"We are thrilled to announce the launch of the Garifuna International Indigenous Film Festival (GIIFF) on November 9th-November 12th, 2023, a groundbreaking initiative dedicated to supporting and preserving the Garifuna nation and all indigenous cultures being held at the Electric Lodge located in Venice, California.
This unique film festival will create a platform for filmmakers, artists, and community leaders/members to showcase their works while emphasizing the importance of cultural diversity and representation. The Garifuna people, originating from the Caribbean Island of St. Vincent, possess a rich tradition and enduring heritage that deserves global recognition. The Garifuna International Indigenous Film Festival aims to bring this vibrant culture to the forefront and shed light on the struggles and triumphs of the Garifuna nation and other indigenous communities worldwide.
The underlying objective of GIIFF is to promote a deeper understanding and appreciation of indigenous traditions, values, and stories. Through the power of film, GIIFF aims to bridge gaps, foster dialogue, and debunk stereotypes surrounding indigenous cultures.
This multidisciplinary approach will not only provide a unique experience for audiences, but it will also contribute to the preservation of cultural heritage for future generations.
GIIFF will feature a diverse selection of thought provoking-international films, documentaries, workshops, cultural presentations, and short films that center around indigenous cultures. The festival strives to create an inclusive space, where filmmakers and artists can engage with industry leaders, intellectuals, and audiences who share a passion for the sense of community and collaboration, encouraging meaningful conversations and connections.
This inclusive space not only allows industry leaders and intellectuals to engage with these powerful stories but also invites audiences from all walks of life to immerse themselves in the beauty and diversity of indigenous cultures. The GIIFF is more than just a film festival; it is a celebration of heritage, resilience, and the power of storytelling."

The play is short. The Stede caricature is ridiculous beyond even the actual Stede, but the troupe swears "the story of the death of the Gentleman Pirate is presented wholly truthfully for your eyes!"
Izzy scoffs as they walk away from the outdoor theater setup. "He's not dead."
Ed turns, tears streaming. "They just told us he is! I'll-"
There's a ghost of a threat lingering in the air between them.
"I can't believe he's dead," Ed sobs instead, and Izzy pulls him away from the main street of the port town towards the beach.
"Boss," Izzy says. "Think about it."
"I don't want to," Ed replies miserably. "The fuck is wrong with you, man? Why would I want to keep thinking about him being torn apart by a jungle cat-"
"He wasn't," Izzy interrupts. "He-"
"Oh god," Ed weeps. "That's right; it was the piano that struck the killing blow."
He sobs into Izzy's shoulder, and Izzy pats his back while searching for a way to make clear to Ed what seems incredibly clear to him.
Bonnet isn't dead. He can't be dead, because that's a nonsensical death even for him. To anyone who hasn't spent years arranging fuckeries with Ed, it might seem unlikely but true. And to Ed, clouded by grief, it can only seem true.
Izzy decides to try one last time. Either he'll get him to see it now, or it won't become clear until Stede finds them again himself, because where else would he be going but to find Ed?
"Ed, take a breath, and play along with me for a moment," Izzy says. "We've transported the occasional exotic pet, yeah?"
Ed sniffles and stands up straight again. "Yeah. Fuckin' hate moving animals around."
"Right," Izzy continues. "If not us, then surely other pirates have also done the same, and might have filled an order for such a cat, yeah?"
Ed nods, and there's a glimmer in his eyes. "Yeah. Yeah, they might have."
"So then, knowing what you taught him about a good fuckery," Izzy says. "That might be something Stede would incorporate into a fuckery of his own."
"You didn't call him Bonnet," Ed says with a curious tilt of his head.
Izzy ignores it and plows onwards. "But you noted yourself, back when you'd planned to kill him and take his identity-"
"Iz," Ed winces.
"Let me finish," Izzy sighs. " Please, let me just finish this, because everything is going to fucking change again, and I'm tired of fighting it. I'm going to die, probably."
"Your lost toe really has slowed you down in combat," Ed notes.
"Thanks," Izzy grumbles. "Thank you for that assessment, Ed. Anyway, you said the body would need to be obscured or destroyed in such a way as to prevent any questioning of who the corpse actually was. So long as it was wearing your clothing-"
He pauses as Ed's eyes light up.
"There he is," Izzy sighs, a weary smile on his face.
"He pulled it off," Ed says breathlessly. "Exactly as I'd planned. Well, for myself. I knew it would work!"
"It's your plan, of course it worked," Izzy scoffs. "Now, if you were going somewhere after that plan had succeeded, where might you go?"
Ed nearly rips his arm out of its socket as he drags him back towards their ship, already plotting a course to go find Stede.
He's probably going to die. For now at least, there's burning hot sand getting pushed into the wound of his missing toe as he tries to keep up with Ed.
But Ed will be happy. He won't be Blackbeard, or at least not the Blackbeard he was before. However, did Izzy not say himself to Stede that part of his job was keeping Ed happy no matter what?
He can acknowledge, as of late, he'd forgotten that part. So death or no, the course is unavoidable.
Helping Ed search for and find stupid fucking Stede Bonnet.

