Liveblog: Wakfu Season 1 (episodes 1-9)

NOTE: I will be doing rewatch liveblogs of multiple episodes per post, because the focus of this blog isn't on the Wakfu cast, and I am not as well versed in their characterisations, so I won't even have much analysis to show you. Sorry ^^;;

Episode 1 - The Child from the Mist

I promise not to get sappy, but seeing season 1 after all these years does make me quite emotional. Ah, how the time flies.

Thank god I'm not a Yugo lore blog. I'd have to translate this too, as if I didn't go through enough psychological trauma. 💀

The sheer Bitch Olympics that would happen if Ruel opened a restaurant and you-know-which-three-men entered it, would cause at least 5 casualties.

I need this so bad. You have no idea how much I need this.

Episode 2 - Yugo the Eliatrope

I hang onto every mention of Bonta like a lifeline. I know Ruel might be lying, but imagining him having some marginal connection though like, Ruel's buddies knowing some people who know buddies of Jurgen-Crepins, is making me giddy.

Remember this tree. It will be important later.

Episode 3 - The Black Crow

Guys I think Ruel likes Bonta.

Anyway now I'm imagining the Bitch Olympics that would happen if he tried to haggle with Kerubim. Pangaea would explode.

I like to imagine this is the sort of life that would await Kerubim, had Lou not been smart enough to flee from the relationship.

Episode 4 - The Ugly Pageant

[linguistics major voice] It's just that y'know I really wonder what Ecaflip tongue is like and and. Personally, I think Joris is fluent in Ecaflip tongue, but can be a bit rusty at reading and writing it, while—— [I am forcefully taken off stage by the police]

Episode 5 - The Magnificent Five

One of my life dreams is writing a fic that's set during the Wakfu manga, or shortly after it, with Joris on the ship from the manga, or with the Wakfu cast being quests at his home.

The reason I want to do this, is that political discussions between Evangelyne and Joris would go so hard, whether they agree or disagree. They're both the sort of person who can masterfully turn every innocuous topic to Ogrest's Chaos/Monarchy/Climate Change/War. That, and I am a big believer in Evanglelyne&Joris&Amalia friendship (since Amalia and Eva probably had known him as kids, due to politics.)

Episode 6 - Vampyro

I think everyone who wears an enchanted cape to look cooler is a bit of a try-hard edgelord. Sorry not sorry, but this applies to Julith as well.

Episode 7 - Poisonous Beauty

[approaches mic yet again, more haggard, obviously beaten] Rabies confirmed to exist in Krosmoz.

Episode 8 - Xav the Baker

This moment is so important to me. You have no idea how important it is. Yugo and Eva both know that there's not much that he can do to bribe her. And its hilarious.

[puts on tinfoil hat] We know that Chtibrout Town and Xav the Baker are in Amakna. This means that this town is very famous for its baking — enough for a foreign king to be interested, and for a person from Bonta to come to compete here.

That, or this line of thinking is just a sign of my declining mental state.

Episode 9 - Ruel's Bag

i said i won't liveblog and i mean it but i do have to say a few things though about revisiting pla after having finally familiarized myself with the original media-

•laventon’s theme gives me hearthome city theme vibes. i think the opening rhythm is the same. it's weird for that to be his theme out of anything but my musically trained ear does not lie to me

•i’m kind of amazed someone else had to point out to me how the obsidian fieldlands/prelude beach cutscene theme is twinleaf town with an altered rhythm. i mean granted i didn’t pay that much attention to twinleaf town but like the obsidian fieldlands theme is one of my favorite songs i should have been listening close for it

•edit- i think obsidian fieldlands also references sandgem town a tiny bit? possibly canalave city? it's small enough to be coincidental but it would make sense geographically

•tons of name references. canala avenue. floaro gardens. sandgem flats. veilstone cape. spring path. wayward cave. celestica ruins. solaceon ruins. etc

•so at what point in time did cyllene/her descendants overthrow kamado/his descendants in the galaxy team’s rankings. lol

•galaxy hall theme is rowan’s lab theme! seriously uh. when did the rift between these families start

