ok you know what i need more bodysharing/brain roommates. malevolent got me feeling some kind of way and I need MORE. tvtropes has like 15 different categories that are all sort-of-but-not-really under the umbrella of what I'm looking for, and sorting through all of that is a little too unwieldy, so I'm turning to you guys. 

key factors of the specific flavor of "multiple consciousnesses stuck in the same meat suit" that I'm looking for are:

any variation of, a human (or this universe's equivalent [so like, an elf where elves are commonplace would count]) has another, nonhuman consciousness attached to them and only them in such a way that the two can communicate, and subsequently

they Banter Constantly

^that^ is probably the most important qualifier here tbh

second most important qualifier is that they are not separated at the end (this obv. doesn't apply if the thing is still ongoing). it's okay if the passenger gets a new body (cf. subnautica) or is freed from their binding (cf. baldur's gate), as long as the partnership isn't broken.

Related: they don't actually have to SHARE a body (so enchanted objects, an AI implant, a Mysterious Disembodied Voice, an imaginary friend, etc., also count). they just have to be tethered to each other such that the passenger cannot move around or function on their own without a host. (I think this is part of why it's hard to narrow down on tvtropes: it's more about the dynamic than about the specific mechanism of "possession".)

Third most important qualifier is that only the current host can hear/communicate with the passenger, even if other people around them are aware of the passenger's existence.

two humans stuck in the same body is okay as long as the other criteria are met, but I would prefer it if the host is human(/equivalent) and the passenger is not (or vice versa if the passenger/possessor is the one with control of the body, as with things like the yeerks, most demonic possession, etc).

it doesn't have to be romantic. they don't even have to like each other. conversely, it absolutely can be romantic too.

They DO have to be the POV character/s for a significant majority (like, at least 60-75%) of the work, because the internal back-and-forth is the entire point.

Bonus points if: they do actually share a body; they are either never physically separated either, or are rejoined at the end (voluntarily or otherwise); passenger has lots of setting-relevant knowledge/an alien or fantastical perspective, while host shows passenger what it's like to be Alive™; despite constantly butting heads, host and passenger work patently better as a team; super extra bonus points for all of the above

other things that have moments or flavors of this, but aren't focused on it/don't quite hit all of them:

the Bartimaeus trilogy had it at the end a little, but, well. it didn't last very long. (i STILL haven't recovered from that ending and i was, what? 15 or something? g o d)

the emperor in bg3 kiiiinda counts since they're magically bound to the player/party and can't exist outside their prison, but they do have their own body and are not nearly as chatty as I'm  looking for. also, while only the holders of the prism can hear them, All of the holders of the prism can hear them and I'd really prefer one-on-one.

I think Death Note would also count? I read it in like 6th grade and never finished it so my memory is patchy At Best, but since nobody else can interact with Ryuk, he's bound to whoever holds the notebook, and he's the supplier of the holder's powers, it's close enough that I would accept something similar.

Slay the Princess has the bickering in spades and fulfills the "do not separate" criterion depending on your ending, although the jury's out on whether the voices are Actually their own entities or just symptoms of you losing it. Also, nobody in it is human. The bickering is definitely good enough to make up for it though. (The fact that it's Jonny Sims clearly having a grand old time might have something to do with it...)

with the caveat that I have not watched any of it, i think jadzia (and?) dax from ds9 miiight count, but they're part of an ensemble cast and thus fail the "pov characters for a majority of the work" and "we get to hear their constant internal banter" criteria.

things I tried that fit at least some criteria, but didn't like for various reasons:

the good demon by jimmy cajoleas. promising concept, but 1) the protagonist smokes, which is an instant and unnegotiable dealbreaker (seriously, who makes their protagonist do that in The Year Of Our Lord Anything Later Than 1950?? and to a child? DEATH. ONE MILLION YEARS DUNGEON.), and 2) I looked it up and they separate at the end anyways, so there's even LESS of a point. 

the venom comics. honestly I just... really dislike superhero comics, there's always way too many of them to keep track of + I'm very shallow and they're usually unbearably ugly to me (and also having started with the movies I just found comics!eddie really unpleasant tbh) 

parasyte manga. perfect concept, great dynamic, but its particular brand of body horror was... not great for me and I had to put it down. (horror in and of itself isn't a dealbreaker, though, so if you've got something similar that doesn't involve lots of hands bent at nauseating angles, I'll gladly take it.)

