This is a poignant article about a project that Michele Norris started that tapped into people's thoughts about race in a profound way--using only six words. This is a gift🎁link, so anyone can read the full interactive article, even if they don't subscribe to The Washington Post. Below are some excerpts from the article:
I have always cringed when the accusations fly about someone allegedly “playing the race card.” It’s usually a proxy for “You’re making me uncomfortable, so please stop talking.” Or a diversionary tactic used to avoid having to speak about race with any kind of precision or specificity. A shorthand for “Just shut up.” And so, in 2010, I flipped the script, turning that accusatory phrase into a prompt to spark conversation. I printed 200 black postcards at my local FedEx Kinko’s on upper Wisconsin Avenue asking people to condense their thoughts on race or cultural identity into one sentence of six words. The front of the cards simply read:
Race. Your thoughts. 6 words. Please send.
I left the cards everywhere I traveled: in bookstores, in restaurants, at the information kiosks in airports, on the writing desks at all my hotels. Sometimes I snuck them inside airline in-flight magazines or left them at the sugar station at Starbucks. I hoped a few of those postcards would come back, thinking it would be worth the trouble if even a dozen people responded. Much to my surprise, strangers who stumbled on the cards would follow the instructions and use postage stamps to mail their six-word stories back to me in D.C. Since my parents were both postal workers, this gave me an extra thrill. Here I was, doing my part to support the Postal Service. Who says snail mail is dead? Half a dozen cards arrived within a week, then 12, then 20. Over time, that trickle became a tide. I have received more than 500,000 of these stories — and more arrive every day, though the vast majority of submissions now arrive through a website portal online. They have come from all 50 states and more than 100 countries. Though limited to six words, the stories are often shocking in their candor and intimacy. They reveal fear, disappointment, regret and resentment. Some are kissed by grace or triumph. A surprising number arrive in the form of a question, which suggests that many people hunger not just for answers but for permission to speak their truths. It was amazing what people could pack into such a small package:

To keep the conversation going, I created a complementary website for the Race Card Project, where people could submit their six-word stories online. Over time we added two words to the submission form: “Anything else?” That changed everything. People sent in poems, essays, memos and historical documents to explain why they chose their six words. The archive came alive. It became an international forum where people could share their own stories but also learn much about life, as if it were lived by someone else.
I highly recommend reading the entire article, using the above gift link. As an olive-skinned Italian American, with curly hair, I have often felt like I am a walking Rorschach test for race. Even though I'm classified as "white" in the U.S., I've had people ask me if I'm a Latina, a Native American, Black, Egyptian, Jewish, and even a South Pacific Islander. Given my history, here are my six words on race.

