nct dream as partners to an age regressor
nct dream x f! reader
author's note: hihi! first time blogging, kinda nervous... i've had this idea in my little marble head for quite some time and now here i am posting it !
dni: if you sexualize age regression and/or have an 18+ blog.
genres & content warnings: fluff fluff fluff. no warnings !
이민형 | mark lee
ur gonna be the death of him. poor boy is stressed 25/8
he's doing his best but he still doesn't quite understand at times
a quality time lover ! sometimes he gets so immersed in his own thing he doesn't notice you switch tasks until it's too late,,,,
"oh no! oh dude... i'm so sorry man, c'mere. no, don't apologize. it's my fault. it's ok. you can cry all you want. let's just get a bandaid on that gnarly cut, okay?"
when he's sorry, he means it ! after the pb&j knife switcheroo incident, he made sure to set alarms to make your meals just in case you've regressed that day and can't (safely) make your own food
a very good listener ! he loves listening to u talk for hours and hours and hours and hours and
listens intently to the explanation of your shows, the names of your plushies, and the storylines currently on going as you play pretend
loves playing pretend. at first, he was a bit shy, breaking character and laughing into his hands when embarrassment got the best of him, but now bro is confident! u could place him in a broadway show and no one would think he's out of place
could be said he was actually the one who made the first move to play pretend.
"...whatcha doing?"
"playing"
"...what are you playing?"
after being burned under your x-ray vision gaze for no less than 5 seconds, you hand him a plushie and 'insist' on him playing with you
not one for titles or nicknames. mark is mark, you are you!
punishments are the last of his worries. hopefully, you don't make it rise the ranks
황런쥔 | huang renjun
manners freak
"ah!" he always has to hold whatever you asked for out of your reach. "what do we say? it starts with a t and ends with a 'you'."
does all sorts of crafts with you
one time, he drew your favorite character and you loved it so much you made him put it on your wall then and there. he was undermining it and complaining that he didn't want to get up and do all the work that involves framing it but the smile and blush on his face told a different story
lets you put stickers on him! only the pretty ones that he's approved beforehand. and NOT on his hair. he's chinese, not korean. he doesn't need the military service buzzcut
like mark, not big on titles. they make him uncomfortable tbh. nicknames for you, however, he does quite like (tiny, munchkin, etc.).
happy to let you be independent while regressed under STRICT supervision
goes so far as to make little songs and jingles to you can sing along to as you perform certain tasks so you both know you're doing things safely and correctly even when out of his eyesight
ur complete coloring pages go right next to his pieces of art on the fridge. u are both artists !
lullabies are a must. the man is a singer for a living ! good night! z Z z ....
punishments usually consist of renjun nagging on for over an hour. you don't really tend to listen. it's mostly for him to let out his frustration before the big stepper comes for you.
"and NO ice cream this weekend!" "NO!"
이제노 | lee jeno
first one to actually not mind titles ! he can live without them but they scratch an itch in his brain like nothing else can
two words: cute aggression. leans in to kiss your cheek only to bite it. he bites your nose. he bites your EARS ?! someone lock this man up !
hugs you in a way that presses the cheeks of the two of you until you look like twins conjoined at the head
the cuddliest man ever like i've never seen a more teddy bear-coded individual?!?!?!
"gotta pee."
"hold it."
"i can't!"
grumbling jeno noises
started going back to the gym after seeing how much he you like being carried
he doesn't really talk a lot when in cg mode, but you've known him long enough that you can read his body language just fine
might actually be in cg space more than you are regressed !
just anything that you do, big or little. it's so precious to him. he feels the urge to just protect you from everything!!!
no !!! u can't go outside !!! what if bugs bite u?!!! oh u brought bug spray? ok... send him a message of when u get on the bus! and when u get off the bus! and to ur friend's house! actually, just let him drive u ok? give him five minutes to change !
the worst at dishing out punishments out of all of dream. a pout, a teary eye, a sniffle, he's unraveling at the seams.
he sits on a chair by the bed, arms crossed with a stern look. you could shatter it with a bat of your lashes, but you know you need this.
"i'll be sitting here until you fall asleep. we could've played chutes and ladders tonight like you wanted if you hadn't thrown away your veggies, angel."
이동혁 | lee donghyuck
he is the baby. wdym you are ?
poor boy is used to being the youngest and acting cute, what is he supposed to do now that the tables are turned?
at the beginning, it's lots of awkward head pats and hugs of comfort.
sits you on his lap while he's gaming, playing with you and your toys in between matches
kind of insecure to be ur cg :( give the boy praise and appreciation!
"you," he sighs, looking away from you. "you should really be in bed by now. it's past your bedtime."
"but you're not asleep."
another sigh.
