In 1877 a small village blossomed that was home to freedpeople slaves from Victoria County, Texas. Ex-enslaved, Joseph Smith and George Washington, both born in Virginia, opened a freight and passenger business hauling goods from the Gulf Coast to Victoria and neighboring towns. With their earnings both men bought town lots and homes in Victoria.
As anti-Black violence increased in Reconstruction-era Texas, Smith and Washington prospered financially but their safety was not assured. Using their knowledge of the local area, Smith and Washington purchased land between the towns of Victoria and Goliad south of San Antonio. Washington acquired 510 acres along Perdido Creek on April 5, 1877. While no record exists for Smith’s purchase, he went to the Goliad courthouse the same year to record a transfer of his possessions, including 200 acres, to his wife.
Smith and Washington sold land to other African American families from Victoria giving birth to a new colony. As the population increased the settlers called their village Perdido. The town prospered as a cattle and pig slaughtering and shipping center and, at various times, was called Centerville, Ira, or Ira Station. The slaughtering plant led to the town’s final name. When resident William Young submitted an application requesting a post office, he proposed the name Cologne because he thought it was time for a more sweet-smelling fragrance in town as opposed to the hog stench. The Postal Service approved Young’s application for Cologne.
In 1889, The Gulf, Western Texas, and Pacific Railway built a branch line through town with a depot and station stop. For ten years the village had the only integrated railroad depot in Texas.
While the town of Cologne is no longer evident, the cemetery remains. Most of the stone markings have eroded and many stones are buried in the dirt, but the metal headstone of Joseph Smith still stands. No stone is evident for Washington, but his son, Nathan Washington has a large plot. From freedom to death the African-American founders of Cologne reside together. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence

Making the Most of Your HVAC Repairs in Virginia
Tumblr media
Nothing in your Virginia home affects your comfort more than your HVAC units. Yet unless your expensive air-conditioner goes on the fritz in the middle of a heat wave or your long-lasting heater conks out during a blizzard. Most property owners in Woodbridge, Centerville, Alexandria and other areas in Virginia pretty much ignore their HVAC units until they just stop working and they feel uncomfortable.
Getting heating and air conditioning repairs addressed is something that you should deal with as soon as the need arises. Some of the maintenance tasks are simple and can be done by you, but a lot of other complicated tasks like air conditioning installations in Woodbridge and furnace repairs in Centerville, VA require professional help. Here are some reasons why contact a professional company to service your HVAC equipment.
Saving the Life of Your Unit before It’s Too Late
Always remember that minor repair needs can quickly develop into major repair needs, if not dealt with immediately when the need arises. The longer that you delay getting your professional air conditioning and heating repairs in Woodbridge, VA or in your local area, the more likely the problem will get worse and become even more costly to deal with.
Avoiding the Need for Early Replacement
Appliances like air conditioning, furnace and heating units are expensive so they are just expected to last long. However, as time goes by these appliances develop minor repair needs and if not dealt with quickly the minor repair needs develop into the worse scenario when you may need to replace your expensive system. To avoid spending more dollars to purchase a new unit, make sure to contact a professional when you need repairs for your heating and cooling units.
Saving More Money
Though hiring a professional for your heating and air conditioning installations in Alexandria and repair services requires fees, you can still find the services to be a more affordable and cost-effective option as compared to replacing the appliances. Just imagine the strain and stress that goes into trying to get your heating or cooling system to run even though it needs repairs can end up costing you a great deal more when it comes to your monthly bills. Contacting a professional HVAC repair company in Virginia or anywhere in your local area will help in the functioning of your unit as effectively as it did before.
Many HVAC repair service providers claim to provide the best quality AC and heating installations in Alexandria, VA and other HVAC repair services in VA. Make sure to look for a company that is reputed to provide the best quality installations and repairs of your HVAC units. You should look for a company that offers skilled staff and technicians who are capable to provide high-quality repair services at affordable prices.
Indeed, the best way to avoid even needing minor repairs is to work with a professional company or service provider in VA or in your area. So making the smart choice about who your heating repair service provider should be can make all the difference.