9 Terrifying American Murder Houses
From Amityville Horror to Jeffrey Dahmer’s one-bedroom, these murder houses are home to some truly brutal murders.
9. THE AMITYVILLE HORROR HOUSE 112 OCEAN AVE, AMITYVILLE, NY
When the deal is too good, start asking questions. In 1975, George and Kathy Lutz bought this sprawling Dutch Colonial on the south shore of Long Island at a bargain rate. The reason for the discounted price tag? Just 13 months earlier, previous resident Ronald “Butch” DeFeo slaughtered his parents and four younger siblings while they slept in their beds. It didn’t take long for the weirdness to begin. Demonic voices, oozing walls, cloven hoof prints in the snow. The Lutz family lasted just two months before fleeing 112 Ocean Avenue in the night.
8. THE HEX MURDER HOUSE REHMEYERS HOLLOW RD, SHREWSBURY, PA
In 1928, John Blymire was convinced a reclusive neighbor named Nelson Rehmeyer had put a hex upon him. Believing the only way to break the curse was to track down Rehmeyer’s spell book and set it ablaze, Blymire rallied two buddies for a late-night visit. While the gang never found the book, they did find Rehmeyer whom they murdered and mutilated before setting his body on fire. In 2007, an effort was made to open the Hex House to the public, but the plan was eventually scrapped.
7. MOORE FAMILY AXE MURDER HOUSE 508 E 2ND ST, VILLISCA, IA
On a cool summer night in 1912 someone broke into this peaceful Iowa homestead and bludgeoned all six family members plus two houseguests with an axe. The horrific scene was discovered the following morning by a concerned neighbor. Numerous suspects were named in the case including a traveling minister and State Senator Frank F. Jones. Nevertheless, the murder remains unsolved.
6. KREISCHER MANSION 4500 ARTHUR KILL RD, STATEN ISLAND, NY
German entrepreneur Balthasar Kreischer built this sprawling mansion in 1885 as a symbol of his success in the brick making business. The good times were short-lived. By 1894, his company had crumbled and his youngest son had shot himself in the head. The decaying mansion sat empty for years until its groundskeeper used the property for a mob hit in 2005. Joseph Young strangled and stabbed his target before finally drowning the man in a garden pool. Young then hacked up the body and burned it in the mansion’s incinerator.
5. LIZZIE BORDEN HOUSE 230 2ND ST, FALL RIVER, MA
On August 4, 1892 Andrew Borden was thrashed with a hatchet while he dozed on the couch of his parlor. Andrew’s second wife Abby met an equally grisly end in the upstairs bedroom. While everyone in Fall River suspected daughter Lizzie of the crime, the local judge remained unconvinced. She was tried and acquitted of the murder one year later. Oddly, the home is now a successful bed & breakfast.
4. MANSON FAMILY MURDER HOUSE 10050 CIELO DRIVE, LOS ANGELES, CA
In 1969, members of the Manson Family shocked the nation when they broke into this L.A. estate and slaughtered Sharon Tate along with four other victims. The murderers wrote pig in blood across the front door. Numerous residents have since called 10050 Cielo Drive home including musician Trent Reznor, who recorded THE DOWNWARD SPIRAL there. In 1994, the original structure was razed and replaced with a new mansion, currently occupied by the creator of FULL HOUSE.
3. JEFFREY DAHMER’S APARTMENT 924 NORTH 25TH ST, APT 213, MILWAUKEE, WI
Cannibal killer Jeffrey Dahmer lured numerous victims to his nondescript one-bedroom, where he drugged and dismembered them in a brutal campaign of murder. Severed limbs were packed in the freezer for future consumption; torsos were dumped in a vat of acid. Police finally arrested Dahmer in 1991 after one of his prisoners managed to escape. The entire apartment building was torn down shortly thereafter.
2. JOHN WAYNE GACY’S HOUSE 8213 SUMMERDALE AVE, CHICAGO, IL
It’s always good to know your neighbors especially if you suspect them of murder. John Wayne Gacy buried dozens of bodies in the basement and backyard of his suburban home while neighbors casually went about their day. When Gacy’s wife complained of a putrid smell, Gacy blamed it on dead mice. By the time police nabbed the infamous killer clown and excavated his 8213 Summerdale Ave property, they uncovered 29 bodies.
1. GARDETTE-LAPRETE HOUSE 1240 BURGUNDY ST, NEW ORLEANS, LA
In the late 1830s, plantation owner Jean LePrete leased his French Quarter Greek Revival to a mysterious man from Turkey. The renter, known only as The Sultan had more than a few roommates. He arrived with a massive entourage of eunuchs and concubines. The house quickly became known for its lavish parties, with music and revelry carrying on into the night. One morning, a passerby noticed 1240 Burgundy was eerily quiet. Then he spotted blood seeping out of the door. When authorities entered, they found everyone inside had been murdered and dismembered. As for The Sultan? He was buried alive in the courtyard. To this day, the case remains unsolved.

Capn Ross presided with the Govn Sir John Franklin on his right and Capn Crozier on his left. There was Several very appropriate Speeches made and Toasts drank. Dancing and feasting was Kept up until 6 oClock in the Morning and every thing went off with the greatest Eclat and hilarity.