•i noticed right away while playing platinum… but the celestica flute tone, azure flute tone, and galaxy team rank-up jingle all reference the music from the opening movie for dppt! it was like overwhelming to get hit with all those at once for me when booting up my ds lemme tell you

here’s another tma liveblogging post of sorts (i have listened up to episode 25, a growing dark) that i’m making Purely because language spotting is a sort of hobby of mine??? just as a norwegian/czech person who’s travelled a lot around europe and has worked mainly at hotel/camping spot/tourist stop kinda places, i think i’ve gotten pretty good at recognizing european names and languages based on Vibes. i can’t say a lot about sumerian or latin and stuff but i always perk up when media mentions something being norwegian or czech hahahah ANYWAY - jurgen leitner. people keep pointing out this name “sounds scandinavian” which like, fair enough, i can 100% imagine some guy named jørgen leitner or løytner or something in norway, i can imagine jurgen as an anglicization of jørgen because Ø is a menace, but the way everyone pronouns it my first thought would be Definitely German or German Adjacent. but like hey, germanic language, and i know english pronounciation was gonna butcher it anyway. this isn’t a complaint, just me finding it odd that they went to ‘huh, must be norwegian’ without even mentioning german. (my tma fandom correspondent has already let me know the name jurgen was found on a site with inaccurate norwegian baby names) - ivo lensik. afaik the name was mentioned to be polish or czech, which checks out (haha). i’m pretty sure i know an ivo or at least an ivoš. i can’t speak for polish, but i get  a very strong feeling that if the last name is czech, it should be lesník, since lensik just sounds like nonsense. surnames definitely can get warped a lot across changes and languages, so like. sure. - ny-ålesund. it was very conveniently heard as part of a chanting/song in a dark and seemingly abandoned church, which is honestly very funny (that episode was very cool though. the concept of a church that only exists in complete darkness? mwah chef’s kiss). during the post-statement i thought “oh hey sounds like how english people would pronounce ålesund” right before it was revealed to be the name of “the northernmost settlement on earth at 78 degrees latitude” and “small town in norway”. and THEN i thought WAIT HANG ON *i* come from the northernmost part of norway, and i know for a fact the north cape is at 71 degrees (we have a whole tv show named after it). ny-ålesund DOES exist though, but it’s on svalbard! so it’s a norwegian town by TECHNICALITY, but it’s a strange thing to refer to it as (but maybe not if you’re an englishman trying to figure out what it might be and don’t care about its cultural context). i will say that it very definitely gets very super dark out there. also on the scale of how media use ‘random norwegian places’ it’s VASTLY better than ‘dårlig ulv stranden’ from doctor who, which is terrible in every way and doesn’t even exist. anyway these things always pause my suspencion of disbelief a little bit, but mostly in a fun way. i’m still enjoying the show and i enjoy hearing about all the statements from the perspective of nurses, trash collectors (TEETH BAG TEETH BAG TEETH BAG) and a wide variety of people, which feel otherwise very real to me.

Girl Genius Liveblog #207

UPDATE 207: Image Gallery

Last time Agatha and her merry band finally arrived to Paris! Where it turns out she’s some kind of celebrity, with a ton of merchandise to her name. That was to be expected of a Heterodyne, really. So how shall this go? Let’s see.

But before that, last update ended with Wulfenbach getting notified two of his agents have gotten injured, and was now going to collect information. Let’s see...a town has been completely wasped, meaning they’re under Lucrezia’s control. What town will it be, I wonder...and could any of the agents sent to check the place have gotten wasped? It’s not unlikely, this guy who got injured may be a liability if he’s under the Other’s control.

It had all started as an investigation regarding some stolen technology from Mechanisburg, and it led to that town, where they found the old-style zombie revenants that were mentioned in the Heterodyne stories. If I’m understanding this correctly, the purpose of those ones was to infect the town, and once everyone was infected with wasps that turned them into revenants that aren’t zombies, the zombies left. So...the two varieties of wasps are being used. I wonder if that fits the Other’s modus operandi, if she in the past also sent hordes of zombies into towns to infect everyone. If not, maybe it’s not her, it could be someone who got their hands on her technology. Possibly this Queen of the Dawn figure, since she has people eating from the palm of her hand, but yeah, that’s only if it turns out the Other’s not the one to blame for that town’s situation.

Good thing a wasp nest was brought here! Gil should make them study it to find out more.

Ah, so the wasps have been improved, they’re now smaller and therefore it’s easier for them to infect someone. No more shoving a wasp the size of someone’s hand into somebody’s mouth. That’s pretty alarming, some of those small slaver wasps may have escaped. Personally I’m worried.