"i know..."
when his confidence and comfortability is up tho? big big BIG on the baby talk and praise to the point you have to remind him you guys are in public!!! it started out as a joke (yk how he is, being annoying on purpose with his main weapon being aegyo). he doesn't think it's a joke anymore guys,,,,,,,,,,,,,
titles are goofy to haechan. he calls you the same he always does.
"what about me? did i do a good job today?" he asks, striking a ridiculous pose.
"yeah ! you're the best, chan ! :D"
"... :( thank u baby :,("
punishments don't exist actually! he's right there next to you. silly string all over the room? it was his idea to play spiders. veggies thrown away? impossible. he never bought them to begin with. didn't do your assignment? was it that important to begin with? hyuck doesn't think so
might be a regressor too ! on the older side, perhaps (pre-teen - teenage)
나재민 | na jaemin
terrible for big space. just the absolute worst
baby talk and aegyo is not an action for him, it's a lifestyle. makes you do one or the other (or both if he's feeling particularly sadistic i mean playful) if you want something or as a punishment on the lighter side
probably made you slip multiple times before you even told him you regress
all the cheesy, cringy, cliche stuff? he does that. shamelessly too
loves titles and uses them on himself even if you don't. doesn't make you call him anything, but he loves how it 'rolls off the tongue so well!'
he's an addict to nicknames for you. finds them randomly
"oh man, look at that rabbit! it's so cute!"
"just like y/n"
"what"
just randomly takes out his phone in the middle of walking to text you
nana: hi bunny
you: ?
you: hi?
acts of service are his natural calling. you might as well be quadriplegic.
makes your favorite drink for you! ur too little to do it urself !!! let him do it for u (pls pls pls pls pls he's on his knees)
also makes lunches for you that are all pretty and shaped like some sort of animal when ur feeling small ! he stopped doing cats though since one time you felt like you were eating luna and cried.
you two literally fight to death about who loves who the most. jaemin has to be tied to a chair in the basement of an abandoned building to let you do literally anything for him
punishments are extremely rare. virtually non-existent. he prefers to talk things through and give rewards rather than take away
health is important! it's so so important to him he set up a meal plan where you eat the rainbow three times a day.
makes you exercise with him.........
"i'll be home in about half an hour, jellybean. do you think you could finish a bottle of water by then? i know you can. i'll see you soon, okay?"
종천러 | zhong chenle
you know those people that talk to babies like they're grown people that pay taxes and drink alcohol? that's chenle
he knows you've regressed and you're not in the mindset of an adult anymore, but he isn't a big baby talk person like jaemin is
the nicknames he uses for you are very classic so he can use them both in public and in private (doll, dollface, princess, etc.)
surprisingly into his role as cg? like, he has a chart set up for you and everything. if he's abroad/not around, he'll call you so you can place the gold stars yourself in his behalf
another manners enthusiast
uses titles for himself and expects you to use them too
"'can i have dessert please, what?', princess? what word is missing from that sentence?"
doesn't say much but always keeps an eye or hand on you in public.
bro is nonchalant (for the most part. just don't read his locked notes)
"a gift? i didn't buy you anything" LIAR. "what pink box? have you opened it? bring it over here. let me see"
he's very patient, just stern since he has strict boundaries and rules. constantly encouraging you to have firm boundaries as well.
"is this ok?" "do you not like this?" "how do you feel about that?"
go-to punishment is writing lines. always gives you a yogurt or some other snack when you finish. mostly does it for himself, he doesn't like staying on the subject of punishment/bad behavior. there's better things to do in his opinion
his favorite activity to do with you when small is your text message conversations. no words, no talking, just a photo message from you (!!!! look what i'm doing !!!!) and a photo from him in response (!!!! good job i'm so proud of you !!!! here's what i'm doing !!!!)
박지성 | park jisung
a lot like mark, not a fans of titles or nicknames
more of a listener. has lots of questions but doesn't want to interrupt the groove with which you're explaining the lore of equestria so he just nods his head in hopes that he'll understand with time and context
the one who would adjust the fastest to learning about your age regression out of all the dreamies. give him five minutes and he'll be like "...ok. wanna watch tv now?"
jisung is so !!! silly !!!
a goofy boy. he loves making exaggerated reactions and expressions to make you laugh
"gah-!" you've hit him with an invisible arrow! jisung holds his chest, stumbling back to slowly fall down onto the floor. very very slowly. "you've shot me... i can feel my life force leaving me... why... would you do this...? bleh."
kind of has a sixth sense for you. if something triggers you and makes you slip in public, he's like a cat that heard something no one else can.
pulsing your hand in his to get your attention only for you to avoid eye contact is a dead giveaway. he might not always be able to leave the event, but he makes sure to give you a break of just you two. breathing exercises, grounding techniques, he also lets you play with the plush toy keychain he bought for occasions just like these.
the first time you shutdown verbally when small, jisung panics! he's running around looking up on the internet how to 'talk without talking'. now he's a baby sign language expert. good job, you! /gen
can u tell this came from a jaemin delusion? he's just so cg coded my LORD ㅠㅠ

hi! thank u for doing cg!riize fics/imagines justice 🥺 i love everything you've put out so far 🫶🏻🫶🏻 can i request headcanons as to how cg!anton would put his little to sleep when he/she is too hyper nearing bedtime? tysm!! looking forward to it!!
tysm for requesting this!
