When ranking a Dragon Ball movie, I use the four Cs method
Listed in order of importance:
Characters (how much I like everybody in the movie + their dynamics. This includes heros and villains)
Coolness (how're the fight scenes? How hyped am I? Am I going to be quoting it until the day I die?)
Concept (Is something new and fun introduced? Or are they just gonna reveal some new space dickhead/Frieza is back and the solution is 'Punch Harder')
Coherency (does it make sense? Does previous DB lore back it up?)
So for instance, a movie that is very cool and fun to see (subjective) with characters I like to watch do stuff but that makes no sense literally at all will rank higher than a movie with a well-put together plot but with characters I've seen do shit all the time
It's why I have a fondness for Bio-Broly even though it sucks. I like when background characters get to fuck around and I think the idea of a fucked up Broly clone rules.
Concept basically measures 'is this just a worse version of a canon arc?' eg Cooler, Android 13, Tree of Might, that one DB movie I can't remember but also ends in the panty wish; else it measures how many times has dragon ball done this before, like 'there is a guy from space and he is strong' like Broly's Return

Do you feel like ranking DBZ movie villains by how interested you would be in a movie that reinvents them for the current canon/state of the franchise, like what Broly got?
Alternatively, by how interested you would be if you could write the movie, without having to worry about how you expect Toei would actually write the characters in question.
#1 - Lord Slug. He and his movie suffer tremendously from the whole "Just rehashing Piccolo-Daimao" thing but the stuff they do add to the character is really interesting and fun.
He's an alien vampire who blots out the sun as part of his sinister plan to convert the Earth into a sports car he can drive around and look cool in. He's defeated by Goku drawing the energy of the sun into a Genki-Dama to erase his vampiric ass, which is an established obscure ability of the technique that no one has ever done anything with.
Tumblr media
Kaio literally said with words from his mouth that Goku can use the sun to make a Genki-Dama. Goku had to make a desperate Genki-Dama once on a planet with three suns. And this has never, ever come up. Except against Namekian Dracula and his army of vampires.
This is the top of my list of things to formally canonize a "The Good Version" of.
2 - Turles. Tree of Might is also a film that had a lot of interesting elements about it. Turles's plot is underdeveloped because of the film following manga rehash rails so closely but, like Slug, the original stuff they did with him is fascinating.
Turles is presented as a foil to Goku. Where Goku has studied and mastered the divine arts of the gods, Turles somehow broke into the heavens and stole away with an item of immense power. He's a bandit who pillaged the heavens for power and then wreaked havoc on the mortal universe. How did he do that? That's so cool.
And it sets up a unique rivalry between him and Goku, pitting Goku's divine techniques against the incredible powers that Turles possesses but doesn't fully understand.
Also, like the Solar Genki-Dama, the part where Goku destroys the Tree of Might not by hitting it with an attack but by using the technique's genki-harvesting feature to pull all the world's stolen genki back out of the tree? Genuinely brilliant application of an obscure feature of the technique we don't really think about.
And and I just desperately want it to be canon that low-class Saiyans only have a handful of mass-produced faces and body types between them. That's the film's explanation for why Turles looks like Goku. It's because Goku is an assembly line Barbie doll you can buy off the shelf at Walmart, as opposed to the $50,000 custom-made luxury item that is Vegeta.
3 - Cooler: Cooler, I'm less enthusiastic about but there are ways that he can be interesting. I've speculated about some ways that they could go about adapting Cooler to DBS canon because he's always seemed, after Broly, to be the most likely candidate.
But honestly, Cooler's never really been that interesting to me. He's a knock-off Frieza in the same way Slug's a knock-off Piccolo but there isn't really anything unique I can point to and go, "EXCEPT there's this really interesting stuff that they could really push and make an interesting villain out of." He's... just Frieza with the serial numbers filed off.
Even my pitches for Cooler basically just amount to, "Create a new character who is Frieza's brother and name him Cooler."
Alright. So, from here we get into characters I'm not disinterested in necessarily but I don't think could really work.
4 - Androids 13, 14, and 15. These three can only interestingly fit into a very specific span of time. Popping out during the week build-up to the Cell Games is basically the perfect placement for them, because the Cell arc is the only time when "Oh no, EVEN MORE evil Androids by Dr. Gero!" really works as a story.
I like them. They're fun, and they could be even moreso if given a chance. But their window of opportunity is slim. Canonizing them would make more sense as an interquel than a sequel. And we don't really need an interquel for them, because that movie already exists and is called "Extreme Battle!! The Three Great Super Saiyans".
