Idk if it’s just coincidence that I’ve encountered it quite a bit in the last few months, but recently I’ve come across quite a few websites (and a couple of apps) that are grammatically poorly written but also just like… repetitive. Content doesn’t match the title, overly-broad stuff. Like if I am browsing for a border pattern for crochet I don’t expect the page to start by telling me what a border is and why they’re good and then that there are lots of them and then only give me one, which is the absolute default border, followed by two separate sections on how to weave in ends.
And I don’t know if it’s bc the content is genAI or if it’s just that the writer isn’t very good. And I kind of care, bc if it’s genAI, then okay it’s just shit; the writer doesn’t care about this content and I shouldn’t trust the instructions. They could just make zero sense because a robot wrote them. If a person wrote it I can at least assume an intent to convey something meaningful. So if an instruction doesn’t make sense, it’s probably because it’s badly worded. But if I sit down and work through what it could mean, then I might be able to get it to make sense. At the very least I could contact the author and ask for help.
And with apps (specifically games)? Like. If it’s a human who wrote it and it’s got grammar errors, I might put up with them bc even if their grammar is bad they could still have a really good story to tell. If a robot wrote it then I have no reason to sink time into it finding out if the story is good or not because I have absolutely no reason to assume that it will be. Because robots don’t know how to write compelling stories because they cannot think.
This is not the shit that the robot is good for and not what it should be used for. :/
#the most recent website has an author but honestly#I’m leaning towards genAI bc of bigger errors like the sequence of information; inclusion of LOTS of irrelevant details; the repetition#and the overall poor structure#but that could also just be someone who is not yet a good writer!#the app could be a person?#but in a text-based game if you’re writing isn’t great#and you’re earning money from it…#take some pride in your product and just pay a copy-editor?#there are so many games out there that even from the ads you can tell the plot makes no sense#(different ads with mutually exclusive plot points)#that I kinda want some proof that this creator/team care about their story.

sometimes looking at like Self Help Strategies lists for the symptoms I'm having is always just like:
thing that I already do
thing I have tried 10 times
thing I already do
thing that I don't have the money to do
thing I already do
thing I've been doing since I was 10yrs old to no avail
thing that is impossible given my situation
thing that doesn't apply to me
thing that I already do
thing I have already tried
hrmm, oh wait, maybe finally- OH, yeah.. okay. thing that I already do but it was just phrased slightly differently
thing I have already done
#I think maybe productivity tips help less if the reason you're unproductive is partially like.. physcial health and other extenral things#out of your control. rather than just like having trouble paying attention or spending too much time on tiktok or whatever#all the strategic to do lists in the world are not going to somehow prevent me from waking up with a debilitating migraine or whatever#or having external stressors or lacking resources and connections or other Productivity Essentials etc.#especially many tips involve stuff like 'cut off from social media' since thats the modern day time waster for so many poeple#and it's like.. lol.. i can hardly even maintain a blog even thuogh i actively WANT TO DO SO. 'shut off your smart phone!' already#done babey i fucking hate smart phones i shall never use an app unless i am forced to. 'delete tiktok' yep. already covered. tiktok and#all of those thinsg are my enemies. 'save money by cancelling some of your services' cool. already ahead of you.#who the fuck is out here paying for like 10 different subscription services. pirated videos uploaded to google drive and youtube to mp3#my beloved. etc. etc. and so on. 