이찬영 / anton lee ★
pairings: cg! anton lee x f!little reader. genre: sfw age regression, fluff. warnings: nonsexual usage of 'daddy' no major warnings apply. dni: if you sexualize little space.
you for the most part hate having a bedtime
and anton knows this!
…but you can’t stay up until 4 am seven days a week, it’s just not healthy
so it’s probably one of the few things cg!anton is strict about
doesn’t mean you’re gonna listen to him though!
you know it’s closer to your bedtime when anton starts helping you pick your toys up
he smiles at you, knowing you’re about to throw a fit
“let’s go to sleep, baby.”
“don’t want to daddy!” you pout. anton mouthed your words as you spoke, knowing you’d run the same line you’ve already given him 100 times before
when you get sassy, he’s gonna get sassier
“you can’t make me go to bed!”
“fine! but when you're walking around like a zombie tomorrow, don't say i didn't try to stop you..”
“you're such a meanie.”
his eyes wander around the room, making a show of ignoring the way you’re pouting at him
at some point he tries bribing you with your paci, and you almost fall for it!
but then you decide to not let anton win yet. so you start running around the living room, alternating between singing and making airplane noises (mainly to annoy anton)
it's way past your bedtime by now, and anton's getting a tad bit frustrated as you show no signs of wanting to slow down
"can you please stop running, baby?" he asks you, tone still patient as ever.
"NOPE! NEVER!"
and then you start throwing pillows at him
anton is sooooo done at this point
realizes he has to stop you once you start yelling "hey anton!"
& you know it's serious when his voice gets "louder" (heavy on the quotation marks, he would literally never raise his voice at you)
"y/n, it's past your bedtime. i need you to stop running around." the seriousness in his voice makes you stop in your tracks
you pout and mope all the way to the bathroom, even ignoring anton when he tries to hold your hand
which makes him feel bad for "scolding" you
he helps you go through your night routine, making sure to give you lots of kisses and call you pretty names!
carries you all the way to your shared bedroom, and then he helps you pick out a comfy pair of pjs!! which he just so happens to have a matching set of :D
anton would pull you close to his chest once you two are settled in bed and then kiss your forehead
"you're so pretty, baby" he'd whisper to you, with the pet name + compliment making your cheeks flush. you smile and curl into him some more.
"sorry for not listening, daddy."
anton starts humming to you quietly, a sure way of getting you to fall asleep.
"it's okay, angel. just sleep now, hm?"
this ended up being longer than i thought it would be, sorry! i hope you like it though and tysm for requesting <3

Back Market: Monster from Johnny Kelly on Vimeo.
Monster realises Monster is a monster.
We were commissioned by Back Market to tell this story to help encourage people to wean themselves off tech product launch cycles. We used a combination of live action puppetry, 2D facial animation and stop motion.
A lovely bunch of people worked on this, to name but a few: James Noellert designed the human characters. Andy Gent and his team made the puppets and some sets. Other sets were made by Aslyum. Previs and VFX adeptly handled by the beautiful brainiacs at Nexus. Full credits below——>

the types of littles cg!dreamies would take care of
caregiver!nct dream x gn!reader
a/n this is agere content ! all inappropriate interactions will be blocked. please don't interact if you sexualize age regression. thank you ! ദ്ദി ˉ͈̀꒳ˉ͈́ )✧
mark lee (ᓀ‸ᓂ)
a regressor on the older side! probably someone that can communicate their needs and wants with ease.
i feel like mark would be the type of cg that loves teaching you about his passions. he would sit you on his lap and have his hands over yours as he helps you play hot cross buns on the keyboard.
out of all the dreamies, i feel that mark's tiny would be the most fascinated with music and all its elements. you and mark would most likely spend a lot of your tiny time together in a band where the drums are cups and your sticks are pencils.
he's definitely patient and does his best to fulfill his baby's requests no matter how deep in their imagination they come from.
you want a unicorn drink? he'll do his best to make a unicorn with whipped cream and chocolate chips on top of your hot cocoa! you want to go to mars? a trip to the space museum!
huang renjun ૮ ˙Ⱉ˙ ა
a middle (12-15) regressor is definitely someone renjun could go tit for tat with.
you do have lots of little arguments that leave you with your arms crossed but you're always grateful for renjun at the end of the day.
he definitely holds you accountable for habits you know are good for you but you just don't want to for one reason or another.
but it's not as if renjun is a dictator!
