we'll burn it & we'll build it again - a mix tape I made a few days ago. Just for myself! Because I wanted to!
I spent as much time making the art/insert for the case as I did making the tape itself. First I printed a coloring page of Spider-Punk, then colored it, scanned it, resized it, and reprinted it. Then I collaged it along with the speech bubble and the ransom note-style letters.
The tape doesn't really have anything to do with Spider-Punk, it's just that I saw Across the Spider-Verse on Monday and am now obsessed with one Hobie Brown, aka Spider-Punk. I did throw on a few songs as a specific nod to him; namely "Lean Times for Heroes," "Save Your Generation," and "Young, Gifted, Black, in Leather." And I think he'd dig most of the music on here. Cuz it's really good.

Ska 🎶
I'm not super familiar with Jamaican/"first wave" ska, which is now something I should and will correct.
I am a medium fan of ska punk musically (that is, the 2 Tone and Third Wave periods) - I think that some white bands in the genre just have a vibe, call it the "Goldfinger Energy," that can be very offputting in a way that can be difficult to describe. I think that's just kind of the result of being from California the sorts of nostalgic or appropriative* emphases that ska placed in its styles and fashion, as it became much more "commercial"/amenable to pop crossover and decreasingly Caribbeanized. but I have always had a fun time at ska shows, the vibe is positive and the audiences are always passionate and enjoyable to people-watch in like a big city, you can see a bunch of different subcultures collide really noticeably which I think is interesting

The Specials' debut record kicks ass and was also produced by Elvis Costello, who I love as a producer. The Selecter and the English Beat are also really great. I love Streetlight Manifesto to death, particularly their first and third records - when my dad wouldn't let me go see them (for logistical reasons rather than finger-waggy ones) and then they broke up I was so annoyed. Catbite is one of my favorite contemporary bands that I am really excited to see more from, and their lead vocalist is so fun. Fishbone are consistently underrated, though their ska influences kind of came and went. I am more into Jeff Rosenstock's recent power-pop/pop-punk/singer-songwriter stuff but I like when he digs back into his ska experience, and when he remade his whole album in the style it was proof he still had it. I like Operation Ivy and Rancid musically but I hate the bands as people because Tim Armstrong is a bad person and the rest of the band enabled him. I am not the biggest Sublime fan BUT 40 oz to Freedom is so sick to me despite some of its tacky or ill-conceived moments. Like I love how sloppy and raw and messy some of the performances and the sequencing are, and the songs still really stick in your brain. shoutout to Skatune Network/JER they're extremely cool.

yes! not the biggest ska fan in the world but i do like it :] especially as im half jamaican, i know people dont really think of the original ska genre when they think of ska punk but two tone and its founding principals of racial solidarity between the jamaican diaspora descendants of the windrush generation and the white working class in the uk that eventually gave way to ska punk is just really important to me as a concept.
i like catbite, we are the union, and jer! i dont listen to a lot of ska like i said but those are some bands ive listened to and enjoy :)

number one guy for me rn is jeff rosenstock! most recent album hellmode is a work of art but also so is all of his stuff (i am deeply biased and have been listening to him for like a decade now??). no dream is my fav of his, but worry was also critically acclaimed. he’s more punk-y and ska-y than radhos but also very good
los campesinos! is i think somewhat known amidst the wc community (and it looks like they’re planning on putting something new out soon???? idk) but they’ve been a fav for years and years. love all their stuff but we are beautiful, we are doomed is prob my fav album of theirs. all their albums are fantastic tho
and then just some other bands i enjoy but remember sports, charly bliss, hop along, oso oso, macseal, cayetana, adult mom, halfnoise, dazey and the scouts, catbite…….the list goes on LOL

Sometimes it's easier to make lists to put the year in perspective:

Organzing and finally having our in person Midwest Perzine Fest in Chicago in October

4 Cool Gay / queer artists and for pride this year (2023)
I wanted to help some queer and ally musicians boost their songs. As a trans-woman I think its important to understand that pride is important as much as change. Focusing on the hardships we have faced is very important but our victories are much more. So here are some (4) artists I (rose) recommend for pride.
Mikie mayo (any/all pronouns).
Mikie mayo (aka bunny boy) is a definitely hard to pin down Philly musician and occasional roller-coaster content creator. Mikie can be seen dabbling anything from indie pop, easycore, scene metalcore with bay area and internet rapper legend Lil B, scene electropop hyperpop, eurodance and dance pop about roller coasters and go karts, to beach pop, generally being pretty much a banger machine. Mikie's music is like ice cream w/ your favorite toppings on a warm summer day, very good and sugary sweet.

We Are The Union
I'm gonna cut to the chase on this one. If you want an emotional experience as a trans woman / transfemme or really any trans person to make you not feel alone and like ska / ska punk listen to Ordinary Life by we are the union. the first time I heard morbid obsessions I was working a part time (as full time really) at home depot in my small hometown in pa. I felt like as a trans woman and generally depressed person I couldn't be myself and go back to school. My boss there was the most transphobic piece of shit, and he always misgendered me and but me down. it wasn't until I quit that job and when I shifted to being myself inspired by my thoughts at the time that I accepted that I was fully a trans woman. I really related and still relate to Miss Reade Wolcott and her struggles with gender identity and be a trans woman in a transphobic world but also like her I am who I am. I would also could relate to jer and their struggles of being boxed in music genres and having what they love constantly undermined and diminished / not taken what I have to say seriously as a queer person.