Cyberpunk 77 has the two-humans flavor of this and hits almost all of the other criteria, but i viscerally hated literally everything about j*hnny s*lverhand with every fiber of my being and the rest of the game was so mediocre already that i just gave up

....I know it's a highly specific/potentially niche dynamic, but if anyone has any recs, PUHLEEASE hmu!!! I'm looking for original work rather than fanfiction, but apart from that, format doesn't matter at all (although if it's some like super difficult indie game or something, I probably won't get very far lol). the MAIN points are 1) bickering and 2) host-and-passenger, so if you have something that hits those but not the others, feel free to share it anyway!

There is no version of events in which Maedhros and Maglor find Elrond and Elros in a cave.

There is one in which they left them there.

... sorry about the clickbait intro, but this is important!

Perhaps you've heard of a 'version/draft' of the finding of Elrond and Elros after the sack of Sirion in a cave ? Perhaps you've read that Maglor and Maedhros found them? Maybe even heard that the murder brothers named them?

So here's where that version comes from (I assume, anyway). It's in Letter 211 to Rhona Beare (Oct 14, 1958), who asked Tolkien to "explain the meaning of El- in Elrond, Elladan, Elrohir" (i.e., whether it's 'star' or 'elf').

(I'm cutting parts of the passage that aren't relevant but I'll put the whole thing under the cut for those who, like me, don't trust "[...]". Emphases are mine.)

Elrond and Elros, children of Eärendil (sea-lover) and Elwing (Elf-foam), were so called, because they were carried off by the sons of Fëanor, in the last act of the feud between the high-elven houses of the Noldorin princes concerning the Silmarils. [...] The infants were not slain, but left like 'babes in the wood', in a cave with a fall of water over the entrance. There they were found: Elrond within the cave, and Elros dabbling in the water.

Now I'm gonna break this down and turn the passive verbs into active ones for clarity.

If we assume this story is being told in sequence (which, I think unless there's good reason not to, we should, because that's the default storytelling convention), the events in order are:

The sons of Feanor (agent) carry off Elrond and Elros (object acted upon)

[Unspecified agent] does not slay E & E

[Unspecified agent] leaves E & E in a cave

[Unspecified agent] finds E & E in the cave

#2 and #3 are (logically and probably grammatically) the same unspecified agent. #4 is logically someone else (it doesn't make sense for the same agent to leave E & E in a cave and also find them there).

The only named agents in any of this are the sons of Fëanor - same guys who attacked and sacked Sirion. Given there are two implied agents here, which one are the SoFs more likely to be? Listen, I'm not out to torch anyone's fave and stir up controversy (also I love Maglor), but very probably the sons of Feanor are the agents who 'don't slay' and 'leave' the infants in the cave.

So who found them there? I don't know, up to the imagination!

Also, nothing in the story about them being named by anyone - that's only implied by the fact that this is an origin story for their name meanings.

Erlking

In European folklore and myth, the Erlking is a sinister elf who lingers in the woods. He stalks children who stay in the woods for too long, and kills them by a single touch.

The name "Erlking" is a name used in German Romanticism for the figure of a spirit or "king of the fairies". It is usually assumed that the name is a derivation from the ellekonge (older elverkonge, i.e. "Elf-king") in Danish folklore. The name is first used by Johann Gottfried Herder in his ballad "Erlkönigs Tochter" (1778), an adaptation of the Danish Hr. Oluf han rider (1739), and was taken up by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe in his poem "Erlkönig" (1782), which was set to music by Schubert, among others. Goethe added a new meaning, as "Erl" does not mean "elf", but "black alder" - the poem about the Erlenkönig is set in the area of an alder quarry in the Saale valley in Thuringia. In English translations of Goethe's poem, the name is sometimes rendered as Erl-king.

According to Jacob Grimm, the term originates with a Scandinavian (Danish) word, ellekonge "king of the elves", or for a female spirit elverkongens datter "the elven king's daughter", who is responsible for ensnaring human beings to satisfy her desire, jealousy or lust for revenge. The New Oxford American Dictionary follows this explanation, describing the Erlking as "a bearded giant or goblin who lures little children to the land of death", mistranslated by Herder as Erlkönig in the late 18th century from ellerkonge. The correct German word would have been Elbkönig or Elbenkönig, afterwards used under the modified form of Elfenkönig by Christoph Martin Wieland in his 1780 poem Oberon.

Alternative suggestions have also been made; in 1836, Halling suggested a connection with a Turkic and Mongolian god of death or psychopomp, known as Erlik Chan.

