'What would “Ripley” be without its transfixing style, from the palpable isolation of a squalid New York apartment to the shadowy charms of ancient Italian streets?

Writer-director Steven Zaillian’s acclaimed eight-hour Netflix series isn’t merely a new adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s enduring thriller about an American tourist in coastal southern Italy embracing deceit and murder: It’s a coolly gorgeous black-and-white pleasure bath of sights, shades and textures. Beauty with darkness. Modern touches in ancient spaces. Art for con artist’s sake.

To achieve his vision of a 1960s Italy that would sweep viewers away right along with Andrew Scott’s dangerously impressionable protagonist, Zaillian assembled a murderer’s row (ahem) of design collaborators: Oscar-winning cinematographer Robert Elswit, who’d worked with the director on the miniseries “The Night Of”; production designer David Gropman, an alum of Zaillian’s 1993 film “Searching for Bobby Fischer”; and Italian costume designers Maurizio Millenotti and Gianni Casalnuovo.

Elswit makes no bones about how important everyone’s set contributions were to the look and feel of “Ripley.” “It was such a clear ensemble of decisions based on Steve’s original ideas that we pursued for the whole [show],” he says. “We wanted to underlie the drama, be part of the storytelling, part of the emotional life of it.”

The production design

“A dream job” is how Gropman describes working on “Ripley,” starting with what Zaillian’s 400 dialogue-sparse script pages evoked, and ending with myriad locations across New York, Italy and at Rome’s fabled Cinecitta studios.

Early research led Gropman to the kinds of images that called out to be re-created. “When you’re doing Tom on the train from Cherbourg to Naples, and you pull up David Seymour’s photograph of Ingrid Bergman going from Naples to Cannes on the Orient Express, you know exactly what that train car looks like in black and white.” Another inspiring source was Piergiorgio Branzi, revered for his naturalistic postwar pictures of life in Italy. “Any photograph of his would fill a moment in [‘Ripley’].”

Months of scouting the Amalfi coast for the sleepy town holding Dickie Greenleaf’s villa led Gropman to quiet but picturesque Atrani. Three elements cinched it: The views from the road above were stunning, the piazza charmed, and what would become something of a location star for rapt viewers, “the incredible network of stairs, alleys and passageways.” The actual villa, however, was discovered in Capri, and completely outfitted in midcentury furniture and assorted antiques and artwork.

You can get to 200 locations and sets easily when a character is constantly on the move, and the norm is to crib from many places to suggest one. “For the Excelsior hotel in Rome,” says Gropman, “the exterior was the Hassler, the lobby was the Plaza, and two suites were an amazing 16th century palazzo in the middle of Rome.” And where exterior period authenticity couldn’t be counted on, CGI filled out plenty of backgrounds. “Train platforms, views out windows, and ferry docks were all big visual effects set extensions,” Gropman says.

As for what was built at Cinecitta, two favorite sets for Gropman were Tom’s New York hovel and his well-appointed, furnished Rome apartment. For every set, though, walls were never moved for the camera’s sake, “so you’re true to the claustrophobia,” says Gropman, and in the case of the dingy New York SRO, “the meanness of that space.”

Props were nearly as important, and Zaillian spent two days looking at demos. One story item, however — a Murano glass ashtray whose importance won’t be spoiled here — had already been chosen. “The ashtray is on one of Steve’s side tables at home in California,” says Gropman, laughing. “That will tell you a lot about Steve, and his ‘Ripley.’”

The cinematography

“Steve is the most meticulous, focused, precise director you could ever work with,” says Elswit of his “Ripley” writer-director. “He had a very clear concept of shooting in black and white, making a designed movie formally organized around tonal structure and graphic images.”

Elswit, who’s previously worked in black and white (“Good Night and Good Luck”), explains why cinematographers love the monochrome palette. “You can exploit the extremes between the brightest white and the blackest black. You exaggerate the contrast in their faces. You can feel it. Sense it. You really do create tension and anxiety through lighting. It’s been done since the beginning of movies.”

It’s even baked into Zaillian’s script. Ripley’s fascination with Caravaggio allowed the Italian master’s famed tenebrism — intense darkness and pockets of equally intense light — to also become a guiding aesthetic for Elswit. Caravaggio “was also obsessed with quality of light, its direction and the reality of it. Like a spotlight on what was interesting.”

