There are some extant embroidered tapestries, one of know of is the Bayeux tapestry from England, but many tapestries were actually woven, not embroidered. For example, the Hunt of the Unicorn tapestries are woven, not embroidered. Perhaps you are thinking of needlepoint? That was used to embroider wall hangings, furniture, etc, using canvas as the base cloth. The floss needed to be a fine cloth for the fine details. This is an 18th century needlepoint/canvaswork example I found, I think this may be what you were thinking of?

Also, to improve his skills and expand his stitch knowledge, his wife would probably make him do a sampler before she let him at any of her nice projects. The below is a 15 year old's sampler, you can see the different types of stitches used and honestly, samplers are so dear to me as historical artifacts. I believe the letters are done in needlepoint.

Looking over pastoral canvaswork pictures from the 18th century can lead to a distinct feeling of déjà vu.

One of the more common motifs from these schoolgirl projects was a reclining shepherdess, all taken from the same source illustration but worked in different ways.

Here, you're seeing the work of Ann Gardner, Alice Mather, Temperance Parker, Alethea Stiles, and Esther Stoddard along with other anonymous canvaswork panels presumed to have been worked by other 18th century Boston-area students; click on the images for captions, accession numbers, etc.

Want to embroider your own reclining shepherdess? Erica Wilson’s “Shepherd and Shepherdess Needlepoint Kit” occasionally comes up on eBay (click here to search for it); it's based on the Ann Gardner panel at the Met, I think. (Other panels from related 18th century canvaswork embroideries also come up in 1990s kits from It’s Polite to Point.)

Spirit Of Belarus’ embroidery designs

I am starting to tell about my embroidery and my small company for stitching patterns. In my first post, I need to present myself first ).

I was born in Belarus. In 1999, when I was 40, I immigrated to Canada bringing my old dream along. I had dreamed of stitching. (meant that back home, I  had no opportunities...) 

In 2005, I joined Toronto Guild of Stitchery.  In 2008, I started my small designing company “Spirit of Belarus”. In 2010, I joined Needlework Designers of Canada group.

My work has been published in A Needle Pulling Thread magazine (so far, 19 of my designs have been already published), in Embroidery Canada magazine and displayed at CreativFestival in Toronto. As well, I teach workshops in Belarusan Nizanka techniques at CreativFestival and other places. I have written “Tutorial” in Nizanka. (It can be found for free download on the Internet and on my store).

Two of my pieces have been chosen as a part of the juried Threadworks 2016 Travelling Show.

All of my designs are  based on Belarusan traditional ornamental motifs or on Belarusan iconic images. I try to transform the traditional patterns into modern designs enriched with diverse diverse stitching techniques. I work inndifferent techniques , with different colours, but I still think Belarusan :) 

I hope that in a country rich with the stitching traditions of many nations, needleworkers can now try their needles at stitching a piece inspired by the traditions of Belarusa needlework and to include it in the mosaic of Canadian stitching styles.
