More plampts and harvests!
Tumblr media
Mini eggplants! I like how eggplants and other fruits can get tanlines from where the calyces block the sunlight. (Solanum melongena 'Patio Baby F1')
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A pepper that I lost the tag to/forgot to label entirely, but I think might be 'Salatiga Orange Block'. It has no heat and a fun taste that I would describe as intensely concentrated pepper flavor. It doesn't show up in the photo but it has some purple stripe/blotches!
Tumblr media
Solanum opacum or the Australian greenberry. One of the weird nightshades I was actually able to get to fruit! (I like trying to raise unusual nightshades but am not necessarily successful at growing them.) These ones are super weird and don't taste at all like what I was expecting. It's a very melony sweet flavor. I was thinking it was going to taste like a typical undomesticated berry and be tart with some mild sweetness.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Solanum corymbiflora survived its second year outside and is flowering again!

I don't have motivation to write a story or come up with headcanons, so here are some scenerios that happened in my classroom! I'll only use my classmate's first names btw (Translation will be underneath in italics with open and close parentatis)
While watching the Mortal Kombat 2021 movie:
*watching Hanzo kill Lin Kuei members*
Me and Lucio: *Cheering Hanzo on*
Roshan: *Confused silence*

Roshan: Anong movie yan?
(What movie is that?)
Me: Nanjan si Scorpion, nanjan si Sub-Zero! Manghula ka, p're!
(Scorpion is there, Sub-Zero is there! Take a guess, dude!)
Lucio: Roshan, pag hindi mo to alam, hahampasin kita!
(Roshan, if you don't know, I'll punch you!)
- -
*Liu Kang shows up on screen*
Me: *Loud squealing*
Giro: Kumalma ka, crush mo ba yan?
(Calm down, is that your crush?)
Me: Hindi, pero favorite ko yan.
(No, but he's a favorite.)
- -
*watching ending*
Me: *realizes Cole is talking about Johnny: YES! YES! LET'S FUCKING GO!
making Mortal Kombat 1 references:
Me: *Pushes glasses up with middle finger*
Lucio: *Gets up and starts winding up his middle finger*
Me: *Gasp* alam mo yon?!
(You know that?!)
Lucio: Oo, Johnny Cage diba?
(Yea, it's Johnny Cage, right?)
Calyce: *yells from afar* Johnny x Kenshi!
Me: YES!

Lucio, Omni-Man: They don't make movies about movies about movies about movies about movies about movies about movies-
Me, Johnny Cage: What the fuck?!

Me, Johnny Cage: *pure silence* ...
Lucio, I don't know: *pure silence* ...
Lucio: [VIDEO GAME NA ALAM NYA] na to, kaylangan mo mag bayad para may dialogue

During our Christmas party:
Elise: Bat' naka all-black ka?
Me, looking emo as fuck: Para kapag pinatay kita, hindi makita ang dugo mo.
(So that when I kill you, your blood won't be visible.)
Small fact about me:
- Elise had a crush on me, a guy in grade 8 has a crush on me, a guy in grade 11 has a crush on me and two girls in my class has a crush on me(I'm dating one of those girls right now actually).

Vision of The Great Shadow Youma
Tumblr media
Late submission for @smvillainsweek 2023 Day 3, theme: Prophecy. This piece is also (loosely) inspired by the "Our Super Weapon R" fan manga from 2003, by Senhi Shinban and Kazuyuki Tsukine, though I've reworked the ideas to fit my own story: "The peace talks between the Golden Kingdom of Earth and the Silver Millennium Kingdom of the Moon were finally going well. The people of Earth would take more convincing, but Queen Calyce and Queen Serenity were already good friends, and agreed on a plan to establish nine "Crystal Points" within the Golden Kingdom, giving the Earth's people the same longevity enjoyed by those living on the Moon. Prince Endymion and his four Heavenly Knights were busy keeping the peace, fending off a series of energy-draining attacks (perpetrated by servants of a mysterious Dark Pact: the dark "Princess" Osakaite, and her minion, Ullmannite the spy). In the meanwhile, the prince sent his trusted assistants, the Seven Warriors of Fortune, to meet with the four guardian soldiers of the Moon Princess to help plan the Crystal Points. The shy young Warrior Bunbo and the kind genius Sailor Mercury got along quite well- but when Bunbo finally worked up his courage to shake her hand, he had a terrible vision- and the dreadful feeling that it was already too late...!" The day 4 piece goes with this one, and includes an explanation of the manga "Our Super Weapon R" (which has a different telling of the Seven Great Youma's adventures during the corruption of the Earth Kingdom):

紫陽花[Ajisai] Hydrangea macrophylla
Reading 紫陽花 as ajisai is an ateji.
It is a garden variety improved from 額紫陽花[Gakuajisai] and what appears to be a flower is an ornamental flower with well-developed calyces.
There is a kanji 英. Reading this in kun-yomi(Japanese-style reading) as hanabusa, it means calyx or flower cluster. Reading this in on-yomi(Chinese-style reading) as ei, it means excellent. In passing, English(language) is written as 英語[Eigo]. 英 in this case is an abbreviation of the meaning of the United Kingdom. 語 means language.
It is also known as 七変化[Shichihenge](Seven changes) or 八仙花[Hassenka](Flower of the eight immortals) because its flowers change color depending on the pH value of the soil. In Japan, it is the rainy season before summer now. The flowers of Ajisai look great in the rain.
The name of the person who painted the following picture is 英一蝶[Hanabusa Itchō]. https://colbase.nich.go.jp/collection_items/tnm/A-11719?locale=en

Magnolia Slope
Lotus blossoms adrift out across treetops flaunt crimson calyces among mountains.
At home beside this stream, quiet, no one here. Scattered. Scattered open and falling.

