What Is Sculpture? Day 2
30/10/18-
The Other Mother Art Teacher
My art teacher was a bitch mean and talked down to me for my final year at high school- it made me lose a lot of my love and motivation to do art- I essentially only did work for school and never for myself. She came in around September, so we were already around 6 weeks into term, and told us immediately that as a class we would fail and we had to pull our fingers out and get work done. Our previous teacher had never said anything like this, he was supportive, and although teaching styles are different for everyone, he was so much calmer and more supportive than her.
I did my work and worked hard to spite her- I was adamant I was possible of passing, which she had told me I wasn't capable of. She spent a lot of time shouting and being very negative, like she told me my work didn’t belong to me after I went to speak to her about how one of my pieces had been cut up without consulting me. She wouldn't help me work on my portfolio to get into university (I ended up going to college and learning and developing my skills and self but I’ll explore that later).
I will create a form similar to the Other Mother from Coraline, a scary, screechy human-like form that stole their souls (note to self: read the book)
I think it would be fun to create the nice version- my old art teacher- however as he looked completely different to her and therefore I won't.
I will explore a slightly different approach than just creating the other mother as that teacher, I’ll make it more like her and more my own style. I will create drawings and work out how to create it.

‘The Miley Cyrus Scrapbook’ Interviews (2017)
youtube
Single screen version of the dual screened installation by Lizzie Ann Day (2017). The film is shot to mostly avoid the handmade scrapbook featuring cuttings, forcing the viewer to work out what sort of “childhood obsession” the artist could have collected, pushing us to stereotype and pigeonhole her. Shown across two screens, the film references Itamar Simonson’s “tipping point” theory. An idea that suggests collections do not start from one item, but two. The first alone, can be justified, whilst the second demands and third, the third a fourth, and so on. Screened in a corner, the artist is forcing the viewer to attempt to look at two screens simultaneously, feeding them the information from two different viewpoints, or two different items in one collection.
Featuring, in order of appearance: Michelle McLaren, Clara Strachan, Elliot Killick, Grace Mostyn, Erin Docherty, Fiona McLoone, Steven J. Wilson, Morgan Connelly, Heather McNab, Rachel Cairns, Georgina Hickey, Angela Van Geete.

⚔️ The Harpoon Highwayman ⚔️ For this project we were given random words and had to develop a hero of some sort. My words were "harpoon" and "highway". So here's a character design of a vigilante who fights the corrupt. #djcad #illustration #photoshop #superhero #art #comicbook #highwayman #illustrator #djcadunwrapped (at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design)

On Location
I decided to take the Beldam out around the college in places near the studios. There's this little alcove just before the cafeteria that I thought would be perfect for it to sit in a dark, contained area that would let it speak for itself, and be slightly hidden.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I spoke to some people who gave me mixed views. Some thought it was really creepy and being in the dark heightened that, whereas others thought it was ‘cute’ and didn’t react the way I’d hoped.
I then moved it to other locations, but when I was watching no one really reacted.
Tumblr media
I liked the idea of almost concealing it, as if almost being on top of it before seeing it would help add shock and fear.
Tumblr media
I then put it on the top stair, as if it is intimidating. One girl I spoke to said it looked as if it was ready to just scuttle down the stairs after her. I feel that if there was more time to this project I could have played around with movement (even repurposing RC spiders and the like to create something that moves, even simply) which would have added to the fear, having something scuttle across the floor.
Tumblr media
I then put it in a general open space that could be seen from further away, as it has a lot of windows around it so can be seen from a staircase nearby. I liked the idea of it being seen from different places and sparking interest, but I still want it to be somewhat creepy.
I found that it was quite easy to push around the studio since it is on the two plates, and when i do it jolts and wobbles slightly since it has such spindley legs that almost don’t support it. It makes it creepy in its own right, and I think I will film this to show the movement.
I was also thinking about how I can make it creepier, for example I have glow in the dark paint that I could use to make the eyes glow,  or I could cut the mouth out and either make it hollow or create teeth for it. I could also add sound, since the underside is hollow and not filled in I could attach a speaker or my phone to the belly and play sounds for it.

‘The Miley Cyrus Scrapbook’ (2017) | Installation
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Made in an attempt to replicate the Beatles fan scrapbooks of the 1960s, this book holds all the cuttings about Miley Cyrus collected by the artist between 2008 and 2014. The 4 portraits on the book’s cover represent 4 distinct stages of style in Cyrus’ life. On the original Beatles version, these 4 portraits showed each member of the band (John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, and George Harrison) in an old school Hollywood styling.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The cuttings themselves were collected by the artist in secret from the age of 11 to 17, after becoming fascinated by Cyrus on return from a family holiday in Ontario, Canada. As they were kept isolated, nobody except the artist had seen these cuttings until the start of this project. The artist wished to document a public reaction to the collection, not only to see what others thought of childhood obsessions but also as a sort of cathartic process. To open up to friends, and strangers. Those taking part in the filming process were all members of the same class, though some are known more to the artist than others.
Tumblr media
The film itself is shot to avoid the scrapbook, forcing the viewer to work out what sort of “childhood obsession” the artist could have collected, pushing us to stereotype and pigeonhole her. Shown across two screens, the film references Itamar Simonson’s “tipping point” theory. An idea that suggests collections do not start from one item, but two. The first alone, can be justified, whilst the second demands and third, the third a fourth, and so on. By being screened in a corner, the artist is forcing the viewer to attempt to look at two screens simultaneously, feeding them the information from two different viewpoints, or two different items in one collection.
Tumblr media
Beatlemania is often referred to as a religion. As the starting point, and main control, for this project, the artist has contrasted this world scale obsession with her own tween interest in Cyrus. Like the Beatles fans, she has collected cuttings and merchandise. Like the Beatles fans, she covered her bedroom walls, keeping even the smallest mention of her idol from a ratty newspaper. With this in mind, was Miley Cyrus the artist’s religion? To play with this idea, the handmade scrapbook sits on an ornate wooden stand, reflective of those used for religious literature.
