I've always thought it would be kinda funny if Sir Arthur was like... tyrannical, almost, and very biased about monsters. Something, something, police commentary.

i feel like evil/heavily morally gray arthur is something thats slowly risen in popularity and now is super prevalent nowadays. which is kinda hilarious to me, because by comparison im sitting over here with an extremely soggy version of him. hes like a dog i gave anxiety. the thought of leading anyone again gives him hives. even during the war he was plagued with imposter syndrome thoughts of oh shit i dont really know what im doing

evil/morally gray arthur is cool though, i can definitely see the appeal. even in my gsa government theres some problematic elements here and there like classism because the gsa operates on a heavy class based system. as you might be able to imagine, some quality of life rights stuff like that gets put at the bottom of the to-do list and never resolved because the higher ups first priorities is always, "hey how do we make sure people dont literally die out in the field". i prefer not to go for a full evil gsa though since i thought the whole, oh the group you thought was good actually sucks as much as the bad guys, was a bit too bleak of a universe for me.

my arthurs a guy who tries his absolute best to do whats right for everyone and ends up struggling as a leader because he has difficulty stomaching that a lot of times, there no perfect, or even good, solution to things and you still need to make those choices and deal with the consequences and blood technically on your hands afterwards. trolley problem type deal

the intention was not to discourage people from calling elfilis/elfilin they/them though or to insult they/them (and be extension it/its) characters though. it was to say that i don't see a problem with calling them something other than they/them and respecting other people's interps too. kinda like if someone hc'd a male character as a tgirl. i might not agree, but i would respect it. gender hcs should for fictional characters should be a pretty chill thing imo.

hey man, nowhere in my post did i call you a horrible person. i said some of your reasoning was transphobic, which is a trap anyone can fall into, because unwittingly repeating unfortunate rhetoric is very much not a moral judgement.

and i wasn't offended by your post, because it's a sentiment i pretty much agree entirely with, just couched in some kind of silly reasoning and a broad misunderstanding of what people are actually complaining about.

most of the folk saying things like this aren't complaining about people using different pronouns for established characters (elfilis, in this case) in their own headcanon. as it was stated in my post, we're frustrated about people straight up misgendering elfilis on a universal basis.

this is an extremely widespread and specific problem with characters whose pronouns are they/them, or god forbid it/its. look at any given character whose pronouns are they/them and you will see countless people in the english-speaking sphere flat-out refusing to gender them correctly. for just a couple examples, look no further than frisk undertale + kris deltarune, the gems from houseki no kuni, and yes, indeed, elfilis. this is such an ingrained and common problem where people just innately reject the possibility of a character using they/them pronouns, let alone the idea that they might be nonbinary in any way, and because of it, you get people constantly misgendering these characters and bending over backwards to justify themselves: "oh, well, you know, this character just doesn't seem like a they/them... it was never stated directly... i'm just more comfortable using he or she..."

it's a longstanding, observable issue. elfilis, predictably, doesn't escape it either, and thus you have rafts of the english-speaking fanbase ignoring this character's proper form of address.

and elfilis' pronouns are in fact canonically they/them and it/its, by the way. this is part of the transphobic reasoning i was referring to: in both real life and regarding fictional characters, it is transphobe standby number one to insist and insist and insist and sealion into infinity that there's ~plausible deniability~ on they/them pronouns. it's used because we haven't met this character! we were never told for certain that this character uses they/them! it's for literary ambiguity! they/them are plural pronouns so it's the text referring to multiple people!

i mean this in the kindest possible way: you are just incorrect here, on multiple points. there is absolutely nothing ambiguous about elfilis' pronouns. multiple times, elfilis is strictly, directly referred to with they/it, where elfilin is referred to with he/him. the game is not being ~vague~ here, it is presenting you with plain information. the game not telling us elfilis' precise, discrete gender identity is not the same as the game not telling us elfilis' pronouns. elfilis is referred to with neutral pronouns in every language except for the ones that literally don't have neutral pronouns.