renjun is a big fan of dressing up. he's like a little kid on a field trip except instead of asking 'are we there yet?' he asks 'am i pretty? you're making me pretty, right?'
for some reason, i feel like renjun would like to take pictures of you (or pretend to if you don't like being pictured when little). he just thinks you're the cutest thing in the whole wide world! if his tiny felt embarrassed by his fawning he'd only kiss the embarrassment away before continuing to do it some more.
lee jeno ૮ .◜◡◝ა
regardless of age, lee jeno is less of a caregiver and more of a stuffed animal come to life. or maybe a gentle guard dog.
he's usually snoozing on the couch while his tiny plays in the same room. you may think he's asleep but when you try to leave just for a second you hear him go 'where are you going, gumdrop?'
he's a little overbearing at times, which could be a problem especially for regressors on the older side, but he means well!
despite what others might think when first looking at him, jeno is not an iron-fist type of cg. unlike renjun, jeno's tiny can get away with poking his buttons most of the time. keyword: most.
lee donghyuck ʕ˙Ⱉ˙‧:ʔ
cg!donghyuck screams teenage babysitter. he likes kids, but he's kind of too embarrassed to admit it so he tries keeping a distance.
the best pairing for donghyuck would be a bratty little, someone that makes him care. someone that's so unapologetically themselves that he also begins to not care about the anxieties plaguing his mind.
he's still a little annoying as a cg; knocking a piece of track a little to the left so your train rolls off its route, beginning to build his own ice cream store with the block you were about to use, holding up your animal crackers in exchange for some cute and embarrassing poses.
donghyuck and his tiny are fighting the war of getting on each others nerves and neither side is ever gonna win but they fight on anyways.
"i love you, Angel." "...love you too, Channie."
na jaemin ଘ(੭ˊᵕˋ)੭
not to put all age regressors in a box, but i feel that jaemin would do well with the image you get in your head when you think of agere. pastel colors, pacis, the whole shebang.
like renjun, he likes playing dress up but specifically enjoys dressing you up. always the prettiest dresses or suits, never letting you even close a button by yourself.
more than dress up though, he definitely likes playing royalty. he likes being either a brave knight that protects you from an evil dragon or your trusty and loyal butler.
jaem as a caregiver would be the most fun thing ever (in my opinion). still, that doesn't mean he's a total jeno i mean pushover. who wrote that? wow that's crazy...
anyway, cg!jaemin is a scary guy. it's at those times when you know you messed up, maybe you broke a vase or something, and you know he should be mad but he's not. he's disappointed. that's a thousand times worse somehow and so you promise him in tears that you'll never do it again.
zhong chenle (ᯟ︿ᯏ)
this guy. this guy is the scariest.
if you have any little buddies and chenle is your cg? you will probably hang out everywhere but his place.
it's a total illusion though, he's not scary at all. he's a big, loud, goofy guy. he's just a little blunt and the fact he wears sunglasses indoors that it scares all the more shy littles away. i feel like this is a bit of a struggle because i imagine that, like chenle, his tiny would be a very friendly social butterfly and their 'baby radar' is nearly 99% infallible.
chenle's tiny is like a well-behaved version of hae's. they're both little gremlins at times but chenle's would definitely keep it under wraps about it.
chenle's tiny has a phd in malicious compliance to chenle's manner rules. lots of "stern" stares full of longing and 'i need this' along with "juice box, please. juice box, please. juice box, please. juice box, p-"
however, they also double majored in kisses and crayon portraits so chenle doesn't even have a chance to get mad.
park jisung (∩˃o˂∩)
jisung's tiny is so teeny tiny and shy, even around him.
jisung is a one in a million man because he's the only one that can instinctively, telepathically, via sign language knows exactly what his baby needs without them having said a word.
it's usually quiet when you're little. maybe you're drawing, maybe you're sleeping, maybe you're just staring off into space. for jisung's little, their regression is just a time when everything can freeze for a second and all that matters is that their favorite plushie is clean and ready to cuddle with.
if jisung had one word to describe the role he has with his little, he would have to say a wall. something firm, something strong, something that ensures that nothing outside is let in and nothing inside seeps out.
a/n hello ! i'm working on some other projects but in the meantime, have this ! i have been posting some of my work also on ao3 so in case you're not on tumblr often, you can also find my one-shots there ! i think i'm gonna keep the bulletpoints here for now tho. i'm hoping you're all having a great start to your springgg (or autumnif ur in the southern hemisphere). oh, i also have question for you! putting aside ur actual dream bias, who do you think would be the best cg for you? me personally, i feel like either jisung or jaemin hehe

The Avengers: Endgame
Over the last couple months I finally upgraded to somewhat modern TV and gaming rigs in the form of a 55” Samsung 4KTV and Xbox Series X. I own three 4K UHD discs, but one I already covered a couple years back with my entry of the BluRay version that came bundled with the 4K disc of Die Hard. The other is a two pack of the first two John Wick films, and rest assured those will get their day in the sun here eventually. From my research, the Xbox Series X is not a top shelf 4K BluRay player, at least not at the system’s launch before presumable system software updates, but also sounds like a fairly better quality version of the drive that came in the Xbox One X|S, and also supports upscaling of regular BluRays to 4K. Coincidentally, on top of my movie backlog pile was a movie I absolutely wanted to take advantage of that 4K upscaling and thus here we are with today’s write-up for 2019’s The Avengers: Endgame (trailer). WARNING: Unlike nearly most of my other movie recaps I will be diving into serious spoiler territory ahead.
