my arm wrapped around Orion's small frame, her head on my chest, my other hand intertwined with her hands while she traces over my tattooed initials.

She's already crying, and I have to look away so I don't follow suit.

The drive is silent; the driver doesn't even play a shitty top 40 station. All we listen to is the GPS navigation.

Our driver takes us to a special entrance at LAX where we don't have to mix with the public, and as we pull up, I see Michael and Crystal getting their things out of the van that brought them.

"Hey guys!" Michael cheers.

Of course, they're happy. They're not spending this tour apart and are going to get to travel the world together. They're looking forward to this whole thing, meanwhile I'm dreading it.

Okay, I suppose dreading it isn't quite how I'd describe it. I'm excited to tour and see fans all over the world and perform the music we just released. I am dreading being apart from the girl I love most.

Orion doesn't say anything, she just waves to him.

When Michael catches onto our mood, he frowns and runs over to us, wrapping us into a hug. "Don't be sad, guys! This tour isn't that long. We'll be back before you know it, O."

She sniffles and nods, pulling back from Michael. "I'm gonna miss you guys." Her teary eyes catch Mike's gaze and then I see something in him shift before he hugs her again. Orion keeps her hand in mine while she hugs him back.

"You're gonna make me cry too! It's gonna be fine, OK? We all love you and will miss you just as much as you miss us."

Once Orion manages to regain some of her composure, we head inside. Our bags have already disappeared, except for our backpacks and Crystal's tote bag. When we get in, Matt, Ashton, Luke, Sierra, and most of our crew are already in there, milling about.

"Great, you're here," Matt says while he walks up to us. "Let's go ahead and start going through security."

Again, we're in some separate part of LAX that the public doesn't have access to, but we do still have to go through TSA like everyone else, it's just a separate, far smaller one.

Unspokenly, everyone lets Orion and me go first so we can have as much time on the other side as we can together.

Once we've gone through security and have our shoes back on, I pull Orion off to a secluded corner and just hug her as tight as I can. I can feel her tears soaking my sweatshirt, and I try to console her by smoothing my hand over the back of her head. Her small hands clutch at the back of my sweatshirt, balling the material into her fists.

It takes a lot of effort for me not to cry.

Why is saying goodbye so hard?

I don't know how long we're standing there for. I'm just trying to be here with Orion for as long as I can.

"Boys, time to board," Matt calls.

Fuck. It's time.

"Say your goodbyes," he adds.

Even though he says boys, he's not talking to Mike or Ash or Luke. Crystal and Sierra are coming with us, and Kay is at the hospital with her grandma, and the rest of our crew wasn't allowed to bring guests into the airport at all. He's just talking to me.

Orion squeezes me closer to her as hard as she can, and I just keep smoothing her hair. It's so soft.

I take a few deep breaths, preparing to speak without my voice cracking. "I'll see you when I get back. I love you."

She sniffles, and I feel her back shake while she cries. It breaks my heart to be the cause of this pain. She doesn't deserve it. "I love you," she manages to say.

I pull back so I can look at her. Her face is red and puffy, tears shiny on her cheeks, and yet, she's still so beautiful. I could look at her forever. "You're the prettiest girl I've ever seen, even when you're crying," I tell her, meaning every single word. I wipe away her tears with my thumb.

She scrunches up her face and blushes, looking so cute while she does. Everything about her is just... perfect.

"Flattery isn't getting you anywhere today, babe," she starts. I pretend like she's wounded me. "I love you. Go, board. I'll be cheering you on every night."

Instead of replying, I lean down and kiss her again. How can I not kiss her every day? I lived a life without Orion before, and I never want to do that again. I want to kiss her every day for the rest of my life. I want to make her laugh every day. I want to love her every day. God, I can't imagine not loving this girl. How can anyone not fall in love with her?

"I love you so much. I'll call you when we land, okay?" I kiss her nose. We're going to Japan first, so it'll be quite a long travel time. I don't want her waiting around trying to time the call correctly, so I'll just plan on calling her the moment our wheels touch down in Tokyo.

"Did I mention I love you?" I ask. That makes her grin, and my heart hurts a little less.

"No, I don't think so," she teases.

"I did!" I pout.

Orion gently pushes my chest. "Go."