(even french has a well-known and accepted neuter pronoun these days, but our good friends (derogatory) l'Académie française refuse to ratify it so NoE didn't use it in the localisation.)

additionally, kirby is not referred to with gender-neutral pronouns. i assume you're referring to japanese here, in which case you've been misinformed by a common misconception spread by people who don't speak japanese. kirby is never gendered at all in japanese. it's not "kirby is canonically non-binary in japan!" or "kirby is canonically they/them in japan!", kirby is canonically nothing in japan. they go out of their way to not mention it. depending on your translation standards, japanese doesn't even have "they/them" as a singular pronoun. i explained this in my post here, and there's an additional post i made on the topic regarding a slightly different version of this fandom misconception here.

anyway, tl;dr, no-one is complaining about people giving elfilis different pronouns in headcanons and AUs. we're complaining about the exhaustingly common phenomenon of people forgetting how to be normal about gender when a character uses they/them.

hey! hope i'm not bothering you with this ask, but i was wondering what pronouns morpho uses in the original knight of hades novel? you translated them as "he", which i thought was interesting since in the games it's almost exclusively referred to as "it". i know that japanese pronouns work a little differently than they do in english.

I did that translation both new to Japanese and new to Kirby lore and most of my notes didn't make a file transfer, I'm sorry to say I don't have a super profound answer for you on this 😅

When I worked on that book it was a practice project I shared with a few people that they loved so I shared it on Tumblr too. It's one I'd like to redo at some point but I've never really had the proper chance (there's a *lot* I'd like change after learning more). What I can tell you for sure off the top of my head is most of the novel refers to Morpho Knight directly by name which is pretty common in Japanese given how the language is very context heavy. Many novels use genderless pronouns for many of the knight, orb, and helper characters while those characters still get referred to as male in official content so I believe that's the direction I took with it.

If you have any specific notes of your own you want to bring to my attention feel free to share them but I don't have much else to add on any Kirby translations since I lost most of those notes, I moved on to other interests, and I've been too busy to work on any of it or study the language recently.

waaahaaa i'm so delighted to hear it! i will be completely honest, i was extremely nervous to post that very first comic with him in (where he was undeniably malicious) because almost every other headcanon i'd seen of him at that point is that he is Just Misunderstood and Actually A Good Guy or, at the very least, perhaps currently acting out but still Redeemable With A Heart Of Gold

and those are amazing too! not a single piece of shade on those characterisations; they are genuinely cathartic tropes and i love to see them- for him or anyone else. but it made me quite scared to have to just be like... 'anyway he is extraordinarily and wilfully cruel in my headcanons and stories!!'

so it really means a lot to me that you enjoy this characterisation!! and that you think possibly it's having an impact on other folks' characterisations in a positive or refreshing way! that's such an honour! i was scared people would loathe my storytelling or characterisation of their favourite blorbo (i still fear it, ngl) or even think that i like... don't like him. but the thing is that i love him. i love him to bits and pieces and because of how much i love him i've done him the ultimate honour of assigning him Irredeemable All-powerful Villain and allowed him free reign to bite and kill

ah, don't worry! i was trying to prove a point to a mutual and somehow the morpho knight novel got roped in because they were using the male pronouns as hc fuel. i was really curious, because even though mie takase is just straight up wrong about canon material sometimes, the novel does have to get approved by people, and allowing takase to refer to morpho knight as male seemed like kind of a big deal to me in regards to the character's lore? so i though maybe it was a meta knight situation in which it used genderless pronouns.

anyway, i recently re-read your translation, and the scene where morpho is introduced reads a lot like kirby coming to the conclusion that morpho is a fusion of the butterfly and galacta knight (which... it might be) and that because galacta is male, the fusion must be male by extension (which... it might be). at least in your translation, papi exclusively refers to the butterfly as "it" before the "fusion" happens.

Yeah Mie Takase's takes on the characters can get reeeeaally biased, especially when you compare characters like Meta Knight and Dedede and how they get treated. They definitely do have to go through approval though so I think you're right on that.
