I am unrepentantly garrulous about my obsession with the Sam Pancake Presents the Monday Afternoon Movie podcast, in which our effervescent host disinters and forensically (and hilariously) analyzes ultra-kitsch unloved made-for-TV movies from the seventies and eighties. In his latest installment Pancake is joined by guest Andrew Hopf to discuss freaky 1973 ABC thriller Scream, Pretty Peggy. (The weirdly un-tantalizing tagline “A pretty co-ed’s part-time job leads to a bizarre pay-off!” barely hints at what an oddity this movie is). The titular Peggy (played by Sian Barbara Allen) is a hopelessly naïve and gauche mooncalf-type who takes a housekeeping job at the Elliott family mansion presided over by sculptor son Jeffrey (Ted Bessell – aka Marlo Thomas’ fiancé Donald from That Girl!) and fearsome gorgon-like alcoholic mama Mrs. Elliott (special guest star Bette Davis, pictured. Wait until you hear Pancake’s Davis impression). If Peggy wasn’t so damn unworldly, alarm bells would be ringing. Jeffrey’s menacing satanic sculptures are clearly the expression of a troubled psyche. Then there’s the conspicuously absent mysterious sister Jennifer everyone keeps referring to. “She went to Europe, I think,” Mrs. Elliott explains not very convincingly. “Yes. Europe.” What follows is heavily (and I mean HEAVILY) indebted to Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho. For Davis completists, Scream is a must. This dates from her wilderness years when her opportunities were limited to obscure films no one saw (like Connecting Rooms (1970), Bunny O’Hare (1971) and The Scientific Cardplayer (1972)) and flop TV pilots (The Judge and Jake Wyler (1972), Madame Sin (1972). Davis is on ferocious hagsploitation form here and her delivery of the line “I fell. I’m sorry. I’m afraid. I’ve. Broken. My. LEG” alone makes this gem worth catching. (Scream, Pretty Peggy used to be viewable on YouTube (that’s where I watched it years ago) but has since been deleted. It IS available on DVD and Blu-ray as of 2021).

An early 1600s account of Irish Travellers
This is a bit off topic, since it doesn't discuss clothing, but I'm not apologizing for posting it, because Irish Travellers are a marginalized group whose history is little-documented and under-researched.
This account comes from an Exeter College, Oxford manuscript written c. 1607-1608 by an unknown Anglo-Irish protestant. The writing reflects period-typical anti-Irish bigotry and anti-sex worker prejudice. If there is any truth to what it describes, however, the Irish Travellers deserve some credit for their role in the Elizabethan Era Irish uprisings. According to this author, they acted as an intelligence service for the Irish, disseminating information that helped to coordinate Irish forces in different parts of the country, in addition to supplying Irish troops with food and munitions, and possibly also engaging in guerrilla attacks against English-occupied towns.
I have modernized the spelling, punctuation, and some of the wording to make it easier to read. The original text can be read here.

