drawing every gerudo in gerudo town, batch 7: (from left to right) calyban, leena, kotta, and liana
this batch includes legend calyban (the one eating all the hydromelons) and the group of gerudo guards concerned about their missing friend in the desert (her name is barta)
keeping in theme of barta being missing in the desert, i focused on functionality in the desert with these guards while retaining some armor and their existing design elements. when traveling in the desert, you want to be as covered as possible to keep the sun from your skin. this includes the face, possibly including visors to keep their eyes safe from the sun and sand.
also i think this batch marks when i got tired of giving everyone green eyes.

Doodles of Link and Calyban from Tears of the Kingdom
Tumblr media
Another doodle sketch of Link and Calyban from Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom. With the sketch pose being of them bonding over a bowl of soup. =v= After her many failed attempts with Link wanting to share her success after getting the recipe correct. Within the game, if, Link decides to return a bottle he finds floating amongst the waters of Gerudo Town's caves. Allowing Link to gain a girlfriend, but she spends her time in the kitchen in Gerudo Town practicing to cook.
Tumblr media
Feel free to make a comment to suggest an outfit from the game for Link to wear in the finish version of the sketchs. Thank you for viewing my doodle.

baby aubri! lore under the cut
to sum up her backstory: her mother riya became a social outcast from gerudo town for allegedly getting together with a yiga blademaster, soon to be aubri's father (but with no proof to convict her for conspiring with the enemy.) the only traces of her sheikah heritage are the light pink highlights in her hair. they both agree aubri's father should stay away from her growing up for everyone's safety - she and her mother live as nomads, but mostly hang around the akkala region. aubri receives a summons back to gerudo town age 6, but her mother ignores it as she doesn't want her to be sheltered - but ends up being too harsh / emotionally distant with her at times in her attempt to raise her to be strong.
6 more years pass, and at age 12 during a visit to gerudo desert they're ambushed by the yiga, her father isn't there but riya surmises he betrayed their location. they barely survive the encounter, but young aubri is slashed across the abdomen by a demon carver, leaving her with this scar:
Tumblr media
riya out of desperation drops her off in gerudo town for medical help - but quickly flees before anyone tries to question or arrest her again. she decides it's too unsafe to stay around aubri, and it's for the best that she spends the remainder of her childhood in the protected walls of gerudo town. she then sets off on a mission to avenge her daughter...
meanwhile aubri trains to become strong enough to destroy the yiga clan herself someday, clearing them out of the gerudo province to make the region safe for her people, and reunite with her mother.
she still has a rebellious streak from her mother's teachings, spends most of her days escaping from town and riding sand seals (without a license!!)
her gregarious personality was damaged by the yiga attack; her new cynical attitude drives a wedge between girls her age. but she later finds unlikely solidarity with a girl a few years older, the queen of crabbinesss herself: calyban. they become proud haters TOGETHER. the story begins when she comes of age to leave.
she may have met twigs during a visit to kakariko village many moons ago, although she was too young to remember. but twigs does.