The amount of hype leading up to Endgame was insurmountable. Anthony and Joseph Russo did an astounding job directing the first part in 2018’s Infinity War (read my entry for it here). Both that and Endgame top the three hour mark to squeeze in as many characters, references, periphery side plots and so much more from the previous 21 Marvel Cinematic Universe films that lead up to this finale. By accomplishing just that, both movies are the breeziest three hour viewings I have experienced because the Russo brothers do a commendable job at keeping the scenes flowing and doing their best to give everyone their proper time to shine.
The ending of Infinity War saw Thanos (Josh Brolin) deliver the snap heard around the world that vanished half of all life in the entire universe. It was a soul-crushing downer of a cliffhanger to end on, but the post-credits tag hinting at the cry of help for Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) left crowds with a glimmer of hope. This being based around comic books there is the unwritten rule where no one truly stays dead either, so part of the experience going into Endgame was to see how the remaining Avengers plan to bring everybody back. Endgame kicks off with the fresh effects of ‘the snap’ when it starts with Hawkeye’s family all getting dusted from him in the middle of a picnic.
The film transitions to the remaining un-dusted Avengers squad of Nebula (Karen Gillan) and Iron Man (Robert Downer Jr.) floating aimlessly in space until the convenient deus ex machina that is Captain Marvel miraculously tracks them down and hauls them back to Earth. A few weeks Avengers HQ tracks down Thanos on an isolated planet and with Captain Marvel’s power, they anticlimactically kill him off in a brief scene. This was one of the parts of the film that did not sit well with me after building up Thanos as this unrivaled threat in all the previous films, and to have the Avengers cold-bloodedly put him down in quick order seems so……unlike them, but he did off half the universe so I understand how the Russo’s felt justified for filming it that way, but I cannot help that it did not come across right, and could have been handled better. Of course, a more proper Thanos battle would be coming later in the final act thanks to my pet peeve plot device that is….
…TIME TRAVEL!!!! This and alternate dimension traveling I despise and have turned me off to many shows over the years like Lost and CW’s DC shows. The worst of it is indeed present here because meaningful character deaths that happened in Infinity War to Loki (Tom Hiddleston) and Gamura (Karen Gillan) become undone and their sacrifices proved for naught. All that griping aside however, I will give the Russo brothers credit because even with those qualms I feel they pull off time travel and have it appear as more than a convenient storytelling method. Again, major props because that is a hell of a hurdle to overcome. The filmmakers go out of their way in a couple scenes to directly call out Back to the Future’s style of time travel bullshit, and have a couple characters ever-so-carefully explain in detail and for the laymen how “real” time travel works.
This is all thanks to a rambunctious rat who inadvertently zaps Ant Man (Paul Rudd) out of the Quantum Realm…after being trapped there five years due to his team being on the end of a dusting before bringing him back. Ant Man deduces upon his return that he is able to undo the dusting through his van-quantum-realm-contraption, and convinces the Avengers to conjure up a plan they cleverly dub the “Time Heist” to travel back to capture all the Infinity Gems Stones before Thanos does. I loved how these scenes played out, and there is a plethora of fan service throughout it as the three squads of Avengers jump to different periods like the final battle of the original Avengers film, and a 1970 military base where Howard Stark (John Slattery) unknowingly meets his son. Plans do not proceed swimmingly to say the least, and past timeline Thanos becomes clued in to their plan and thwarts the Avengers attempt at trying to undo the past in a CG showpiece for the ages with his assault on Avengers HQ.
The CG fireworks continue to dazzle for the bulk of the final hour of the film with a climatic showdown between Thanos and his forces against The Avengers and the returning of the dusted Marvel characters. I have seen too many comic book films fail at translating over-the-top comic book action on the silver screen, but the Russo brothers always manage to pull it off. I fondly remember the theater crowd going gaga when Captain America (Chris Evans) summons Mjolnir and wallops Thanos with it. The women of Marvel have another moment to shine together where they collectively team up to kick ass. Moments of levity are brilliantly peppered in throughout the chaos for a much-needed chuckle from the nonstop adrenaline-boosting action. That final battle masterfully builds up to the dramatic sacrifice of Iron Man in the standout emotional scene of the film.
