I am one heatwave away from purposely sticking my head in the freezer.

It does not need to be 27°c today. Especially since there’s a thunderstorm warning.

It was -46 yesterday and it's -42 today where I live in Canada

I'd say "Kill me now" but at these temperatures, Mother Nature is already doing her best.

The schools in my area closed not because of too much snowfall but because of the extreme cold.

Even my coworker's huskie thinks it's too cold, and they're obsessed with rolling in snow.

Hey guys!! I’m pretty sure the majority of you are from mainland America so you don’t have the opportunity to see the northern lights, like, ever. Tonight you can!! Possibly. There’s a pretty severe geomagnetic storm going on and it’ll be hitting pretty darn south and a whole crap ton of people that have never seen northern lights, might be able to see them!!

I highly encourage everyone in the red/yellow lines to try to take a look tonight! I grew up with northern lights literally in my backyard and they’re just such a pleasant sight to see. According to the weather network it’ll go down as far as Alabama!

the smoke from the wildfires in canada are crossing the atlantic and is now bringing a haze to the nordic countries

it's said that the soot from the smoke will deposit onto the snow and ice of the arctic which will in turn increase local warming (i.e worst wildfires, ice sheets melting, oceans warming and rising, stronger tropical cyclones, etc. etc.)

Ways to Help

The Canadian Red Cross: Every $1 donated to the Canadian Red Cross will become $3 to support those affected by wildfires. The funds will be directed to people living in Nova Scotia and other Atlantic provinces, some of the hardest hit areas, for immediate and ongoing relief and recovery efforts as well as community preparedness initiatives.

United Way: The Canadian federal government joined the government of the Northwest Territories in a similar matching program to support disaster relief and recovery efforts. The funds will be used to support nonprofit community groups who are helping local residents.

Donate a Mask: This volunteer-run charity ships free N95-equivalent masks to anyone in Canada who requests them, with priority to Canadians who cannot afford or do not have access to high-quality masks.

Firefighters Without Borders: This Ontario-based nonprofit donates equipment and training to communities across Canada and in other countries.

Odawa Native Friendship Centre: The Odawa NFC is a nonprofit organization serving the Indigenous community in the Ottawa-Carleton region and is currently collecting donations for First Nation evacuees (with “wildfire evacuees” as the donation type). On Facebook, the NFC noted that it can no longer accept clothing donations.

Helleborus (hellebore, Christmas rose)

It's fast approaching the end of hellebore season and, as the common name Christmas rose implies, this is another cheerful winter-blooming flower. The hellebores have had a tough time in Vancouver this year. After a very mild winter, on January 12 the temperature suddenly fell to - 14.4 C (6 F) followed by more than 30 cm (1 ft) of snow. All the snow melted and three days later it was gone but the damage was already done.

Believe me, the local plants did not enjoy this 'extreme weather event'. We have brown foliage and heavy leaf drops all over town. Laurels and rhododendrons have been particularly hard hit and provincial grape vines will produce no fruit this year. Considering all this bad news the hellebores have done surprisingly well. Not to worry, time marches on and spring is well under way. Next stop, daffodil season. I can hardly wait!

i learned that in 1947, the Canadian town of Snag, Yukon, saw a temperature of -83F (-64C). It was so cold, you could hear people speaking 4 miles away, along with other phenomena such as people's breath turning to powder and falling straight to the ground and river ice booming like gun shots (x)

Impassable winter roads are delaying vital shipments and threatening the safety of First Nations across northern Ontario, leaders warned as they pressed the provincial and federal government for support. An unseasonably warm winter, intensified by human-caused climate change, has left many remote First Nations cut off from an essential road network built over frozen land, lakes and rivers. The situation has prompted recent state of emergency declarations by First Nations in Manitoba and Ontario, as well as repeated requests for support. “It’s becoming more and more dire, and more challenging,” said Grand Chief Alvin Fiddler of the Nishnawbe Aski Nation, an organization of First Nations across northern Ontario.
