The king sat idly at the edge of the port Townsend shore. The Lighthouse is towering in comparison to his smaller frame. In a fruitless attempt to keep himself entertained he threw a couple of smooth pebbles into the water; Hoping that one would skip the water a few times…on the last throw the rock skipped three times before smacking against another object. “Owwww” a voice shrieked, cutting through his meaningless thoughts. The rock had hit the one person he had been waiting all this time for. A pang of guilt hit his chest, he hoped that rock didn’t hurt their pretty head too much. Their head emerged from the darkness of the sea, the surface tension of the water breaking over their hair and running down their face until the neck and shoulders were exposed to the early morning sunlight. Their skin was iridescent in the light, shimmering with every move their body made. Thomas loved to watch their body move against the waves, they lapped ever so gently against their glowing skin. 

“Back again…Thomas?” they sang, adding a little more emphasis on Thomas. Yes, this was probably the twentieth time this week he had waltzed his way down to the beach just to see them. He absolutely HATED the water, it was cold and wet…it freaked him out if he couldn’t see what was under him/around him at all times. But for them…he would stand at the water's edge and risk his paws getting a little wet. Just to get a glimpse of them.

The problem with Dead Boy Detectives is that I don't think I can let go of any of the season 1 characters. So even when we get season 2, I need them to still visit Tragic Mick's Magic Tricks shop. I need the Cat King to still court Edwin. I need Monty to deliver their mail.

Sort of bums me out that so many people didn't seem to Get the Cat King so here are my thoughts:

So let's start with Edwin's crime. He uses something the cat desires (a sardine) to lure the cat to him and then uses an enchanted string to trap the cat with magic. He demands the answer to a question in exchange for its release. Edwin knows it is dangerous to use magic on a cat, that it violates Rules but he does it anyway.

Binding a creature and agreeing to set them free under a certain condition is very Classic Fairytale. its also a favourite trope of Neil Gaiman's (he did not write this show but his influence is there). In both the Sandman and his novel Stardust (and the film adaptation) trapping a creature with magic and demanding a task/favour in exchange for their freedom is an extremely important plot point. Edwin binding a cat and demanding an answer in exchange is exactly in line with this Fairytale trope

And so is the Cat Kings response. The Cat King is a trickster. What he does to Edwin is exactly what Edwin did to one of his subjects. He entices Edwin, he binds him with magic and when Edwin demands to be free he turns his own words against him "why all the fuss for one little spell?" Edwin did something wrong. He imposed his will/magic on another creature and the Cat King is punishing him for it in a way that is poetic. Its fairytale. its trickster. its classic.

I've also seen people complain that the task Edwin was given 'count all the cats' is 'impossible'...except its fucking not. Edwin does it. He does it so well he actually BEATS the Cat King ("you didn't count yourself" Are.You.Kidding.Me. Classic!Fairytale!Vibes!)

The Cat Kings choice to bind Edwin to Port Townsend is good on so many levels. From a storytelling perspective it forces characters who can travel anywhere in the world to stay in one place, and increases the stakes for these characters who are supposed to be on the run. From a genre perspective...its an excellent use of fairytale tropes using both Rules of magic, a protagonist who is unkind to a seemingly weak creature who is punished by a more powerful law, a binding, a task to complete, etc

Which just leaves the character perspective which it ALSO does really fucking well and introduces the final aspect to the Cat Kings character. He's seductive. He is responsible for Edwin, 100 years old ghost boy, finally unpacking his internalized homophpbia. he is the catalyst (cat pun not intended)

He pushes Edwin, challenges him, at times literally forces the truth out of Edwin, but he really never does violate his consent. Significantly Edwin is attracted to him, like its an important part of his character that he is. He may not like the Cat King but he is attracted to him!

The Cat King is such a great example of a trickster, a morally grey character who imposes a sense of justice on Edwin after he crosses a line, but also has his own selfish interests and meddles. Hes so important to the plot of the show, to Edwin's character arc, to the genre.

And he's just fun. Unapologetically queer, powerful, complicated. Silly little outfits. Petty cat behavior. Deep heart.

Some of you just didn't get it. And I'm sorry for you. because the Cat King is Excellent actually.

Ok, ok, so, I read this post (and loved it) and the idea was instantaneous. Maybe I'll write it, maybe I won't, but I need it written down, so if anyone is interested.

Imagine a case of human sacrifices. The boys are called (Niko alive and with them!) to this case through a ghost who was sacrificed and seeks justice and can pay well. Then they find out that these people are being sacrificed to the Cat King. A witch turned one of his cats into a human (Esther and Monty style) and the cat becomes a bit fanatical and sacrifices people as gifts, secret admirer style. Edwin is clearly jealous. And the Cat King helps them with the case, just to get close to his ghost. In the middle of the case or when it ends, Edwin admits (by accident) that he was jealous and the Cat King simply loves that fact. Then he asks permission for a kiss, and it happens. And I would love a more explicit scene from them with lots of dirty talk and compliment kink, but I'll take any crumbs.

First time: in the middle of the case there may even be the cat finding out and going after Edwin and King Cat becoming super protective (and the team, obviously) and having another kiss in front of the people or later, in private. Or the second version, after the affair, like farewell sex, and Edwin talking about how he loved it to Charles or Niko and there's a cute moment of friendship.

Also in the scene there are two possibilities, either the boys and Crystal still living there with Niko to stay with her while she recovers or Niko finding out about the case through this ghost she found in the library or I don't know and talking to the boys and them coming from London (hence the farewell sex) and then returning there, or even the four of them living in London and the ghost going after them (or even Gato Rei asking for help) to ask for help and them going to city of Gato Rei (I forgot the name) and then returning to London (or maybe they stay and open an office?).

Anyway, maybe I thought about this a little too much.

Do you have any cat King headcanons because I have a few that I wanna share with someone

1. He hisses at people he doesn't like

2. He can get high off catnip but it doesn't last so he has to smoke a lot of it

3. He takes in any house cat that got abandoned by their owner

4. He loves the kittens that are in his group

5.( This is kinda Nsfw) He goes into heat/rut like a normal cat does

I'm sorry this is kinda long and that the last one is nsfw and that I'm probably annoying but I just love cat king so much and want to ramble to someone

Sorry for taking so fucking long to answer this.

But I'm like, absolutely in love with Cat King having actual cat mannerisms.

1. Probably only cleans himself in cat form.

2. Has several cats that came from abusive homes.

3. Has broken into homes to rescue said cats, and will do it again.

4. Has probably stolen fish from Jenny when she's at the market.

5. His kingdom has like, cuddle sessions where they all bundle up together.

6. Most of his cat citizens have respective shops and people that leave food out on their porch for them.

7. The kingdom members provide for eachother, and Cat King genuinely cares about all of them.

8. The Cat King can genuinely tell what a person is like right off the bat (enforcing pan Genderfluid cat king)

9. If anyone kicks or is outwardly rude to his cats he places little hexes on them.

10. He has cat's that hang out at Tragik Mick's shop, and Mick feeds them, cause he feels that "if he can't be happy, at least someone else should."

(yes I had to link Tragik Mick in somehow, I love him and he deserves happiness.)
