BIO OVERVIEW

Lukas was born in Ontario, Canada into a military family. His parents were often absent on tours and drills, leaving Lukas to be raised by an ever revolving door of nannies.

To attend for the absence of love in his childhood, he turned to romantic love, and became manipulative and promiscuous in his teenagehood

He joined the Canadian Army and worked his way up to a Lieutenant Colonel before becoming stranded.

He and his team had been shipping off overseas on a Naval ship on the day it was absolved by the vortex. On any normal day, he would have never been on a ship, let alone near the Bermuda Triangle. It was with an unfortunate wrong time/wrong place event that got him stranded in Bermuda.

He was one of the handful of soldiers that survived the wreck of HMCS St. Laurent. By the time he had settled on the island in 1980, an entire community of the Lost had already been congregated. All had been from commercial flights and ships except for Lt. Charles Taylor, who functioned as the island’s leader at the time. Settlement had begun, but more military presence kickstarted the survivalism.

Lt. Charles Taylor stepped down as Leader of Bermuda 10 years into Lukas’ residency. He passed the torch off to Lukas, knowing Bermuda would be well run under his reign. Shortly thereafter, Lt. Charles Taylor disappeared from Bermuda. No one has discovered how, why, or where.

Lukas continues to put out metaphorical and literal fires within Bermuda and all big community decisions are run through him for final say.

He currently resides in Pointe Forest with Ferns Village. In his opinion, living in the Forest is the most dangerous place outside of The Tundra. He stays close to protect his community if need be from the creatures that lurk there at night.

[Review] Castlevania: Grimoire of Souls (iOS)

It was inevitable; they turned Castlevania into a free to play mobile game. But it’s not bad actually!

I was interested in this game since it was announced years ago. After a soft launch exclusive to Canada in 2019, it was soon discontinued, seemingly cancelled. In reality Konami must have done a deal with Apple to rework the game for the Apple Arcade service, and it resurfaced a month ago! It feels like some other F2P conversions to the platform; gacha system and various currencies intact, but clearly a stamina/energy system and the ability to pay real money were once there and have been ripped out. Also removed from the soft launch version was the multiplayer mode and with it larger, Harmony of Despair-type maps.

The game as it currently exists is a level-based experience like the Classicvanias of old, but with a core loop revolving around loot and upgrading your stats. There’s five characters to play as, fun choices all: Alucard (Symphony of the Night), Simon (Castlevania 1), young Maria (Rondo of Blood), Charlotte (Portrait of Ruin), and Shanoa (Order of Ecclesia). It’s a good mix from different eras who play differently; I favoured Maria as I did in Rondo itself for her small stature and nimble, bird-based attack pattern, but it was also fun playing as Shanoa again and using her magnet launch to zip around and get out-of-the-way treasures.

Being a crossover with seemingly low stakes seemed an uninteresting angle to me. I preferred how the similar Chinese-developed—and sadly cancelled—Moonlight Rhapsody had a robust cast of new characters to expand the series. But GoS does try harder than HoD at least with its framing story, set nebulously post-Dawn of Sorrow, and I came to appreciate the character-building conversations, especially the ones rewarded for completing optional levels.

In terms of content it’s a lot of rehashing, given the plot involves records of past events stored in magical tomes being tampered with (sort of like Dragonball’s Time Patrol). But again it’s a fair variety of different environments, even if the enemy types feel like an extension of the Rondo->Symphony->DS games->HD recycling. Everything is redone in cel-shaded 3D models, so they really could have broadened things out in this department. At time of writing there are four worlds each with fifteen levels and a boss; difficulty (ie. stat numbers) ramps up with each but the game provides you with enough resources to keep up pretty comfortably. There’s also side modes with different kinds of challenges to keep things fresh. I feared the game would be dumped as it was and left as such, but during my playtime it received an update with UI improvements and a themed event, which gives hope that new levels and the implicitly promised Soma roster expansion will come.

Since this is an Apple Arcade game, it supports play on all Apple devices. I swapped around a lot, from my phone for casual play at any time—navigating the many menus is much better with touch—to the Apple TV with a Dualshock 4—more precise in-game controls for serious gameplay—to a hybrid approach with an iPad on my lap, allowing for touch menus and gamepad for levels. They all worked pretty well!