As the name suggests, the World Wars involved the world. People from all over served, and this includes people from African and Carribbean countries, yet I feel they are not so well-remembered in media and the history books for their heroics and sacrifices. Here are a few icons among many below.
Eugene Bullard
Tumblr media
Eugene Jacques Bullard (1895-1961) was one of the first black American pilots and served in the French air force’s Lafayette Flying Corps, an all-American volunteer outfit, in World War 1. Meanwhile, in World War 2, Eugene Bullard served as a spy for France, where he also proved highly successful against the Nazi regime. Bullard was fluent in English, German and French, as well as a boxer and self-taught Jazz musician.
Eugene Bullard was awarded fifteen French war medals: Knight of the Légion d’honneur, Médaille Militaire, Croix de Guerre, Volunteer’s Cross (Croix du combattant volontaire), Wounded Insignia, World War I Commemorative Medal, World War I Victory Medal, Freedom Medal, and the World War II Commemorative Medal.
Walter Tull
Tumblr media
Lieutenant Walter Tull (1888 - 1918) was the first British-born black army officer and the first black officer to lead white British troops into battle. He fought on the Somme in 1916 and became the first black combat officer in the British army in spite of a military rule officially excluding "any negro or person of colour” from that position. Before the War, he was a pioneering black football player and the first black outfield player to feature in the English top flight, with two seasons at Tottenham Hotspur.
Sadly, Walter Tull was killed in 1918, during the early German spring offensive, and was never awarded the military cross that he was recommended for.
Johnny Smythe
Tumblr media
Born in Sierra Leone, Johnny Smythe (1915 - 1996) successfully made it into RAF aircrew during the Second World War. Smythe trained as a navigator, having a great talent for mathematics. He successfully navigated 26 bombing missions over Germany, although was unfortunately shot down on his 27th mission and captured. Smythe would spent the last two years of the war in Stalag Luft I, an infamous Lufftwaffe-run POW camp, until he was liberated by the Russians in 1945.
In 1948, Johnny Smythe served as the senior officer aboard the Windrush. After pursuing a career in law and working as the Queen's Counsel for Sierra Leone for a number of years, in 1961 he was appointed Solicitor General of the newly independent Republic of Sierra Leone. In 1978, he awarded the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for his outstanding service.
Ulric Cross
Tumblr media
Ulric Cross (1917 - 2013) was Trinidadian and one of the most decorated Caribbean airmen in WWII. Joining the RAF at 24, he trained as a navigator and joined 139 Squadron, gaining the nickname ‘The Black Hornet’. Cross was an expert in precision bombing and later joined the ranks of the elite Pathfinder Force, flying high-risk missions into enemy territory as low as 50 feet as opposed to 25,000 like most pilots. While Cross was offered the option to rest after completing 50 missions, he instead volunteered for another 30 missions over enemy territory. At the end of the War, Cross had flown a total of 80 missions.
For his undeniable commitment, hard work and skill, Cross was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Distinguished Service Order.

Randomly googled what happened to the indigenous people of Haiti and it broke my heart. There's none of them left! Across the Carribbean, the Spanish alone killed 12 to 15 million indigenous people.
I also stumbled across a website called History Reclaimed on the first page of google results about "The Myth of New World Genocide". I thought, hmm, maybe liberals aren't worse than the right wing after all, but then I remembered that white liberals also don't believe that the 57 million indigenous people eradicated across the Americas count as a genocide because there's still some of them left. So now I think natives had the right idea from the start about scalping white people.