'socialize less' .........LOL.. if only you knew.. mr.writer of the article. i can barely muster#talking to friends more than once a month and even less if I'm actively sick (often occurence) etc. etc. ... hewoo#I think maybe instead of generic productivity tips I need more like.. how to refocus and be productive anyway even if you have a headache#or are nauseous or etc. Not that those are always things to ignore. and of course you should let your body rest and etc. But plenty of peop#e have mild physical symptoms and just work through them. Ithink something about the way my body/mind is SOO hyper attuned to all#sensory information just makes it like... constantly 'GRR well I cant focus on WRITING right now because my lef#t ear feels weird and my socks are too itchy and my back has a strange pressure and I'm vaguely warm and my eye feels some ssort of#way it doesnt normally feel and I'm hyperaware of my breathing and also nauseous for no reason' and like half of those things I#think '''normal''' people wouldnt even notice or at least would be able to just live through. but for me it's like.. nealry impossible to i#gnore and soooo distracting always. like 'wahh.. nooo we can't draw or get anything done.. my legs feel slightly heavy or something!!'#like............. ok......... who cares. thats not even a PAIN sensation it's just something weird. but it's just like.. NO. constant#mental alerts about the 'heaviness' of your legs be upon ye. Though Imean like.. yes.. 70% of the time I am in genuine pain#or having some sort of actual ailment with trackable physical symptoms. but sometimes it's just like... we could totally be working right#now and ignoring this silly thing but my brain is fixated on it for no reason uncontrollably. etc. etc. I guess it's the same way that like#most people can go to a grocery store without the whole experience being so overwhelming and so much stuff going on at once#that they have to rest afterwards but like.. in my own HOME doing NOTHING i feel like I should be able to not get overwhelmed lol. ANYWAY#Rolling my bastard little rock up a dumbass hill and so on and so forth

Okay since I've been venting to a very patient @invincible-selfxmade-punk about the Woes of a Side Gig I am grateful to have, here are some of the positive highlights:
I got to teach a bunch of 6-8 year olds about Troodons! The kids were telling me about their favorite dinosaurs and I got to show them mine and inform them that the velocipators in Jurassic Park were actually Troodon sized and real raptors were smaller. Also I can't tell if I just can't understand how 6 year olds speak, if there are new species of T-Rexes out, or if Jurassic Park's franchise is making them up but okay.
A little kid informed me proudly that Mew had no gender. Yes, the Pokemon. "Mewtwo is a boy," he said authoritatively. "Mew is not a boy or girl." I said "Well, some humans are neither boys nor girls" and did not press the subject.
Also after seeing the pride flags inside the building I felt comfortable using they/them pronouns and was respected!!!
On that note, I noticed the kids called authority figures "teacher" instead of "Mr" or "Ms." I like that too.
A kid went on a long, long tangent about Gundum I couldn't follow and while I don't care about Gundum 1) it's a great gateway anime 2) my best friend's husband (anime geek) and their 4 year old son love Gundum so I'm glad to see it mainstream.
I got to learn all about cool Pokemon who, apparently, can be different types now. I learned there's a Pokemon who is fire and a water type Robert Frost comes to mind.
I actually think I did okay managing them and by managing them I mean the church (it's summer camp) didn't burn down
Met a REALLY cool lady who used to do IT at Delaware
Also got crowned as an honorary
#actually not too hard of a day's work but from now on I am doing the OPPOSITE of what I thought I'd do#and try to avoid the high schoolers unless I NEED that money#I'd rather do something below my pay grade that doesn't involve teen angst and actually the kids are adorable#the nice thing about this subbing gig is that the app shows you what jobs are available#and YOU apply to them#you are not ASSIGNED#they can REQUEST a sub but no one MAKES you go#the downside: you REALLY have to be on top of it and be prepared to get notifications from the app at 4 in the morning for jobs you can't#make/aren't qualified for (like 4th grade math...those 4th graders are better at math than I am)#the upside is that I can kinda keep it on the side if/when I hopefully find something better but it's still there#lior liveblogs the grind

Going through a straight up comical amount of irritating situations to get the stupid 4* guaranteed ticket from the welcome to sekai campaign. It Will Be Mine.