Elswit says Italy’s very physicality lends itself to such extremes of light and shadow. “There’s so much texture when you’re looking at walls, streets, the surfaces of buildings, the cobblestones, stairways. It’s granite, plaster, rock, marble, whatever it is, and in black and white, it emphasizes the texture.”

Caravaggio and his era’s peers influenced the show’s look in another way. Elswit and Zaillian gave themselves an unusual rule in framing, to keep Renaissance and Baroque art’s straight-ahead perspective and avoid converging vertical lines, as would happen if a camera tilted up or down. It’s why so much of “Ripley” is a crisply edited procession of static shots, with only humans providing movement.

“That was built into every setup, indoors and out,” Elswit says. “We were going to have the picture plane parallel to the walls of structures we were shooting, always. The buildings couldn’t have converging lines. Steven wanted that formal graphic design.”

Zaillian also preferred overcast days, to avoid any sun-kissed hint of romance and warmth. But Elswit made great portentous use of a hot sky for when Ripley first encounters Dickie and Marge, lying on the gravel beach. “We had a high shot where we had Tom walk by them, and his shadow goes over them,” Elswit says. “I was thrilled. I’m not sure if Steve was at the time, but he ended up being happy with it. That was a wonderful advantage to a sunlit day!”

The costumes

Italy in the ‘60s may have been a fashion mecca, but that wasn’t how Millenotti and Casalnuovo saw the job Zaillian set out for them. “There was a focus on subtlety,” Casalnuovo wrote via email, speaking for the duo. “The costumes shouldn’t be flashy or distracting. Steve’s vision emphasized creating a sense of character and story through the clothing.”

Casting a wide net in their research — with a little over four months of pre-production time — the pair pored over photo books, archives, even vintage albums found in street markets, “searching for a nuanced understanding of the period,” Casalnuovo says. Their rummaging unearthed one socked-away trove containing unpublished pictures of everyday life in the story’s key cities. “This provided invaluable insight into the social fabric and atmosphere. This allowed us to create costumes steeped in authenticity and narrative depth.”

That meant capturing a moment when the world was turning away from formality, while areas like southern Italy still reflected class divisions. Lighter fabrics such as linen and cotton are presenting themselves, and yet the privilege Dickie Greenleaf (Johnny Flynn) represents hasn’t gone away. “Dickie’s wardrobe would be more tailored and polished. In contrast, characters of lower social standing would wear simpler, more practical clothing.”

With a black-and-white palette, however, certain scenes needed extra consideration, as when Tom Ripley’s swimsuit needed to set him apart at the beach. Highsmith wrote about a garish yellow/black checkered pair of trunks, but, says Casalnuovo, “a color contrast wouldn’t translate.” (As the final decision ultimately showed, an eye-opening fit and pattern humorously did the trick.)

Of course, when it came to Ripley overall, charting his sartorial trajectory, not surprisingly, was the designers’ most enjoyable project. “Ripley’s wardrobe is a chameleon’s act. Initially, his casual American style clashes with Dickie’s European flair. He subtly incorporates elements like polo shirts and loafers, mirroring Dickie to gain acceptance.” Getting from high-priced mimicry to Tom’s own personal style toward the end was a particular challenge, but the kind costume designers live for. “It was a process that demanded focus and a deep understanding of the character, but seeing it all come together was incredibly rewarding.”'

Every Sane Writer: 1920s noir AUs are the best, just glitzy parties and speakeasies everywhere, or maybe the 1940s, after everybody got back from a war…

Me: Might I interest you in... the Great Depression

So obviously I’m writing a pretty stock detective pastiche, but a huge amount of Blood and Blue Diamonds was inspired by something I’m not sure counts as noir or hardboiled: The Day of the Locust, a 1930s novel about a failed artist in Hollywood during the Depression. It’s an amazing book — acerbic and witty and quietly sad — and I highly recommend it, although if you read it you will recognize just how much of its style I’ve badly ripped off.

Jayce’s building was based on the Villa Primavera, an apartment complex built by a husband-and-wife architecture team that worked in LA during the 1920s. The villa was probably the inspiration for the setting of In A Lonely Place, a (likewise absolutely fantastic) classic Humphrey Bogart noir. Let’s just… not think about how my fic’s whole plot is basically “Humphrey Bogart is blorbo now.” The Villa Primavera never ended up a weird decrepit ghost building, but in my defense the LA housing market did flat-out crater during the Depression and sometimes resulted in places being all but abandoned by their owners.