5 - Dr. Wheelo. Similarly, Dr. Wheelo has already been pretty thoroughly cannibalized by Dr. Gero and Zamasu. "Super-old mad scientist Dr. Brain-in-a-Jar and his bio-android minions plot to steal Goku's body" is a story that would feel like it's rehashing material we already have, even though he fucking came first.
And here we go with the ones I'm just not interested in at all.
6 - Garlic Jr. Basically the only thing interesting about him is "How do we defeat a guy who's immortal?" But the answer to that question is always bullshit. "He opens the Negative Zone and defeats himself." "Goku has a pager in his pocket he can just use to call God and ask him to please delete this plot from the story." "Do the thing to make him not immortal anymore and then it's not a problem."
There's the Mafuba but at this point that just feels cheap. There's not really a way to have the characters walk up and hit the villain with a technique they've all known about for decades and could have done at any moment, but to keep it in reserve as an eleventh hour THERE IS NO OTHER OPTION desperation play even though they could have just done it at any point in the fight.
Characters keeping the winning play in their back pocket for no other reason than to make the fight more dramatic is exactly the kind of thing that I go off on modern Dragon Ball for.
So. Yeah. The answer to "How do we defeat the immortal villain?" is that there is no good answer and we shouldn't write characters into that situation. This character's one and only utility is to force the movie to end stupidly.
(Honestly, Gomah is probably the closest to a good version of Garlic Jr. you could ever get.)
7 - Janemba. Janemba isn't really a character. He's a vehicle to facilitate the idea of villains from Hell breaking out and starting a commotion. That's all he is. It's an idea that Toei liked so much they did it three separate times: Once for the Anoyoichi Budokai filler arc, once for Fusion Reborn, and once for the Super Android 17 arc of GT.
But my beef with it is twofold. First. Like. The mythology of Dragon Ball is set up specifically to disallow plots like this. Villains don't keep their bodies when they die. They become a powerless soul like all the other powerless souls. Keeping your body is a rare and special privilege, and is the only way to retain your power.
This cannot happen.
The other issue is that it's boring. The escalating powerscale of Dragon Ball means that yesterday's titanic threat isn't that big of a deal tomorrow. The way this always works out is like. "Oh no, Raditz and Nappa are back! But also Gohan's like 87 quintillion times more powerful than them so he just flicks them both in the head and they explode and die instantly."
Reclimbing old mountains isn't as fun in practice as it sounds on paper. Oh no, what if Goku had to fight Tambourine again? How could Super Saiyan Blue Goku ever manage to defeat Tambourine?
And without that element... there's just nothing else to Janemba as a threat. He is the least interesting thing that happens in his movie. A vehicle to facilitate a plot that's now been done to death and hasn't been good a single time, and a fusion that is no longer bold new territory to tread.
8 - Bojack. The only interesting thing that happens in Bojack's movie is a martial arts tournament that Bojack isn't even involved with. Like Janemba, there isn't really a lot to Bojack and his crew. They're just... some villains. In the wide world of Dragon Ball villains, here are some more of them.
And finally, closing out this list with an honorable mention.
N/A - Hirudegarn. I actually don't remember this movie so I can't say how interesting it would be to create a canon version of Tapion and Hirudegarn.

Requiem for a Bio-Broly
Tumblr media
So I looked at the new Sparking Zero lineup, and it's currently at 184 characters, if you count the three DLC guys. And once again, Bio-Broly did not make the cut.
I'm not really surprised, but it is kind of interesting that this guy has never made it into any of these fighting games. He's in Dragon Ball Heroes and Dokkan stuff, and I'm pretty sure that's because those card-based style of games need as much variety as possible, which is why they do all those what-if characters and scenarios.
It only really surprised me when Budokai Tenkaichi 3 skipped him, because that game had a ginormous roster, to the point where it was tough to even guess how they'd fill all the slots. And unsurprisingly, often-overlooked movie villains like Garlic Junior and Dr. Wheelo were on the roster. But not Bio-Broly. I think that's when I first got intrigued about his exclusion from these games, because BT3 was the first game to get all of the other Z movie villains in it, and that made Bio-Broly conspicuous by his absence.
The later games had smaller rosters, but they also seemed eager to add some special attraction, usually a character who hadn't been used before. Raging Blast 2 had Hatchiyack, but also Androids 13 and 14. Battle of Z really touted Beerus and Whis, since I'm pretty sure that was their video game debut. And Xenoverse 2 has been adding DLC characters for the better part of a decade now. You'd think one of them might toss in Bio-Broly, if only for the novelty of it, but no.