FBI Arrests 2 Men Planning 'Violent' Robbery of Bitcoin Worth Millions of Dollars — They Face 20 Years in Prison
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has arrested two men who "participated in a violent scheme to break into family homes in the middle of the night" to steal tens of millions of dollars worth of bitcoins. They could face up to 20 years in prison.
Two men are charged in a scheme to steal bitcoins
The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) on Friday announced the unsealing of an indictment charging Dominic Pineda and Shon Morgan with "planning a home invasion robbery for tens of millions of dollars in bitcoins." The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) arrested the two men in Virginia on Thursday. U.S. Attorney Damian Williams gave details. The defendants participated in a violent scheme to break into a family's home in the middle of the night and force its residents to provide codes believed to be tens of millions of dollars in Bitcoin currency. According to court documents, from May 18 to May 24, 2020, the defendants participated in a scheme to "break into a home in Irvington, New York, and rob its residents of cash and cryptocurrency." At the time of the planned home invasion, Bitcoin was trading at approximately $10,000 per coin. BTCpeaked at an all-time high of $68,892 in November 2021. It has since dropped in value and is currently trading at $20,892 Pineda, 21, of Manassas, Virginia, and Morgan, 21, of Centerville, Virginia, were each charged with conspiracy to commit Hobbs Act robbery in violation of 18 U.S.C. § 1951, which carries a maximum sentence of 20 years. Top 5 Characteristics of Professional HVAC Providers in Virginia
Tumblr media
If you don't want your home to be too hot during summertime or too cold during winter, having fully functional HVAC systems are needed. But, just like any other system, HVAC units break down and just stop. If you are having an issue with your heating and cooling systems and you need an immediate solution, chances are that you have thought about doing the repair yourself.
However, the problem is that doing the HVAC repair by yourself can be dangerous and expensive if you don’t have the experience and the right equipment.  Even though you may think that hiring a professional company is going to be too expensive than just doing it yourself, there are still a lot of advantages to hiring one rather than doing it yourself. Here are some of the reasons why you need professional air conditioning installations in Woodbridge and furnace repairs in Centerville, VA or anywhere in your local area.
Knowledgeable about HVAC Systems
When you hire professional HVAC contractors for your air conditioning installations in Alexandria or heating repairs in Woodbridge, VA or other HVAC repair services in VA, expect that they are knowledgeable about HVAC services. They have the skills and knowledge that are needed for making your heating, furnace or air conditioner work efficiently in no time.
Offer a Wide Range of Services
By contacting professional HVAC service companies, you will gain access to a wide range of products and services available. From air conditioning repairs to heating installations in Alexandria, VA and maintenance services, you definitely get all your cooling and heating needs covered. In short, all you need for your heating and air conditioning systems to run smoothly can be found under the roof and you won’t need to go anywhere else.
Reputable and Certified
Professional heating and air conditioning technicians have the certification and the right training to provide reliable and professional HVAC repairs and HVAC installations. They are going to know what needs to be done and how to do it safely, whereas you may make a mistake that can injure you or cause damage home.
Offer More Savings
At first glance, doing the HVAC installation and repair by yourselves may seem like the way to go for those who want to save money. But the truth is you can save more money in the long run if you will go with a professional HVAC service company that provides professional heating and air conditioning services. This is because professional providers often do the job efficiently.
Safety
When hiring a professional, you can assure that you and your systems are in safe hands.  If you plan to do the work by yourself then you have to consider leaky gas, carbon monoxide and other issues that might potentially put you and your family at risk. Professionals are properly trained and highly equipped to look after such threats and deal with them when it happens.
Provide Fast and Prompt Services
Speed is one of the advantages of hiring professional services. Experts understand how frustrating and difficult it would be for the entire family if the heating and air conditioning system got broken during winter or summer so with their emergency HVAC repair in Virginia, you can be sure that they get the job done when they need to be done.

wip wednesday
Alice is only half asleep when someone knocks on her window. The repetitive tap tap tap tap tap lets her know who it is and that they’re not going to let up any time soon. She crawls to the end of her bed and moves the curtain aside.
“It’s early,” she whines but Gladys holds up a cup of coffee and she reluctantly rolls out of bed. She doesn’t bother to put on shoes or a bra, just walks out to the tiny porch of her house where Gladys is already making herself comfy on the top step.
“You look like hell.” Gladys hands her a mug that says VIRGINIA IS FOR LOVERS even though Alice is quite sure neither Gladys nor her mother has ever been anywhere south of Centerville. “Tough night?”
“Eat shit.” But she takes the coffee and a seat next to Gladys' sprawled out legs. She’s in an oversized Ramones t-shirt and a pair of Converses that have seen better days. Alice’s house - if the three rooms and shoddy plumbing could so generously be called that - is right across the back entrance to Sunnyside Trailer Park, giving them a splendid view of the chain link fence that separates them.
Some days Alice wishes she lived on that side of the fence. At least they had a maintenance guy to call when the pipes burst. At least there was some sense of comradery on that side.
She takes a long sip off her coffee and uses her free hand to reach into the flower pot two feet away. Under some old mail - her dad had yet to replace the mailbox he’d hit with the truck three months ago - she finds a pack of cigarettes and a Bic. Gladys helps herself as Alice flicks the lighter.
“If you’re expecting a sorry for last night,” Gladys leans in and lights her cigarette off Alice’s, “you’ve got another thing coming.”
Alice tosses the lighter back in the pot, racking her brain. “Am I supposed to be mad at you?”
Gladys purses her lips in a way that reminds Alice all too much of herself.