Viktor’s camera is (well, was) a Leica I, a high-end compact design that set the 35mm film standard in the mid-1920s and completely revolutionized photography in the process. The market would get flooded by far cheaper imitations (roughly starting with the Argus), but mainly in the later '30s and '40s, a little after where I’m staking my claim.

Incidentally at one point I had Viktor as a newspaper photographer, but it gave him too much steady work to let him go running around with Jayce, and I liked the dynamic of him being the demimonde foil to Jayce’s relatively upstanding citizen. But it means we don’t get to imagine his gorgeous hands on one of those giant Speed Graphic press cameras.

Jinx’s (spoilers for the unnamed girl who looks exactly like Jinx, I guess) outfit is premised on the popularity of flowing women’s slacks and beach pajamas in ‘30s fashion. As seen on this McCall's cover, beach pajamas could be extremely extra, but think something more along the lines of flared capris.

And finally, before researching this fic I was vaguely familiar with Four Roses as the thing Philip Marlowe drinks in Raymond Chandler novels, but it was also just the most popular whiskey of the period, having survived Prohibition by rebranding as an obviously totally non-recreational, health-promoting medical whiskey company.

Hey! Wikathon na! I’ve started reading Relocations by Karen Tongson, about a third through now, but I had to take a little detour through Harrow the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir like I said I would. I’ve finished reading HtN but I’m not quite done experiencing it, so I’ll probably pick Relocations back up tomorrow.

But here’s what I read in July! What’s a segue?

1. Haikyu!! Volume 44 and 45 by Haruichi Furudate

A chance event triggered Shouyou Hinata’s love for volleyball. His club had no members, but somehow persevered and finally made it into its very first and final regular match of middle school, where it was steamrolled by Tobio Kageyama, a superstar player known as “King of the Court.”

Vowing revenge, Hinata applied to the Karasuno High School volleyball club… only to come face-to-face with his hated rival, Kageyama!

And with those two volumes, Haiky�� has ended. I’m really glad that my cousin got me to catch up to the series because being a part of the sheer joy and love that’s poured out the fandom these past few months has been refreshing to my spirit. I enjoyed the way Furudate brought the series to its conclusion, by giving all the characters a future and room to grow. I hope to hear more from him in the upcoming years.

  2. Looking for Group by Alexis Hall

I read Looking for Group because I was reading up on Alexis Hall in anticipation of Boyfriend Material, which I will talk about later, and saw the synopsis:

So, yeah, I play Heroes of Legend, y’know, the MMO. I’m not like obsessed or addicted or anything. It’s just a game. Anyway, there was this girl in my guild who I really liked because she was funny and nerdy and a great healer. Of course, my mates thought it was hilarious I was into someone I’d met online. And they thought it was even more hilarious when she turned out to be a boy IRL. But the joke’s on them because I still really like him.

And now that we’re together, it’s going pretty well. Except sometimes I think Kit—that’s his name, sorry I didn’t mention that—spends way too much time in HoL. I know he has friends in the guild, but he has me now, and my friends, and everyone knows people you meet online aren’t real. I mean. Not Kit. Kit’s real. Obviously.

Oh, I’m Drew, by the way. This is sort of my story. About how I messed up some stuff and figured out some stuff. And fell in love and stuff.

And I knew that I had to read it. Immediately.

I enjoyed it way too much. The characters were adorable, the conflict was done well, the geeky gamer wrapper was AMAZING and the author never dropped the ball on integrating the online game into the narrative. It was very readable and I enjoyed the atmosphere of the book immensely. I also may have spent a heady week or so thinking of playing WoW, but I avoided that temptation. Made me miss uni too, and the way my friends and I would spend countless hours with each other.

  3. Boyfriend Material by Alexis Hall

Wanted: One (fake) boyfriend Practically perfect in every way

Luc O’Donnell is tangentially–and reluctantly–famous. His rock star parents split when he was young, and the father he’s never met spent the next twenty years cruising in and out of rehab. Now that his dad’s making a comeback, Luc’s back in the public eye, and one compromising photo is enough to ruin everything.

To clean up his image, Luc has to find a nice, normal relationship…and Oliver Blackwood is as nice and normal as they come. He’s a barrister, an ethical vegetarian, and he’s never inspired a moment of scandal in his life. In other words: perfect boyfriend material. Unfortunately apart from being gay, single, and really, really in need of a date for a big event, Luc and Oliver have nothing in common. So they strike a deal to be publicity-friendly (fake) boyfriends until the dust has settled. Then they can go their separate ways and pretend it never happened.