I sigh, nodding. "I'm gonna miss—"

I'm cut off when a hand grabs my shoulder and I feel a body behind me. "Cal, mate, we've really gotta go." It's Ashton. I hang my head and nod.

"It's not easy to say goodbye to the love of your life, dude!" I defend myself.

Ashton grins, but his eyes are sad, too. He must be thinking about how Kay isn't joining us yet, either. He gets how hard it is to leave. "She also literally just told you to go!"

"I'm gonna miss you too, babe," Orion chimes in. She kisses me again and then she steps several feet away from me, too quickly for me to try to catch her and pull her back. "Go!" She laughs.

I know she doesn't mean it negatively; she's just trying to let me do my job and what I love, but it hurts somewhat that she's telling me to go. I can't explain it. I sigh.

"Okay, fine, I'll go," I decide sadly.

Orion blows me a kiss as I walk backward toward the door, and I numbly leave, trying my hardest not to cry. Once I'm through the door, I let a few tears fall. I realize then that no one else has gotten the chance to say goodbye to Orion, so I'm the only one getting on the plane from our group.

The crew, Michael, Luke, Crystal, and Sierra join me soon, each offering me sympathetic glances.

"We're gonna have fun, mate," Michael says, throwing an arm around my shoulder. "Orion's a strong girl, she'll be fine without you."

I just nod, not saying anything.

I take my seat on the plane, watching the rest of our crew clamber past me. I wonder what's taking Ashton so long to board. I know he and Orion are close, but it's odd considering now we're just waiting for Ashton and Matt. I quickly send a text to Orion while we wait.

To: my love + stars i love love love you. i wish you could come with us, maybe next tour? you say the word and i'll fly you out wherever and whenever you want. i miss you already. xxx

When Ashton finally boards, his eyes are red and he's wiping away tears, too. He sits next to me, sniffling quietly.

"I'm gonna miss her," he admits.

I smile sadly. "Yeah, me too."

From: my love + stars i'll miss you far more i promise. love you the literal most ever. go take on the world.

“She loves you so much, man,” Ashton mutters.

I’m not sure where that came from, but I know emotions are at a high. “I love her so much.”

He nods. “I know.”

Once everyone is on the plane, they shut the door and we start taxiing. Ash gets out his headphones, signaling to me that we aren’t going to be talking on this flight, at least not now. I get mine out too, send Orion a few heart emojis, text my family that we’ve boarded our first flight of the tour, and then put it into airplane mode.

I check the time. It’s 2:32. Underneath the numbers, I stare at the picture of Orion and me from the other day when we got ice cream. She looks so pure, and happy, and the sun reflected in her eyes in a way that made them almost look lit up. I can’t wait to be back and see them in person again.

God, this is going to be a long tour.

3. Biggest self-insert OC?

Sarah started out as a self-insert OC in a Xavier's School RP on the Ctrl+Alt+Del forums, in the eaaaarly 2010s. Since then, she's absolutely developed to be her own character, but she's sort of the person I would like to be now, regarding her chosen family, love of cooking/baking, and being creative. Meanwhile Oz has all of the money I wish I had and more, and Angie is as confident and cool as I want to be.

4. What kind of music do your OCs listen to?

I definitely can't list them all, just because I have so many OCs, so I will focus on my favorites for the rest of the questions, haha. Sarah loves artists like BABYMETAL and Paramore, her older sister Angie has a giant range of likes from Halestorm to Gary Allan, Oz is a big Britney Spears and general pop music/Top 40 fan.

5. What are some of your OCs biggest fears?

Oz hates all bugs, snakes, and lizards - it gets a tiny bit better when Doyle starts showing an interest in herpetology, but not much. Sarah has had to go to therapy to stop being anxious anytime she starts to get hungry, but she still carries snacks with her everywhere. Neither of them are a fan of men being loud and aggressive. Most of Angie's fears involve Sarah getting hurt in any way, shape, or form. (He is not okay when she goes through her one pregnancy - especially when he finds out about pregnancy psychosis.)

6. Do you have any OCs without stories? Will you ever create one for them?

Angie's wife, Rayne, and one of Oz's relationships, Andy, don't get written about enough. I really hope to change it someday.