Do you have any advice for someone looking to connect more deeply with their heritage?
Start small: look to your family history first of all. Where are they from? Is there anyone still there? If they ever left, then when and why? Get in contact with relatives, and find out the old stories and customs unique to your family line. Even the most ordinary families in the world have stories.
Learn about the history of your culture, country, and region. Each part of the world has conquered and been conquered at some point in time, and as such, possesses a distinct blend of cultures and history that you can uncover and begin to make your own. Read about the famous figures of the past, and the rises and falls of your own nation.
Look at art, architecture. What are the traditional aesthetics of your homeland? How have they developed over time? Many cultures hold certain colours or materials especially dear, and it’s easy to begin to incorporate these into your everyday life. Music is another way to connect with your heritage, and with the advent of the internet, you can much more easily learn to play traditional instruments or sing melodies from your ancestors’ days.
Not everyone speaks the language of their forefathers, and fewer still speak the regional dialect of their original hometown, so I’d encourage you to learn. There is information out there on almost every last little accent and dialect on our beautiful planet, and elderly relatives would be overjoyed to have you ring them up to practise. Language, especially idiom, is one of the best insights into a culture, I think, and literature, too.
I’d also recommend connecting with other people in a similar position to you, and wanting to learn more about their heritage—there are so many groups and museums devoted to specific cultures and backgrounds. Even if you’re living in a cultural melding-pot of a country, and feel very far removed from your place of origin, it’s never too late to begin again. I know Carribbean girls who have started to read African fashion magazines, British girls who are buying up Desi jewellery brands, and Russian girls who are travelling out into the sticks to learn the traditional crafts of their indigenous ancestors—it’s never too far back to look and learn.
Although the post I wrote here is focused mostly on beauty, a lot of the advice can be used simply to connect more deeply with your heritage culture.

Hetalia Headcanons - Cuba 🇨🇺🏝️🌺
his full human name is carlos ángel machado ruiz, or shortened to carlos machado. i don't have a set physical age for him but maybe around 30?
he's a marxist-leninist. very intelligent, intellectual but unpretentious, and politically active. he's an academic, probably has degrees in political science and/or economics. i could see him being a medical doctor as well, as cuba is renowned for its advanced healthcare.
he's friendly and generous with a laid back personality, loyal to his loved ones and passionate about social/environmental causes. he can be impatient, and does have a temper but it's hard to provoke and reserved for rude and ignorant people. very much a beliver of respect being a two way street.
his canon bday is may 20th and i honestly love that for him. classic stubborn taurus with a touch of unbothered gemini swag.
he's an ambivert, he throws a great party and likes to socialize but also keeps his circle small and needs a lot of alone time. i think he'd be old friends with russia, though they're not as close as they once were and ivan can get on his nerves. he understandably has beef with america, but is slowly becoming more civil with alfred.
he loves to read, particularly history and political theory. some other hobbies are swimming, fishing, playing the tres (a type of guitar) or afro-cuban percussion e.g. tumbadora (aka conga) and bongós.
his sense of humor is dry with a goofy side that comes out around people he's closer with. he has a quick wit and is always telling dad jokes. also very much a softie for kids, animals and nature.
i headcanon him as gay/demisexual, cucan is an essential ship for me personally so they're a package deal. he is so gentle with mattie, so giving and protective. they treasure each other selflessly and understand one another better than anyone.
he loves to eat and cook, especially loves when matthew cooks for him or they cook together. his favorite dish is black beans and rice with tostones. he also loves strawberry ice cream and tropical fruits.
he's afro-latino + mixed race, with yoruba (west african) taino (indigenous carribbean islander) and spanish ancestry. his skin tone would be a medium warm brown, maybe a 5 on the fitzpatrick scale. once again the canon design is kinda colorist.
he has a distinct accent and is mutlilingual, and speaks quite a bit of quebecois thanks to matthew.
his body type is buff and chubby, he's wicked strong and built like a tank but doesn't have that much definition bc the chub is hiding it. dad bod.... chest hair and moobs. he's about 6 feet tall. he has long dreadlocks that he's been maintaining since he was young.
i could see him being a lapsed catholic/culturally catholic but personally atheist. he's much more material than spiritual in terms of philosophy.
he smells like coconut, cinnamon and cigars (in a pleasant way)
he mostly dresses casually (hawaiian shirts and cargo shorts lol) if hes just chilling at home he's probably shirtless. earth tones suit him well, so do orange, yellow, pink, and jewel tones. bonus; he wears a gold chain and sometimes rings.
he partakes in alcohol occasionally, when he does he loves rum and fruit-based cocktails. sipping a lil drink on the beach is one of his favorite ways to relax and he deserves it. he does smoke weed recreationally but honestly i think matthew is way more of a stoner.