But the thing about fake-dating is that it can feel a lot like real-dating. And that’s when you get used to someone. Start falling for them. Don’t ever want to let them go.

I came into this book with high expectations after Looking for Group, and my expectations were mostly met. The few issues I had were ultimately negligible, probably cultural differences or conventions of a genre that I’m not familiar with. The characters were strong, and I found the book funny. I know it sounds as though I’m damning it with faint praise, so I’ll say it plainly: it was an enjoyable read and I was totally invested in the romance. I think it’ll make a really good film as well.

4. The Subtweet by Vivek Shraya

Everyone talks about falling in love, but falling in friendship can be just as captivating. When Neela Devaki’s song is covered by internet-famous artist Rukmini, the two musicians meet and a transformative friendship begins. But as Rukmini’s star rises and Neela’s stagnates, jealousy and self-doubt creep in. With a single tweet, their friendship implodes, one career is destroyed, and the two women find themselves at the center of an internet firestorm.

Celebrated multidisciplinary artist Vivek Shraya’s second novel is a stirring examination of making art in the modern era, a love letter to brown women, an authentic glimpse into the music industry, and a nuanced exploration of the promise and peril of being seen.

If you’re a millennial and if you’ve ever had complicated friendships, this book will ring really true for most of it, I think. I kept wincing at the characters’ actions and “mistakes”, recognising them as things I or my friends have done, but there are portions of the story that I found inaccessible because Neela, the main character, just seems really opaque even when they’re the ones speaking. The music Shraya made as a companion to the book slaps and can be found here.

  5. Empowered 11 by Adam Warren

Costumed crimefighter Empowered finds herself the desperate prey of a maniacal supervillain whose godlike powers have turned an entire city of suprahumans against her.

Not good! Outnumbered and under siege, aided only by a hero’s ghost, can Emp survive the relentless onslaught long enough to free her enslaved teammates and loved ones, or is this–*gulp*–The End?

From comics overlord Adam Warren comes Empowered, the acclaimed sexy superhero comedy–except when it isn’t, as in this volume’s no-nonsense, wall-to-wall brawl guaranteed to bring tears to the eye and fists to the face!

Warren’s tying up a lot of loose ends and answering a lot of questions and I’m wondering if that means Empowered‘s ending soon. I haven’t seen any info regarding this, even though the words “The End” are right there in the summary, because comic books always lean on the whole the hero could die! thing, and more often than not they never do. But Emp has come so far in the past 11 volumes, and I think that she’s ready to confront a lot of the stuff that Warren’s only hinted at in the past. Most of Empowered is about how Emp deals with failure and how she rises above it, and recently it’s become about how other people have failed her, rather than how she has failed, and how she deserves better. I’m worried about her, but at least we are another volume’s worth of evidence for the Emp/Thugboy/Ninjette OT3.

  6. Sex and Vanity by Kevin Kwan

This was the third romance novel I read in July, and that’s honestly the highest concentration of romance novel I’ve ever had in my life. I know that I’m supposed to find romance novels like super kilig and stuff, but so far I am just very anxious for romance novel protagonists all the time. I think that the whole thing about the romance novels I have read is that they’re mostly about how deeply anxious people learn how to allow themselves to be loved and that is tough! I wanted to protect Lucie all the time! I was Invested in her Welfare, and I don’t think I cared about Rachel Chu from Crazy Rich Asians half as much, even if you condensed all my attachment from the entire trilogy. Also, small spoiler, there is a hint that Sex and Vanity is in the same universe as Crazy Rich Asians, which I think is awesome.

  6. Trust Exercise by Susan Choi

Pulitzer Finalist Susan Choi’s narrative-upending novel about what happens when a first love between high school students is interrupted by the attentions of a charismatic teacher

In an American suburb in the early 1980s, students at a highly competitive performing arts high school struggle and thrive in a rarified bubble, ambitiously pursuing music, movement, Shakespeare, and, particularly, their acting classes. As captivating and tender as it is surprising, Trust Exercise will incite heated conversations about fiction and truth, friendships and loyalties, and will leave readers with wiser understandings of the true capacities of adolescents and of the powers and responsibilities of adults.

