the rain finally came and the small creatures came out to soak in the coolness when all it has been is hot and dry.

these small creatures, pests to me and yet i still try not to hit them with my car.

these little pests survived the heat just like me, i shouldn't take their little lives away the moment they find bliss.

i have no right.

uuuh its not the toad’s fault that they exist and they have no logical way of knowing that they’re harming nature on a grand scale. Being needlessly cruel to them and playing “toad golf”? You like torturing animals for fun?

To be clear, that is not something I would do now! At the time, I was like... 7 or 8 years old?

Hatred of toads is ingrained in everyone living in Queensland from a very young age. Some politicians even suggested a 'bounty' for killing canetoads because they are such an insane threat to the Australian eco-system. Almost every adult around me growing up would have something to say about running over them in your car when you drive down the street, on purpose or not. My dad would catch them and put them in a box, and put them in the freezer to kill them humanely. They would just fall asleep in the cold and die without any pain. (My mum fucking hated this, poisonous toads in the freezer)

Cane Toads are a serious SERIOUS pest. They were introduced to kill beetles, but it got out of hand and they cause much more damage than they fix by eating the beetles.

I had friends who would do much more cruel things than the golf thing, which I hated. The golf stuff would kill them quickly. Some more cruel children would use salt, which was horrid.

Also, if it makes you feel any better, An older kid invited my brother and I for some 'golf' with friends, we decided not to go, and then an hour or so later, he was knocking on our door because his friend had accidentally hit him in the face on the backswing and busted his cheek open. My parents put his teeth in some milk and took him to his parents, who drove him to hospital, and he got like 20 stitches in his face.

So, yknow, karma. None of us ever went out for 'golf' ever again.