The Hobart Town Courier and Van Diemen's Land Gazette, Friday 4 June reported ‘The anxiously looked for entertainment took place on Tuesday evening last, the 1st June, and although it was sanguinely expected by those who had the gratification of being among the chosen guests that it would be a brilliant affair, we venture to assert that the gayest dreams of the most imaginative of those fair ones who looked forward to it with palpitating hearts, never in their most enthusiastic flights pictured to themselves so perfect and captivating a scene as was in reality presented to them! - and amongst those whose sober minds regarded it with a more matter-of-fact complacency, we are equally sure even they could not but acknowledge their zeal and gratitude awakened by the unsparing pains and labour, evident in every part of the arrangements, devised with such triumphant success to render them for one evening, at least, supremely happy.’
The Hobart Town Advertiser, 4 June 1841, reported that more than 300 were present, and the ships were moored head and stern within 35 yards of the shore. ‘The approach was over a bridge of boats, which was covered in with canvas and flags - ornamental shrubs, and a continuous avenue, lighted by numerous lamps. Serjeants of marines of vessels stationed at entrance. Company received at end of passage, on main deck of ship, by several naval officers in full dress.

Season 3 Rewatch Drabbles--3x03 Quite a Common Fairy

Summary:  A series of 100-500 word drabbles to accompany my    rewatch of season 3 of Once Upon a Time.  There will be a drabble–either a deleted scene, a “fix it” fic or a character musing for each episode of the season.  Focus will be on Emma, Henry, the Charmings and Killian–with an emphasis on Captain Swan’s epic love story.

Coconuts in hand and hook, Killian returned to the clearing where the heroes rested after another long day on Neverland.  It was the work of a moment to decide where he should take a seat.  After all, the prince and princess were seated together, deep in soft conversation, as were Regina and Tink. Swan sat alone, staring pensively into the fire.
“May I?” he asked, nodding toward the log on which she sat.
Swan shrugged.  “Suit yourself.  Not sure I’m much company tonight, though.”
Killian settled in and chuckled humorlessly.  “It’s rather difficult for anyone to be so in this infernal place.”
She turned to look at him.  “This is how you stayed alive for hundreds of years, isn’t it,” she asked, “by spending that time on Neverland?”
It wasn’t a subject he preferred to dwell on, so he merely nodded.
“How did you survive it?” she asked.  “I’ve been here, what? Two, three days?  And I already feel like I’m crawling out of my skin.”
Killian felt the compassion bubbling up. He knew that feeling all too well.  This place bred hopelessness and amplified pain. “I simply put one foot in front of the other,” he finally answered. “I kept my focus on my objective, refusing to dwell on the … oppressive … atmosphere of this place and the sadistic nature of its ruler.”
“Easier said than done,” she murmured, turning back toward the fire.
“Aye, but you have family, friends, those who care about you to help you through,” he said. “Focus on that.  If you must think ahead, focus on the moment your lad is returned to you, the moment you, all of us go home.”
She turned and gave him a grateful smile.  “Thanks,” she said simply. “And…did you have that too?  Did you have friends on this island?”
He was silent for a long time, not entirely sure how to answer the question.  He’d had his crew, of course–at least those who weren’t trapped in Echo Cave, killed by dreamshade or destroyed by Pan’s sadistic games–but one could hardly call one’s subordinates friends.  And then there was Bae, but it’s hard to call a lad who despises you for selling him out your friend.
He supposed if anyone fit the description, it would be Tink.  He’d sought her out now and again when he needed a commiserating ear.  They’d swapped stories of the misfortunes that had led them to this place and their less than pleasant encounters with Pan.  He’d even spent a night here or there at her treehouse.  But theirs was an acquaintance of convenience and mutual bitterness, rather than a true friendship.
If the truth were told, he hadn’t felt the true pull of friendship with anyone in centuries–until he met Swan.
Of course, one rarely felt like an awkward lad fancying his first woman with a friend.  One rarely felt his stomach swoop when she looked at him, his heart race when she gave him a rare smile, or electricity pulse through his system when their hands met.
It was best not to continue down that avenue of thought, Killian decided, turning away to grab one of the coconuts and pierce it with his hook.  He handed it to her, basking in the grateful smile and simple “Thanks” she sent his way.
“I supposed perhaps Tink could be considered a friend,” he said, finally answering her question.
Swan took a quick sip from the coconut.  “So you think we can trust her?  Really?”
“Aye,” he answered. “She won’t cross Pan unnecessarily–self preservation and all of that–but I’m also certain she will not betray us.”
“Good enough for me at this point,” Emma said with a quick nod.
They fell into silence for a moment, before she turned back toward him, tentatively laying a hand on his arm. (He tried fruitlessly to ignore the way that simple gesture inspired it all–the stomach swoop, the racing heart and the electricity, all rolled up into one.)  “I’m really glad you’re here with us, helping us.”
He smiled. “As am I.”
And suddenly, he realized it was true.  Though he’d spent centuries trying to get off of this bloody island, right now there was nowhere he’d rather be.