This is a book I could not stop reading and I felt gross after I finished it. I think that I enjoyed it and that the narrative flips were well-done and it was engaging, but Choi writes teenage trauma in 3D, and you can smell her scumbag characters. Very good will never read again unless looking to feel bad.

I started re-reading it because I wanted to introduce it to my girlfriend, and I outpaced her very quickly, and selfishly. She’s still at the beginning fourth of Throne of Jade, and I feel like I blinked and gulped down four of the books in quick succession. I had to stop myself after Empire, in a very belated effort to sync up to my gf’s progress. The series is amazing, and I don’t know if I’ll ever read one like Temeraire again. Being able to revisit it should be enough, really, because every time I do it’s as though I’m caught up in a strong and wonderful wind that fills me up with delight and awe. Novik’s starting a new series this September, and I hope it’s just as good.

The Longest Library #2: Cat Raise The Dead by Shirley Rousseau Murphy (AKA cat balls)

This is a series in which I attempt to read and review all (or most of) my library of 297 books.

Rundown: Two sentient, talking cats solving a mystery involving disappearing old folks and a cat burglar. I give it a 2/5 because it's like a slightly undercooked brownie, you think you like it but by the third bite it's falling apart and isn't holding together very well and you kind of want it to reach the end and it doesn't feel great anymore. You have to put it down and pick out the nice bits and kind of ignore the other bits and just drink a tall glass of milk afterwards.

So what I mean by that, is that the pacing, both in the narrative sense and the pace at which clues are revealed or become more concrete, is too slow. It felt like I was being shown a bunch of unrelated stuff, and the one or two things I did connect painted a much more interesting picture for myself than it turned out to be. I felt shorted. After the descriptions of the frighteningly lifelike dolls and the missing old people I was ready for some real serial killer shit. There was too much space between finding clues and the climax (where everything came together). It felt like I was handed 5 out of 500 puzzle pieces, and then shown the rest of it at the last minute. None of those five fit together in any way. The author was a little too guarded about the conclusion.

Now, not to diss the big mystery itself. It's effective and devilishly practical, and literally would have been an air tight scheme if not for those meddling cats.

The secondary sub-mystery feels unnecessary. It could have stood alone as it's own thing, or have been concluded in the first half. It feels very haphazardly tied to the main mystery.

There's quite a few run on sentences that could have done with some pruning. The imagery is vibrant, and would be great if the book was only about the cats. But it's not. The narrative keeps weaving in and out of cat-centric things like hunting in the moonlight and a gnarly rat fight, and back to the mystery again. It feels disjointed, and could do with some tightening.

Also the author keeps "showing and not telling" me that the main cat is clearly not neutered. God please. Effective imagery. But holy fuck stop showing me this cat's little furry balls.

Now for some lines I wanted to comment on.

"Last week, coming out of the Felther house up on Ridgeview, with her inner coat pockets loaded with a lovely set of Rose of Erin sterling and a fine array of serving pieces, when she saw the gray tom watching from atop a black station wagon and she faced him and swore at him, his eyes had flared with rage. Sentient rage. The kind of violent anger you see only in human eyes."

"He turned away, trotted away purposefully up the side street as if she didn't exist, moved off toward the front of the house, prancing insolently up the center of the sidewalk under the streetlight, his stub tail wiggling back and forth, his tomcat balls making him walk slightly straddle-legged."

"The hunting would be fine, the rabbits giddy and silly in the racing light. She felt giddy herself, felt suddenly moon silly. Felt like rolling and playing."

ZOOMIES

"Harper looked the car over, took out a pack of cigarettes, then changed his mind and put them back in his pocket. As if he didn't want to smoke up the pristine beauty. [...] Again he took a cigarette, slipping it from the pack in his pocket in an automatic reflex. He started to tamp it on the door of the Bentley, then put it back again."

The author is really good at small details like this, little character details and mannerisms that get lost in the rest of the incredibly dense descriptions and things-that-aren't-moving-the-plot-faster.

"She was dressed in jeans and one of those T-shirts that made a statement, a shirt she had obviously selected as appropriate for the occasion. Across her chest four cats approached the viewer, and on the back of the shirt, which he'd seen as she came around the car to get in, was a rear view of the same four cats walking away, as if they were stepping invisibly through the wearer's chest, thier tails high, and, of course, all their fascinating equipment in plain sight."