Day 85: Attack on Gerudo Town
The attack on Gerudo Town begins.
Tumblr media
It's hard to keep an eye on all the gates at once, and the sand makes it hard to move quickly.
I focus on taking out the hives first - and then we mop up the remaining gibdo. Gerudo Town is safe again, for now.
Tumblr media
Debriefing afterwards, Riju noticed that the gibdo hives became sand when they were destroyed. She wonders if the gibdo and the sand are more connected than we thought. It's a shame she and Zelda haven't had cause to spend much time together - it's exactly the kind of observation the Princess would love.
Now that the threat is passed, we can discuss Riju's summons. She wants to show me something down in the shelter.
Past the rolling door below is the vibrant Gerudo community I remember. I'm glad it's surviving this much, at least.
A young girl, Delia, immediately runs up to me - and we're told off by Lorn. She's too young to talk to Voe. Lorn does not want me here - too bad.
I find Cara, the accessory designer. I remember the shop owner she mentions - apparently she went out for supplies and hasn't come back yet. The desert must be littered with lost people. We need to sort that sand shroud. Cara says she went to the Toruma Dunes - where there are Molduga. Great.
Beside a strangely familiar orb, I meet Rotana, a scholar. She's working on deciphering stelae, writings on stone pillars. This one says:
“The seven heroines who protect the Gerudo. Their secret will be expressed on six stelae.”
On the other stela she has, it says:
“The seven heroines who protect the Gerudo. And eighth channels and guides the powers of these seven.”
Rotana says the heroines are so ancient nothing is known about them - not even if they should be worshiped as a collective or as individuals. Apparently there may even have only been one at all - or conversely, eight! Hence the eighth heroine statue in the Highlands, I suppose.
She wants to find the other four stelae and make her name in archeology. She thinks they'll be underground. I shall look out.
I find Riju looking at a mural surrounded by water.
Tumblr media
“Standing back-to-back with the throne, witness red pillars across a vast sea. Unite the pillars in light to reveal the lightning stone and open the way. You who can hear my voice, come to me. I await you.”
Incredible. Words directly from the sage, preserved here.
It sounds like I should start at the throne. But I want to explore this shelter first.
I find one of Rotana's stelae behind some crumbling rock.
Tumblr media
She translates it as:
“The seven heroines protect the Gerudo with the powers of heart, skill, fortitude, wisdom, flight, mobility, and compassion.”
There's a Hylian here, Jules. She warns me not to misbehave - there's already a man in jail. I miss the inconspicuousness of my Gerudo clothes…
There's a kid called Aaqlet - that's the name the guy in jail said as I went by. Poor guy, he probably just came to check on his kid. And her mum isn't here either, she's working at the secret clothes shop. Aaqlet has a map, which I should follow at some point.
The spa and the wine bar have moved down here, so at least people are still managing to do business.
I cross the main hall again to explore the other side - and fall down a hole! The short drop ends with a splash. There's a message in a bottle.
Tumblr media
“It's you! At long last! You, the voe reading this letter, are the voe I was fated to meet! And I am the vai you were destined for! You must hurry and rescue me! I am locked away from the outside world! Do not worry though! I will send all of my love to you until you come and find me. Stay safe and know that we will meet soon. It is our destiny, after all! -Calyban”
Oh dear. I should just put this back in the water. But where does this tunnel go, anyway?
A bunch of places: a house in Gerudo Town, a circular path that needed blasting open, and finally a korok panel. I ascend through the tunnel and head back to the shelter.
I find Calyban by the large hole in the shelter floor, but she wants to be left alone. Fair enough.
Another kid, Kalani, also hides her face when I approach. I leave her be and stop at the goddess statue.
Tumblr media
In exchange for the four Sage's Wills I've found, I grant Tulin a stronger attack. I also get three heart containers, to hopefully make it harder to blow myself up.
I stop in at a classroom, and find myself in use as a teaching aid. Nali is too shy to look at me - but I do have that Sheikah mask… it's not enough for her. I don't actually think I have any full-face masks - I'll have to come back.
Past where the sand seals are hanging out, I find a room that's almost a miniature of the valley of the seven heroines.
Tumblr media
I wonder… I've seen a  few small orbs around. This would seem to be the place for them. I wonder what happens if I find them all.
I find a buried and broken stela, and manage to blow away the sand and put it back together again.
Beyond, a much larger tunnel. The valley of silent statues.
Tumblr media
It's already been a long day - in fact, it's nearly over. But I want to know what's down here…
I find Nellie, who's been exploring down here a little. She doesn't seem to think much of it though - she's heading back to the canteen.
Let's find out for myself…

any botw npc hcs/thoughts? this goes from major to minor. also any favorites in general
ok so i actually had a weird story for the origins of link's house in botw and how bolson got permission to tear it down (he probably just asked reede) but technically it belonged to one of his ancestors! i don't actually know why i ever wanted to elaborate on this because now that i've said it out loud it is kinda lame.
teebo! he's a freak. as far as i'm aware none of his paths lead him anywhere near the other hateno kids and he's an only child so i think he's pretty lonely. i actually headcanon that after botw the horned statue starts talking to him and he can hear him. (this is actually a big reason why i hate totk hateno, other than. cece. teebo didn't get an updated model like a lot of the other kids and he arguably sounds younger than he originally did. plus he's just Doing Nothing.)
prima (ton pu inn) really likes ghost stories!
i have a backstory for lorn (fruit seller and dalia's mom in botw) where she used to be friends with a gerudo tattoo artist until they fell out a few years ago.
the sheikah have learned to bind their own spirits to their graves and use them to protect kakariko. the yiga can see them barring entry. dorian was able to infiltrate but it was quite difficult, and meant he couldn't use much of the magic yiga have without being detected.
paya's mom's name is lovi!
my favorite major botw npc is purah, my favorite minor one is either the horned statue, teebo, or calyban. i also like the one yiga traveler who gushes over master kohga's potbelly. silly