I can see myself returning to this when it’s updated but as it is it’s a decent little package. I’m just glad it was finally widely released in some form or other. Not that I’m getting my hopes up for what this means for the series, but Konami was invested enough in this to get Ayami Kojima back for portraits and Michiru Yamane for music, two big names from the franchise’s history, which is encouraging. Either way we still have the Bloodstained games for “proper” game experiences as well... but this is pretty good too!

Biography

For as long as Espen can remember, it’s just been him and his family. Living in the Alaskan bush in a were-bear community comprised of his family, both immediate and extended, he didn’t have much contact with the outside world and, quite frankly, he didn’t mind that. Bears weren’t pack animals, so it didn’t make sense for them to seek out others like them and with their bear spirits, they were able to live off of the land - hunt and fish for food in their fur and bring it back to their homestead to cook it up, using their strength to carry lumber for building homes or fuel their fires or carry water gallons from the well to their crops. Things were great, and though he didn’t receive the best education - having been homeschooled by his parents - he was happy.

Everything changed, though, (when the fire nation attacked) when hunters broke onto their land in the middle of the night and slaughtered the family of were-bears and one by one, Espen watched as his family began to fall. By the skin of his teeth, Espen managed to shift and run away, using a speed that most wouldn’t expect of a bear as large as a kodiak to run, until he was in the safety of the trees and he could no longer hear, or smell, the hunters. With nothing left to his name, Espen wasn’t sure how he’d survive or how long he could manage to run - though he knew he could last longer than most, thanks to the survival skills he picked up while living in the bush - and he knew that he’d have to find a safe haven of some sorts.

It was when he stumbled upon a pack of werewolves on a night of a full moon that he learned of the Chateau. At first, he didn’t think it would be something suitable for him - he didn’t want to have to live in a place that catered to all supernatural creatures, preferring the company to were-creatures (and even more, other were-bears), and he figured that a house like the Chateau was essentially a beacon for the hunters to come and have their pick of whatever supernatural creature that they’d fancy.

Eventually, though, his survival instincts won out and he traveled across Canada and the continental United States to reach the Chateau in Louisiana. Having just arrived, he’s not sure what to make of it but one thing people notice of the were-bear already is that while he’s not one to speak a lot, when he does say something? It’s obvious that he doesn’t understand social cues or the fact that there are some things you just... can’t say.

Castlevania: Grimoire of Souls to Be Resurrected on Apple Arcade

  It's been a minute since Castlevania: Grimoire of Souls briefly made its soft launch debut via Android in Canada in 2019, only to be delisted in 2020. Now, the side-scroller is mounting a comeback, with Konami announcing plans to bring it to Apple Arcade "soon."

  Grimoire of Souls lets you play as classic characters like Alucard and unlock others such as Simon Belmont, Charlotte, Shanoa, Maria, and more. The Apple Arcade listing describes it as a "full-fledged side-scrolling action game," adding that it features character designs from Ayami Kojima and music by Michiru Yamane.

→ History Duke has never really been alone. Since the moment his parents decided to have him, he’s been with his twin brother Aries. Duke's mother, who was a neuromancer, was there and aided when he bumped his head as a toddler. He first learned to hunt for food with his step-father, a disintegrator, there besides him. When he was learning to have better control of his powers, the Cleirigh family was there to help him. The only time he was really alone was when ventured out to test his master powers on a pack of wolves in Canada. He took control of them for days and that’s where the Alberta province Council caught him. It was against their council rules for those with therinology to use their master powers against mythical creatures. They had an animator within their council who quickly deactivated his powers. He was unable to leave or contact his family. Duke was sentenced to 300 years cursed as a wolf and his powers were to remain deactivated until then. 

It took months for Duke to make it back home in wolf form and he was nearly poached multiple times. When he reached home he was greeted by Ronan and Roman. The spirits around him made it clear who he was but not why he was the way he was. It was Kaylor who understood him and translated exactly what happened. His family was on a warpath but apparently the local wolf pack had already wiped out the council. They were at a loss but Duke remembered most of their names, the most predominant one being a Wilhelm. While they attacked most of the Wilhelms in Canada, South and North America, Duke remained in wolf form. As half of his family fought, the other half tried to break his curse. It was nearly a year later when Roman and Judson created a spell to change him back into his human form. Sadly, the curse was still active. When he found he couldn’t use his magic, Duke burst into his wolf form again. He only changed back this time when he calmed down. 