There's a lot of colorful writing meant to invoke the sharpness and whimsicality surrounding life as a cat, but it suffers from (what I feel are) tone problems. 'kippers and cream' and 'a shake of your tail' right alongside visceral descriptions of the killing blow on a wild rabbit, slowly devouring/pulling it apart. It would be immersive if not for the cat puns and colloquialisms that sound like they belong on a plaque someplace in your Nan's house.

"Tramping heavy-pawed among the delicate bottles, he posed before the mirror, twitching a whisker, giving her a toothy grin. Panning and turning, he glanced over his shoulder, studying his stub tail and his tomcat equipment. She hadn't known he was such a ham."

On the coast, for example, one or two room apartment rents for an average of 500-700 euros, in Milan or Rome - from 850-900 euros per month. Taxes on rents are 21%. It is possible to use the services of management companies.

The average yield from renting in past years ranged from 4-6%. In 2021 it rose to 7.8%. The most lucrative segment in the rental is commercial real estate, stores (11.6%) and offices (9.2%).

Italy provides something for everyone — from a budget retirement to a full-on dolce vita in an art city or a country villa.

The beauty, attractions, and history of Italy are all so alluring that visitors quickly get seduced and start dreaming of living here. What many don’t realize on those initial travels is that Italy can be an affordable place to live, too. Of course, it all comes down to lifestyle and what your overseas dream is; Italy provides something for everyone—from a budget retirement to a full-on dolce vita in an art city or a country villa. Here are my picks for enjoying the alluring lifestyle of Italy—on every budget.

The overall costs for groceries, utilities, and daily services are similar everywhere. Phone plans cost $20, high-speed internet runs around $35 a month, and property taxes are so much lower here that you will be shocked.

From $1,700 Per monthNorthern Lazio

Rome is a spectacular world-class city, full of culture, history, and events. It’s also very pricey, like any major capital city. Luckily, the prices drop quickly when you venture outside Rome. Even just an hour distance opens up the door to bargain living in easy hitting distance of the city.

For the best bargains and lifestyle, head to the Viterbo province, where classic hill towns offer the Old World charm most expats crave, gorgeous landscapes, and low property prices. Viterbo itself is a provincial capital with a medieval old-town center that is spiked with towers, reminiscent of the more famous Tuscan town, San Gimignano, an opulent papal palace, cobbled lanes dotted with wine bars and eateries, and a lived-in feel. With a university, military base, and province offices, it’s an active place. There are also natural hot springs to soak in, Lake Bolsena nearby, and the Mediterranean Sea less than an hour away. The allures of Rome, Orvieto, and southern Tuscany are reached in an hour or less, too.

Rents start at $470 a month here. A beautifully renovated one-bedroom apartment in the center of Viterbo with designer and quality work is listed for $119,030. But there are also homes from $67,000 to $85,000 available, and they’re not tumbled-down wrecks, either.

Even lower prices are found in the lovely smaller towns scattered around the province. Caprarola, with the magnificent Palazzo Farnese crowning its summit, offers habitable houses for sale from $35,000. Sutri, Capranica, Vetralla, and Bagnoregio are other livable, affordable towns.

Basilicata

My own region in southern Italy is ranked as the most affordable in Italian cost of living surveys, and I can certainly agree. Housing is downright cheap, as long you look outside the region’s only two cities, and daily living expenses are low when we go to the mercato (market) for locally-grown produce and the supermarket. Dining out sets us back about $30 for heaping helpings of pasta, a side dish, and a good glass of vino. That’s for two. Granted, Rome isn’t in reach, but Salerno, Bari, and Naples are all within two hours. For those looking for a slow pace, a sense of community, an affordable lifestyle with the magnificent city of Matera as a cultural centerpiece, then you should look at this little-known southern region. They have a saying here that “hospitality is sacred” and they mean it—folks here are welcoming and embracing.

The landscapes are made up mostly of hills and mountains, with dramatic peaks, billowing wheat fields, and panoramas that should be rendered in paintings. Even our gorgeous seaside town, Maratea, called “the pearl of the Mediterranean” isn’t very expensive, with homes for sale starting at $180,000 for a renovated terrace home near the pretty port. The town exudes the atmosphere of the Amalfi Coast, but without the crowds (or prices) and the coastline is simply spectacular.