This makes Gil wonder, though. If the Other is back, why hasn’t she improved her technology? I’d have thought making them smaller and more effective counted, but apparently not. Then I’m embarrassed when it’s revealed that wasn’t Lucrezia’s work, someone else did it. I suppose neither Anevka nor Zola have much time for improving the wasps, and I’m not even sure the latter would be interested in that, since I don’t think she’s a spark, she just has the Other’s knowledge and mind under her control.

The possibility Gil raises is that the Other may be directing others and telling them what to do, unable to do it herself. Hm...that’s a possibility, indeed. I remember how, like seven million years ago, the Other in Agatha’s body was showing Tarvek some of her tech and teaching him a few things. Maybe it’s like that.

Also, the Queen of the Dawn was mentioned again. Maybe she’ll turn out to be a major player, alright.

What Gil’s worried about is that Lucrezia managed to set something in motion pretty quickly while she was controlling Agatha. That’s exactly what happened, yup, just that it was sooner than Gil expected.

Okay, with that dramatic line there’s a scene change into absolutely nothingness in terms of main plot, because it’s time for an interlude!

Jagers playing poker. That’s kind of a small poker table, the six of them barely fit. This is meant to be a wallpaper for the desktop. I’d download it, but something went wrong during a Windows update and my wallpaper is gone, and I have been too lazy and/or busy to check how to fix the wallpaper function, welp. Let me just bookmark this heeeere...

Agatha seriously needs to get her hands on some sweet royalties for the use of her image. Do lawyers exist in the Girl Genius world? Somehow I don’t think they do, so she’ll have to handle it herself. Death rays are kind of good negotiation tactics in this world, I bet.

So, what’s going on is that Ms. Kaja Foglio got pretty injured, and there’ll also be some conventions, and Mr. Phil Foglio is taking the chance to do some poster designs. These designs would also be sold at conventions as prints. I won’t lie, this tea poster and the chocolate one are pretty good poster designs. Are they in the store? I sure hope they are, and if so, I’ll greatly consider acquiring some to hang around.

I’m pretty sure that’s unsafe in a few ways. I consider myself lucky I have never been close to molten iron, but getting burned by that has to be pretty awful. Agatha, stop posing sexily and step away, for the love of MAD SCIENCE. The railing barely reaches your calves, you’re gonna trip.

I love the design in the inside of the cape. So, there’s this cryogenic chamber, it seems. Nice. That could come useful, maybe. What’s on Agatha’s head, is that required for the cryogenic chamber? Either way, the design of the poster itself is fine. What I’m not sure about is the color scheme. It’s mostly personal taste, I admit, it’s a tad too pale for my tastes. Would blend on my stark white apartment walls.

Now this one would look much better. Great! Awesome. That aside, I notice it says ‘autumn’. That means the other two were supposed to have seasons on the top area? I checked back and they don’t have any. Disgrace! That aside, this is a good print and I’d acquire it, I’ll say.

This one too. Now that I think about it, it’d be a bit of a shame not to have the entire set, all placed side to side. Ah...the thing is, without the first two having the season on top, the unity is broken. That’s the only issue I have. I wonder how large the prints would be, anyway?

There also was a deck of cards with the Jagers, I see. A boardgame, too.

Hah! Phil Foglio truly looks like a professor, neat. He also draws on bananas.

The Foglios seem like a fun pair, heh. Either way, back to the story.

The cake break is interrupted when a spark in a clank bursts into the shop, telling Agatha to come along quietly. Needless to say that’s not going to happen, no? The guy laughs at Agatha because she supposedly only has a large cake, and I wouldn’t underestimate it because, well, Agatha is clever and I bet she’d be able to use a cake to her advantage. She doesn’t get to do anything because some guy named Hoffman leaps forward to hit the clank with a hammer.

It’s not just a hammer, it saves kinetic energy and releases it when he wants to! And so he does. He gets ready to release it, and the results are explosive.

But it must have worked, no? The guy can’t have survived this. Agatha should be safe.

Worm Liveblog: Arc 17

We.... have jumped the shark? 

So this is obviously another between-story-arc arc, like arc 9 was. In a published version of Worm, this would probably be the cold opening for the third book. And uh... wow does it introduce some new stuff.