#I’m resuming this tomorrow it’s been hours now I’m just mad#I’m home because my parents are moving to a different state and I needed to pack whatever was left#and for some reason we just keep old devices when we’re done with them#so I borrow an adapter to allow me to connect my ancient unworking iPad mini to my laptop#factory reset it. i have to reset an old email to access the old Apple id to fully reset it.#it won’t connect to the wifi so I have to reset the settings. i find out it’s too old to run pjsk.#i find an old phone that should work. i reset it as well. I’m able to download pjsk & it takes 20 minutes.#pjsk crashes everytime I try to open it. i attempt to run bluestacks on my computer. bluestacks doesn’t have 64 bit for mac yet.#i get a free trial of parallels and download windows onto my laptop. this takes 40 minutes.#i try to download and run bluestacks on that. m1 macs apparently can’t run bluestacks 64 bit through parallels.#i go find the final old phone that I had forgotten about. it takes forever to charge because the charging port is fucked up. i reset it as#well. it can’t connect to wifi. i try a hotspot on my current phone. service is too awful. i try to do wifi sharing from my laptop.#you have to be connected to the router via a cable for that to work.#at this point it has been like 3 hours. I’m giving up because I’ve been down this route before#when I attempted to run 32 bit steam games on m1 mac#(wine64 doesn’t exist for m1 macs yet -> attempt to run boot camp -> boot camp isn’t a thing anymore on Apple silicon -> attempt to run#several different programs that allow me to run windows on a mac. none of them work. ->#look into linux & give up. -> attempt to implement the unfinished/unbottled wine64 code thru terminal. ->#fuck up and delete some important file & have to fix that (misery inducing) -> keep trying. i think I downloaded a Mac coding program at#some point? i realize I have zero coding knowledge and this is a mistake. -> give up and purchase crossover. game doesn’t even work. ->#3 months later update to the latest OS so I can have enough storage to play psychonauts 2. find out the $60 crossover#purchase was a bad idea because ‘heehee crossover doesn’t work on that buy the new version’ (fuck crossover).#my toxic trait is my belief that I can figure out anything via google and sheer stubbornness. usually this is true. occasionally there are#exceptions to this rule. most of them are because owning Apple products is a mistake.#i think if I reset the router tomorrow I can solve this problem but I can also just go elsewhere with better service or wait until I’m home#now it’s a matter of pride. and also free 4*/I have nothing better to do because I’m stuck here until Tuesday.#<- this is all normal behavior by the way. who doesn’t spend 8 hours ramming their head against a problem every once and a while. enrichment#mine#oh I forgot. i also looked into cloning the app but that would cost money for something that might not even work.#‘just log out and make an alt’ and risk losing my account? I’m stupid enough to overwrite it on accident.

so yea running servers isnt like a cheap thing is what ive been learning these past couple weeks
#fair warning this is me just like going off new knowledge so i could be getting things wrong#buying an actual server isnt really that expensive itself! the issue is like actually running it and when you have actual ppl on said serve#thats where costs start racking up#theres different ways to go about handling a server but mainly what ive been getting from this is:#self hosting (running urself) or managed hosting (having a 3rd party run it for you)#so when ur small or solo u can get away with managed servers cause theyre pretty lowcost or free#and you usually want to go this route if you dont have the skills built up to take care of a server yourself#or if you arent interested in learning cause its pretty time consuming and u have to upkeep it#but they are scary expensive once u get a certain amount of users from what ive seen#its extremely convenient and gives u peace of mind but theres no point using the service if ur making enough money#especially since you wont have as much control of your server if its managed#so at that point just hire people to take care of your own servers you buy#however there are still server costs u need to pay (along with the people u have hired)#im only bringing this up to say that solmare is running ''two'' separate servers for two seperate games (as far as ik)#and probably arent making that much more in profit cause#me as a user...if i have two games that r practically the same on my phone im not spending money on both#its either one or the other#but you still need to pay accordingly to have both of these servers up#like realistically they arent gonna be able to keep both apps running indefinitely#but yea whatever they were saying in the beginning about having both games running and not forgetting about the og#was either a very generous guess or they were just lying#if it were like a nikki game situation where all the games r very different then maybe it would have been feasible#anyways yea sorry i needed an excuse to talk about the website stuff ive been learning!! and obey me is always in the back of my head#im like thinking about this stuff a lot cause for my site i need to have a server and its like okay we r gucci rn#i can stick with managed for now cause im assuming its gonna stay small#but like...theres always that non zero percent chance that it might not be gucci later on lol#so been researching a lot and i just dont wanna run my own server that sounds so boring its not even funny#so yea im just like AHHH

I downloaded a prompt app to practice writing because I have bigger projects I want to do but I’m super rusty and I forgot how much fun it can be and how fun coming up with ideas is!