7. What are your favorite relationships between your OCs? (Romantic or platonic!)

I love Oz and Calum's relationship, and how they are basically childhood sweethearts. They also have a third partner later in their life--a sweet, scholarly astrology nerd named Jakob that I haven't posted anything about on AO3, but have plenty of old WIPs with him. I also love that Oz has so much love in his life - not just from his family and partners, but he has so many friends. He considers Nic, Andy's wife, to be his platonic partner as well as best friend - they are married in a Bridgerton AU to save both of them from a life of misery.

8. Do you have any OC family trees?

Most of my OCs have fleshed out parents and siblings, though there are a few only children. Sarah and Angie are siblings, with Sarah four years younger. Oz has a sister that is two years younger than he is. There is a Gravity Falls AU that I like to think about, but idk if I will ever write, where Angie and Jakob are twins/stand-ins for Stan and Ford, and Sarah's grandkids are stand-ins for Dipper and Mabel.

9. Favorite OC?

Angie. He's such an asshole and has done and gone through so much, but he also made the decision to be better, and worked so hard to do it. He earned the relationships he has with his wife and Sarah, (they lost touch for a few years, Angie was in a bad place and acted like a dick to drive Sarah away 'for her own good') and beat his own mental health and cancer, and has a life he never thought he would have. (He always thought he would be a Very Unimportant Member of the 27 Club.)

that WAS me bestie! I assume you're referencing my two little mashton hug analysis posts <3 and i am more than happy to pop off again about my Thoughts on the way Ashton hugs.

so buckle up for this one bc this is gonna be a jessay

Just as a little refresher, in my previous "hug analysis," I talk about how when Michael hugs Ashton, he always used to hug him with his fists closed and often with only one arm. From what we've learned in the past, Ashton is not a very touchy guy. He's referenced previously that he didn't participate in the band cuddles when they were young and also isn't the biggest fan of hugs/cuddling in general; he isn't into physical affection.

This is important to note in reference to the way that Michael hugs him because Michael is always very aware of this. Ashton doesn't like hugs so Michael doesn't hug him in the way he hugs Luke and Calum who both love physical affection. He hugs with his fists closed and one arm usually so that way, Ashton has a lot of space and opportunity to "escape" the hug if need be. Michael is very careful not to trap him. However, as you pointed, we got a ton of post-show hug content this year and that's not something that we usually saw w/ Ash in the past!

I was just thinking about this the other day, funnily enough, that Ashton suddenly decided during this promo/tour cycle that he really liked physical affection. There were multiple times during shows - and even in press - where he actively sought out physical affection from the guys.

This moment, for instance, really stood out to me.

This is behavior from Ash that we didn't really see prior to 2022! There's so much physical affection in just this one frame! He's leaning his head on Cal's shoulder, touching him on his knee, and also letting Calum lean closer to him and hold his head. He doesn't seem put off by the affection at all whereas, in previous videos we've seen of Ash, he can sometimes physically lean away from touch (as the Ashton connoisseur I am, I've also noticed that he's actually a very jumpy guy and there are several instances I've seen of him flinching away from people when they get close without his prior knowledge). But now, we see a big change from him in this era where he is the one who is trying to get physical attention.

For obvious reasons, I think quarantine is to blame for this newfound behavior. From what we've heard from Ash, quarantine was a great but also rough time for him. He was able to write his album and really tap into certain parts of his creative process but was also going pretty stir-crazy and wasn't able to do the things he often relies on for peace/happiness. Over the years, we have seen that Ash thrives from social interaction. He loves connecting with people. And I assume that quarantine was especially hard on him seeing as he is an extrovert who craves that connection and no longer has access to it. Taking this into account, I think his newfound desire to be physically close with people makes a lot of sense!

I think that over quarantine, after not having the opportunity to hug/touch his best friends (who are all very touch-prone people), he realized he didn't want to have that taken away again. He realized the benefits of touching his friends as now he knows what it's like to not be able to.

However, all this being said, Ash still hugs in a similar way to how he used to. Even though Ash is the shortest in the band, he makes active effort to be the "dominant" one in a hug, always being the one to hug the guys over their shoulders. You will never find a 5sos hug photo where Ashton is the one hugging from the bottom. Even if this means standing on his tippy-toes or the other guys leaning down for him, Ash will always hug from above.

