Dungeon23: The Room List
Well folks, this has been one hell of a journey. I am not entirely happy with all 365 of the rooms that ended up here, and I was forced to completely abandon the proper goals of mapping and keying that, in theory, were the entire point of the challenge. So in the formal sense, I failed #Dungeon23 several months ago. But! I made it out of the year with a complete list of unique room/encounter concepts (staggeringly few of which are simply "empty"), and that's nothing to sneeze at.
I'm going to throw up another post (hopefully) soon to talk about the next steps with the project. As for now, keep in mind that I've had to do tons of reorganizing to complete the list, so a lot of chambers have been renamed and/or renumbered and won't match up with when they were originally published on the blog. Also, fair warning that a lot of them have "placeholder" names that will seem either absurd or meaningless (but they work for me as far as finding the relevant info in my own notes). Oh and, uh, yeah, major spoilers, of course.

Evolution Of Cranes
Tumblr media
A crane is a machine used to lift and lower heavy objects for any layman. It is one of the most significant machines across various industries right including automobiles, construction, metal manufacturing, power plants, and shipbuilding apart from many others.
But have you ever wondered where and how the concept of cranes came into being?
In this blog, we take a look at some of the details of the history, advancement, and consequently the practical use of cranes.
What exactly is a crane?
It is a machine that is hoisted with a tight rope, which can be wire ropes, chains, or sheaves. They are used in shifting very heavy objects from lower objects, which cannot be performed without stances. They are also used for lowering objects, which cannot be performed with human help.
The biggest advantage of using a crane is that it offers flexibility and mobility where obstructions are present and access to spaces with limited access.
Today with industrialization, and urbanization being carried out on a rapid level, the use of cranes is only going to get bigger and better. However, it will be interesting to note that the inception of cranes has been since time immemorial. In fact, they have been a part of human history for many years.
Did You Know: Cranes have been a part of human life since time immemorial.
The first cranes used in Mesopotamia were called Shadoofs. They were commonly used as irrigation tools
By 2000 BCE these shadoofs found their way into the villages of Egypt, where these cranes were further modified. By the 6th century BC, several archeological records show that in Greece cranes came to be used by adding compound pulley systems. Eventually, the Romans improved the mechanism of cranes and by the time in the 1800s in year 1843, William Armstrong invented the first hydraulic crane.
From then on one can say there was a massive transformation in the development of cranes. The reason Armstrong’s cranes were a huge success and paved the way for further modifications. From then on the company grew and Armstrong continued to improve his designs.
Some of the commonly used cranes in ancient times were Shadoofs, hydraulic press cranes, cable, and winch cranes.
Modern Cranes:
It is interesting to note the fact, that today’s modern-day cranes are largely inspired by Armstrong’s designs and several innovations have been carried out. The need for cranes over the years has grown manifold. This is because they are also used in several other industries apart from construction.
We take a look at some of the types of modern day cranes:Mobile cranes:
They are mounted on crawlers that offer greater mobility and can also be driven on highways. They can navigate the job sites very easily and can carry large amounts of weight. Mobile cranes are also known for their versatility and flexibility. They come in a wide range of sizes and configurations, and can be customized to meet the specific needs of a particular application.
Goliath Cranes:
Tumblr media
They are fixed on portable columns and have railed at the ground levels. Mostly used for any kind of outdoor application they have a specially designed steel structure that provides a wide range of work areas. These cranes are a type of heavy-duty industrial crane that are used for a variety of applications, including construction, shipbuilding, and materials handling. They are named after the biblical giant Goliath, due to their enormous size and impressive lifting capacity.
Bulk-handling Cranes:
It is well-known for carrying large to very large volumes of materials such as coal and other minerals. Bulk handling cranes have a specialized hook that can grab and lift heavy-duty materials.
Tower Cranes:
One of the most commonly used cranes used in construction they have some of the most extraordinary lifting capabilities. They are an essential mechanism in almost all the construction sector.
Jib Cranes:
Tumblr media
They are typically bridge cranes installed over a workstation and used for several repetitive tasks.
Choosing the right crane:
As mentioned above, different cranes are used for different purposes. So one needs to have the right understanding of which crane to go for. Picking the right crane for your work involves research such as the project’s terrain, the total size of the project, the overall weight of the materials, and the timeline of the project.
At Santek, we are your expert guidance in helping you choose and provide high-quality cranes for your specified industry.

There’s something of a snap, a sound akin to the link of a chain finally breaking. Tension suddenly floods away, years of darkness finally begin to fade as the curtains part and the lights come on. In the center of it all stands Logan, former king and tyrant, watching as black ichor begins to break apart and float from the ground around him and his soldiers. The shadowy humanoid creatures that had been fighting them suddenly begin to fade into nothing more than dust, the living suits of armor that had towered over them topple to the ground and begin melting into the ichor and fading just the same.
