It took a few people to hold the imp down. It thrashed wildly—snapping its teeth and growling deep in its gut. Jade pressed the hot metal against its lower abdomen. He always hated the sound of sizzling skin. The invasive smell. The imp huffed and grit its teeth. "Not much of a screamer," one of the other aids commented.

Jade pulled the branding iron back. Lines had melted away, exposing the skin beneath. It glistened—stark against the bits of charred flesh.

"It appears not."

WINKTOBER DAY 31: Free Choice (Pero Tovar)

Here it is, the last one. Thank you all so so much for following me along on this little experiment. It’s been fun and I love being able to accomplish such a weird little project.

The prompt for today is “free choice” and so to wink it, I’m taking those words as the literal prompt. When I think about free choice, it is in the struggle against fate, and who in my library is dealing with that more than Pero in Branded? You don’t need to know anything about Branded for this other than it’s basically a reluctant soulmates series about Pero and a lady mystic/prognosticator...

If he looks long enough at you, he thinks he can see his future.

He doesn’t know what to think of these visions of yours–the ones you’ve seen, the ones you’ve allowed him to see–but he believes you when you tell him where they came from and that they are divine and that you are…you are…

You have never said that you are anything more than mortal, this is just his own invention and he needs to shake his head, clear his mind, and remember a time before he knew he was tied to you by the stars.

He asks himself if he did not know of the prophecy, would he still have saved you from your burning house and he finds that he answers himself yes, he did and he would again, by free choice.

He asks himself if he did not know of the prophecy, would he still prefer to have you on his horse rather than William’s that he may keep you close and safe and he finds that he answers himself yes, he does and he will continue to, by free choice.

He asks himself if he did not know of the prophecy, would he still be drawn to you, to be besotted by you, would he choose to love you and he answers himself that it does not matter, whether by free choice or not his heart has never felt so fitted to anyone else, and if it is the stars’ work and not his own, then he will be content to let the stars choose for him, for they have chosen well, and what they have chosen, he thinks, isn’t what would otherwise be free...but what would otherwise be priceless....