For anyone that's curious, these are the doctor's notes from surgery:
PATIENT NAME: REDACTED
MRN: REDACTED
DOB: REDACTED
DATE OF SERVICE: 9/27/2023
PREOPERATIVE DIAGNOSES:
Nephrolithiasis [N20.0]
POSTOPERATIVE DIAGNOSES:
Nephrolithiasis [N20.0]
NAME OF PROCEDURES:
right ureteroscopy with laser lithotripsy
right steerable ureteroscopic renal evacuation (C9761) (CPT 53899 crosswalked to 52001)
right retrograde pyelogram
right ureteral stent exchange
SURGEONS: Dr REDACTED
ANESTHESIA: General.
OPERATIVE FINDINGS:
Large right renal pelvis stone (Note from me: this is the 1.6cm stone)
SPECIMENS: Yes kidney stones
ESTIMATED BLOOD LOSS: Less than 5 mL.
COMPLICATIONS: None
CONDITION: Stable
DISPOSITION: PACU - hemodynamically stable.
INDICATIONS
Patient is a REDACTED y.o. female with nephrolithiasis.
DESCRIPTION OF OPERATION (Note from me: Added spacing to make it a little easier to read)
After obtaining proper consent, the patient was brought to the Operating Room and anesthesia was induced.
They were placed in the low-lithotomy position and prepped and draped in the standard sterile fashion.
A 21-French ACMI rigid cystoscope with a 30 degree lens was placed in the bladder without difficulty and the bladder was inspected.
No stones or lesions were seen and the right ureteral orifice was identified in its orthotopic position.
The previously placed stent was grasped and brought to the urethral meatus.
The ureter was intubated with a sensor wire through the previous stent and was advanced to the renal pelvis under fluoroscopic guidance.
The previously placed stent was then removed and discarded.
A ureteral access sheath was then placed over the wire without difficulty.
A flexible ureteroscope was then advanced up to the renal pelvis.
Extensive laser lithotripsy was then performed on this large stone until all residual fragments were 2 mm or less.
Vacuum Stone aspiration was then performed with the CVAC device.
Flouroscopy was performed to guide the aspiration of stones and stone fragments were captured for analysis in a trap used in the suction tubing.
Retrograde pyelogram was performed by injecting 6 cc of Omnipaque.
The patient had normal renal anatomy with some mild upper pole caliectasis.
A filling defect of stone fragments was noted in the renal pelvis.
All calyces were inspected for residual stones on repeat ureteroscopy.
A few residual pieces were removed by basket stone extraction.
No residual stone fragments over 1 mm were present on final inspection.
The flexible ureteroscope was then removed, leaving a wire in the renal pelvis, and the ureter was carefully inspected during withdrawal.
A 24 centimeter x 6-French Double-J ureteral stent was then placed over the wire.
Excellent positioning of the stent was confirmed by a curl in the renal pelvis and a curl in the bladder.
The bladder was then drained.
The patient tolerated the procedure well and was transferred to the Recovery Room in good condition at the conclusion of the operation.

Blooms and fruits!
The Kleinia stapeliiformis I keep at Chocolati flowered!! Fun fact— these are weird succulent members of the daisy family Asteraceae.
One of the milkweeds I germinated last year Asclepias fascicularis also had its first bloom. Milkweeds like Hoyas all have very weird, fleshy, mostly-star-shaped flowers.
The Roselle Hibiscus Hibiscus sabdariffa is finally fruiting as well. It’s been flowering but the calyces just fell off. Either it was waiting for the data to shorten or it’s just happier now that it’s in the ground and not a pot. The cool looking pseudofruit are used in jams and teas! I ate it raw and it was very sour.

Roselle aka sorrel aka hibiscus from flower to glass!
Growing hibiscus in my area, the Southeast US zone 8a, is pretty low-effort. I sowed the seeds in place in a sunny spot and kept the soil moist. Once the seedlings get a third set of leaves I pretty much left them alone. They started blooming in August and they'll keep going until the first frost.
The part of this hibiscus that makes the drink isn't actually the flower petals. It's the calyx, which is the part of flowers that protects the bud before it blooms. On Roselle hibiscus, this calyx continues to grow after the flower falls off and becomes tart and juicy. The seed pod will develop inside the calyx, and for making hibiscus drinks you'll want to separate them out. There's a way to use the seed pod's natural pectin to make jelly, but I haven't perfected it.
There's a couple different ways to use the calyces for drinks. You can simply pick the pods and dry them and use the dried material to steep a tea. You can also boil them in an amount of water that covers the calyces and strain out the material to create a syrup for a more concentrated flavor you can use in drink mixes. I added 3/4 cup of sugar and a generous portion of honey to mine.
The overall flavor of the Roselle hibiscus is very tart and similar to cranberry juice. I like to snack on the calyces right from the branch, they taste like warhead candies a bit. They're high in vitamin C and antioxidants, and the color is just lovely. If you have warm summers and want to grow some, I'll mail you seeds!