That’s how the cycle continued. Until one day, Ronan, Roman, Kaylor, Aries and Judson were sure they figured out a way to change him back into a warlock. Ronan and Roman had specially taken on Archives, Oracles and Animators as mentees or workers at Shutter to help their progress. However, there must have been a miscalculation on someone's part because instead of turning Duke back from a cursed wolf shifter to a warlock, they made it so every supernatural in Chicago was stuck as stuck in whatever form they were shifted in and made it impossible for every witches and warlocks to use their powers for two weeks. Everyone was furious and the cat was out of the bag after 193 years of secrecy. For the most part everyone feared him. It irritated the living Hell out of him but there was nothing he could do without endangering himself and his family. Isaac Baker, wolf alpha, spoke out on the third day of every Chicago leader meeting about the incident. Isaac offered him a spot within his pack, to help with his wolf and in return Ronan would side with them on any votes or other serious matters. Duke had never embraced being in wolf form; he never ate in wolf form, never urinated in wolf form or in general did anything besides stalk around or run. Isaac began to train him and Duke’s world slowly changed around him. 

In mid-2012 a nuisance by the name of Peter Knox walked into Duke’s life. Isaac kept Duke away from the wolves within his clan before, but had decided it was time to introduce him after they came up with an explanation. Peter was a hot bundle of frustration and emotional tension. Duke was attracted to him the moment he laid eyes on him but the cocky son of a bitch smirked. Duke’s attraction led to his anger. He was hot on Peter’s tail, constantly informing him how displeased he was that the other man was second and how he wasn’t what they needed. It didn’t help that Peter started sleeping around someone younger and of a different species. He wasn’t on Peter’s top list too, he later found out because Peter’s show of dominance never worked on Duke. Duke had no clue what it was that Peter was doing and stared at him as if he was an idiot. One random day they started talking about shitty beers and reminisced about old fashioned brewing and they clicked. Their friendship grew as Duke turned a section of the pack kitchen into a brew station and they bonded over a rare mixture that Duke remembered from his travels in Ireland. It was Peter that suggested he open a bar and Duke put his plans in motion, offering Peter to invest and possibly co-own with him. By this time, Peter had called it off with the younger species but it was only after the break up that they shared their first kiss while putting away glasses right before the grand opening of Anonymous. 

→ The Present His family has found his cure a decade too late. Duke remembers being unwilling to leave the house and too angry to face the world when his magic was taken from him. He has long come to terms with what he did and repented his sins. His sentencing was clear; 300 years as a wolf for his crimes. With their disastrous last failed attempt to change him back and his blooming relationship with Peter, Duke is unsure if he wants to be a warlock again since his relationship with Peter would have to end. He is unsure what another failed attempt could hold for their family or if it would force the truth out about him to the supernatural world. The World of “Figure Skating Music” Spun by Sound Designer Keiichi Yano (Part 1)

After a brief take on mama Hanyu yesterday, here’s an intimate look into the audio aspect of figure skating. Yamane Ito interviews Keiichi Yano (beside Yuzu at his Sochi celebration party in Tokyo in the picture above), FS venue audio PA and sound designer who has worked on iconic programs with the likes of Hanyu (SEIMEI, Hope & Legacy), Arakawa (Turandot) and so forth. 

The vignettes on the making of SEIMEI and Hope & Legacy respectively––what a story! Audio-obsessed Hanyu at his best, and how, through everyone’s good grace and mind-boggling hard work both in the team and surrounding, these programs came into fruition. - gladi.

There is a person called Keiichi Yano in the world of figure skating in Japan. Both in competitions and at ice shows, he deals with everything related to sound at the venue. And that is not all. He also sound-edits for top skaters such as Yuzuru Hanyu and Shoma Uno. Depending on the situation, he has even compiled the music for entire programs from scratch. In a place closest by the skaters’ side––supporting their performance through “sound”––we cover [Yano-san] on his work and philosophy [as a sound designer in this article].