The noise of the people around him fades away into nothing as Logan’s mind clears. No longer does it feel as though there’s something hunched over his shoulder, no longer does his body feel weighed down by feelings of terror and anxiety. The hold that the Crawler had on him is finally broken, its claws leaving deep marks in his conciousness that, now presented as fresh, open wounds, may now heal. All of this comes as a sudden revelation to Logan as he feels the breaking of the link. Thoughts come hurtling into his mind, overlapping as he comes to realize just what being freed from the Crawler's hold must mean —
( 'he did it, he did it', 'where is he', 'please let him be okay,' ),
and all Logan can think about is that his brother set out to defeat the darkness and now he must have, he must have done it!
A year ago, all Logan would have thought Cedric capable of was talking about how he was going to prevent the darkness from falling over Albion. Now, with the haze cleared and the evidence presented into his mind and his heart, he knows better. He knows Cedric will manage the kingdom as a kind, benevolent force that Logan failed so terribly at being. There's guilt in the back of his mind as he realises just what he'd done over the past five years, how he'd ruined so much that his parents had set up for him and Cedric both.
With a quiet click, Logan's sword is sheathed and his hand comes to rest upon the hilt. His soldiers have done much the same, beginning to clean up the mess around them and unbarring doors for the people still in Bowerstone.
The streets are hesitantly quiet as the soldiers begin cleaning up the rubble and the mess caused by the fighting. Logan begins heading across the bridge as his men continue their work — none bother him, seemingly fine with letting their commander turn away and leave them behind. For some reason he’s drawn to the square, partially blocked by stone fallen from one of the larger buildings. He pushes past a snapped wooden sign and sees a group before him.
At the center is his younger brother, the king, holding a very still Walter. It’s as though a switch is flipped, turning on the sound as he hears the first sob, the breaking of his brother’s voice as he says Walter’s name over and over. Beside him is Benjamin Finn, his hand pressed against Cedric’s back. Ben looks up momentarily as Logan approaches — Kalin steps aside and Page does, as well, making room for him as he approaches and crouches down in front of Cedric and Walter.
Cedric’s eyes, now the same gray that their father shared, turn to look up at Logan.
“He’s gone.” Cedric says, throat tight with another sob as he does so. Logan feels the way his own cheeks match the wetness of his younger brother’s and says nothing.
Ben’s hand pulls away. Logan reaches forward and brushes Cedric’s hair from his face —
the same way he used to when they were young and Cedric cried —
and there’s recognition in Cedric’s eyes that Logan is beginning to be himself again, that the darkness that had festered in his heart is gone. But Logan can’t help but feel ridden with guilt ( for the first time since leaving Aurora ) that the cost of finally feeling again, of being family to his younger brother again is Walter.
Walter, who’d taught them both how to hold a sword, who’d been the teacher that their father didn’t have the time to be.  Who Logan had betrayed so terribly and lost the trust of.
If only — if only he'd been able to apologize properly. But the past isn't going to allow him to do so any time soon, so Logan tilts his chin up and stares at his brother, placing a hand on his shoulder.
He can't bring himself to speak.
But maybe that's alright. Maybe what Cedric needs is simply the company of family.
Logan hopes he can be that.

The stranger makes a noise of voiced agreement. “Mood.”
Tumblr media
September 8th.
One thing they never tell you before going to Uni, is that it’s fucking mental on Move In Day.
Obviously, he had some idea that the student digs would be fairly busy with students moving in, but he never expected to be waiting in a thick line of tired and excited first years for around fifteen minutes, only to then wait another twenty just for the student- who, by the way, was way too busy picking at her purple nail varnish to give two damns about Namjoon’s clearly very important moving in schedule- to find his key on the board barely 50 centimetres away from where she was sitting.
So, yeah- when his sister comes to Uni after him, he’s definitely going to warn her about the madness that is Move In Day, because clearly nobody else had cared if Namjoon was stuck waiting like a doormat for one student who thinks she’s something to hand him a key. I mean, how hard can it be? He doesn’t get it.
“Sorry about the wait,” another male student, who noticed the lack of enthusiasm from second year student apparently named Jisoo, says as he moves from behind the desk to give Namjoon a silver key on a chain, with two other keys present. “Here are your keys- one’s for the front door of your flat, second is for the main building in-case you’re late after hours and the third is for your pigeon box.” He pauses: “no help from your parents?”
Namjoon shrugs politely, “Just me. My parents are back in Ilsang, couldn’t make it.”
“Bummer,” the student replies. Along with the keys, he shoves a brown paper bag into Namjoon’s hands with a toothy smile. “Your complimentary moving in gifts, from the students who moved out! Thanks for picking Blossom Island as your student accomodation!”
Although Namjoon wants to tell him that Blossom Island was the only cheap option out of three absurdly priced accomodations for first years, he doesn’t; instead, he smiles, lips closed and dimples on display, nodding his head and turning all within the same second. The student moves away after, so he doesn’t feel bad about ending the conversation so abruptly.
Blossom Island is located smack bang outside of campus, across a small stream that Namjoon thought would be filled with blossom, but instead is littered with algae and tinfoil. It’s large, tall like a regular apartment complex, with a courtyard out the front with a bouncy castle that Namjoon can already see some people jumping on with what he assumes is their new roommates.