I also forgot how every 100 words I write feels like running a mile and I get tired so fast lol it’s like the words are pieces of my soul itself and I only have a much of it to give.
Is this a normal thing to feel and does it get better with practice?
#personal#also the app is kinda like a social media thing where writers can share their little stories with the same prompts#you don’t have to if you don’t want to but seeing other people’s stuff is cute! and there aren’t a ton of users#so it feels like a super small community which makes it less scary#it’s cool#it has a paid option but I’m not doing that lol#and you can win money from writing contests and stuff#it’s just called writing prompts- daily in the App Store#and it’s got a purple icon with a P on it if you want to check it out 🥰

“boycotts work” in response to starbucks apparently losing money like… okay work to do what??? what has starbucks done, in response to losing money due to the boycott, to stop materially supporting israel? well. they weren’t materially supporting israel in the first place, were they. like perhaps i missed something in all of this but if i’m not mistaken it started because of them suing union members who posted about supporting palestine? which sucks! but… what is the express goal of boycotting them? punish them for being in support israel? sure! a perfectly good reason not to spend your money at starbucks! there’s PLENTY of good reasons not to give starbucks your money im all for, in general, not financially supporting them. but you can’t say a boycott “worked” if there was no goal in the first place. beyond making them lose money. you’re supposed to make them lose money SO THAT THEY WILL DO SOMETHING. starbucks is not a part of the official bds boycott list! mcdonald’s was added but starbucks still hasn’t been! because again. there is no clear goal. AND YET it’s the most “popular” thing to boycott. bc everyone can feel like they’re participating bc it’s *starbucks* and yeah you’re not buying HP or puma products every day to begin with but not buying your starbucks drink makes you feel like you’re doing something.
#sorry this is a mess idk where to put line breaks#i’m just soooo sick of starbucks starbucks starbucks#FUCK starbucks to be clear if it’s possible to boycott them successfully enough to make a difference that’s a GOOD THING#wish it was being channeled into something more practical#if we can boycott starbucks can we boycott them in protest of their union busting#like not that this isn’t important but a starbucks boycott isn’t going to materially affect things in This Situation#but there are other things starbucks is doing that a boycott with clear goals COULD accomplish#literally this is all related to their anti union practices too#anyway choosing not to spend your money somewhere because you don’t support their views#is a perfectly good thing to do im not saying you should go buy every drink from starbucks#i’m saying what is the POINT of the starbucks boycott and why is it ALL that gets talked about#when everything actually on the bds list gets glossed over#r.txt#similarly i saw a tweet like ‘(brand) is on the bds boycott list’ and i looked it up and it is not#the source was an app that tells you if companies support israel#both materially or in like statements and stuff#AND AGAIN. i also want to try to avoid israeli products when i can#or companies w ties to israel#but that is NOT the same as bds#i hate that i’m mad about this i’m just like okay what do you want starbucks to DO???#it just feels like all it’s done is take focus away from ACTUALL bds boycotts by becoming Thee Boycott

Me with basically half of my friends
the ability to say "i dont have a tiktok" in social situations makes me feel so powerful. like the general reaction is "shock, confusion, then this weird 'thats probably a good thing' response" its so fun
#I kinda appreciate the idea of being able to just have all this power at ur fingertips via 30-second videos and people can make money off it#It’s like YouTube Shorts but worse#But Anywhizzle. Then I remember the legalities behind TikTok and who owns it and how they gain info abt certain ppl and how dangerous it is#And then I just feel this huge wave of relief wash over me when I realize I’m one of the most powerful people in the world for not having#A TikTok account. Like I enjoy watching those TikTok compilations on YouTube because where else am I meant to get my ROTTMNT content???#But actually getting the app is a whole other thing. That shit is dangerous and I’m so glad I don’t have it.#Same with a bunch of other classic social media apps. Staying far away from Twitter and Insta thank you very much.#wordz

“tik tok is brainrot I’m glad it’s getting deleted” YOU are ignoring an early warning sign of fascism bc silly dances and asmr annoys u. tik tok ban is a part of a MUCH bigger bill that indicates any foreign app, if deemed a threat, can be banned if the owner does not sell it. aka the government is mad bc they cannot censor & their capitalist puppet masters are mad they aren’t making money from it. and if ur ok w that……hm

The article is under the cut because paywalls suck
This is an edited transcript of an audio essay on “The Ezra Klein Show.” You can listen to the conversation by following or subscribing to the show on the NYT Audio App, Apple, Spotify, Amazon Music, YouTube, iHeartRadio or wherever you get your podcasts.
