Pekoë tableware by Lucas Frank for Revol

Today's trend in ceramics often is to emphasize the poetry of imperfection and hand made an appearance. For the Pekoë tableware collection, the French Designer Lucas Frank took the approach of technical research as inspiration. The result is this cup with a heat dissipator like shape, that allows you to hold a hot beverage without hurting yourself. On the inside, they are treated with an aged-silver or dark-metal enamel and the outside is left raw but polished, to give it a soft feel in your hands.

Tate Britain

I visited Tate Britain on the 5th of April 2019.I viewed an exhibition called Sixty Years ,It showcases work from the 1960s up to the present day .The collection of work focusses on how artists respond to issues and narratives that recreate Britain's History.

This piece of artwork was by Keith Piper called Go West Young Man (1987) made by 14 photographs of silver print.

Piper combines text images exploring the historical, social and cultural depictions of black male body .These images create an emotional effective and powerful atmosphere .The use of composition ,scale and colour are limited but creates an engaging artwork because the colours allow the viewer to keep focus on the delicate strong details. Each illustration is unique and connect to each piece through text and colours that is the same continuously .In my project I would like to show a similar connect with the series of illustrations I would like small elements to show that they are a package of the same cards .Keith use of simple, precise text in his imagery keep the artwork readable and educational .I would like my illustrations to be engaging and entertaining for young audiences but I would like a balance between the art to keep readable for young people to take seriously like Keith does successfully. The space between the blackness and white colour contrasts smoothly without making the work too distracting but creates a strong atmosphere with the different shades making it emotional and effective but visible to see. His compositions are frequently different but are still readable and playful ,with the different length and space he has presented things that keep the audience engaged. 

Donald Rodney called “20 Note Books and Sketchbooks “(1982-1998)

At the age of 17 Donald made the decisions to treat good sketchbooks as ongoing works of art .The books contain studies of artwork records of the past projects and personal writing. Donald explores his identity as a black British man .Within these sketchbooks they were work structured and organized for students to understand. When exploring powerful messages of Donald’s experiences the way he displays it in his book creates an emotional feel and often black silhouettes. Black creates the absence of colour which suggest mysterious atmosphere and white creates fresh beginnings and renewal, assisting in cleansing, clearing obstacles. These colours are limited within Donald’s work but can suggest many meanings and effective moods .In my project I would like to limit my colours and choose colours that can be described in many ways and relevant to my topic .Donald has done this which has made his work powerful and less distracting, and I need to make sure I produce this in my work so that young audiences are able to understand. Donald handwriting creates an organic and educational look and I would like to keep that style of being unprofessional in terms of handwriting so that my young audience can relate and it makes their work similar to theirs and builds connection.

Donald Locke called “Trophies of empire “(1972-1904) made from cermic,wood and glass .These objects were originally from Guyana in the Caribbean, Donald found it the junk stalls in Portobello Road market . The titles of his work implies these objects have a connection with violence and slavery. The connection of these objects being historical and having a long journey experience create each individual object having their own historical significance. This reminds me of the adinkra symbols each symbol having a hidden significant meaning and I am inspired the way Donald has presented it in shelves given them a voice and I am searching for an engaging and unique way to present my symbols. This has given me inspiration on designing a 3D sculpture that can be an object that can be displayed in gallery’s and can be touchable .sculptures can be fun and significant to hold because they have been designed delicately which can make it more important for the viewers .In my project I will explore more with materials to ensue younger audiences and find ways to show the importance of these symbols through the way I present them.

This includes things like cermic pots and houseplants that are used as props, paint, jewellery findings, pliers, rulers, scissors, cutting boards, background sheets ... and a whole lot more things that would just make this image look crowded! We design all our jewellery using vector software, which is than lasercut (- our laptop is a bit too big to fit into this square frame we think!).