I think this pretty clearly shows Ashton's inherent desire to be a protector/caretaker for his friends/little brothers. He doesn't let them take care of him nor does he let them take him into a hug. He always wants to be the one to invite them in, and to hold onto them. And I also think this showcases a lot of discomfort from him still to be the one who gets comforted rather than comforts. He pretty obviously does not like being "trapped" in a hug.

The only person he lets hug him from above, actually, from what I've seen, is John Feldmann. I think I've talked about this before somewhere but I find this especially noteworthy because Feldy is one of the few parental figures in Ashton's life who actively sought to take care of him rather than sort of... rely on him as a crutch? Obviously, I don't wanna speculate, but Ashton has talked about it in many interviews that he felt very responsible when he was younger for his mom/siblings. He never really got taken care of as a kid. But Feldy was an adult in his life that did seek to provide for him and help him and treat him like someone who was younger and deserved to be given that guidance. And, of course, Ash loves him. They clearly have a really incredible bond like Feldy does w/ all the guys. So it's notable to me that Feldy is the only person Ash lets hug him from above because he's one of the few people in Ashton's life that he doesn't feel a responsibility to protect.

Lol, saw someone answering a long ass ask where they detailed why they dislike Max and it's honestly so funny. The only valid reason they had was Max winning, which is fair. People always hate a winner so I understand but the other reasons were funny. One reason was because "Max always makes up excuses for his fans behaviours and never calls them out". Like Lewis does? Like Charles does? Max is the only one who calls out his fan, mate. When did Lewis actually call out his cult for being misogynistic, pedophilic, abalist, *that word for shaming people for being born in a particular country, I can't remember it*, racist to Asians, Latinos, Muslims etc. When did Charles call out tifosi for calling Sophie a whore, wishing death on Max, being racist to Lewis, harassing people, making children and women feel up safe in Monza? When, when??

Another reason was because "Redbull only supports him and not anyone else". But have you considered that maybe he's just that good that everyone else looks not that good compared to him? Like Mercedes wasn't, isn't catered toward Lewis? Redbull in 2010-2013 wasn't catered towards Seb? Last night Redbull celebrated Checo's win despite Max' bad race and Max was part of it too. This was the funniest to me that "Max can never be happy for someone else when he has a bad race". There's literally a compilation of Max congratulating other after his bad race. When Charles won in Austria, Max was the happiest person in the world, even more then Charles. There were other points but I don't remember them.

And the worst thing is that they write fanfics about Max 😭 and a lot. Like their most well received works are about Max 😬. And they are a Charles and Seb fan (apart from being a member of cult lh). They dislike Max but like current and rbr era Seb, who's exactly like Max but even more unhinged. They could tolerate even love Seb when he was dominanting every race and doing that finger taunt but have problems with Max doing it? Honey pick a struggle 😪.

Sorry for the rant here. I could send it to them but they would never acknowledge this. And these are the same people who say shit like "why are you interacting with me, I'm allowed to have my own opinions" when you try to put them in their place. It all about having your own opinions until it doesn't fit your agenda. So Lando isn't allowed to want his best friend to win? Alex doesn't get to happy for Max? Seb doesn't get to say he wants Max to win? Where is the freedom of speech and thought now? Then we have Lewis who never called out the sexist posts made against Hannah, or the racist posts against Calum who got a lot of them post Zandvoort. He also never called out the racist abuse Yuki got after Zandvoort or called out the death threats that Max got last season and during Silverstone never called out the booing but he more or less expected Max to call it out when it came to him. Lewis only calls out stuff when it will benefit him, he could give less of a Fuck about sexism, racism or death threats when it comes to Red Bull drivers or members. The shit in Monza should have been called ot by all drivers, espiaclly the chants against Sophie, they were vile but the fact the media never commented on the abuse in Silverstone, and Monza but jumped on the Austria, Spa and Zandvoort bullshit when there was no issues at the latter two races, only a bullshit story about a flare being thrown at Lewis😭😂

Last season in Turkey they were basically depressed that Bottas won yet here Red Bull have been cheering on Checo, backing him all the way….yes they favour Max but they don’t throw a fit like Ferrari did at Silverstone and not go to the podium.

I agree. For all people in general, not only public figures, it’s no one’s business how someone spends money they have earned for themself. Their money, their business.

I was told by my parents growing up that you don’t talk about money. So I don’t understand why fans would be so concerned with something so private like that.