If you want to understand the first few weeks of the second Trump administration, you should listen to what Steve Bannon told PBS’s “Frontline” in 2019:
Steve Bannon: The opposition party is the media. And the media can only, because they’re dumb and they’re lazy, they can only focus on one thing at a time. … All we have to do is flood the zone. Every day we hit them with three things. They’ll bite on one, and we’ll get all of our stuff done. Bang, bang, bang. These guys will never — will never be able to recover. But we’ve got to start with muzzle velocity. So it’s got to start, and it’s got to hammer, and it’s got to — Michael Kirk: What was the word? Bannon: Muzzle velocity.
Muzzle velocity. Bannon’s insight here is real. Focus is the fundamental substance of democracy. It is particularly the substance of opposition. People largely learn of what the government is doing through the media — be it mainstream media or social media. If you overwhelm the media — if you give it too many places it needs to look, all at once, if you keep it moving from one thing to the next — no coherent opposition can emerge. It is hard to even think coherently.
Donald Trump’s first two weeks in the White House have followed Bannon’s strategy like a script. The flood is the point. The overwhelm is the point. The message wasn’t in any one executive order or announcement. It was in the cumulative effect of all of them. The sense that this is Trump’s country now. This is his government now. It follows his will. It does what he wants. If Trump tells the state to stop spending money, the money stops. If he says that birthright citizenship is over, it’s over.
Or so he wants you to think. In Trump’s first term, we were told: Don’t normalize him. In his second, the task is different: Don’t believe him.
Trump knows the power of marketing. If you make people believe something is true, you make it likelier that it becomes true. Trump clawed his way back to great wealth by playing a fearsome billionaire on TV; he remade himself as a winner by refusing to admit he had ever lost. The American presidency is a limited office. But Trump has never wanted to be president, at least not as defined in Article II of the U.S. Constitution. He has always wanted to be king. His plan this time is to first play king on TV. If we believe he is already king, we will be likelier to let him govern as a king.
Don’t believe him. Trump has real powers — but they are the powers of the presidency. The pardon power is vast and unrestricted, and so he could pardon the Jan. 6 rioters. Federal security protection is under the discretion of the executive branch, and so he could remove it from Anthony Fauci and Mike Pompeo and John Bolton and Mark Milley and even Brian Hook, a largely unknown former State Department official under threat from Iran who donated time to Trump’s transition team. It was an act of astonishing cruelty and callousness from a man who nearly died by an assassin’s bullet — as much as anything ever has been, this, to me, was an X-ray of the smallness of Trump’s soul — but it was an act that was within his power.
But the president cannot rewrite the Constitution. Within days, the birthright citizenship order was frozen by a judge — a Reagan appointee — who told Trump’s lawyers, “I have difficulty understanding how a member of the bar would state unequivocally that this is a constitutional order. It just boggles my mind.” A judge froze the spending freeze before it was even scheduled to go into effect, and shortly thereafter, the Trump administration rescinded the order, in part to avoid the court case.
What Bannon wanted — what the Trump administration wants — is to keep everything moving fast. Muzzle velocity, remember. If you’re always consumed by the next outrage, you can’t look closely at the last one. The impression of Trump’s power remains; the fact that he keeps stepping on rakes is missed. The projection of strength obscures the reality of weakness. Don’t believe him.