Johann Gottfried von Herder introduced this character into German literature in "Erlkönigs Tochter", a ballad published in his 1778 volume Stimmen der Völker in Liedern. It was based on the Danish folk ballad "Hr. Oluf han rider" "Sir Oluf he rides" published in the 1739 Danske Kæmpeviser. Herder undertook a free translation where he translated the Danish elvermø ("elf maid") as Erlkönigs Tochter; according to Danish legend old burial mounds are the residence of the elverkonge, dialectically elle(r)konge, the latter has later been misunderstood in Denmark by some antiquarians as "alder king", cf Danish elletræ "alder tree". It has generally been assumed that the mistranslation was the result of error, but it has also been suggested (Herder does actually also refer to elves in his translation) that he was imaginatively trying to identify the malevolent sprite of the original tale with a woodland old man (hence the alder king).

The story portrays Sir Oluf riding to his marriage but being entranced by the music of the elves. An elf maiden, in Herder's translation the Elverkonge's daughter, appears and invites him to dance with her. He refuses and spurns her offers of gifts and gold. Angered, she strikes him and sends him on his way, deathly pale. The following morning, on the day of his wedding, his bride finds him lying dead under his scarlet cloak.

Although inspired by Herder's ballad, Goethe departed significantly from both Herder's rendering of the Erlking and the Scandinavian original. The antagonist in Goethe's "Der Erlkönig" is the Erlking himself rather than his daughter. The Erlkönig appears to a young boy in a feverish delirium - his father, however, identifies the apparition as a simple streak of fog. Goethe's Erlking differs in other ways as well: his version preys on children, rather than adults of the opposite sex, and the Erlking's motives are never made clear. Goethe's Erlking is much more akin to the Germanic portrayal of elves and valkyries – a force of death rather than simply a magical spirit.

In Angela Carter's short story "The Erl-King", contained within the 1979 collection The Bloody Chamber, the female protagonist encounters a male forest spirit. Though she becomes aware of his malicious intentions, she is torn between her desire for him and her desire for freedom. In the end, she forms a plan to kill him in order to escape his power.

Charles Kinbote, the narrator of Vladimir Nabokov's 1962 novel, Pale Fire, alludes to "alderkings". One allusion is in his commentary to line 275 of fellow character John Shade's eponymous poem. In the case of this commentary, the word invokes homosexual ancestors of the last king of Zembla, Kinbote's ostensible homeland. The novel contains at least one other reference by Kinbote to alderkings.

In Jim Butcher's The Dresden Files, there is a character called the Erlking, modeled after the leader of the Wild Hunt, Herne the Hunter.

In the author John Connolly's short story collection Nocturnes (2004), there is a character known as the Erlking who attempts to abduct the protagonist.

The New Yorker's "20 Under 40" issue of July 5, 2010 included the short story "The Erlking" by Sarah Shun-lien Bynum.

A version of the Erl-King is mentioned in Zoe Gilbert's Mischief Acts, implied to be a figure related to Herne the Hunter.

In Andrzej Sapkowski's The Witcher saga, the highest leader of the Folk of the Alder elves, Auberon Muircetach, is also known as the Alder King. In the story, he maintains thematic ties to kidnapping: the Wild Hunt, known for abducting humans, is subordinate to him, and he orchestrates the imprisonment of Cirilla.

Me piecing together the Welsh Celtic calendar that’s closest to the language & the actual historical rituals: OK so what is the Welsh equivalent of Litha, the Summer solstice? 

Welsh linguists: In the autumn, you have the cyhydnos "equinox", when the night and day are of equal length. The etymology mirrors the Latin origin of the English word (equi- + nox) – cyhyd "as long, of equal length" + nos "night". In September then you have cyhydnos yr hydref "the autumnal equinox" (cyhydnos + yr hydref "the autumn").  

The poetic term is Alban Elfed (remember alban can refer to a "solstice" or "equinox"). Elfed here means "autumn" and is another 18th-century coinage, this time by William Owen Pughe, composed of el "spirit + med "ripe". Pughe created el from Breton ael "angel" perhaps under the influence of Welsh êl "go" and Iolo Morganwg took med from aeddfed "ripe, mature", which comes from medi "reap, harvest" (cf. mis Medi "September"). Basically, these guys loved chopping words up and creating new ones. Another term for Alban Elfed is Alban Hyfed, with hyfed "ready for reaping" (hy- + medi) which you can see is also related in meaning.