With relationships, that’s different because 5sos openly talks about their relationships and involves their partners in their work so I feel like talking about their relationships is fair game. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I think the only time they’ve ever talked about their finances was in that one video and only in reference to investing in crypto.

'5 Seconds of Summer have proven why support acts shouldn't be overlooked'

'5 Seconds of Summer may have had a helping hand from One Direction but almost eight years since their last tour with the group, the Aussie lads have proven they're more than enough, writes Daniel Bird...'

'Arguably one of the biggest bands right now, it's no surprise that 5 Seconds of Summer are continuing to sell out arenas.

Having seen the four Aussies at the start of their career, playing in venues with a capacity of 300 with tickets being sold for less than £15, to now seeing them at stadiums and sold-out arenas, they've come a long way. Luke Hemmings, Michael Clifford, Calum Hood and Ashton Irwin first joined forces in 2011, uploading videos to YouTube and amassing a string of fans.

One of those happened to be Louis Tomlinson from One Direction, who invited the quartet to support them on their 2013 Take Me Home Tour. They went on to support the 1D lads for another two years on the Where We Are and On The Road Again tours, performing to millions of fans across the globe.

But while they were warming the crowd up, the group were also busy with their own music, with early releases including Out Of My Limit and arguably their best track, Heartache on the Big Screen, they soon went on to establish their own name, 5SOS (five sauce). With this new-found fame came their own fans, in their thousands.

Tickets for their headline shows would sell out within minutes as fans packed venues to hear their favourite songs live. But in 12 years, they've proven that support acts shouldn't be overlooked. Many of us go to gigs, often missing the support act or not taking anything away from them but these lads were different.

Was it their humour? Their childish energy at times? Their on-stage banter with one another? That's something we won't know but their recent show at Manchester's AO Arena on the The 5 Seconds of Summer Show was certainly one of their best. Opening the show with Bad Omens, certainly set the mood for the night as Luke, Calum, Michael and Ashton delved through their back catalogue and delivered an electric set.

Part of the show included audience participation, with a giant red dice being launched into the audience by Hemmings, allowing the crowd to choose the next song, with Voodoo Doll being chosen, much to the excitement of the 21,000 roaring fans. This opened a gateway for the lads to discuss their past, with Ashton recalling staying at a hotel over the road from the arena while supporting One Direction.

"About ten people knew who we were at the time, now look," he exclaimed while reflecting on their meteoric rise to success as he recalled performing at smaller venues before the band managed to sell out the biggest indoor arena in Europe. But while reflecting, the group looked towards the future as they stated their plans for the next few months are pretty empty.

This, however, is for good reason as lead guitarist Michael is set to welcome his first child with his wife, Chrystal Leigh Clifford. Joking about his future, he laughed while saying he will be going from playing in front of thousands of fans to having a "house covered in poop" before Luke interjected, adding he will be able to teach Clifford's daughter how to wear make-up.

Anecdotes aside, the group certainly showcased their performance skills and failed to stand still for the cheering crowd as they made their presence in the arena known. Having seen the lads perform countless times, this was certainly their best performance to date.'

part one

“Tanner, right?”

The blonde woman dressed in a magenta sweater, baggy jeans, and green sneakers turns to find the owner of the voice that just spoke to her, ripping her gaze from the photograph on the wall. 

“Yep, that’s me,” she says with a bright smile.

The man holds his hand out to her to shake. “I’m Ryan. Big fan, and also a friend of Lou’s.”

Tanner smiles even bigger, but instead of shaking his hand, she pulls him into a hug. “Ryan! Oh my goodness, it’s so good to finally meet you!”

It’s the opening night of their mutual friend Lou’s newest photography collection at a gallery in London. Both Tanner and Ryan are photographers, which is how they know Lou, but they’ve never met, with Ryan constantly on tour with 5SOS and Tanner always chasing down new projects in new cities. Tanner has followed Ryan for so long and somehow had never been able to meet him, despite being a huge fan of his work.

“I can’t believe we’re finally in the same city at the same time,” Ryan says.

“I mean, I couldn’t miss Lou’s new stuff! Everything he does is so inspiring.” Tanner motions at the space they’re in, filled with fellow creatives and Lou’s photographs blown up to being a few feet tall a piece. 