Namjoon leaves the lobby- should he call it a lobby? It was more of a downstairs kitchen and living room, with two small sofas and a mounted flat-screen, a pool table pushed weirdly in the middle of the colourful boxed room and a door near the back wandering into the community study area, another door for what he guesses is for laundry. Hauling his suitcase and big, cardboard box in his arms across the courtyard, he follows the number on the key- number 8, floor 6, Kyoto Building and barely makes it five steps without almost dropping the box entirely, all thanks to some jerk wearing Thrasher and a beanie.
“That’s what you get for not tying your shoelaces.”
Mid-crouch, Namjoon looks over his shoulder and spots Min Yoongi stepping out of the building, followed by a rather proud looking set of parents, preening at the fact that their son is going into Nursing. Due to that, he bites back a curse word he figures would be impolite for the elders, and manages a smile in the sun.
“What? He clearly pushed into me,” Namjoon reasons, standing upright and saying a hasty hello to Yoongi’s parents, who, in all honesty, have never really liked him much. He laughs breathily, waiting for a few seconds before asking, “where are you?”
Yoongi checks his key. “Number 13, Floor 0, Juko Building. What kind of name is Juko, anyway?”
“Beats me,” Namjoon scoffs. “I think Juko’s close to Kyoto. I’ll come visit when you’re all settled and moved in, yeah?”
Yoongi nods, already beginning to walk away. “Yeah, I’ll get your mug out ready.”
That’s the thing with Yoongi, Namjoon thinks as he walks away; he’s always been about the little things in life. In the many, many years that Namjoon has known Yoongi, he’s never really changed- Yoongi has always been compassionate and cutely caring, buying two mugs instead of one and making pasta for two when he knew Namjoon was due to visit on days his parents were working late. And he feels bad, because Yoongi is a giving guy, not a receiving one.
He watches as Yoongi leaves with his parents, and he feels weirdly sad. It’s none of his business, too, as he watches the three Min’s enter the Juko Building, painted a pastel pink with mint compliments, swirling patterns dancing as the leaves on the trees move in the whisper of wind.
Namjoon now has the urge to paint.
Tumblr media
In Number 8, Floor 6, Kyoto Building, Kim Seokjin finally sets down the last potted plant on the sparse looking shelf above his desk, and he steps back with his hands on his hips to admire the minimal effort. Although it definitely took some struggle, what with his Dad accidentally dropping his bag with his Nintendo inside and his Mother judging his absurd amount of pink bath-towels, Seokjin has a feeling in his stomach- the feeling where you know that everything is going perfectly.
There’s a smell in the air; blossom from the large tree outside his window, propped open on the hatch to allow a breeze air out the room. Since his roomie hasn’t arrived yet, the least he can do is get rid of the stuffy smell, something strangely similar to pool chlorine. He inhales it deeply, a smile tugging at his lips. Seoul weather amazes him- even though Gwacheon is a blink away, Seokjin is already starting to feel like a new person.
Maybe it’s just University excitement. Maybe it’s University nerves. But, maybe it’s also because he really needs a wee and can’t think properly.
He waits nicely for his parents to finish up straightening every single crease in his bedsheets before saying goodbye. Although he might tease to their faces that he won’t miss them, and they won’t miss him, Seokjin knows from the minute they open the door to head back out to the corridor that it’s going to take a while to adjust to life without the nagging, but endearing, guidance of his family.
Because Seokjin has always sort of been the baby boy of the Kim’s from Gwacheon- his older brother inherited a type of broodiness that Seokjin is thankful he hasn’t got yet, and so Seokjin’s always been the favourite. The favourite crawler, the favourite footballer, the favourite baker and painter- in honesty, Seokjung never wanted any of that. Seokjin’s proud of who he is- he’s so fucking proud of his family. So he sort of takes pride in being the baby boy of the Kim family. He wears it like armour, glistening armour that represents him in front of a whole army of potential threats and friends.
Jinyoung, an old friend, used to say it was embarrassing- as if Jinyoung doesn’t have a comfortable enough life with parents who would murder for him, but Seokjin doesn’t care. Why should he be ashamed of being loved? Most families aren’t as close as the Kim’s, so he takes extra care in making sure his family know that he loves them. That’s the sort of guy he is- giving, occasionally receiving, but giving, giving his whole heart and soul to everybody else in order to make others happy.
Seokjin pinches the bridge of his nose as the door closes with a sickening click, the noise muting around the faint buzz of traffic across campus and the baby birds in the nest a few floors down on a branch, fluttering in the wind like wings. He’s so lost in the way the small twigs are woven together, like the way a spider builds a web, or an ant a colony, that he doesn’t realise three minutes have passed.
Now he really needs a wee.
Tumblr media
When Namjoon opens the door to room 8, he’s surprised.
Not shocked, but surprised. Because there’s a difference between shock and surprise- shock is entering a room and finding a serial killer, but surprise is walking into a room and finding a party. The difference is in the level of reaction, and Namjoon hadn’t walked in and been completely thrown off by a wall of cute posters and the obvious collection of DS games and a cool looking computer. If anything, he’s intrigued. Surprised. Pleasantly surprised, perhaps.