From acoustics to sound editing

His main gig until the very end is venue acoustics as a PA, says Keiichi Yano. Having been a part of figure skating for more than 30 years, when comes time for the world championship, he manages the audio for more than 300 programs from 100 entries. Prior adjustment, final rehearsals and practice, and detailed tasks during the actual event… Everyone concerned––especially the skaters and their coaches––places full trust in his work.

The first time he was directly in touch with program audio sources was through Midori Ito, silver medalist of the Albertville Olympics. At the time, he was responsible for the recording and remastering of the original audio sources as engineer at Yamaha. It was large-scale work transforming electric organ work by music school students into a full orchestral piece and re-recording it.

Although he continued work related to figure skating after that, the audio sources played over the PA systems at venue bothered him. The sound quality, the volume, the transition of music…all of that––production was too crudely done. Just when he was wondering if he couldn’t do something about it, word came from Shizuka Arakawa-senshu (at the time). She wanted to increase the volume of the beginning part of her free program.

“Turandot” at Turin Olympics was the work of Yano-san. It goes without saying how delighted he was about Arakawa-senshu’s gold medal above all. It was a rewarding moment that made the adjustment, done in a hurry despite insufficient time, worth it.

"Recently, the pattern of producing completely from scratch seemed to be on the rise. Where to jump, or where to spin, things like that can be discussed later. If [we] don’t start from getting out the entire piece, it seems to be that choreography can’t be settled.”

Although [he] starts from creating the so-called “draft," the final program music is completed through back and forth with the choreographer and the skaters themselves. Those are all part of the job. In competitive figure skating, the outcome is decided by the total combined score from both the short program (SP) and the free skating (FS) section.  As a rule, the SP is 2m50s, and as for FS, men’s is 4m30s, ladies’ is 4m. The thing is to edit the original tracks and integrate them within the canvas of the time requirements.

There is an unending stream of music editing commissions from skaters and their coaches for Yano-san. Occasionally, skaters visit his studio at home as well. The audio for “Respeto y orgullo,” performed by Takahashi Kozuka-senshu (at the time), too, was completed at Yano-san’s study.

“We can create something [the skaters themselves can best grasp | most agreeable to the skaters themselves], so on the contrary, it’s easy to do if they come [to my place]."

Seven pieces combined––Yuzuru Hanyu’s SEIMEI

It’s well known among skating fans that Yano-san edited Hanyu-senshu’s program “SEIMEI” using the soundtrack from the movie Onmyoji. And it was said that Yano had been sending demo tracks for his consideration for a while.

He received a simple request from Hanyu, “I absolutely want to use the main theme from Onmyoji and the dragon flute tracks. I’m leaving everything else up to you.” So, he chose pieces from the two albums that seemed to fit well with skating and put them together into one. While visualizing Hanyu’s skating, he combined seven songs characteristic of [him].

“In [Hanyu’s] case, he is awfully particular about music. He said, ‘I will work with this as a basis for now’ and from this point on, went to work on building the full-fledged program alongside his choreographer in Canada.”

The email exchanges continued even after that. “I want this bit moved back 5 seconds” and “I would like the tempo at the end imperceptibly increased and bring it all to a close within the time limit” and so forth. As training progressed, “I want taiko for the conclusion,” “I’d like some ‘gap’ or ‘space’ put in right here,” et cetera. In the end, 33 versions of “SEIMEI” were made. Yano-san laughed as he reminisced about [the experience].

“The requests ballooned quickly. But, I cannot say it is impossible as a pro!”

There was a part in the middle of the program that became a hot topic amongst fans. Edited such that two tracks from two different albums were overlaid and combined into one, it came from the suggestion of choreographer Shae-lynn Bourne. The piano and the dragon flute playing the same melody were of completely differing pitch and tempo, so actually, they weren’t something that could be easily overlaid and synced. After much struggle and difficulty, Yano-san completed that beautiful part.

As a standalone “piece” that differed from the original

As program music are based on original pieces, of course there are also their composers. For Chopin or Puccini, there is no need to be particularly worried. The problem is in the case of currently active composers. By the way, Onmyoji is the work of Shigeru Umebayashi-san. So I tried to get some answers about what I’ve always been curious about:

Is there anything to talk and go over with the original composer?

