Thought Process for “Oath of Ancient Freedom” and “Eve of Ancient Freedom”
November 5, 2022
Warning: mutilation, violence
——
oh my god there’s an actual in-story song associated with the Bard and the rebellion??
Weapon Description: Official English translation, official Chinese text (below)
Oath of Ancient Freedom / Freedom-Sworn
.
My Translation
“Should someone pluck out your tongue, you still can sing with your eyes.”
“Should someone blinds both your eyes, you can still see with your ears.”
“Should someone make a futile attempt to lay bare the future, then invite him to raise a class.”
“Even if tomorrow doesn’t come, the song of this moment will still ring forever.”
TURNING IT INTO A POEM WITH METER
Meter: -/- - / - - / - - /
Dactylic trimeter with unstressed syllable at start and stressed at end (DACTYL FOR THREE WHICH IS THE CEILIA THE BARD WORE)
Edit: It’s actually a catalectic amphibrachic tetrameter (-/- four times with incomplete foot at the end)
Last line -/-/-/-/
Iambic tetrameter. (FOUR WINDS??)

(FUCK IM TEARING UP AT THE LAST LINE AHHH)
Official English
"If someone plucks out your tongue, you can still sing with your eyes."
"If someone blinds you in both eyes, you can still see with your ears."
"If someone conspires to destroy tomorrow, then raise them a glass,"
"For even if tomorrow dies, this song shall live on."
My Translation
“Should someone pluck out your tongue, you still can sing with your eyes.”
“Should someone blinds both your eyes, you can still see with your ears.”
“But should someone dare to steal the freedom you sing and seek for,
“——never, ever tolerate that.”
TURNING IT INTO A POEM WITH METER
Meter: -/- - / - - / - - /
Dactylic trimeter with unstress similar at start and stressed at end
(DACTYL FOR THREE WHICH IS THE CEILIA THE BARD WORE)
Edit: Actually it’s in catalectic amphibrachic tetrameter
Last two lines: Meter
-/-/-/-/
-/- - / - - / -
Iambic tetrameter. (FOUR WINDS)
Second one is near reversal of previous trimeter (LIKE REVERSING THE CEILILA FOR OVERTHROWING)
And obviously “And fight back. For Mondstadt, forever.” is a reference to the Gunnhildr Clan’s motto, “For Mondstadt, always.”
XA/AA/BB/CC
.
IM GONNA CRY
GOD THE FINAL LINES
AAA
Official English
"If someone plucks out your tongue, you can still sing with your eyes."
"If someone blinds you in both eyes, you can still see with your ears."
"But if anyone dares to steal your song, the freedom you yearn for,"
"— That alone, that alone shall never do!"
OKAY SO IN THE WEAPON DESCRIPTION THE FIRST SONG IS SUNG AS FOR TOASTS AND DURING FAREWELL DINNERS
“过去曾有一首流行的祝酒与饯行之歌”
AND THE SECOND SONG IS STILL THE SAME SONG BUT SANG FOR VENTI, NAMELESS BARD, RAGNVINDR, AMOS, AND GUNNHILDR AS THEY ASCENDED THE TOWER TO FIGHT DECARABIAN

Ah, so this meter (which I used in Oath of Ancient Freedom and Eve of Ancient Freedom): - / - - / - - / - - /
Is not actually some augmented version of a dactylic trimeter
But rather, a catalectic amphibrachic tetrameter (unstressed-stressed-unstressed meter repeated four times with the final unstressed foot missing)
Fun.