To the right, Namjoon hears the toilet flush and he knows that he has a couple seconds to look around the room and plonk his bags and box on the plain bed before his roommate emerges from the bathroom. As he sets them down, he casts a gaze towards the right side of the room where his roomie has claimed a bed, a desk and a small looking wardrobe near the door. On the wall next to his bed, a collection of posters have been washi taped to the boring blank canvas- although, as an artist, Namjoon considers anything blank and white to be inviting and anything but boring, because a canvas holds endless opportunities- and his bed covers are a washed out blue, a colour that now, actually, as he’s looking at it, is becoming more chiffon coloured.
It’s evident his roommate likes video games- half the posters on the wall are related to games he knows that they must like; Animal Crossing, a small Stardew Valley postcard and a commissioned drawing of Jinx from LoL, taped next to a large artwork of Mario Kart and more postcard art of games Namjoon thinks he’s heard of but isn’t sure- The Last of Us, Tekken, Zelda. He pretends not to notice the small Minecraft postcard in the corner of the mural but weirdly enough, he finds it endearing knowing that someone at University still plays Minecraft.
Most of all, Namjoon notices the strange obsession with The Sims, as seen through multiple artworks and the fantastic collection of Sims3 Expansion packs sitting on the shelf above his bed, next to pop figures and a photo frame of a group of friends.
He wonders if his roommate will let him use the expansion packs when he’s bored.
“Oh, hey.”
Clearly having not heard the bathroom door open, Namjoon spins on the spot to look back at the bathroom, where his roommate stands with his hand animatedly raised in a wave, a smile lifting his cheekbones. They look pale, almost watery, but Namjoon doesn’t say anything. He knows why.
“Hey. Namjoon,” he says, leaning forward to shake his hand. For a moment, his roommate stares at the hand, as if wondering what to do with it. “What?”
His roomie shakes his head, moving to shake his hand once, up and down, before letting it drop. “Nothing. It’s just, well, how many people give handshakes nowadays?”
Namjoon thinks it over in his head. “Well, a lot of people. Useful in business, and stuff. A manager might want to shake your hand at a job interview.”
As he says the words, Namjoon can tell by the passing look on his roommates face that he wasn’t expected to give an answer. He stops talking after that, looking back to his bed with a feeling similar to embarrassment, while his roommate moves towards the window and clears his throat awkwardly.
“Seokjin.” He finally introduces himself. Seokjin- it has a ring to it. Namjoon says it over in his head, growing familiar with it. Now that he’s mentioned it, Namjoon looks back over his shoulder and realises that he looks like a Seokjin. The name suits him. “What’re you studying here?”
“Art and Design,” Namjoon replies with a brief smile over his shoulder. Seokjin isn’t looking, anyway. “Nothing too crazy.” He looks at the wall of posters- “Are you studying graphics?”
“Yeah. I’m studying Digital Art,” Seokjin replies, and it’s clear in the way his whole body moves as he says it that he’s passionate about his subject. He laughs shortly, “Isn’t it funny how we’re both doing art and we got pushed together? Do you think that’s intentional?”
Namjoon shrugs, taking out his clothes first from one of his suitcases. “Maybe. I’m glad you’re Digital Art and not Performing Arts. One, this room is not big enough to dance and sing and two, I don’t want to be woken up by a classical alarm clock. You know?”
Seokjin laughs and it suffices as a reply.
As Namjoon sifts around his bag and pulls out the remainder of his clothes, Seokjin turns around and watches for a swift three seconds, and then moves back towards his desk and absent-mindedly moves around his keyboard, straightening it up.
“Do you need any help?” he asks, and as Namjoon turns to catch his eye, he notices he means it genuinely.
“Uh, I’m alright,” Namjoon replies, and even though Seokjin can clearly see the amount of work he has left to do to his half of the bedroom, he doesn’t pry and decidedly drops it. He shrugs.
“Alright then. I’m gonna head out,” Seokjin says. He gestures with his head to the hallway. “Out on campus, they’re doing that thing. What do they call it- Wildflower? I think I just wanna go meet some people. I can wait for you, and we can go together, if you want?”
Namjoon does want. He really wants to. But he takes several glances back at his boxes and frowns deeply. And anyways, he’ll have plenty of time to hang out with Seokjin later, won’t he?
“I’ll pass,” Namjoon rejects him softly, a smile on his lips as if to say, I do want to come but I’m way too busy. Seokjin’s lips twitch into a pursed mouth and he nods. “I’ve just got a lot to do. We could hang out later, if you want?”
“Sure,” Seokjin replies, already inching towards the door. “Yeah, alright. If you need help, just text me. I’ve got my number on the pinboard above my desk- just incase, you know?”
Namjoon glances over; surely enough, on a corkboard pinned to the wall above his desk and beneath the shelf, he can see the sleek black letters printed with “emergency number” written next to it in messy handwriting. He smiles, mostly because he’s never seen someone have their own phone number hung up in their room before, and nods without looking in Seokjin’s direction. “Okay, thanks, Seokjin-ssi.”