The resulting aftermath was heartwarmingly done here with a pre-recorded farewell from Iron Man, and a collage of nearly all the major and minor MCU characters at Iron Man’s funeral. I believe this is the first MCU film without a post-credits tag, and that is 100% fine by me, because the beginning of the credits is a lovingly crafted tribute to the original Avengers cast done in the fashion of the Original Series cast of Star Trek VI that resonated with me feeling the end of a pivotal era of the MCU that I have been largely enjoying since the original 2008 Iron Man.
I usually do not dive into this much detail and spoilers when recapping the movies here, but due to this being the final chapter of this era of the MCU films I could not help myself, and believe me there is so much more I wanted to dive in here on because like I said, the Russo brothers crammed in an incredible amount of narrative into three hours. There is so much ground in here it is impossible for me to recap it all, and that it will in all likelihood be the fastest three hour movie you will ever endure. I did not get a chance to even touch on over-the-hill Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and the hybrid Bruce Banner/Hulk (Mark Ruffalo (spoiler: they both killed it!)). Endgame unsurprisingly did major bank at the box office, so I feel safe knowing most of you reading this already watched it by now which is another reason I went all out on the spoilers.
I re-watched the film for this entry a second time with commentary from the Russo brothers, and writers Christopher Markus & Stephen McFeely, and that greatly helped explain some little tidbits that were easy to miss and/or not fully comprehend in the midst of the three hours. I know this is a little detail, but I want to give props to Marvel for being one of the few companies out there for shelling out resources to caption the commentary track! I exponentially appreciate it more than you know! The commentary helped with understanding why they did not do a lot for Black Widow’s (Scarlett Johansson) aftermath of her death because she has her prequel film set to release. Other notable takeaways from the commentary was how Stark’s “I am Iron Man” line was a last minute addition to the film, giving credit to Star Trek VI as inspiration for their credits sequence, being hopeful for Marvel capitalizing on Falcon donning Cap’s shield and lots of understandable love for the visual effects team for their hard work.
Aside from the commentary track, the BluRay has a second disc with just under an hour of bonus material. There is the requisite short, but top-of-the-line gag reel that is standard in most Marvel Studios home videos. There are five minutes of deleted scenes worth a look, with some of them lightheartedly covering up plot holes. Remembering Stan Lee is a touching tribute to Stan, filled with archived interviews from him on his experiences in the cameos, and showing plenty of delightful off-camera interactions with the cast and crew. There are well done character profile pieces for Thor, Black Widow, Captain America and Iron Man, with each one having countless cast and crew state proper kudos to what the actors have done for those characters over the years. If you only have time for one then I recommend Man Out of Time: Creating Captain America, because it goes into a little more detail than the others and Chris Evans has some intriguing introspection from his years with the character. Finally, there are short, but worthwhile pieces on the Russo brothers and the women of the MCU that should not be skipped out on either.
As I mentioned above, the hype building up to Endgame was insurmountable, but Joseph and Anthony Russo overcame the odds and delivered a gratifying conclusion to this era of the MCU. Watching the BluRay upscaled in 4K on a TV about a third bigger than my previous set made it a grander experience too for those showpiece moments. Sure I had quibbles and nitpicks I mentioned above, but by and large those are easily overcome by how much the Russo brothers got it right with this film. I am kicking myself for waiting a year and a half to re-watch it, but picked up on a lot of little things that went right over mine and Drax’s heads the first time out. If you have yet to give The Avengers: Endgame another viewing, then do not hesitate because you will not regret once again taking in this landmark epic that delivered against all odds!

Review: Toy Story (Lasseter, 1995)
I rewatched Toy Story and wrote a love letter.
Not that I would even pretend to know enough about film history to make this claim, but Toy Story has got to be one of the single most important films made in the last, like, 50 years, right? Even looking past its tight script or its exceptional cast or even how it marked the beginning of an astonishing hot streak for Pixar, its use of computer-generated animation has single-handedly shaped the current state of filmmaking more than just about any other film I can think of. If the first 60 years of American animated film history is defined primarily by hand-drawn precedent established by Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, then for better or for worse, Toy Story defines this second chapter. It's the Prometheus of CG animation, equally responsible for masterworks like Into the Spider-Verse and dreck like The Emoji Movie.
Well, maybe it's not entirely fair to put the last 25 years of CG animated movies on Pixar and Toy Story, but it makes a kind of logical sense. The issue might lie with how easy John Lasseter and company make it look. If I know anything about animation, I know that it's grueling, meticulous, difficult work. The best animated films -- including this one -- make it look absolutely effortless. The animation has, by and large, aged gracefully. At only 81 minutes, the film is a masterclass in tension and economy. There's really not an ounce of excess on this thing. The script is a series of one-liners, relentlessly piling up on top of each other like the world's funniest car crash, masterfully delivered by a fantastic roster of actors. Countless hollow imitators have followed the Toy Story formula in hopes of recreating its success, and the vast majority have failed.