Jisei (leda xo its/its and alexis she/they)
Jisei are the best queergrind band I have ever heard. the most raw queer emotions I have ever heard. Some of the best riffs I have ever heard. Imagine deathcore for the girls and the gays. The duo also make the most real lyrics I have heard in a while. For example one of I think the most topical songs they have had is "Pull Yrself Up by Your Pleasers". Pull Yrself Up by Your Pleasers being about christian nationalism and the alt-right abusing and tearing away the seperation of church and state without seeing a hint of irony. I hate the "Just asking questions" transphobia , and even though that might seem like solely a usa proving that Jisei hailing from vancouver proves that transphobia is a worldwide issue and if so called "cis allies" aren't for us 100+ %, fuck 'em.

last on the list here we have the one of the most popular queer scenecore bands ever. see you space cowboy. the most gay and hard band at the same time they well as sass as much as hardcore. Picture if saosin, the devil wears prada, or thrice, and/or attack attack! were queer and trans and say exclaimed faggot as fun mosh call. That would be see you space cowboy, started by brother and sister connie and ethan, seeyouspacecowboy is one of the most popular bands in screamo, metalcore and hardcore, and scenecore all at the same time. will excellent songwriting and angsty queer lyrics complimented with crushing riffs and piercing panic chords, seeyouspacecowboy will worm your way into your heart and crush your rib-cage at the same time. As a fan of vocalist connie sgarbossa, she was one of the people who helped me come out as a trans woman in the first place. The fact that a queer trans woman who screamed and force herself to the front inspirational. Yeah the fact we have to be forced to be heard kinda sucks, but it can be done and her presence in the scene made that very well known. Also it kinda helps that they spread the word on trans liberation and mental health from and trans and queer perspective and what can be done to combat transphobia in a very passionate and heartfelt way. I highly recommend their whole catolgue from their sass/whitebelt eras, to their metallic hardcore stuff, to mall scenecore era currently.
Genres: Scenecore, sasscore, whitebelt, queercore, "screamo", mall screamo, metalcore, scene metalcore, hardcore, metallic hardcore.
FFO: attack attack!, tdwp, i set my friends on fire, lacerated, thrice, norma jean, and underoath etc.
pride should be celebrated.
one last thing from a trans woman,
gender doesn't always equal sex.
gendered pronouns / pronouns in general have existed since the beginning of time.
drag queens aren't always trans.
trans people don't care about where you pee and where you are, they just wanna pee in their gendered bathroom.
cis isn't a slur.
terf isn't a slur.
leave trans people alone.

Hello!
The Music Shelf has gained some new followers. Mustard appreciates you following them. Just in case any human is not familiar with Music Shelf with Mustard; it began two years ago and was the brainchild of North Carolina band “Carhop” (who has unfortunately gone their separate ways) while Mustard was helping promote independent musicians on TikTok.
Since then Music Shelf has had the pleasure of interviewing over 130+ artists including bands such as Mustard Plug, Catbite, Whitney Tai, and so many more.
Twitter played a big role in the growth of Music Shelf. In fact, Mustard believes some of their new followers are from there. Hello again! Specifically, Ska Twitter. Ska Twitter was so inclusive and welcoming of Mustard. It was on Twitter as well where Mustard met the incredibly talented Mister Substitute. Mister Substitute’s reviews and general writing have further helped grow Music Shelf. Mustard is grateful and thankful for Music Shelf.

Oh yes we're really ranking and skanking, I saw one of my favorites, Fishbone recently. Speaking of favorites I had some tikka masala gopi and taro boba tea today and I can assuredly say it's food! !!!!!! I love Fishbone!!!!!!!! I saw them last December they were so good! I initially planned on going to the show because I wanted to see one of the openers because they’d never done a show in Canada before (and haven’t since!), so I had to dm my ska friends like “I have a concert in a month please give me some album recs so I can be prepared for the Fishbone part of the show.” I think my favourite song of theirs is Party At Ground Zero? It’s always relevant lol 🙃
Back in October I got to see Catbite, who are a New Tone ska band from Philadelphia! Very good show, they were one of three openers and all four bands were awesome.
Right now I’m cooking chicken and rice, it’s gonna be verrrry tasty in about half an hour. I’m really craving pizza pockets (Canadian, similar to hot pockets but exclusively pizza stuff. Like mini calzones!) right now, but I’m not getting any of those until I go grocery shopping in a couple weeks.
I will admit I am not at all into boba, mainly because of texture issues, but it seems like a very fun drink.
Okay I should go check on my chicken in the oven now, byeeeeeeeeee! 🐓✌️☮️😎🤍🍚