Seokjin makes a sound similar to a laugh, air through his nose, a small intake of high pitched breath afterwards. Out the corner of his eye, Namjoon can see him hovering his hand over the handle and to be polite, he finally looks over. Something tells him he was waiting for that.
“Seokjin should be fine,” Seokjin replies with a smile.
Tumblr media
By the time Namjoon finishes sorting out his things (and by sorting out, he means that he’s hung up his clothes and kicked the cardboard box towards his desk out of the way), Seokjin’s still not back from Wildflower, and quite frankly, he’s bored.
As if by a magnetic pull, he finds himself leaving Kyoto building to trudge in the mid-move-in-manic, across the small courtyard where the bouncy-castle has deflated thanks to someone jumping on it wearing shoes, and towards Juko building, a big clump of pastel next to the white blossom tree that Namjoon is jealous of. Yoongi’s room, even back at his home in Daegu- where Namjoon had lived throughout his entire high-school life before his parents moved back to Ilsang during his final year-, was somewhere Namjoon had felt completely and utterly accepted. At home.
He always found it funny how Yoongi said the same thing for him- his bedroom back home was small, smaller than the dorm room he has now. It was an average room, with small bold letters spelling out his name on the front of his door, and his walls were painted a navy blue with dark wood floors that went through the entire house, with thrown around covers and three pillows to sleep with and furniture which didn’t match the colours. But Yoongi’s room was different. Yoongi’s room was Yoongi.
Slanted ceilings and an off-white coloured paint-job on the walls, with grey curtains and white sheets and an electric piano pushed up against the window-wall, overlooking a small line of houses out the front of the street Yoongi lived on, a tree that turned orange in October. On his walls, Yoongi liked to keep it minimal, minus the posters of his favourite artists and a little area above his desk for pictures of him and Namjoon, his first family pet, a ticket to his first family vacation when he was thirteen, dried flowers from a tiny bundle he was given on a Valentine’s Day. His first Valentine’s gift. A memory. A wall of memories, stuck with shimmery tape and dried blue-tac on the white, unremovable, stuck like glue. It was everything Namjoon wanted in a room. It was everything Namjoon needed in a place to feel completely and utterly safe.
Namjoon wasn’t surprised that Yoongi had stuck with the bland style of dorm room, compared to the bed next to him which his roommate- a kid studying Music with an incredible obsession with BoA and Michael Jackson- who, even though he was an amazing artist, Namjoon always felt weirded out by.
He stands by the doorframe as Yoongi shuffles to straighten his blanket at the end of his bed, simply looking at the decor, taking it all in with a deep breath. His roommate stared at Namjoon waiting in the doorway and pulled his lips to a frown, excusing himself, “...heading to Wildflower, bye,” being the only words he ever said to Namjoon.
“Namjoon, I hate it.”
“You’ve been here for two hours,” Namjoon frowns, sitting on his roommate’s bed. He won’t mind (only he does, and he notices the imprint of Namjoon’s arse left behind which he thought would disappear after five minutes.) “It’s not that bad, surely?”
Yoongi shakes his head adamantly. “I wanna go home, Joon. I don’t wanna do nursing.”
“You might really like it, though,” Namjoon sighs. “You never know!”
“I don’t want to study nursing,” Yoongi repeats himself through pouted lips that Namjoon can hear. “I wanted to do art, or music like my stupid roommate. I don’t know why I’m here, Namjoon, I really don’t know why I’m doing this to myself.”
Namjoon knows it’s hard for Yoongi. His family expect too much- like most parents, actually, Yoongi knows they want the best for him. But, the best isn’t forcing him into a nursing degree.
Toying with the frays on Yoongi’s roommate’s blanket, Namjoon says, “hey, hey, calm down. It’s fine- if you don’t like the first three classes, you can’t be expected to stay. You’ve got to do what you want to do.”
Yoongi bites his lip before replying. “I have nowhere to go if I drop out. I’ll do a year, maybe. Maybe half a year. Oh, I don’t fucking know. I don’t wanna give up and let down my family, you know?”
Namjoon does know. His parents had wanted him to be a lawyer. His sister, Kyungmin, wanted Namjoon to do something with his music. But, like the delinquent he is, Namjoon always knew he had a passion for art. Drawing made him happiest- letting his thoughts draw something on a blank canvas was the closest thing to real magic. Singing your feelings is one pleasure, but capturing the colours and movements onto paper was something Namjoon found absolutely rewarding. Thankfully, his parents knew there was no point in forcing him into doing something he wouldn’t enjoy. He was lucky.
“Yeah, I know.”
Yoongi knows Namjoon knows, and he also knows Namjoon doesn’t know what to say. He pulls at the bridge of his nose and lets out a low grunt. “Anyway. How’s your roomie? A weirdo?”
Namjoon shakes his head. “No, not really. I mean, he’s really into video games but it’s not overbearing. Kinda endearing. He’s fun. Seokjin.”
“Oh, cool,” Yoongi replies, nodding slowly. “You get all the good stuff, you know that?”
“What’s mine is yours,” Namjoon says with a frown.