2022 in antisemitic hate crimes.

Jan. 2nd: a 26 year-old Hasid was chased and beaten in Williamsburg. He required several staples in his head.
Jan. 14: in front of a Haredi Orthodox shul in Midwood, a white woman wearing Uggs and an orange hoodie spat on an 8 year-old Jewish boy and made anti-Semitic remarks. The woman allegedly yelled — at a 2, 7, and 8 year-old child playing outside of a synagogue, mind you: “Hitler should have killed you all.” “I’ll kill you and know where you live.”
Jan 22: On Shabbat in Crown Heights around 1 AM, a Hasidic man told the NYPD that he was approached and punched in the face. It's being investigated as a hate crime.
Feb. 4: On Shabbat in Bedstuy, a man ran up to two Hasidic men and punched one of them in the head.
Another assault involving a Jewish victim was also reported that same night
Feb. 11: At least one religious Jew was attacked on Shabbat evening in Flatbush by a person in a hoodie. NYPD are investigating as a hate crime. "Video shows the attacker trying to intimidate the victim, then slapping him in the face, knocking off his yarmulke."
April 1: A group of assailants repeatedly punched and kicked a Hasidic man in Williamsburg. a blurry video appears to show the group striking the victim and shoving him against the side of the truck, where he collapsed, and the beating continued.
April 2: Three teens armed with a crowbar, a knife and a machete allegedly threatened six boys, ranging in age from 12 to 16, on the Upper West Side.
May 6: Two men punched and kicked a rabbi in Crown Heights while making anti-Semitic remarks.
May 10: A man in a hoodie ran up to and punched a Jewish man walking in Flatbush. The man allegedly said, "Free Palestine."
July 13: 3 men assault a Jewish father in front of his 5 year old child
Aug. 9: A 44 year-old Jewish woman at a subway station on the Upper East Side "was choked by an unidentified male suspect, who made antisemitic remarks to her while she waited on the subway platform of the No. 6 train at around 11:20 a.m." according to NYPD.
Aug. 20: Two ultra-Orthodox men were chased down the street in Williamsburg, and at least one was sprayed with a fire extinguisher (which contains major skin and eye irritants)
Aug. 22: A 27-year-old Hasid was slapped by a stranger on Lynch St. near Marcy Ave in Williamsburg at about 4:30 p.m., per NYPD.
Aug. 22: Two teenage boys and a teen girl harassed and then chased a 13-year-old Jewish boy off of a Staten Island bus, took the boy's yarmulke from of his head, and fled.