OMG!!! WHYTE PEOPLE BADLY CHASED OUT OF ST LUCIA BEACHES.. IN CARRIBBEAN
youtube
I've never seen anyone who feels they are above every human being on earth other than people who call themselves white, these people still have the same mindset of their oppressing history because they are indoctrinated to believe they are above everyone.
Everywhere these shit people go they feel as though they are privileged and entitled. They have no respect for the Indigenous People's rights, customs, and religions. I'm sick and tired of these wicked ass people.
They come and they want to take ownership of our lands while ignoring the Black Indigenous People's ways of living. We are tired of people who don't know that their white race is a social construct and not everyone believes as they do.

One of the things that is interesting to witness from Not Like Us is how little Americans know about Black Canadians. They know nothing about our history or our culture on even a basic level. I'm usually not of fan of believing that Americans are uniquely ignorant, but jeez some of the stuff I'm seeing here is pretty ignorant. Especially when it comes to segregation and slavery.
Jim Crow was a set of laws that originated in the states, but that does not mean there was no segregation in Canada around the same time. Canada was a heavily segregated country until the late 60s and a lot of it was directly inspired by the US and, in some cases, predated Jim Crow laws. Same with the assumption that Black Canadians weren't affected by the trans-Atlantic slave trade? That's just not the case. I know Canada is often touted as "free" during the Civil War, but keep in mind that the British still practiced slavery until 1834 and many of our ancestors were from British Colonies (Jamaica, Barbados, etc.) that weren't granted full independence until the 1960s. The first Black people who set foot in what is now Canada were enslaved. This is all to say a lot of the things people think are unique to Black Americans are also shared with Black Canadians as well.
I have my issues with Drake, and his authenticity as an artist is 100% up for question, however, saying he didn't have the cultural upbringing of an African American* is stupid. As someone who was raised as a fully Black Canadian in Toronto, that is not something that resonates with me or anyone I know at all. Drake went to school in Oakwood Village, an epicentre of Afro-Carribbean culture, hip-hop, and diversity. Him going to a Jewish day school doesn't mean anything when you're talking about one of the most multicultural cities in the world—Black and Jewish communities intersect often. You cannot live a day in Toronto without experiencing Black Canadian culture. I just feel like a lot of the criticisms of Drake fall short because they're clearly being written by people who don't know anything about what it's like to be a Black Canadian.

Welcome
This blog is here to host my extensive collection of 1920s and 30s ephemera relating to the Orient Line of steamers. The Orient Line was established in 1797, and by the 19th century was sailing all over the world. They launched their first packet route to Australia in 1866, and in 1878 formed the Orient Steam Navigation Company, launching the Orient in 1879.
From the start of the 20th century they shared the England-Australia mail route with P&O. Their steamers sailed once a fortnight via Suez, carrying mail, passengers and cargo. Several of their ships were requisitioned as troop ships during both wars, with several lost, but they also maintained a service on their routes to bring vital supplies to England in their refrigerated holds.
During the European summer, some of their ships were repurposed for cruise routes in the Mediterranean, Baltic and even the Carribbean. The ships were fitted with all the luxuries required of long-distance travel, including swimming pools, dance floors, cinemas, and even games decks that were specifically designed to allow the touring England and Australian cricket teams to practice on deck on their way to the Ashes.
The Orient Line merged with P&O, which was a majority stakeholder, in 1960, with the Orient Line name discontinued in 1966. The last Orient Line steamer, the Oriana, was scrapped in 2005, ending over 125 years of Orient Line history.