“Not in particular. I may receive complaints if [the program piece] is musically ridiculous or odd, but if it stands as a piece of music, usually there are no problems. I am grateful if it may be comprehended as 'one figure skating piece.’"

Up until this point, if [Yano] is to say which is it, favorable voices have been more frequent. For example, when Daisuke Takahashi-senshu (at the time) used the music from accordionist COBA, he had edited quite some parts in it.

“I thought he would be offended, but because the download counts increased even for the original track, I was actually thanked in reverse. Afterwards, a dialogue was planned between Takahashi-kun and COBA-san, and collaborations on shows, et cetera. They had a very good relationship.

Joe Hisaishi’s great kindness––Hope and Legacy

When Hanyu-senshu brought Joe Hisaishi’s music over, [Yano’s side] got flustered. Speaking of Hisaishi-san, he is a leading musician in Japan, also famous for the music of animation works produced by Studio Ghibli.

“Although I am fine with doing it, I told the team on Hanyu-kun’s side, ‘Please at least get permission.’ We started by editing in parallel [as they sought permission]."

There was a reason why Yano-san brought this up. In the past, Kozuka-senshu wasn’t granted permission to use Ghibli music for the program piece when he edited it himself, leading to a whole sequence of events where they eventually went through the pains of re-recording in order to use the music in the program. For that reason, [Yano-san] paid careful attention to Hanyu-senshu’s request. As it was, when Hanyu-senshu’s team got into contact, they hadn’t been able to obtain approval yet.

The biggest problem was in connecting and using two separate pieces. It is inconsistent with the composer’s original thought and intent to marry pieces that are quite different from the circumstances of composition to musical concept. It’s not impossible to overlook if [he] were to edit and use either one of the two pieces. However, from the simple viewpoint of cherishing the music, connecting the two pieces was not something one can easily grant permission to do.

It was convincing explanation for someone involved in music. Nevertheless, [Yano-san] sought for courses of action to somehow obtain consent. This time, with a go-between from the television industry and several parties involved in figure skating in tow, Yano-san went to approach the Hisaishi office once again with their request.

“Although [Hisaishi] was not present, Hisaishi’s side listened to the actual piece that I had edited for the program on the spot. And [I brought up the fact] that figure skating isn’t for commercial purposes but is purely done for sports. That I hoped to be allowed to use Hisaishi-san’s music for a competitive program in this sport. That I would like to obtain permission to edit [the music] based on the competitive time requirements, demands of the performance, so forth. I requested everything formally. That it seems like Hanyu-senshu already has an image in mind; if somehow we could receive permission and talk with Hisaishi-san…”

Afterwards, Hisaishi decided to grant permission. However, this was a special exception for one time only, granted because of Hisaishi-san's kind generosity. With that, the program music, “Hope & Legacy”, took shape with exotic “Asian Dream Song” inserted between “View of Silence,” a beautiful piano piece. Only one such gem of a program exists in this world, and it became a representative performance of Yuzuru Hanyu.

Shortly after that, the team involved in the creation of “Hope & Legacy” was invited to [Hisaishi’s] concert in Tokyo. There, Yano-san greeted Hisaishi-san himself directly for the first time.

There is a person in the world of Japan's figure skating, and that is Keiichi Yano. Be it competitions or ice shows, his work involves every aspect of the sounds that play at the venue, and that's not all. He has done sound editing for top skaters like Yuzuru Hanyu and Shoma Uno, and in some cases has created a song from scratch. He stands right by the skaters, and through "sound", he supports their performances. This article takes a close look at his work and philosphy.

Mr Keiichi Yano; At most, his main job is being the venue's "Sound (PA)" (t/n: sound engineer). Having more than 30 years experience in the business with figure skating, during world competitions he can have more than 300 pieces of program music in 100 groups under his management. Those involved in the event, especially the skaters and their coaches have placed in him their absolute trust when it comes to adjustments prior to the event and the rehearsals just before the competitions, as well as the minute details of the actual performance.