(cf l'imagination chez Bottero) Cette magie particulière permet aux utilisateur.rices (que l'on appelle les Dessinateur.rices) de rendre réelles les choses imaginées. C'est comme si l'on dessinait dans notre esprit nos pensées, et que celles-ci se matérialisaient dans le vrai monde de façon temporaire.

Cette magie est assez rare au sein de la race, nombre de Syràn en sont totalement dépourvu.es. Néanmoins, iels compensent sans difficulté par leurs capacités physiques au combat au corps à corps assez exceptionnelles.

La magie est contrôlée par un groupe de personnages aux grands pouvoirs que l'on nomme les Sentinelles. L'imagination est donc réglementée : il est par exemple formellement interdit de faire revivre les morts, ou bien d'utiliser ses pouvoirs à des fins meurtrières (ce qui n'empêche pas certain.es de contrevenir à ces règles).

le Vif ( Laëris )

(cf Le Vif chez Robin Hobb)  Le Vif est une magie intimement liée à l'environnement de son utilisateur.rice (que l'on appelle les Ligné.es), et notamment au monde animal. Il permet les dons de liens aux autres, que ce soit par la télépathie ou par la communication animale.

Cette magie est extrêmement courante chez les Laëris, toustes en sont doté.es, mais à des échelles extrêmement différentes. A l'âge de 12 ans, un test est effectué sur chacun.e pour déterminer le niveau de Vif.

Il existe un pouvoir particulier au Vif : certain.es de ses Ligné.es parviennent à tisser un lien si fort avec un animal qu'iels se retrouvent lié.es à lui, pour toujours. Ce lien leur permet de communiquer plus facilement, parfois même d'utiliser les sens de l'autre lorsque c'est nécessaire. Cette faculté est si mal vue par toutes les races et dans tous les coins du globe qu'elle peut mener à un procès mortel si découvert.

La magie du Feu   ( Fiel )

(cf sorcellerie) Cette magie occulte tire son pouvoir du feu et de l'Enfer. Elle peut être utilisée par les sorcier.es à des fins bénéfiques, mais comme en alchimie, son pouvoir nécessite des sacrifices et un principe d'équivalence. Il en va de même pour les sortilèges ou les formules.

Magie occulte ou divine, elle peut sembler effrayante bien que son utilisation dépende exclusivement de ce que qu'en font les sorcier.es (nom donné aux utilisateur.rices de la magie du Feu).  L'apprentissage de ce pouvoir (qui n'est que très partiellement inné) demande des années de sacrifices et de douleurs, et d'innombrables erreurs qui peuvent coûter extrêmement cher. Nombreux.ses sont les Fiel à n'avoir jamais su utiliser leur pouvoir correctement, et à avoir abandonné toute forme de magie dans leur vie.

L'elfique   ( Magriel )

(cf les elfes fantasy)  La magie elfique est utilisée et possédée par tous les elfes, quelque soit leur classification. Celle-ci est différente des autres car, si toute aussi puissante, elle nécessite l'utilisation de mots, d'herbes ou d'objets. Elle est innée, mais a besoin d'un support.

Elle repose sur la soif de connaissance, et est surtout tournée autour de la communication et de la guérison. L'immortalité elfique telle que connue dans les livres fait office de mythe, car elle a été perdue il y a fort longtemps, faute de dilution génétique.

Toustes ont la capacité et le savoir des plantes médicinales, qu'iels apprennent depuis tou.tes petit.es. Pas besoin donc de les acheter dans la boutique d'Atalan.

My blind-box dolls finally got here! I ordered them in August, so it's good to finally have them lol. I'm gonna do a read-more because I'll probably be chatty.

The one on the left is not actually a blind-box, but shh. It's a CF Doll 1/6 Durian elf, and it's pretty dang cute. The one on the right is a Dividing Line (FenJieXian) blind box, one of my least favorites from the line-up, ha.

I also ordered a sort of lucky bag that came with some accessories and it was not worth it lmao. It just had a kinda ugly wig, a cheap comb, and some cute anime eyes (it was packaged in another box, so I'm not completely sure what came with what, but I think this was the lucky bag). I already really don't do blond, and this length is impossible for me to work with with my own preferences, so it's just going to go in a box probably. It would fit okay on the Dividing Line doll if I styled it.

The construction of the CF Doll is interesting. It's a mixed-materials dolls with PVC and ABS (according to the site), and it reminds me a lot of the Hujoo dolls. Including the headcap. I audibly groaned when I tried to take the head off and saw the horrible slot construction:

I only have one Hujoo left now, and I'm so sad the company seems to have been all but deleted from the world (before I could get Amela, my white whale), but it's an interesting comparison, I think. Also the CF doll's hand keeps falling off and I'm probably going to glue it down.