Go to the small towns around the region of Basilicata and home prices are downright bargains. Hill towns like Muro Lucano, Picerno, and Pisticci offer lovely old-world charm with habitable homes starting at $30,365. Pisticci also has a piece of sandy beachfront on the Ionian Sea, and even here you can snag a new two-bedroom condo just steps from the water for $133,605. It is in a complex with a garden and pool. The downside to village house hunting is most of the homes are for sale by owner and by word of mouth rather than listed with a realtor, so you’ll need to do some on-the-ground searching, but bargains can definitely be found for your efforts.

From $2,400 Per monthLe Marche

The central region of Marche dangles between mountains and the Adriatic Sea, offering the best of all worlds. In fact, it’s called “all of Italy in one region”—with rolling hills, wine country, soaring peaks, and miles of seacoast, it is definitely enticing. It is also often referred to as “the new Tuscany” and it does share some landscapes with that famous region. There just aren’t the high prices and influx of tourists to go with them.

Le Marche isn’t undiscovered—there are plenty of expats here—but it’s not overrun, either, so prices haven’t soared. In essence, there is a lot to love about the homey lifestyle and beautiful places, and it fits a mid-range budget easily.

The travertine-built art city of Ascoli Piceno is an elegant choice, with proud residents and plenty of activity going on. It’s in a valley so walking and biking is easy. Here, nice rentals can be found for $550 to $700 monthly. A two-bedroom, two-bathroom townhouse is for sale for 167,613 in the center near the river. Go up the road to the ochre-colored hill town of Osimo, close to the regional capital city of Ancona, and just a half-hour from the Adriatic Sea, where a newly-restored two-bedroom apartment is for sale in the center of town for 94,738. If a farmhouse in the hills is your dream, there are plenty of those to choose from, as well, prices start at around $280,000 for partially-renovated homes. A good example is a farmhouse in the central hills with a separate guesthouse, with five bedrooms, an orchard and olive grove, and privacy, for $302,433.

From $3,200 Per Month

Italy is a fabulous place to live it up, and live well, and if you can afford the villa in the country or the city penthouse, the comforts, culture, and lifestyle that attracted the likes of George Clooney and Sting can be yours to enjoy. If your budget is high, then consider these classic destinations for an enticing retirement.

The Coast or Capri

The glittery Italian Mediterranean coastline leaves many with indelible images of magical Italy at its coastal best. Pastel-painted seaside towns, green scrub-covered hills that tumble to the turquoise water, a color so deep and blue it seems impossible. Whether it’s the Riviera, the Amalfi Coast, or the set-apart isle of Capri that strikes a chord, they’re all gorgeous—and come at premium prices. But if you can afford it, the coastal life certainly has its beautiful rewards.

Rentals here are hard to come by, as most cater for tourists. Besides the daily cost of living being higher (those tourist prices certainly kick in around these areas), the price of real estate is at its premium. A restored 690-square foot apartment in the centro storico of Amalfi, near the Duomo, is on offer for $716,607. Need more space? A 2,200 square foot villa with four bedrooms, two bathrooms, a garden, and pool with sea views might fit your dream, for $1.82 million.

Across the bay on the island of Capri, prices are understandably even higher, but a dreamy destination to be sure. Here, an 807-square foot home looks at the evocative rocks at Marina Piccola, known as faraglioni, featured in postcards and films. The restored loft is beautiful, and comes with a community swimming pool. Price: $1.15 million. A condo in the town center near the shops and cafes is listed for $1.06 million for 968 square feet of renovated space that comes with two sunny terraces.

Rome

The center of western civilization for a few millennia, the Eternal City is at the center of the country and is certainly the beautiful centerpiece of Italy. Ancient and cosmopolitan at the same time, Rome has more sights than you can see in a lifetime. This is the place for those who love a daily-dose of art, culture, music, or shopping (or any combination of them), with tons of art exhibits at any one time, hundreds of churches packed with noteworthy masterpieces, museums aplenty, and music venues with concerts, operas and symphony notes to fit every taste.

This is also a place packed with cafes, wine bars, and restaurants that run from homey to uber-trendy, shopping districts that offer Italy’s top designers along with national (and international) brands, artisan boutiques, and open-air markets that bring in foods from all around the country (and beyond). In short, Rome is Italy’s sophisticated capital city.

It’s also one of the priciest places in the country, like any world city. Apartments in the city center average $835 per square foot for sales prices. Don’t expect to find a nice apartment in the centro storico for less than $2,000 a month. But what an exciting and culture-rich place to live if you can do it!