He first became directly involved in program music when he worked with Midori Ito, the silver medalist of the Albertville Olympics. Then he was working as an engineer affliated with Yamaha, in charge of recording and mastering original music. It was a huge undertaking where he would re-record what Yamaha music students would compose on the Electone into full orchestral music. (t/n: Midori Ito had skated to at least 10 songs that were composed by these students, see wiki article above)

After that, although his work with figure skating continued, he was troubled by the music that played at the venues. The sound quality, volume, the way the music was cut, he found it all poorly done. Just as he thought "isn't there anything that can be done about this?", he received word from the skater Shizuka Arakawa. She wanted to increase the volume of the beginning of her song in the long program.

During the Torino Olympics too, Yano had a hand in her chosen piece "Turandot". It goes without saying that he was overjoyed with Arakawa's gold medal. Having been stretched for time while editing the music, it was a moment where (he felt) his efforts paid off. (t/n: Shizuka originally used Turandot as her SP before switching it to her LP mid-season, hence he did not have much time to re-cut the music)

"Recently I have been making more songs from scratch. Where jumps should be placed, where spins should be placed - those discussions come afterward. It seems that without creating a complete piece of music, the choreography cannot be determined."

He starts off from the so-called "drawing block" but following that, through discussions with the choreographers and skaters, he comes up with the finalised piece of program music. His job comprises all of that. In figure skating competions, the winner is determined by the combined score from the Short Program (SP) and the Long Program (LP). The SP is 2mins50secs, and the LP is 4mins30secs for men and 4mins for ladies. Within these time limits, he has to design a complete, original piece. 

There is an unending list of skaters and coaches who rely on Yano's music editing. Occasionally skaters even visit his personal editing studio. Kozuka Takahiko's "Respeto y orgullo (Farruca)" too, was finished in his study.

"It's actually easier for me if they come over, because then I can create a piece that that individual person is most satisfied with on the spot."

Combining 7 songs, Hanyu Yuzuru's SEIMEI

That Yano cut the music to Hanyu's program SEIMEI from the soundtrack of the movie Onmyouji is a well known fact amongst figure skating fans. It is said he was sent a proposed demo track from Hanyu beforehand.

From Hanyu came the simple request of 

"I definitely want to use music made from the Ryuuteki with the main theme of Onmyouji. Beyond that, I leave it up to you." 

From there Yano picked songs from 2 albums that seemed to go well with skating and cut them into one. Whilst imagining Hanyu's skating style, he combined 7 unique songs.

"In his case, he is very particular about music. He said "For now I will use this as the base" and went to his main training ground in Canada to begin creating the choreography for the full-scale program with his choreographer".

After that the email discussions continued. "The requests kept piling up. But, I am also a professional and I won't say I can't do it."

In the middle of the program, there was a point that became a topic of discussion amongst fans. It was the part where 2 pieces of music from different albums were joined and cut together into 1 piece. It was a suggestion from the choreographer Shae-lynn Bourne. The piano and ryuuteki were playing the same melody, but the pitch and the tempo were completely different, and it was certainly not an easy task to combine them together. Yano had to work extremely hard to put up that beautiful part of the piece.

Not an original music but as "one creation"

In program music there are original pieces of music, and thus there are composers involved too. When it's Chopin or Puccini, there is no real need to take special measures. The problem arises when the composers involved are still active in the field. By the way, "Onmyouji" is Shigeru Umebayashi's work. I tried to explore the above point a little further.

-- Have you spoken to the composers of the original piece of music?

"I don't particularly speak to them. If I arranged the music weirdly then they might complain about it, but if it's executed well then it doesn't really become much of a problem. I would be grateful if they could understand it as "one creation of figure skating".

Up until now, between the two responses, there have been more people in favour (of Yano's work) than not. For example, when Daisuke Takahashi used the accordionist COBA's song too, a large part of it had been edited.

"I wondered if it would turn him off but the download numbers of the original piece increased and instead he was grateful for it. After that, there was a dialogue event between Takahashi and COBA and they even planned a combined performance during a show. They developed a very good relationship with each other".

When Hanyu brought Hisaishi Jou's song to me, everyone around me became flustered. Hisaishi is the composer who represents Japan, and he's famous for his works for Studio Ghibli's animations.