Now that I've been done with Tears of the Kingdom for like 2 weeks, my thoughts on it have solidified. Spoiler free thoughts: the major elements of the game (dungeons, bosses, main quest) are a lot better than Breath of the Wild, but its moment to moment gameplay leaves me wanting something more, or really something else.
Minor spoilers below.
The depths are neat but very underbaked. Without shrines or much scenery to explore, it felt like a gear dump. Like you go down there for gear, bombs, and zonaite and that's about it beyond the ocassional hideout. The sky islands are very cool, but there are too few of them, and the ones that are there are too samey. There are like 5 separate islands that are essentially copypasted. You know the ones: there's like a crooked x bit and a launcher in the middle, a gacha dispenser, and a "fetch the crystal" shrine. The low gravity areas were very cool, but only used rarely. I could live with repeats if they're at least reskinned. But the depths and the sky islands were all visually almost identical, so no areas really stand out: the gerudo sky and the akkala sky look exactly the same, and the areas underground are also indistinguishable. Caves are fine, only one really impressed me (the big lookout landing shelter hole that leads to hyrule castle was cool as hell). Again, they're all visually indistinct, and follow the same formula (other than the eldin ones that are spicy).
It feels incoherent in a way that Breath of the Wild didn't. It's like a lot of little ideas packed together that don't necessarily mix. The shrines felt a little better than BotW's, and I'm very glad the tests of strength were gone, but most feel a bit insubstantial, like a massive snack instead of a meal (a problem in BotW too, but given the time they had, it's a shame there wasn't more done with them).
Ultrahand is really the only new ability worth a damn. Fuse is just ultrahand, and quickly becomes a routine necessity instead of a fun bonus. Ascend is just a quality of life feature outside of maybe two overworld boss fights. Recall is useful for puzzles, but rarely any good outside of that. In contrast, I used bombs, ice, and stasis all the time. Magnesis was no good, ultrahand is a straight upgrade there. I just don't really care about the vehicles. It's not what I play zelda for, and it's not what I play games generally for.
I think it's really hurt by being so similar to BotW at its core. Breath felt like a big jump forward, something new and exciting for zelda and a high water mark for open world games. TotK feels incremental, a decent refinement in some ways, and a frustrating step back in others. If it came out 2-3 years after BotW instead, that might have helped. As it is now, i don't think it will stand the test of time in a way that Breath of the Wild has. I don't feel like going back and replaying it.
It's fine. Middle of the pack zelda. Fun bosses, great final boss fight, cool story, and a few good side quests like the yiga stuff. Unfortunately, everything in the middle is kind of goopy and undefined. It slipped out of my mind as soon as I was done. Very few of the locations stand out in my memory, unlike how they did originally in Breath of the Wild. I still remember climbing dueling peaks the first time, watching the sunset in lurelin, camping on a mountainside and waiting for a dragon to come by, jumping off the great plateau for the first time. In TotK, I remember the water, lightning, and wind temple, and the underground yiga hideout. I remember fiddling with car parts and glider angles and a hot air balloon not working quite right. I remember my gerudo gf (Calyban 💙 Link) that lived in front of a cooking pot and grinding for rupees and monster parts.
I liked the idea of rebuilding hyrule and forming connections, but it didn't really work in practice. The game is left in this awkward middle ground where it's not empty enough to feel intentionally lonely, and not deep and crowded enough to feel lively. It also feels weirdly discontinguous from BotW for a direct sequel. It feels more like a do-over or retcon, like how Deltarune remixed people and places from Undertale, but it shouldn't since it's the same world, the same canon. There's very little from your previous adventure that carries over or that anyone mentions, even though it's only been a few years. The timeline between the two is very messy as well, but that doesn't really matter. It just feels off.
There's a lot to be said about how a game feels, about what it evokes and how, beyond or in tandem with the mechanics. BotW felt almost like a semi-transcendental meditation, a lonely journey through the wilderness, a piece of art with Something To Say about games, the series, maybe even life. TotK feels like a video-game-ass video game, like a lego set. If the temples and bosses were lifted from Tears and put into Breath (and maaaybe the building stuff was added as like a big expansion to BotW) I don't think anything of great value would really be lost. Some of the character work was nice, but there's not enough of it.
I really wish they would make something smaller, more inventive, and more intentional next. I want less control, less stuff, more feeling. But given the sales and praise for TotK, I sincerely doubt that will happen. Instead, we'll wait 7 more years for "another one."
And where the hell is my big bird man Kass

Some random sketches that are unfinished for Link with both of Calyban and Riju. As they are my favorite to visit when playing the game. ^-^) Risa sketch was done for fun with replaying botw and her responses to meeting a Voe, along with her dialog in totk. I wanted to draw her holding a Yiga footsolider that tried to jump her as she tried to take some bananas that were a trap for Link. With her winning quickly against him, and carrying him off. With Link and Calyban wondering if they should intervene. ^-^ Just a fun doodle. I do ship ZeLink, but I like these two with Link as Well. Especially Calyban since she prepares food for Link, while Riju allows Link in and out of Gerudo town. =v= Although I like to think Link sees Riju as a little Sister in game, while she has a crush on him, despite him liking Zelda. ^-^)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
=v= I like Riju as she reminds me of Midna from Twilight Princess with Patricia being a reference for Wolf Link.

Last commission of July for  @pocketseizure, who was an absolute joy to work with, especially on their concept ;u; this is definitely one of my favorite requests in BotW, mostly because I can just imagine Calyban managing to convince Dalia to plant hydromelons in her garden, where they can use the rinds for compost instead of polluting! A win for everyone :D