Sep. 13: A 58 year-old man in Far Rockaway was allegedly punched in the face by a man hurling antisemitic epithets. NYPD has arrested a 34 year-old suspect, per Hamodia.
Sep. 17: Female suspect verbally assaults a Hassidic man before slapping the hat (and Kippah) off his head
Oct. 23: A suspect on a bike road up behind an 18 year old Jewish man and knocked him down
Oct. 24: Three students standing outside their Yeshivah on Avenue L & East 18th Street, were pelted by eggs. The perpetrators screamed “Free Palestine" and forced the students to say it as well.
Nov. 3: an elderly Jewish man walking on Kingston Ave had water and garbage thrown at him.
Nov. 8: Three men fired a gel-based pellet gun at a Hasidic woman and her son. They have been charged with assault as a hate crime, assault, aggravated harassment, and criminal possession of a weapon.
Nov. 9: A group of 4 assaulted a Jewish man in Brooklyn, knocking off his streimel
Dec. 5: A father and his 7 year-old son were shot with a BB gun outside of a Staten Island kosher grocery store
I want to be clear that A) this is ONLY! inside of New York City B) is only assaults and not any other kind of hate crimes like harassment or threats or property crimes and finally C) this is one reporter's informal attempt to track this problem, she admits she thinks she missed some crimes, so this list should not be seen as an authoritative list.

Puella Magi Madoka Magica:Rebellion (8/10)-Big Cake Round Cake Right in Front of Me!
The Little Mermaid 2023 (6/10)-The singing was good besides that wack Awkwafina rap
Craig Before The Creek (8/10)-While I liked Craig of the Creek, I wouldn’t call myself a fan but this prequel was pretty fun into was the main characters were like before
Madame Web (0/10)-No reason to watch, awful effects, bland characters, boring story
Megaman X5 (7/10)-Honestly, the story was kind of stale but the gameplay was still top notch
Peacemaker (9/10)-After playing him in Mortal 1 Kombat, I loved this show. Fun characters, funny dialogue, and some pretty good fights
Megaman X6 (5/10)-Guilty pleasure, while a lot of it was annoyingly hard, I liked the virus stuff and the story
Avenue Q (9/10)-Pretty emotional musical about adulthood despite being played by muppets
Kung Fu Panda 4 (6/10)-Waaay too safe, the villain was intimidating until being defeated in 3 hits
Secrets of the Furious Five (8/10)-Pretty neat special, I liked the Furious Five from their movie screentime and the show and this helped fleshed them out
The Button of Doom (6/10)-While not as good as the movie. This is something Megamind 2 wishes it could be
South Park (8/10)-After 26 Seasons, this show is still pretty good. It has moments that make me laugh while still being shocking and there are characters I find likable to watch like Butters and Kenny
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth (10/10)-Takes my favorite disk of FFVII and expands hard on it. Traversal feels freeing, the locations feel more full, and the story takes some wild turns.
Smiling Friends Season 1 (8/10)-This shows that adult cartoons don’t have to be about nihilism and can be about hope and enjoying life.
Seth MacFarlane’s Cavalcade of Cartoon Comedy (3/10)-While I find Seth MacFarlane funny this didn’t do it for me. The comedy while having decent setups, is ultimately too lazy to make it funny
Megaman X7 (4/10)-Gameplay was repetitive, the voice acting was bad but hey still liked it more than X3
Megaman X8 (8/10)-The gameplay is pretty fun this time, and Lumine is a pretty good villain if they expanded her more
Megaman X:The Day of Sigma (5/10)-The animation is good don’t get me wrong but the pacing couldn’t keep me engaged
Saw (7/10)-Pretty good story about someone who wants to help people realize they want to live by putting them in death traps
Fairy Tail 100 Years Quest Manga (Currently 8/10)-My favorite anime is Fairy Tail and this sequel expands pretty well, the Dragon Gods concept is interesting, the characters are still as they were which is how I like them, and the art during fights are really well detailed
Hello Kitty Super Style (9/10)-I love Supercute Adventures and this show honestly feels like if we got a full 11 minute show.
Mortal Kombat 1995 (8/10)-Fun action and characters. Effects didn’t age the best
Grave of The Fireflies (9/10)-Really emotional movie about those suffering during war
Persona 3 Reload (10/10)-The best gameplay and presentation Persona has ever been.
Godzilla:King of Monsters (9/10)-Really cool action and monsters
King Kong:Skull Island (8/10)-Pretty good story and action
Godzilla 2014 (5/10)-Probably spoiled by how good future Monsterverse but the spectacle was kind of forgettable
Godzilla vs Kong (10/10)-Yup still as fun as I remember it
Hunter X Hunter 2011 (9/10)-As much as I want to strangle Gon the rest of the series is pretty fire
Kaguya Sama Love is War!:The First Kiss That Never Ends (9/10)-Pretty funny and emotional movie
Komi Can’t Communicate (9/10)-Fluttershy as an anime girl
My Senpai Is Annoying (8/10)-I came in wanting Kurobe, left loving Futaba and Takeda
Pokémon Mystery Dungeon:Explorers of Sky-Beyond Time and Darkness (5/10)-The dub is too goofy
OFF The RPG (Opinion Has Changed as of September) (8/10)-Originally I found the fights boring and the fact I was softlocked made it lower. That was a mistake. The story is really haunting and dark, the fights are really basic but not bad, and the locations have an eerie feeling to them
One Piece Film Z (10/10)-Z is a really intimidating villain and the action is pretty good
My Little Pony:The Manga (7/10)-Cute artwork, I wish the stories were better