You could see this a few ways: Is Trump playing a part, making a bet or triggering a crisis? Those are the options. I am not certain he knows the answer. Trump has always been an improviser. But if you take it as calculated, here is the calculation: Perhaps this Supreme Court, stocked with his appointees, gives him powers no peacetime president has ever possessed. Perhaps all of this becomes legal now that he has asserted its legality. It is not impossible to imagine that bet paying off.
But Trump’s odds are bad. So what if the bet fails and his arrogations of power are soundly rejected by the courts? Then comes the question of constitutional crisis: Does he ignore the court’s ruling? To do that would be to attempt a coup. I wonder if they have the stomach for it. The withdrawal of the Office of Management and Budget’s order to freeze spending suggests they don’t. Bravado aside, Trump’s political capital is thin. Both in his first and second terms, he has entered office with approval ratings below that of any president in the modern era. Gallup has Trump’s approval rating at 47 percent — about 10 points beneath Joe Biden’s in January 2021.
There is a reason Trump is doing all of this through executive orders rather than submitting these same directives as legislation to pass through Congress. A more powerful executive could persuade Congress to eliminate the spending he opposes or reform the civil service to give himself the powers of hiring and firing that he seeks. To write these changes into legislation would make them more durable and allow him to argue their merits in a more strategic way. Even if Trump’s aim is to bring the civil service to heel — to rid it of his opponents and turn it to his own ends — he would be better off arguing that he is simply trying to bring the high-performance management culture of Silicon Valley to the federal government. You never want a power grab to look like a power grab.
But Republicans have a three-seat edge in the House and a 53-seat majority in the Senate. Trump has done nothing to reach out to Democrats. If Trump tried to pass this agenda as legislation, it would most likely fail in the House, and it would certainly die before the filibuster in the Senate. And that would make Trump look weak. Trump does not want to look weak. He remembers John McCain humiliating him in his first term by casting the deciding vote against Obamacare repeal.
That is the tension at the heart of Trump’s whole strategy: Trump is acting like a king because he is too weak to govern like a president. He is trying to substitute perception for reality. He is hoping that perception then becomes reality. That can only happen if we believe him.
The flurry of activity is meant to suggest the existence of a plan. The Trump team wants it known that they’re ready this time. They will control events rather than be controlled by them. The closer you look, the less true that seems. They are scrambling and flailing already. They are leaking against one another already. We’ve learned, already, that the O.M.B. directive was drafted, reportedly, without the input or oversight of key Trump officials — “it didn’t go through the proper approval process,” an administration official told The Washington Post. For this to be the process and product of a signature initiative in the second week of a president’s second term is embarrassing.
But it’s not just the O.M.B. directive. The Trump administration is waging an immediate war on the bureaucracy, trying to replace the “deep state” it believes hampered it in the first term. A big part of this project seems to have been outsourced to Elon Musk, who is bringing the tactics he used at Twitter to the federal government. He has longtime aides at the Office of Personnel Management, and the email sent to nearly all federal employees even reused the subject line of the email he sent to Twitter employees: “Fork in the Road.” Musk wants you to know it was him.
The email offers millions of civil servants a backdoor buyout: Agree to resign and in theory, at least, you can collect your paycheck and benefits until the end of September without doing any work. The Department of Government Efficiency account on X described it this way: “Take the vacation you always wanted, or just watch movies and chill, while receiving your full government pay and benefits.” The Washington Post reported that the email “blindsided” many in the Trump administration who would normally have consulted on a notice like that.
I suspect Musk thinks of the federal work force as a huge mass of woke ideologues. But most federal workers have very little to do with politics. About 16 percent of the federal work force is in health care. These are, for instance, nurses and doctors who work for the Veterans Affairs department. How many of them does Musk want to lose? What plans does the V.A. have for attracting and training their replacements? How quickly can he do it?