Tysm for the tag @juniperhillpatient!
10 Characters 10 Fandoms (roughly) 10 Tags
Jet (Avatar: The Last Airbender) - y'all already knew he was gonna be on here, I am unable to resist the allure of a tragic anti-hero. He's a single mom. He's a war criminal. He's always chewing a stupid piece of wheat and Y'know what? He makes it work.
Lucy Gray Baird (The Hunger Games/Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes) - my bestie my girlie <3 I love a gal who's the main character in a murder ballad and knows it. Broke President Snow's heart. Fashion icon. The Appalachian rep we all deserve <3
Anathema Device (Good Omens) - I love witch characters and Anathema is possibly the coolest one. Environmentalist queen. Unfortunately tied to the most Boring dude in the history of literature and television but what are you gonna do. Wears wool dresses! Rides a bike! Is nice to kids!
James Norrington (Pirates of the Carribbean) - I was obsessed with this character for a while. I named a Minecraft villager after him. I cried when the Minecraft villager died. All things considered I like Will and Elizabeth slightly more but they're two people so James is the tiebreaker <3
Aunt Zelda Heap (Septimus Heap) - This is a lady who eats cabbage and nothing else. Who has a cat who is a duck (or vice versa). She wears a giant quilted dress and lives in a swamp and brews magical potions and I want her life so bad.
Max Mayfield (Stranger Things) - MAX! my sweetie pie max <3 I love her so much. She's such a brat, she reminds me a lot of my little sister who I don't always get along with but love a whole lot. She's very cool, first person to introduce El to the concept of autonomy which we love her for, AND she gets to date Lucas (who's really Goals as a partner, if I could I would count him here too).
Blue Sargent (The Raven Cycle) - I don't know how to articulate how I feel about Blue exactly, like. her whole backstory is amazing (being raised in a house full of lady psychics while NOT being psychic herself but having Other abilities) and then she just gets looped into the weirdest plot possible and just hangs with it like a pro. Lot of respect <3 also every outfit she wears in the books seems like exactly something I'd wear.
Percy Jackson (Percy Jackson and the Olympians) - God, I love this kid so much. The narration of those books is peak, Rick Riordan put so much PERSONALITY into Percy and he's just. Such a cute kid. He loves his mom and wants nothing more than for her to be safe. He's quippy and very funny and he knows it. He's genuinely scary at times. Amazing character.
Ravi Singh (A Good Girl's Guide To Murder) - honestly such a good sport, if some girl turned up at my door and started grilling me about the murders my brother supposedly committed I would NOT handle it that well. He's a sweet and caring guy, a good boyfriend, funny, and also helps solve murders. Very cool 👍
Grace Chasity (Starkid's Hatchetverse) - A literal bible-thumping puriteen in a way that's genuinely so funny. Manslaughter? A-ok. Dismembering a body? Sure. Terrorizing summer camp with an axe? Why not! Carrying someone's books before marriage? Showering naked?? Smoking weed??? You're literal satan! She's so funny and I would genuinely hate her irl but as a character she's amazing (and Angela Giarratana KILLS her performance it's amazing).
i tag: @prodogg @peony-pearl @futuristicrenaisancebeliever @feruchemical @clearancecreedwatersurvival @haboat @juhanis-litterbox @im-smart-i-swear @takingback-thepenguin
And anyone else who wants to participate! (And if I tagged you don't feel pressured I just tagged everyone I could remember -)

Some mention how they didn't race swaped Triton as well in the little mermaid...
Can i remind you that Triton was the son of Poseidon and Amphitrite?? The literal Gods of the sea in Greek mythology? Race swapping him too would be too much and would only add fuel to the fire.
It's too bad Disney instead of casting Halle as an different heroine with her own story they again used a beloved classic to create controversy and political debate over skin colour.
It's quite good they cast a Mediterranean actor for the role of Triton! It's... an improvement even - which I think happened accidentally 😂 They wanted to make a fictional Carribbean (from what I've seen) and so the Spanish-French type could have matched their vision. I....can see their reasoning but I find it really odd.
Also, regional gods and heroes are immersed in the culture and people who formed their worship. Triton is the same case. (And even his name is Greek, obviously). That's the reason you look for a Chinese person to play a Chinese god or warrior. (Or at least an East Asian person who looks like they could've come from China).
If your reasoning starts and ends with what needs to be represented in Hollywood, then you are not actually respectful of that foreign culture. With that reasoning, if in 100 years there's an abundant of Chinese people in the US media, they "should" start casting other races to play the Chinese deities. That's not how it freaking works 🙄
As for the changes of old characters... it's just weird, man. I absolutely do not mind seeing minorites excelling on screen. What is weird is how they re-skin old stuff all the time "but make it diverse". It's not the end of the world but it's obviously a thing we can talk about. And big companies use this discourse and discord as marketing often so it's not unreasonable to accuse them of pandering and using minorities as fame tokens.
Would I love to see more women on Greek TV? Yes! Will I cringe with a Greek show that makes Karaiskakis or Erotokritos women and that claims to "correct" history and bring modernity? 100% yes. Greeks are also a cultural and racial minority in many countries worldwide. That doesn't mean I want to see them replacing other minorities in media if they don't look the part. (Other minorities have played Greeks because they looked the part. Hell, now Javier Bardem plays a Greek deity and it's...mostly fine)
Just... please make new stories with great diverse characters and with plots and character arcs that make sense!