Ryan laughs, watching as the blonde woman in front of him stares at the art surrounding them with stars in her eyes. “He always cites you as his biggest inspiration, Tanner.”

She shrugs, her eyes fixating on a photograph of an antique watch that Lou has manipulated a lot in Photoshop, warping the edges and adding in colors. She loves it and makes a mental note that she wants to talk to Lou about it later. “Life and art and inspiration and ideas… we all share it. It’s not yours or mine or his. It’s ours.”

Tanner refocuses her gaze onto Ryan to find him shaking his head at her. “Y’know, I always wondered if your ‘spiritual, perpetually philosophical and uplifting’ thing was just for Instagram.”

Tanner rolls her eyes. “I’m not like that. What you see is what you get.” 

Ryan smiles. “Good. The best people are like that.”

She nods, her smile matching his. “Totally.”

“Tanner! Ryan! You made it!” Lou appears from the crowd with his arms open for his two friends.

“You know I don’t turn down a chance to come to London,” Tanner chimes while she hugs the photographer. 

“The show is sick, man,” Ryan tells his friend, hugging him after Tanner lets go.

“Surprised both of you could make it, honestly,” Lou chuckles.

“Literally! I’ve been hoping to meet Tanner for so long now.”

Tanner blushes and shrugs. “I am just a girl with a camera and a dream.” 

Ryan and Lou laugh loudly at her comment and share some kind of knowing glance. 

“The guys are gonna lose their minds when they find out I used my days off to come to London and meet the Tanner Thorne.” 

Tanner raises her eyebrows. “The guys?”

She knows who 5SOS is, and she assumes that’s who he’s referring to. Who doesn’t know who they are? How do they know who she is? Sure, photographers and some models know who she is, but people don’t just know who photographers are, even if they’re the ‘famous’ ones. 

Ryan laughs quietly. “You know, the loud, tall, gangly men in 5 Seconds of Summer.” 

She rolls her eyes. “I know who they are, Ryan. Why would they lose their minds that you met me?”

She’s really that clueless? Ryan thinks.

“Tanner, you and Valerie are one of the most iconic best friend duos on the planet. Everyone knows who you are,” Lou explains. He’s used to Tanner being like this. She’s humble and unaware of the effect she has on people. It’s endearing. 

Valerie Summers is Tanner’s lifelong best friend. She’s also one of the biggest supermodels in the world. Tanner and Valerie were discovered simultaneously, with Tanner behind the lens of each photograph of Valerie that caught the media’s attention. When Valerie got her first modeling contract, a photographer that worked with the agency asked Tanner to be their apprentice. At the age of 17, the best friends move to New York to begin their careers in fashion. 

Their careers took off, with Valerie eventually moving to LA to pursue work there and Tanner beginning the start of her nomadic lifestyle that she still leads. They don’t see each other much, but at every fashion week or awards show, you can find them attached at the hip the entire night. Tanner knows Valerie is a star, but thinks of herself as just a girl in a press pit, taking pictures and hiding in the wings.

“You didn’t hear it from me, but Ashton is obsessed with Valerie. Watches every single interview she does, buys any magazine with her face on it, says it’s the biggest goal of his life to have her breathe on him.”

Tanner snorts with laughter. Ashton Irwin, the drummer, has been Valerie’s celebrity crush for years. Val has never had the guts to approach him, even though they follow each other on Instagram. It’s too funny of a coincidence. Valerie bought Ashton’s solo album on vinyl and has it framed in her bathroom. Their obsession is mutual, and nobody knows it. Until now.

“You’re shitting me,” Tanner giggles, but when she looks at Ryan, she can see he’s being completely serious. 

“Obsessed.” 

“Val’s into Ash, Ryan,” Lou says, laughing just as much as Tanner is.

Ryan’s jaw falls open. “What? No, no way!” 

Tanner shakes her head, still laughing. “Obsessed. Superbloom is her most played album of all time.” 

With wide eyes, Ryan shakes his head too, starting to laugh with his two friends. 

Deciding it’s fate that brought them together, Tanner knows what she has to do. She needs to get her best friend on a date with Ashton Irwin, and the way to make it happen is right in front of her.

“Here, let’s get them together, Ryan. Give me your phone. You should totally give Ashton her number.”