"I can make it but I told those around Hanyu who assist him 'Please get permission alright?'. The editing ran in parallel with that process."

There was a reason why Yano said that. Prior to this, Takahiko Kozuka himself had edited a piece of Ghibli's music without obtaining permission to use it, and had to go through a series of events to re-record it for use in his program. (t/n: Kozuka skated to Fantasia for Nausicaa for his 2011-2012 skate, and it took a while for Ghibli to approve it. Hisaishi Jou apparently helped give advice on the editing though) Therefore, Yano paid careful attention to Hanyu's request. Of note, at the point in time when he was told about this request from the people involved with Hanyu, permission had not been granted.

The biggest problem was using 2 different songs and joining them together. The process of composing the songs and the concept of the songs were completely different and combining them together went against the composer's intentions. If either one of the songs were to be edited and used, then it was not like they couldn't just close one eye. But from the view point of one who cherishes the musical composition of each song, joining them up proved to be something difficult to give permission for.

This explanation that was readily acceptable by anyone involved in music. Even so, Yano looked for a way to get (the composer's) understanding. This time, with mediation from television representatives, Yano and a few of the skating representatives went to Hisaishi Jou's company to make a new request.

"(Hisaishi) himself was not around but I was able to play the actual piece I had edited for the program to the company representatives. And there (we explained) that figure skating was not for commercial purposes, but purely a form of sport. We wanted to use Hisaishi's music in one of the competition programs, and we wanted to obtain his permission to edit it in accordance to the competition time limits and performance. We told them we wanted to, once again, make this request of him, and that it seemed as if Hanyu had already formed an image (of his performance to this music) inside of him, so if somehow (the company) could convey our request to Hisaishi, (it would be appreciated)."

After that, they received permission from Hisaishi. However, this was a special exception that was only for that time and made possible through the courtesy of Hisaishi. The program song Hope and Legacy was created by interposing the beautiful piano piece of View of Silence with the exotic Asian Dream Song. This one and only gem of a program piece became Yuzuru Hanyu's representative work of art.

Soon after, those involved in Hope and Legacy were invited to a consert in Tokyo. Then, Yano was able to meet Hisaishi himself for the first time.

(The 2nd part of this article will be about the accident and surprise that occured at an ice show, and Yano's own philosophy with regards to figure skating music.)

Today, by coincidence, I watched in shock and disgust some of the ugly social media commentary against you and your family members following your final press conference. I read commentary no American could read without horror. Commentary no American can, should shrug off and move on. It was another infuriating reminder of how we have become boundary-blind. We may not agree with your policies. We may not agree with your rhetoric. We may not like the way you wear your hair or the way you manage a foreign affair. We may even think you are the worst president in history. That does not entitle us to posting abusive comments in social media, or anywhere else for that matter, about the President of the United States or the First Family. Because, it has never really been about who is in the White House. It is about what the White House stands for. Thanks to the exponential growth of disrespect for things we hold sacred, all of which is justified by "Freedom of Speech" or "Freedom of Press," we are now a society with no restraint, no filter, no lines. Anything is acceptable to say to anyone in any place about anything. Now, it is okay to disrespect the National Anthem. It is okay to disrespect religion. We are now inadvertently teaching our children that kindness is old school. Anger is trending. This is a form of civil war between the ignorant and the civilized. You, your family and those who read this letter must know we the civilized Americans are still here. We are not moving to Europe or Canada. We are not giving up on America. We will wholeheartedly support our next President. I will be just as angry if similar insults, inappropriate comments are made about him and his family when he is leaving the office. I do not believe in insults. I do not believe in violence. I do not believe in racism, discrimination or division. I believe in America. Because, while the definition of "Americans" may change America does not. I will not let my love affair diminish with that beautiful lady holding up the torch relentlessly on Liberty Island whose invitation brought me here 36 years ago. So, on behalf of the civilized Americans, inclusive of Republicans, Democrats, Independents, blacks, whites, gays, the poor and the rich, I apologize for the ignorant and thank you for your service, for your elegance in handling conflict, for yours and your family’s sacrifice over the past eight years. I am confident history will be kinder and more respectful to your legacy than today’s angry, misguided noise. May God bless America, now more than ever, and guide our new President as He has the previous 44.