So the intro to The Travelers is great. Trying to figure out what they mean by their “team” was fun, since its obviously a bait and switch and not yet a superhero team, but instead of some kind of regular sports team it turns out to be an Esports team. Which sets Worm as a very contemporary story, probably the first I’ve seen to use Esports for something plot important. It establishes how they know eachother and how they know to work as a team, awesome.

And then all shit breaks loose and we get a look at the last Endbringer: the Simurgh. And she is really crazy with her precog stuff. I like the idea of setting off the butterfly effect to cause long-term mayhem while having to contest that with other precogs, and the way the government reacted to that with the quarantine is really grounded to reality, making a power like that still suitable for the more realistic Worm universe.

Which I guess is really the Worm universe...

So the two Earths was explained: the “other Earth” that Cauldron uses to hide in, is actually much closer to our own Earth (Earth Alpha), just with a small amount of parahumans. And the Worm Earth (Earth Beta) is the one with thousands of capes causing mayhem. And this seems like a huge jump in the logic of the story, mostly because its explained as if its common knowledge: every average citizien fully knows about the two earths and can look up stuff on it on like, wikipedia. And its just never ever come up before in conversation before this other than with Cauldron.

I’m sure this warrants a reread. I’m sure there’s been hints. They mention that Earth Bet doesn’t have dollar bills, but has more dollar coins, and no pennies. Surely that’s been placed somewhere so casually that even I glanced over it. There’s been pop culture references: Star Wars, Lazy Town, Portal 2, but I’m sure there’s more references that don’t make sense or are a little off. There’s all kinds of fun ways to allude to this twist that are fun to look back on later.

And that’s the main point of this arc. The other stuff is mostly character related: explaining why Trickster and Ballistic are the way they are, and how fucked up Noelle is. And it gives the Travelers a fun gimmick in being from Earth Alph. So like most of the Interlude-like chapters, it takes some characters I didn’t care about before and now make me care about them so much that it sucks they won’t get much more time in the spotlight (like Battery....)

There’s not much to predict here, so I’ll just say that I’m looking forward to the fight against monster-form Noelle and how they’ll take advantage of the clone powers, basically a way for the capes to fight shadow versions of themselves a la Zelda or Scott Pilgrim. 

NEGA TAYLOR has entered the battlefield!

And then NEGA TATTLETALE spawns in but instantly explodes because she gets all the knowledge of the universe and its too much.

Actually, I want to see clone-tattletale turn good because she’s just that smart and she’s just a normal team member now and lisa-selfcest happens

I completely understand why people like Elliot so much in Stardew Valley. He’s just got such a vibe about him… serene, kind man who lives in his unassuming cottage by the sea. Who appreciates the small beauties of nature. And who also happens to be pretty attractive to boot?

I am wooing this man we keep bumping into each other around town and having our little meet-cutes… I gave him flowers and some fruit from my farm and he loved both. This game is so wholesome.

“Guys are dealt with but… I’m going to do the rest of my night’s patrol alone.”

“Sorry.  I should’ve warned you.  Tends to be easier to work around her.”

Heh, sounds about right.

I remember (mainly because I reread parts of it during last chapter’s liveblog) in Interlude 3, someone (Aegis?) mentioned having deliberately kept Shadow Stalker out of the bank robbery battle.

So she’s always like that.

Yep. Even out of costume.

“This is unfamiliar territory for me. I might need you to brief me if I run into a cape, so I know what I’m potentially running into.”

“Of course, I’m not going anywhere.”

Sounds good.

“And on that subject, I remember meeting someone when I was in town for the attack.  What can you tell me about the cape with the stuffed animals?  Pariah, par-”

“Parian,” Kid Win replied.

Heh, nice. I like the idea of Flechette and Parian getting along, one needle gal to another.

“A parian doll was a kind of doll about a hundred and fifty years ago.  Though Parian’s costume is actually closer to a more classical Victorian style porcelain doll, from the same era.”

Nice. I don’t think a history lesson is what Flechette wanted, but I appreciate it.

Is Kid Win reading this from somewhere, or does he just happen to know stuff about historical dolls?

Maybe Parian explained it to him herself.

hahaha what a rough 13 hours for all my friends. i’m pretty sure the only reason i managed to avoid that spoiler was because i was at that haunted music festival i go to every year in the middle of a forest in america!! 

i think i’m still going to watch the new season but tentatively and with heaviness in my heart :(
