Cassini Spacecraft Oil, 18 x 24 in, 2018 In our pursuit to understand the solar system we find ourselves in, we sent an explorer on a billion mile journey to the Saturnian system. The Cassini Spacecraft sent back amazing new data and images of Saturn and it's 62 known moons, 46 of which were unknown when Cassini left. We learned that the moon, Enceladus, may have everything it needs to support life deep in it's global ocean, Titan has a liquid methane sea, and so much more.

In 2017, low on fuel after twenty years in space and so much information gained, Cassini took several dives between Saturn and it's rings to learn a little more before it's mission came to an end. To avoid possible microbial contamination of any of Saturn's moons, Cassini dove and burned up in Saturn's atmosphere, while sending back it's final data. Prints: https://robrey.storenvy.com

I created these images of Cassini several years ago while developing a 20ft mural (final slide) for the Project Design Center at @nasajpl. A place where space missions begin. I was inspired by the countless spreadsheets and colorful charts that are used in the earliest stages of development. In queste ultime ore della Missione Spaziale Cassini voglio dedicare questo post a due momenti importanti della mia vita: la mia tesi di Laurea, che aveva proprio la sonda Cassini nel suo titolo e al modellino della sonda stessa fatta con il lego da mio figlio Marco. 

Il relatore della mia tesi fu il Prof. Marco Pedrazzi, oggi  professore ordinario presso la Facoltà di Scienze Politiche dell’Università degli Studi di Milano, specializzato in disciplina internazionale delle attività spaziali: da lui sentii parlare per la prima volta della sono Cassini, che partì nell’autunno 1997. Decisi quindi di sviluppare la mia tesi sulla missione della sonda Cassini nel quadro degli accordi internazionali di cooperazione in material spaziale. L’argomento mi appassionò moltissimo e involontariamente trasmisi questa mia passione a mio figlio che, benché bambino (aveva 7 anni), incominciò ad essere curioso di spazio, pianeti, missioni spaziali. Il giorno della discussione della mia tesi Marco si presentò con il primo modello della sonda, precedente a quello qui pubblicato. Grazie a questa mia tesi sono riuscita a visitare l’Alenia di Torino, che su commissione dell’Agenzia Spaziale Italiana ASI sviluppò parti del modulo Huygens.

Insieme a Marco ho seguito tutto il viaggio di questa incredibile missione, iniziata il 15 ottobre 1997 dallo sforzo congiunto di NASA; ESA e ASI e progettata per eseguire l’esplorazione sistematica del sistema di Saturno e del suo satellite maggiore Titano.  La Missione avrebbe dovuto concludersi nel 2010, dopo un prolungamento di due anni rispetto alla data iniziale di presunto termine. Invece, a venti anni dal lancio, Cassini terminerà la propria vita il 15 settembre 2017, con una traiettoria programmata per entrare nell'atmosfera di Saturno con conseguente distruzione della sonda.

In tutti questi anni Cassini ci ha mandato immagini meravigliose dello spazio e di Saturno grazie alle quali abbiamo continuato a sognare un giorno di poter raggiungere lo spazio più remoto.