I don't want to sound like some kind of Bio-Broly fan. The character sucks, and so does his movie. But he was still a movie villain. Like, that's kind of a special status in these games. They get used as bonus stage bosses or special unlockable guys, or whatever. GT is pretty awful too, but it's still fun to see Omega Shenron and Baby in these games. I would argue the games are the only time GT characters are really handled properly. I'm sure someone could come up with a cool story mode segment involving Bio-Broly. The quality of his movie is irrelevant.
So with this game, Sparking Zero, I figured he was probably going to finally get his spot, if only because there were so many spots to fill, and why not toss him in there, if only to get a complete set of movie baddies? But it looks like he got shafted again. I mean, they could still put him in as DLC, and I would think they'd just about have to. I mean, they probably want to do lots of DLC characters like with Xenoverse 2, but they already put so many characters in the base game, so who's left? They could do Cell Max, and some Daima characters, toss in some OG Dragon Ball and more Tournament of Power guys, but it's weird that we're even talking about this when there's a Z-Movie guy they've never used.
Like, imagine if Metal Cooler never got to be in any of these games. Everybody else, but for some reason Metal Cooler just never shows up. Movie 5 Cooler's there, and so is his final form, but no Metal Cooler, no explanation given. That'd be weird, right? After a while you'd wonder why that is. I mean, Cooler's henchmen have made it into some of the games. There's room for Metal Cooler, so why wouldn't they use it?
I think it's widely understood that Movie 11 is one of the worst, if not the worst of the DBZ movies. But I've never really seen anyone actively hating on it. It's more forgettable than offensive, and yet, Bio-Broly's exclusion from the games makes me wonder if that movie did more damage to the brand than I've ever known. Like, maybe it performed very poorly, or there's a lot of hard feelings over that production, so everyone at Toei just keeps the character as obscure as possible. I mean, they put him in the Dokkan and DBH games, but you never see like ads for that. Maybe they're worried that putting Bio-Broly in one of these roster reveal trailers would be so offensive to fans that it would hurt the sales? That seems pretty far-fetched, but that's where my mind goes on this.
Most likely, they just don't put him in because there's so little interest in the character, and there's always someone else they can stick in the game instead. I think there's a very real case to be made for adding in more Tournament of Power characters. If they put the whole Universe 10 team in a DLC pack before Bio-Broly, I'd be like "Yeah, that makes sense."
I just wonder where the bottom is. How big does the roster have to get before Bio-Broly becomes the next best choice for a new addition? 184 isn't the answer, but what about 200? 250? 300? When does it just get down to Bio-Broly and like... Shu wearing his fake Goku disguise?
Tumblr media
I mean, obviously Fake Goku should be added before Bio-Broly. Look at this guy. He's great.

Top 7 WORST Dragon Ball Transformations
Honorable mention: Beast Zarbon
Because they turned my muscle twink into a bear...
Tumblr media
Super Saiyan God
Tumblr media
This fucker. As much as I like Battle of Gods, this redhead continued a trend that started with a green tinged Broly and ended with orange fucking Piccolo and a cast of otter pop flavored Super Saiyans.
At least Super Saiyan 4 wasn't just a recolor of a recolor...
Tumblr media
Orange Piccolo
Speaking of lazy, visually unappealing, late stage capitalism embodying recolors, Piccolo is orange now. Yes I know he hasn't been relevant in a fight since his introduction in the 23rd World Martial Arts Tournament and briefly when Toriyama remembered against Second Form Frieza and Imperfect Cell, but it's ok, don't worry kids, HE'S ORANGE.
Tumblr media
Super Android 13
How is there still downhill from a trucker hat? Do you like this? Leave a comment on this webzone if you like this? Explain why you like his Vegeta hair and 90s earrings if you like this. Detail your obsession with blue skinned gingers if you like this.
Tumblr media
Third Form Frieza
Why is he a xenomorph? Why is he a xenomorph?! I guess I wasn't expecting him to be a xenomorph, which is typical for Toriyama, but WHY IS HE A XENOMORPH??? Like it's weird he's the alien from Alien, right? And it's weirder that he's almost 1:1 the pirate robot Goku fought in OG Dragon Ball
Tumblr media
Fifth Form Cooler
Oh fuck you. You fucking piece of shit. Fifth form? You're so non-canon it hurts. This couldn't just be his second form or idk his third form, since Frieza's second form was already Cooler. But it's his fifth! And Goku has to be there, because it's filler, so the threat needs to be bigger. It's not like the Frieza race are shapeshifters. Of course they're not dipshit, they all follow the same template. They're like the evolution chart detailing prehistoric ape to cromagnon man to blond guy. And this is his fifth form!