The Social Security Administration has more than 59,000 employees. Does Musk know which ones are essential to operations and unusually difficult to replace? One likely outcome of this scheme is that a lot of talented people who work in nonpolitical jobs and could make more elsewhere take the lengthy vacation and leave government services in tatters. Twitter worked poorly after Musk’s takeover, with more frequent outages and bugs, but its outages are not a national scandal. When V.A. health care degrades, it is. To have sprung this attack on the civil service so loudly and publicly and brazenly is to be assured of the blame if anything goes wrong.
What Trump wants you to see in all this activity is command. What is really in all this activity is chaos. They do not have some secret reservoir of focus and attention the rest of us do not. They have convinced themselves that speed and force is a strategy unto itself — that it is, in a sense, a replacement for a real strategy. Don’t believe them.
I had a conversation a couple months ago with someone who knows how the federal government works about as well as anyone alive. I asked him what would worry him most if he saw Trump doing it. What he told me is that he would worry most if Trump went slowly. If he began his term by doing things that made him more popular and made his opposition weaker and more confused. If he tried to build strength for the midterms while slowly expanding his powers and chipping away at the deep state where it was weakest.
But he didn’t. And so the opposition to Trump, which seemed so listless after the election, is beginning to rouse itself.
There is a subreddit for federal employees where one of the top posts reads: “This non ‘buyout’ really seems to have backfired. I’ll be honest, before that email went out, I was looking for any way to get out of this fresh hell. But now I am fired up to make these goons as frustrated as possible.” As I write this, it’s been upvoted more than 39,000 times and civil servant after civil servant is echoing the initial sentiment.
In Iowa this week, Democrats flipped a State Senate seat in a district that Trump won easily in 2024. The attempted spending freeze gave Democrats their voice back, as they zeroed in on the popular programs Trump had imperiled. Trump isn’t building support; he’s losing it. Trump isn’t fracturing his opposition; he’s uniting it.
This is the weakness of the strategy that Bannon proposed and Trump is following. It is a strategy that forces you into overreach. To keep the zone flooded, you have to keep acting, keep moving, keep creating new cycles of outrage or fear. You overwhelm yourself. And there’s only so much you can do through executive orders. Soon enough, you have to go beyond what you can actually do. And when you do that, you either trigger a constitutional crisis or you reveal your own weakness.
Trump may not see his own fork in the road coming. He may believe he has the power he is claiming. That would be a mistake on his part — a self-deception that could doom his presidency. But the real threat is if he persuades the rest of us to believe he has power he does not have.
The first two weeks of Trump’s presidency have not shown his strength. He is trying to overwhelm you. He is trying to keep you off-balance. He is trying to persuade you of something that isn’t true. Don’t believe him.

So, Discord has added a feature that lets other people "enhance" or "edit" your images with different AI apps. It looks like this:
Currently, you can't opt out from this at all. But here's few things you can do as a protest.
FOR SERVERS YOU ARE AN ADMIN IN
Go to Roles -> @/everyone roles -> Scroll all the way down to External Apps, and disable it. This won't delete the option, but it will make people receive a private message instead when they use it, protecting your users:
You should also make it a bannable offense to edit other user's images with AI. Here's how I worded it in my server, feel free to copypaste:
Do not modify other people's images with AI under ANY circumstances, such as with the Discord "enhancement" features, amidst others. This is a bannable offense.
COMPLAIN TO DISCORD
There's few ways to go around this. First, you can go to https://support.discord.com/hc/en-us/requests/new , select Help and Support -> Feedback/New Feature Request, and write your message, as seen in the screenshot below.
For the message, here's some points you can bring up:
Concerns about harassment (such as people using this feature to bully others)
Concerns about privacy (concerns on how External Apps may break privacy or handle the data in the images, and how it may break some legislations, such as GDPR)
Concerns about how this may impact minors (these features could be used with pictures of irl minors shared in servers, for deeply nefarious purposes)
BE VERY CLEAR about "I will refuse to buy Nitro and will cancel my subscription if this feature remains as it is", since they only care about fucking money
Word them as you'd like, add onto them as you need. They sometimes filter messages that are copypasted templates, so finding ways to word them on your own is helpful.