"Another kind of these associations are a roguish kind of people, some are stout beggars, some are professed wh*res, or common women, and are therefore called Traveling women, some kerroghes(1) or gamesters, other counterfeit fools or Jesters, others are messengers, and carriers of letters and the like, and all these do continually travel from feast to feast, from meeting to meeting, all the kingdom over, and are never permanent in any one place, and they live only by begging, and that in such a fashion, as they will constrain men to be liberal unto them, either by railing or otherwise, but under pretense of this covert of beggary, this poison is much enhanced. For, if any matter of negotiation be a foot, and purposed to be spied over among all these idle jealous brood, or if any novelty either foreign or domestic be stirring, or if any revolt or treacherous attempt be intended, these be the instrument, that do whisper them at all times from one to another of all the Irish faction. These be the conduits that carry and convey these Evils from place to place; these do divulge and scatter this reprobate opinion in every corner of that kingdom, and these do join these firebrands together and help to make up a formal fire of all manner of treasons and villainies. @birkenzeisig asked: “Mhmmmm, do you know that you will lose this round?” the bodyguard of one of the other cardplayers leaned over to Nastka, her elbows leaned coyly on the edge of the table and a amused shimmer in her dark eyes.In the loud noises of the casino,- the music that was played, the clattering of coins, the singsang of voices, the beeping of the sloth-machines- Senritsus voice was nothing but a whisper dancing along the orchestra of noises and she was very aware that her voice was barely hearable by the other people sitting by the table. “This ones” she nodded barely noticeable to the player opposite of Nastka: “- breathing is affannato and disperato, even if he tries to hide it by smoking. His cardhand is very bad.” the womans short, gnarled fingers tapped on the edge of the table in the tact of the breathing she was describing. “This one-” Senritsus fingers danced in a playful melody through the air and she pointed incidental to the player left of Nastka: “- is tapping his foot- a nervous tick since he got his cards. I do not even need to hear his breathing or other noises to know that he is nervous about his cardhand.” “When My boss over there got his cards his heartbeat turned loud and tempestoso for a moment, only to turn quiet and calm the next second. The typical melody of someone afraid but tempted by the thrill. He has not the best hand of cards, but he is willing to risk it.” the womans fingers pointed to the last player of the round sitting right to Nastka, the melody of her fingers tapping on the table changed into a lively song: “But than there is this one. When she got her cards her heartbeat sparked up and stayed in a highpitched song- she has good cards and going against her means that you will lose a lot of money.”The short woman tilted her head from one side to another like a thoughtful bird before she looked up to Nastka. Behind them errupted a trumpetsound of cheering noises when someone won a cardgame, but the bodyguard did not looked over although there was a mild twitching in her face as if she flinched a little away from a too loud sound: "Yes, I told that my boss too." There was a amused shimmer in her dark eyes: "I also told him how you sound, but He won´t listen and will lose a lot of money." [ @hunting-songs ]
Nastka reclined in his chair with an air of nonchalant elegance, the burn of whiskey still warming his lips as he savored the lingering taste of indulgence. His fingers, languidly resting against his temples, seemed to speak a language of idle curiosity, betraying a keen interest masked beneath a veneer of relaxation. The surrounding clamor of the casino—the jubilant strains of music, the clinking symphony of coins, the incessant hum of voices, and the rhythmic beeps of slot machines—merged into a distant murmur, creating a cocoon where only the bodyguard’s whisper carried significance.
Senritsu’s words fluttered through the cacophony like a soft, enigmatic melody, her observations painting a vivid tapestry of human emotion and hidden truths. Nastka’s gaze followed her delicate, deliberate gestures as if they were threads weaving a complex narrative of the night’s drama.
He studied the player opposite him, whose breath came in sharp, erratic bursts, a desperate rhythm punctuated by the trembling cigarette between his fingers. Each inhale and exhale seemed to reveal his trepidation, the fragile façade of confidence cracking under the weight of his poor hand.
Next, Senritsu’s fingers traced a playful path to the player on Nastka’s left. The gentle tapping of his foot, a seemingly benign tic, resonated with the discordant note of nervousness. Nastka’s eyes fixated on the man’s fidgeting, a subtle dance of anxiety that spoke volumes about his own unease. A slight smile graced Nastka’s lips, a silent acknowledgment of the unspoken language of the game.
When Senritsu’s focus shifted to the player on his right, Nastka’s gaze followed with rapt attention. Her description of the woman’s heartbeat—a lively, insistent rhythm—painted a vivid picture of her confidence. The pulsating cadence of her own excitement seemed to echo through the air, a siren call to the unwary. Nastka nodded, a gesture of respect for the insight that illuminated the woman’s formidable position.

As Senritsu concluded her observations, Nastka’s curiosity flared like a flickering flame. He leaned forward, his eyes gleaming with intrigue as he sought to unravel the mystery of his own presence in this intricate dance of deceit and strategy. “And what of me?” he inquired, his voice a mellifluous murmur that cut through the ambient chaos. “How do I sound to you? Is my ‘melody’ as predictable as the others? What secrets does it tell you about me?”
His gaze remained unwavering, an invitation to delve deeper into the enigmatic symphony of his own persona, as he awaited the bodyguard’s revelation with a blend of intrigue and quiet anticipation.

Meanwhile the teens passed time playing games. Later in they, too, would have to pull a shift on the driver's seat.
Sigstein: "Ames! How come you play so atrociously after two solid weeks of practicing? You sound like a bloody beginner again! Heck, you're even playing with two fingers again!"
Amadeus: "You try hitting the keys with those mittens on..."
Connor: "We're playing cards wearing mittens, your argument is invalid."
What made this funny is that the two cardplayers have mastered their Motorics childhood aspiration, that requires a lot of typing, while the piano player didn't. Siggy and Connor therefore have no trouble using their fingers in the mittens.