The other blind box dolls I got were two of the Penny's Box dolls: a Nature's Secret and a Dou Street (or Adou Street. Sometimes the translations on things are different soz). They're just as cute as they looked online, and I got ones I wanted, so I'm happy!

Of course I don't have room to keep them out and don't want to lose the pieces, so I didn't open them up and dress them, but I love them! The Dou Street one especially is so precious I really have to get some photos at least. I was really hoping for one of the dogs, and it's just as squidgy and precious as I hoped! The other options were skateboards, headphones, and a boom box, but a dog is obviously the best option. Tbh, if I could find a place that shipped these nearby-ish, I would definitely get more. They're so adorable.

Also, and this is kinda sad, but one thing I really liked about the shipping was that the company put plastic caps on the corners of the boxes so they didn't get too banged up in shipping.

Usually the stuff I get in the mail is either in a large, expensive shipper or just comes banged up, and I'm definitely keeping these in case I need to ship a nice box.

Overall, I'm not sure I love the site I shipped from, but a lot of that may have just been me misunderstanding some things on the website, so I'm not angry at them. But this was expensive, so I am kind of at the end of my spending limit, haha. Since I got some dnd minis the other day, I'm gonna try to focus more on painting for a while, along with dyeing the dividing line doll if I can find somewhere that sells dye near here.

MDJFP_Log_2: Elf Glacia

We have heard tales of the realm of [ONSHU], she has told us about her dear friend and adventuring companion. Since then the team and us and our unit are working together to find Glacia. This proves to be a very hard task as so many of her D.I/V’s look the same and have the same CF color, we think that we have found the one that [ONSHU] means though. We are sending out one of our historians (of this unit) to see if this is the Glacia that [ONSHU] has traveled with.

Happy Birthday [ONSHU], you are the best ECSu-1 in the history of the MDJFP.

Not sure if want.

On one hand, ElfQuest was very formative when I was in high school. But so were Hammer Horror films (Christopher Lee will always be my Count Dracula) and the original Planet of the Apes. After a while, distance allowed me to see a lot of it as twee and a bit fixated on how wonderful having kids is. Almost every bad thing in the series past a certain point being linked to Winnowill was tiresome*. Recent revelations about Jink were both completely predictable and induced eye-rolling (not to mention, revelation with regards to Cutter's and Timmain's souls and Recognition with Skywise and boy this is the most roundabout way to get to Cutter x Skywise mpreg baby I guess).

But also, what was groundbreaking about ElfQuest was that it came out in the 1970s with every elf being omnisexual, the two main male characters were probably in some romantic relationship left undefined for decades (cf. remark about Cutter x Skywise mpreg baby), female characters were strong and demanded respect, and it swung hard into exploring xenophobia and war. I think, if the dialogue about gender, sexuality, racism, et al then was as nuanced as it is now, it might have done better.

Will wait and see. In the meantime, I guess I'll have to catch up with the comics.

*I have the same issues with DD's Lone Power being the big bad for nearly everything in the YW universe. And I get it, it's a young adult/mid grade(?) series and such, but after multiple books it just gets a bit boring.

Timely reminder that Goblin Slayer, Ahab Smith, still rests in a mass grave outside Redding CFS (California Free State), along with Cow Girl, Guild Girl, Noble Fencer and a few hundred of their fellow militant racists. Elf Archer was shot to paste by the Imperial Japanese Marines in San Francisco, while Priestess is doing twenty to life in Redding because she was just a kid whom Goblin Slayer groomed into his campaign of racist mass murder.

Goblin Slayer, Ahab Girty, was shot like a mad dog, with a Judge Bean Sonuvabitch speech, by Harry 'Warrior' Fawkes. Or else Goblin Slayer, Ahab Grey, was Boojummed into oblivion twice over by the Prince of Goblins, Puck. Goblin Slayer's only existence worth acknowledging will only occur when I choose to resurrect and justly kill him for a fourth or fifth time.

The staff, voice actors and viewers who have disgraced themselves by facilitating a second season of race-baiting and victim shaming have nothing to say on this subject worth the respect of sensible people. Nothing written by Kumo on any subject has or will ever be worth anything but scorn. That part of society that owns the necessary accomplishment of recognising and spurning racism, misogyny, male chauvinism, and idiotically senseless writing that propagates all these poisons, has never regarded and never will regard Goblin Slayer with more than contempt and disgust.