ADDING: You WILL NEED to reply to the mail you receive afterwards for the message to get sent to an actual human! Otherwise it won't reach anyone
UNSUSCRIBE FROM NITRO
This is what they care about the most. Unsuscribe from Nitro. Tell them why you unsuscribed on the way out. DO NOT GIVE THEM MONEY. They're a company. They take actions for profit. If these actions do not get them profit, they will need to backtrack. Mass-unsuscribing from WOTC's DnD beyond forced them to back down with the OGL, this works.
LEAVE A ONE-STAR REVIEW ON THE APP
This impacts their visibility on the App store. Write why are you leaving the one-star review too.
_
Regardless of your stance on AI, I think we can agree that having no way for users to opt out of these pictures is deeply concerning, specially when Discord is often used to share selfies. It's also a good time to remember internet privacy and safety- Maybe don't post your photos in big open public servers, if you don't want to risk people doing edits or modifications of them with AI (or any other way). Once it's posted, it's out of your control.
Anyways, please reblog for visibility- This is a deeply concerning topic!

The main feature apps like this offer are QOL improvements like different layouts, fonts, reading statistics and timers, and the aforementioned download features that are already a part of Ao3.
And if you want to use an app for those features -- honestly, I don't see why not? But be aware that Ao3 supports user-created skins that can look like literally anything you want (and although you do have to know enough CSS to make a theme yourself, lots of fans out there make AO3 skins just for fun -- you just gotta talk to one of them to ask how to make the changes you'd prefer and most likely they're happy to help out) and there are userscripts that act as site extensions that provide all those features and more (with, again, people actively developing them that you can ask help from to write your own if you don't like any of the ones available)
If you don't want the hassle of finding this stuff out or talking to people to ask for these features, you do you I guess. But don't ever pay money for one of these apps, no matter what it does. If it's showing you adds, if it's asking you to buy it, DO NOT, they're asking you to pay for features other fans have already provided for free through other methods.
WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS

WHO IS USING THIS
AN APP??? THEY HAVE A FUNCTIONING WEBSITE
THE LAST FUNCTIONING WEBSITE
#Like tbh I don't hate the idea of user-made Ao3 apps#But I also think it's not possible to do that on monetised platforms without going against the spirit of Ao3's rules#they don't let you directly link Kofi or Patreon#so an app having a tip button/ads/premium purchase version would also be out of the question for me#But that's me speaking from a place of someone who likes doing dev shit as a hobby#I honestly think that if I went on FD right now I could find a decent Ao3 reader app that *is* operating within the spirit of the rules#I assume there's more than one of us out there but you wouldn't find any of these apps on the damn App Store/ITunes#which have the sole purpose of making money#and making money off of fandom is against the principles of OTW as far as I've understood them#And I do think Ao3 could use some QOL features there in the main interface! I do!#And not all of them are stuff like a dark mode you can do with scrub code!#some of the features I mentioned above *are* pretty complicated to implement#So I see the appeal of apps like these especially for people who don't have a broad community of other fans#who don't maybe even know anyone who does themes or userscripts on the side#Who may not even know all the features of their *browsers* because they've grown up in an app-first ecosystem#(or have shit browsers like Chrome that try to be as app-like as possible)#And the people writing these apps see a niche. Because they see users of Ao3 not knowing how Ao3 works#(and maybe don't know how Ao3 works themselves)#and go “huh there's a need I could fulfill there huh?”#The problem isn't the creation of the tools themselves -- it's the monetisation of them#And I think it would be better to focus on communicating *that*#and not assuming technical competence#Like most people don't even RTFM#and even when they do they might not *know* what some of the things in the manual are#So going “why didn't you just [already implemented feature of Ao3]\[userscript]” means nothing to them#they don't know what a userscript is#They don't know *that* you can DIY this stuff let alone *how* to DIY this stuff#and condescendingly telling them “you should just [do something that is unfamiliar and sounds complicated]”#will only make them thing “okay. But if you're not gonna tell me how then an app someone *already made* for that is easier. So fuck you.”#*handwaves at those last points* to be clear this is not what I think OP or anyone in this thread is saying