A quick note on the cast. I mean, good lord, this cast. Tom Hanks, fresh off his back-to-back Oscar wins. Tim Allen at the height of his career. Plus Don Rickles, Jim Varney, Wallace Shawn, John Ratzenberger, Annie Potts, R. Lee Ermey, Laurie Metcalf!? All three of the sequels would go on to add even more of the world's best and funniest actors, but it's kind of miraculous that Pixar nabbed this cast for this film in the first place. Plus Randy Newman!
One or two of the sequels may arguably be better films. Pixar's produced films that aim higher and work even better than this one. All the same, 25 years later, Toy Story is still a graceful masterpiece and an easy high-point in both American animation and comedy filmmaking.

Animation Night 20 - Korean animation!
It’s a Thursday again, which means it’s the day for animation! We’re up to 20 of these now, and tonight the plan is to check out a few Korean directors. Not just South Korean, either!
You’ve almost certainly seen quite a lot of Korean animation before tonight, because animation studios from America and Japan frequently outsource significant parts of animation, particularly inbetweening, to South Korean studios where labour is cheaper. Although this is starting to change (as costs of living and wages in South Korea have risen, making other countries more attractive for outsourcing), many renowned ‘American’ series like Avatar: The Last Airbender succeeded on the immense talent of Korean animators.
Tonight, however, my focus is on Korean-directed, Korean-language animation. ...which means most of it has been frustratingly hard to find - in contrast to anime where nearly everything ends up with a bluray release and most things get decent subtitles and plentiful seeds, with Korean animated films I could usually only find DVD quality at best, typically in torrents that are barely surviving on their last few seeds or gone altogether. So some of the films I planned to watch tonight are still downloading, and I may have to adjust plans.
South Korean animation seems, from the limited overview I’ve been able to make, to be somewhat similar to the broader South Korean film industry in tone and style. The films I’ve found tend to be serious slice of life or dramas, with character designs leaning to the realistic, telling stories of growing up, guilt and adult ennui, and a few of them go hardcore into the gore. (I have one I may save for if we ever do a horror-themed night, perhaps on Halloween...)
I’d really like to be able to do indepth posts about the history of Korean animation studios and directors like I have been able to for anime, but unfortunately the information just isn’t available in English in the same way. So instead, I’m just going to describe what I’ve found...
Kim Moon-Saeng - Wonderful Days (aka Sky Blue) [2003]
One of the most visually impressive films I’ve got is Wonderful Days, dir. Kim Moon-Saeng. From what I’ve been able to find, Kim is best known for his extensive work in TV commercial animation, but Wonderful Days is his only narrative film.
So what is it? Visually, it takes heavily after cyberpunk anime like Ghost in the Shell, Psycho-Pass and Ergo Proxy. It’s a blend of CG backgrounds and cel animation, and - from what I’ve seen scanning through the film - it’s got a lot of impressively smooth, realistic animation.
The plot concerns a kind of post-apocalyptic setting with - as you’d imagine, from cyberpunk film - a severe class divide. Most of the survivors of humanity live in a walled city, while the ‘diggers’ work outside to provide them energy. The story concerns a digger named Shua, who ends up in a love triangle with a security officer, Jay, and her commander, Cade, while the a brutal crackdown by the city sparks a major revolt.
The film has mixed reviews, praising the animation but dismissing the story. Well, hey, it’s animation night innit - and there’s a lot of striking designs for masks and face markings, strong images of streets and machines, and especially a lot of very effective, naturalistic character animation. The animation style reminds me heavily of shows like Korra, but I can’t confirm if it had any of the same animators.
I have been able to find the Korean director’s cut of this film at the very last minute, so hopefully we won’t have to put up with the English dub.
Lee Sung-Gang - My Beautiful Girl, Mari [2002] and Yobi, the Five-Tailed Fox [2007]
Lee Sung-Gang got his start mostly in short animated films, but in 2002 he seems to have made a splash at Annecy with My Beautiful Girl, Mari, a gentle magical-realist story about a young boy in a fishing village coming to terms with the loss of his dad (to an accident) and best friend (who is moving to Seoul). He finds a strange marble which allows him, when he takes it to the ruined lighthouse just outside his house, to enter a magical world of flight and big fluffy dogs.
The film adopts a fully lineless, cel-shaded style that is unusual in animation, with a very realism-oriented drawing style. To me, by far the best part of it is the gorgeous animation of animals, particularly cats. While the humans often feel a bit stiff in their movements, the cats are lively and characterful in a way that shows a real love. The film’s naturalistic dialogue and scenes of fishing create a very strong sense of place, and there’s some lovely animation of water in addition to the excellent cats.