At that, Yoongi smiles. “Yeah. I know, Joon.”
Tumblr media
Wildflower lives up to the frantic Google search that Seokjin did moments before heading down to check it out. Even before arriving, he could smell the variety of foods on rickety stalls, and hear the experimental strum of a live band getting ready to play near the main building to the University campus.
Ducking his head underneath the waving arm of another female first-year, Seokjin took a stroll around the small section of Wildflower, politely looking at the bits and bobs he could purchase, like complimentary University flags and tapestries for walls, or a coffee where the change went to a local suicide-prevention charity. He bought one, a tea that was too milky for his taste, and continued walking.
He hadn’t bought much change with him. After the rather awkward first meeting with Namjoon, Seokjin had let it slip his mind. Regardless, he wasn’t willing to let the lack of coins and a credit card spoil his First Day mood. Inhaling the smell of a nearby Jjinmandu stand, he let his stomach steer him towards it, collecting the spare change in his pocket- luckily for him, he had around 4,000 in his jacket pocket which more than comfortably paid for a portion of Mandu.
“Here you go,” the server hands Seokjin his small paper dish of Jjinmandu with a smile, a smile that reminded Seokjin of his third-year teacher back when he was a child. Warm, inviting, kind, a mother’s smile. She smiled toothily when Seokjin handed her more than he was being charged, saying it was a tip, first day luck, or something. She bowed her head meekly.
Without wanting to hold up the slightly growing line, Seokjin moves out of the way and towards a small cluster of metal tables and chairs, shivering as the umbrellas moved in the wind, passing the sauces with a thoughtful pause. He has time to kill; he puts his dish on the small counter and puts a tiny blob of sauce in the corner, and he dips his finger in to taste it. He recoils visibly, finding the taste too bitter.
From somewhere behind him, Seokjin hears what sounds like laughter and he turns, surprised, and finds another student with a bright orange lanyard hung around his neck. He’s a total stranger, with hair pushed into a black beanie and a denim jacket covering a brown shirt, with some black jeans with the knees cut out. On his feet, worn out Converse. Seokjin does a double take.
“You know that’s spicy BBQ, right?”
Weirdly enough, Seokjin finds that he sounds exactly like what he thought he would. He stares at his glasses, first, and the way they slide down his nose, slightly oily because of the heat.
“Don’t you usually have teriyaki with Mandu?” he continues, wandering over to glance at the bottles of sauce, before pushing a slightly stained bottle towards Seokjin with a smile. “There. Honestly, scrape off the BBQ, this will taste so much better.”
Seokjin feels dumb. “I only usually have the tomato chilli. “
“Yeah, and BBQ?”
“No,” he replies, and then he laughs quietly, “no, never BBQ. Let’s call that...first day experimenting.”
The stranger nods along, shoving a mouthful of his own Mandu. Seokjin wants to point out that he has sauce on the corner of his mouth, but it feels rude. He barely knows him.
Glancing at the lanyard around his neck, Seokjin finishes his mouthful- “Are you staff?”
“What?” the stranger asks, caught off guard. Then, he looks down at the lanyard and smiles, politely, not in mockery, and shakes his head, disturbing feathery hairs that were once tucked up into the beanie. “Oh, no. No, I’m a first year.” He chortles at Seokjin’s stunned expression. “What, do I look really old?”
“No,” Seokjin replies. “I was just...surprised. I don’t know- today’s been weird for me. I’m all over the place.”
The stranger makes a noise of voiced agreement. “Mood.”
They stand in silence for a couple moments after that, eating, staring off at the little stream that ran around the perimeter of the small square, listening to the sound of the live band kicking off their setlist with a slow song appropriate for the weather.
The stranger swallows his Mandu, pointing at Seokjin with his spork without really realising, “oh, I’m Hoseok by the way.”
Hoseok. A name to the face.
“Seokjin,” he replies. Now he’s finished his Jjinmandu. “Digital Art.”
Hoseok makes a noise. “Woah, no way.” Gesturing to himself, “Art and Music.”
Seokjin wants to laugh. “That’s so weird. My roomie also does art. It’s like I’ve been thrown into a pool full of art students.”
“Yeah. Well, we are in the Arts Square. Wouldn’t it be weird if I was doing Chinese studies and I hung around in the Arts Square on my first day?”
“True,” Seokjin nods.
Talking to Hoseok is easy. It’s so fucking easy- it’s as if Hoseok has been a friend for years. They walk together, along the small path that barely fits them both, weaving around the stream. Seokjin learns that Hoseok is from Gwangju, and has a sister who designs clothing in the city. Hoseok, in return, learns that Seokjin barely escaped being a lawyer and comes from a family inheriting endless zeros. It doesn’t bother him. It usually bothers people.
“It’s cool that you got to do what you wanted to,” Hoseok says as they walk further along campus. Now, they’ve reach the on-campus convenience store, the artificial lighting making Hoseok squint, even though daylight still pushed on. “Most kids don’t when they’re in your kind of position.”