Ready willing and able is a program that houses its employees , workers , that's right I said they house their workers , their workers are mainly men that are set out in teams of 7 on 9 am - 5 pm shifts the 10 am - 6 pm shift and the 11 am - 7 pm shifts to clean the streets from litter and debris all through New York City . Well mainly they only have two offices in Brooklyn and Manhattan New York City and have contracts to clean areas in Brooklyn considered commercial properties and some not so commercial areas and then in Manhattan they have contracts for areas like Madison Avenue , 5th Avenue , Park Avenue , York Avenue , 3rd Avenue , and well off and upscale neighborhoods . In the housing facility where the workers reside their are 3 course meals provided for free to the public as well as the people that work there this program also have employment for other people and they are currently and always employing new people . The food is thoroughly cooked and good nutritious meals and served to the people that work their and in the surrounding neighborhoods some people call it home away from home or for some others a safe place to eat and enjoy some television away from danger and idleness .
This proposal is for their to be an expansion of that program the doe fund ready , willing and able program to new facilities in new neighborhoods and boroughs Staten Island , The Bronx and Queens to better clean the streets of New York City , making New York's inner city a safe place to visit and clean and beautiful . As you know I myself worked in the ready willing and able program years ago and personally by myself cleaned up Fox square in Brooklyn New York City the Downtown Brooklyn Neighborhood In Brooklyn New York . That are for my understanding was and had been filled with garbage debris for years and decades and decades until I got there with the program the Doe fund Ready , Willing and Able day program I cleaned up that part of the city in the infamous Brooklyn New York not too far from the Barclay center . Now today Fox Square is a place where people that work in that environment can go and sit and enjoy their lunch and chat with their friends and family . It is a safe and clean walkthrough and as of now ready , willing and able now have the contract to clean Fox Square daily because of my personal muscle work on that neighborhood in Brooklyn New York . Go Green and protect and preserve your environment and neighborhood .
The vision for New York City it is to turn it into the great city that it once was when the immigrants arrived here from Ireland , Europe , Germany , Scotland , Italy and Israel , all of those people migrated from their home country and packed the slums in New York City and then in progression those communities rose to power through their hard work and genius and they took care of their communities because they cared about their neighborhoods . I'm saying to you that ready willing and able is them guys and women the best crew of workers and clean up crew that New York has got the best gentlemen and women you could ever meet they want to make a difference and to keep their neighborhoods clean in the Bedford Stuyvesant neighborhoods , Brownsville neighborhoods in Brooklyn New York City , East New York area , Queens bridge , Ravenswood and Lefrak City in Queens New York City even the Saint Nicholas housing projects in Harlem , Drew Hamilton housing projects , Polo Grounds housing projects and Lincoln Housing projects also bin Harlem New York City with the expansion of the routes going more into the inner boroughs and cities of New York City . What I'm proposing if you look at a map of the city is that ready willing and able be given new routines that contract routes of inner city blocks to better clean those neighborhoods of graffiti , litter and debris in our city streets giving people of that community employment and a chance to then beautify their communities with clean parks , trees and areas like Fox Square to sit and enjoy themselves .