Imagine if this had been a Piccolo movie set while Goku was on Yardrat. We have Frieza's bro, who's not just miraculous stronger despite never doing anything about it, but he's still more powerful than the second form Frieza Piccolo fought. Idk. Fuck Coola
Tumblr media
Super Buu
This one is basically a Dragon Ball IQ test. At first glance he looks ok, maybe even cool. However, those with sufficient gray matter can easily ascertain that he's actually garbage, and that Fat Buu was the best design all along. He's just so generic looking, which is almost impressive for a guy so pink and sponge-y looking. Oh. And his transformation includes raiding people's wardrobe without realizing that shit don't even match
Tumblr media
Super Saiyan 3
See, a bad transformation isn't just about aesthetics. And don't get me wrong, the aesthetics are also awful. That caveman brow, the Raditz hair, those obscene spikes. But no, the worst part about Super Saiyan 3, the thing that I truly absolutely despise, is how effortlessly it cheapens Super Saiyan and Gohan's feat of going Beyond Super Saiyan
Because everyone had that thought the second Trunks arrived and went blond. That they could do it. Gohan, Vegeta, Ghost of Nappa, and any other Saiyan that might be out there. All of them could go Super Saiyan now, it's not prophecy after all. And that leads to the question of escalation. What next?
Well the Cell Saga answered this. Gohan was next. He went Beyond Super Saiyan. The boy did what his dad don't, he fucking mastered that shit. Then out comes Super Saiyan 3 like a baaaaad fart. But it only gets worse. It's a flawed, incomplete transformation that only works if you're dead. It's strong, but burns through energy faster than the body can collect it. And that's that. Dragon Ball ends, Goku saving the day without even using his new form. Dragon Ball GT introduces SS4 and DBS provides a crayon box of recolors for you to shove up your nose, all the while Super Saiyan 3 is left in the dust. It came, we all saw it, it sucked.

Alright, timelines. (link to my old post)
Today I'm going to walk you through the cluster fuck of Toriyama not paying attention to what he writes from the Trunks arc to the epilogue of the Perfect Cell arc.
Reminder that I divide the "Android Saga" in 4 arcs:
Trunks arc (arrival of Frieza to 3yg training),
Android arc (until the time machine is discovered)
Imperfect Cell arc (until Cell absorbs 18)
Perfect Cell arc (+ epilogue of Trunks killing imperfect Cell)
I will also pull Toei and Daizenshu content if needed just to show how bad it gets, BUT that's just to enhance my argument. Everything here is manga-deductible without extra context or content.
As I've shown in the link above, the manga implies 4 timelines:
Forgotten timeline (Cell kills Trunks and steals his time machine),
Lost timeline (the timeline that dead!Trunks traveled to, which did not have a Cell pop in the middle of its Android Saga, otherwise Trunks would've known about Cell),
Future Timeline (the one we know and see, Trunks traveled to a uni where Cell traveled to first, so there's changes and Cell pops up in the Android saga),
Main Timeline (the one we know and follow, to which Cell and Trunks traveled to),
Let's go into details about dates and math and everything first. (under the read more because LONG)
When Future Trunks discovers dead!Trunks' time machine, he states that it comes from age 788, which is 3 years from where he comes from (which means he comes from 785), and that the Machine landed here "4 years ago". 4 years ago was about one year before Trunks first came (aka one year before Meca Frieza stuff).
Tumblr media
During the first trip, Trunks states he comes from 20 years into the future.
Tumblr media
That means during his first trip, he went from 784/785 to 764.
We also know he's 17 at this point and "will be born in 2 and a half years"
Tumblr media
(Baby Trunks is supposed to be ~6 months old by May 12th, 767, so "I warn in 764, I'll be born in 2.5 years, so I was born in 766" works. Ignoring the wikis about Trunks' birthday being June and Future Trunks' birthday being in November, it doesn't matter here, we just need the years))
For Trunks to be 17 during his first trip, he needs to travel from 784 (before his 18th birthday). So by the time he comes back the second time, it needs to be in 785 (so he is 18!); since it takes 8 months to charge the machine (Trunks the Story manga chapter), that works out.
Tumblr media
So in terms of trips, we have:
Trunks (both versions) : (early-mid) 784 to 764
Trunks (both versions): (early-ish) 785 to May 12th 767
Cell: 788 to 763
Tumblr media
(handy recap sheet)
At the time, for Toei, there were only two Timelines (aka it was both multiverse theory AND dynamic time travel theory, because Trunks becoming aware of Cell who killed him means Trunks isn't killed by Cell... yeah it's all sorts of EHH ??):
Tumblr media
(Toei pamphlet for the Super Android 13 movie)
Tumblr media
(animedia 1992-1993, "Dragon Ball Z across time special, new year summary")
Anyway, you'd think this would be fine right? The image of Cell killing Trunks while he still had his sword (which he shouldn't since he broke it on 18's arm he never used it again in canon) is anime filler, we're all good.