Hoseok quickly looks over, “I don’t mean that in a bad way, I only-”
“No,” Seokjin agrees, nodding and thrusting his hands into his pockets. He dips his head upwards, inhaling the smell of the sunshine, before looking at Hoseok with a friendly smile. “No, you’re right. Most kids don’t. I’m lucky.”
Hoseok’s grateful Seokjin didn’t misunderstand. “Hm, maybe we’ll be in each-other’s classes.”
He says it with a hopeful tone, lightly nudging Seokjin’s shoulder with a small smile, that caused dimples to spread across his lower cheeks.
“I hope so,” Seokjin replies, but the sound of the stream covers it. Hoseok keeps walking, not making it known if he heard. He probably hadn’t.
Tumblr media
Namjoon rolls over the next morning, not quite remembering how he got home and when, and squints at the Sepia screen of his phone. It reads 6:45am, too fucking early to be awake on a Saturday.
did you get home ok yoongi
dont think i care about you or anything yoongi
Namjoon snorts quietly, wincing when he thinks he’s woken up Seokjin across the room. But, when he looks over towards Seokjin’s side of the dorm, he notices that he’s not even in bed. His sheets are tucked in tightly, and his jacket is absent on the coat hangers on the back of the door.
Holy shit, Seokjin gets up early.
yeah. hows minjoon, the name robber joonie
seriously fuck off he’s playing fred videos yoongi
it’s fucking 7am yoongi
Namjoon scoffs, mostly to himself- because who else is he going to scoff too?-, and rolls over flatly to press his feet onto the flattened out carpet of his room. The sun barely peeks through the shitty curtains, and he yawns loudly, feeling the euphoria of a morning stretch. Namjoon sighs with pleasure at the feeling of his body stretching out, letting his arms drop and grabbing his phone to reply to Yoongi, who Namjoon’s surprised is awake, even when Fred is involved.
i thought fred had died, fr joonie
bitch me too but here we have his channel, still screeching away about rubber sharks in his tiny swimming pool yoongi
im really not joking joon. i wanna quit so bad i’ve been here less than 24 hours and i’m already fantasising about drinking the bathroom bleach yoongi
He’s about to reply when the door to their dormitory room swings open, and the hostility of the swing almost makes him drop his phone on the floor. Namjoon scrambles to catch it, staring up with surprise at the sight of Seokjin carrying two mugs of what appears to be tea. Namjoon smells the cranberry as Seokjin comes closer with a sheepish, yet almost smug, smile. Bare in mind, Namjoon hates cranberry tea; at the smell he smiles and fakes joy.
“Saw your post-it saying you had to set an alarm for seven,” Seokjin said casually. “Figured you’d be up by the time I came back with this...hope you like cranberry.”

Ignis’ Favorite Foods (And What They Say About Him)
1. Fluffy Chiffon Cake
This is my favorite of Ignis’ favorites.  Chiffon cake is one of the bets cakes. I it’s light, airy and not too sweet.  It’s also one of the newest--it has only been around since the 1920s.  An American insurance salesman invented the cake, but he carefully guarded the recipe.  He served the cake at a chain of restaurants in Hollywood (The Brown Derby) where it became popular with celebrities.  It was eventually sold to General Mills and the recipe was released nationwide in 1947.  It was backed by a big marketing campaign that made it a hit (source).
Ignis initially seems like a man who isn’t much for desserts and sweets, so this favorite surprised me, but I immediately found it endearing.  This no nonsense, hard working badass loves chiffon cake.  After a little investigation, I discovered that Japan has its own unique take on chiffon cake that may help explain Ignis’ love for it.  Japanese Chiffon cake is very similar to the traditional American recipe, but it’s often prepared in different pans and sliced like the one yousee in game (check out this guide).  It is also prepared as a cupcake--like these Hokkaido chiffon cupcakes.
Tumblr media
It’s easy to imagine Ignis coming across one of those Hokkaido style Chiffon cupcakes at an Insomnia coffee shop.  Maybe he frequently stopped at a coffee place that sold them (we know he’s a coffee addict). It makes me happy to think of Ignis enjoying a piece of this cake with a cup of coffee.  It is an uncomplicated pleasure that he richly deserves.
More faves after the cut!
2. Breaded Cutlet with Tomato
Tumblr media
This dish looks a lot like Japanese chicken Katsu.  Chicken katsu is similar to Western schnitzel dishes.  It’s got a tasty, crunchy, panko exterior and is often served with a tart sauce (the Japanese version seems to be served with curry quite often).  The FFXV version includes a Lucian tomato sauce.  I wonder if this dish is a bit of a “comfort food” back in Insomnia.  I can imagine Ignis eating a dish like this a lot when he was growing up. It’s hearty, but somehow light and no doubt one of the few dishes involving vegetables that Noctis would readily eat.
3. Fisherman’s Favorite Paella
Paella is a classic (and delicious) Spanish dish (specifically from Valencia).  The word “paella” is derived from the Spanish word for pan -- a reference to the special kind of pan used for paella.  The foundation of a paella dish is saffron infused rice.  The aromatic saffron makes it delicious and gives it the distinctive yellow hue.  There are many kinds of ingredients you can put into a paella--chorizo, chicken, seafood--it all depends on the variety of paella you want.