Lee briefly headed into live-action (pshew!), but returned to animation in 2007, with a mythologically themed story Yobi, the Five-Tailed Fox. This time, the animation takes much more after anime (at risk of cliché, there’s definitely signs of ghibli influence); the character designs are more stylised, the expressions more dramatic. The story concerns an alien stranded on Earth, who is adopted by a five-tailed fox who transforms herself into a human girl, taking the name Yobi. Yobi inevitably finds herself increasingly tangled with the human world, but suitable Peril arises in the form of a fox-hunter, and a magical soul-stealing lake.
Depending on the play of fate and the mood of the audience, I may end up showing either of these films. My main concern is that Mari is kind of slow-paced and doesn’t really feel like it goes anywhere - but perhaps people are in the mood for something dreamy about childhood loss. Yobi on the other hand definitely sounds like a kid-oriented movie, but one we might well enjoy for its creatures and animation.
SEK Studio - Squirrel and Hedgehog (1977-2012)
This is, so far, a collection of South Korean animation. For the economic and political reasons you’d expect, the North isn’t a huge player in the animation industry - but they do have one fairly large animation studio, known in English as SEK (Scientific Educational Korea).
SEK handles a fair amount of outsourcing work, largely for South Korean studios - which means they’ve ended up handling Western shows by passing down the outsourcing chain. For example, they did a lot of work on the Simpsons movie, and also handled inbetweening on an episode of Avatar: The Last Airbender (season 3 episode 1, if you’re wondering).
But they also produce various TV animation for their domestic audience! Their best-known series are The Boy General, Clever Racoon Dog and Squirrel and Hedgehog, and the latter has made its way out to be subtitled in English. You can find a collection of hardsubbed episodes on this Google drive.
Squirrel and Hedgehog is known for its startingly nationalistic tone and graphic violence. Its animal characters wear realistic military uniforms and fight with modern weapons. The story concerns a group of largely herbivorous animals who, facing invasion by the army of weasels, unite to fortify their hill. It is, Wikipedia says, regarded very fondly in the DPRK, and was even released outside North Korea in Italy as Brave Soldier, albeit with a nonsensical edit and redub.
I’ve previously wondered if the geopolitical themes were exaggerated by Western commentators, but no, they’re kind of transparently obvious when the animals start straight up wearing military uniforms and marching to patriotic songs. Later on, the Americans - represented by wolves - join, and apparently they are made to seem so imposing that the show has gotten a sort of American fandom taking it in a totally unintended light.
Despite this unintended flattering of the enemy, the jingoistic message of the show is more than clear. What’s odd about it is how little effort it makes to brush over any of the horrors of war - it’s not one of those American war cartoons where nobody dies. That said, despite being a semi-serious war drama, it has a lot of songs; character songs, choral songs, all sorts. The Russian character, Bear, does a whole dance performance in the first episode.
On an animation level, early 70s Squirrel and Hedgehog is a bit of a weird watch. It’s smooth enough, but the motions don’t have a lot of weight. It uses a lot of looping, and interpolates poses without a lot of regard for making the overall motion smooth, or expressing character through animation. A few years later, they’d improved the animation considerably - I downloaded episode 15 and saw some pretty strong full-frame animation of a ski chase. Over the course of its run it went from traditional cel animation to computer animation in Flash.
Mind you, I don’t want to give the impression that all North Korean animation is heavily militaristic propaganda, but... a lot of it is! Apart from this kind of propagandistic work, SEK has made a number of animations of fairy tales, taking after the tradition of Soviet animation in themes, if not style. There is also a notable North-South collaboration titled Empress Chung, but thanks to its extremely limited release, I have not been able to find a copy.
Other Korean animated films of note...
In the course of researching this, Elaine and I found a few other films - a gentle slice of life story about two orphans in a monastery titled Oseam (2003, dir. Sung Baek-yeop), and an intense zombie film titled Seoul Station. Although I’m not planning to screen them tonight, I hope we can get to them later - Seoul Station might fit a horror themed night, and Oseam can go with whichever of Lee Sung-gang’s films we don’t watch. There’s also some more realism-oriented drama in The King of Pigs (2011), in which a murderer unites with his childhood friend, and The Fake (2013), in which a priest dupes a small town. Perhaps down the line, we’ll get a chance to check out more of these films.
The schedule
My plan is basically to screen a Lee Sung-gang film, probably Yobi the Five-Tailed Fox, then episode 1 of Squirrel and Hedgehog, and finish up with Wonderful Days. After that, we have a bunch of specifically Korean animated music videos, courtesy of scattermoon (who helped compile this list). I’m going to rush to make a title card.
Animation Night 20 runs today at 7pm UK time, i.e. 40 minutes from this post going up (sorry it’s so late). The place is twitch.tv/canmom. Hope to see you there!