Except... no. This fucking panel right here. Cell explains "(the machine/bots collecting dna) could've gotten Trunks cells but didn't because we had enough Saiyan cells".
Tumblr media
Cell supposedly comes from a timeline where GOKU killed Frieza and Cold. But this god forsaken panel contradicts that. (of course it's just that Tori forgot, but we are DB fans, we take things seriously and word of god of the manga is supreme and can't be wrong)
This means that THIS particular version of Cell doesn't come from the Forgotten Timeline.
The Cell we know and love/hate comes from a timeline in which a future Trunks killed Frieza and Cold, BUT everything still went to shit (Goku + gang dying, dead!Trunks traveling to the past, and coming back to destroy the Androids).
In this timeline, Bulma met Future Trunks (who killed Cold and Frieza) in 764, presumably the gang got all the warnings like in the main timeline, but everyone STILL died. So she invented the Time Machine to send her Trunks to the past (perhaps with different instructions so as to not repeat the mistakes of the Future Trunks she saw 20 years prior).
Here's the thing. There is a way for this timeline to exist. You "just" gotta work on the postulate that "each time there's a time travel to the past, a new branch is created". And "if the time machine travels back in time a second time, it lands in the timeline it first branched out unless it travels back further in time". Rephrased: The "784 to 764" trip created a new branch in 764. The "785 to 767" trip landed in that new 764 branch. However the "788 to 763" trip created a whole new branch in 763.
The Time Machine that was piloted by dead!Trunks actually "traveled further back in time", creating an earlier "branch"... which is why Trunks noticed changes, including Goku's late arrival (or Frieza's earlier arrival, we don't know).
Yes, because Future Goku did not use Instant Transmission to fight Frieza and Cold. We know he didn't because Future Bulma had the coordinates where Goku landed, which is how Future Trunks got said coordinates. If Goku had IT to fight Frieza and Cold, Bulma wouldn't have known where the pod was going to land 3 hours later.
So timelines and where does Cell come from? Well you need a timeline from the Branch that started in 764 (with a Future Trunks' arrival to kill Frieza and Cold) but in which everyone died to the Androids, and in which, when Trunks traveled back home, he was able to destroy the Androids...
Anyway here's my final recap of all the timelines in Z, in which "one time travel is one interference creating a new branch". And this is how we can see where Cell comes from :D

This opens a realm of possibilities!!
Did a version of Trunks stay in the past, during his first trip and got a wish to Shenron to have a way to destroy his androids, so he didn't come back in 767 and didn't grow strong at all? Did the future trunks that warned against the Androids but that timeline still went to shit approached the problem differently?? who knows! Time for fanfics and doujins I guess :D
Peace!

Elon Musk has done it: iPhones and Android smartphones can now use his satellites to make calls anywhere on Earth
After revolutionizing global internet access, Elon Musk’s Starlink is poised to take smartphone connectivity to the next level. The ambitious satellite service will soon enable users to make calls from virtually anywhere on the planet, all without the need for specialized hardware.
Starlink’s Direct-to-Cell service: what it means
Starlink, a division of SpaceX, has announced its plans to introduce Direct-to-Cell, a groundbreaking feature that uses its vast satellite network to allow voice calls on regular smartphones. What sets this apart is its simplicity—there’s no need for modifications to your device. As long as your phone is LTE-compatible, you’re ready to connect.
This innovation could fundamentally change how we think about mobile communication. Imagine being able to make calls from the remotest corners of the Earth—whether you’re deep in a rainforest, sailing in the middle of the ocean, or trekking across deserts—with no cell towers in sight. Starlink’s satellite system makes this scenario entirely possible.
Which smartphones are compatible?
According to a letter sent by SpaceX to the FCC, the service has already proven successful with devices from major brands like Apple, Samsung, and Google. Tests confirmed smooth communication using the PCS G Block spectrum, across urban and rural areas, indoors and outdoors, and even under tree cover or clear skies.
Crucially, SpaceX emphasizes that any LTE-enabled smartphone will work with this technology—no hardware upgrades required. Even slightly older models like the iPhone 13 or iPhone 14 can benefit from this satellite connectivity, proving that cutting-edge communication doesn’t have to leave older devices behind.