Tumblr media
Ignis’ favorite paella is a seafood version.  Seafood paella is definitely one of the more popular forms.  All kinds of seafood can be used, but it’s traditional to include some shellfish (like the mussels you see in the photo of Iggy’s favorite).  Paella is a hearty, aromatic dish that is very popular worldwide.  Ignis’ preferred version, though, speaks of someone with slightly more expensive tastes (though that depends greatly on what part of the world you live in).
Tumblr media
This dish is acquired by ordering it at the Mother of Pearl restaurant.  Given Ignis’ penchant for seafood, it’s not surprising one of his favorite dishes comes from one of the best seafood restaurants on Eos.  When you visit Galdin Quay, Ignis will “idle” around the Mother of Pearl, watching Coctura cook.  Occasionally, I’ve seen players suggest Ignis has a “crush” on Coctura, but I think this is a professional sort of interest--one chef admiring another.
4. Horntooth Meatpie
Tumblr media
I know Ignis only has a British accent in the EN version of the game, but this meat pie is a very Anglo choice.  You get the recipe for this dish by observing a female hunter eating it outside the Meldacio General Store (I’m always amused by scenes like this--4 guys staring at you while you eat).  The fact that it’s a hunter favorite suggests this is a very hearty dish.  This fave is just more evidence that Ignis isn’t particularly snobbish about food.
5. Tomalley-Filled Dumplings
I thought I knew a lot about food going into FFXV, but I had never eaten “tomalley” before and didn’t have a very good idea of what it was.  Some seafood fans probably already know this, but tomalley is actually the pancreas/liver of a cooked shellfish (oftentimes a lobster).  It has a soft green color and, according to Cook’s Illustrated, is valued for its creamy texture and intense flavor.  It’s typically used in sauces or in compound butter.  I was surprised to discover that some people believe it's not safe to eat.  This is due to the fact that tomalley ingestion can sometimes lead to the contraction of “paralytic shellfish poisoning”, but evidently it’s mainly a risk during red tides.  Ignis likes to live on the wild side!  In the JP version, the dish references “kani miso’ which loosely translates to “crab brain”.  The “kani miso” however refers to the same thing tomalley does (a green paste of innards).  Maybe it feels better say you are eating a crab brain instead of a mish mash of its organs?  In any case, it’s also considered a delicacy in Japan.
Tumblr media
I think this dish further confirms that Ignis has a refined palate and a taste for expensive seafood.  Someone who frequently eats lobster could very easily develop a taste for the rarer bits of that celebrated crustacean.  Noctis even jokes that Ignis should be thrilled when they fight giant crabs with bone crushing pincers (but Ignis replies “what they have gained in size they will have lost in flavor”).  Apparently Ignis has a shellfish reputation.
Tumblr media
To unlock the Tomalley-Filled Dumplings, you have to read Oric’s Culinary Chronicles, entry 5 (which is sitting on a bench near the bridge in Old Lestallum).  It makes sense a story about a “river crawler” would lead to a recipe involving tomalley.  What else can we infer from this?  I’m not sure we can really connect the entry to Ignis (or Old Lestallum).  That said, there was once a theory Ignis was related to Oric, but that will have to wait for another post.
6. Feast of the Divine
Next to Kenny’s Original Recipe, this is the strangest item on Ignis’ list.  This dish is prepared by Gentiana in the Comrades DLC (before Comrades became a standalone you could only acquire te recipe after she made it).  Noctis’ favorite Comrades dish is prepared by Cid, Prompto's is made by Cindy and Gladio’s is prepared by Cor.  Many speculated that Ignis’ fave would be Aranea’s, but not many guessed it would be Gentiana’s.
Tumblr media
Genti’s dish is complex and beautiful to look at.  It features extremely expensive ingredients and gives good buffs.  Does Ignis love this dish simply because it is the most sophisticated?  The best tasting?  The most beautiful?  Any of those could be good answers., but if you break out the tinfoil you can go further.  Does Ignis love Gentiana’s dish because he knows her well?  Is Ignis himself some type of astral?  Or a messenger?
Tumblr media
Very far fetched, but since we have very limited background info on Ignis it’s tempting to invent theories to explain his past.
7. Kenny’s Original Recipe
Tumblr media
This one is hard to reconcile.  How could a man of such culinary sophistication love something like this??  I’m not even sure what it actually is. It is clearly a salmon fillet, but it’s not clear what is covering it.  Some believe that it’s pastry, others think that it might be a cheese topping like some sort of cursed tuna melt.  Personally, I think it looks like mozzarella cheese.  I did come across a bizarre thing at Japanese KFCs--deep fried salmon bites.  That might be similar to Kenny’s.
Tumblr media
You might think this is just something that Ignis settles for when the bros go to the Crow’s Nest--a sort of adaptation to cope with their many visits to Kenny’s place.  This would seem like a good explanation, but he doesn't just tolerate it--he loves it!  The little sprite Ignis leaps for joy when you select it.  It almost seems hypocritical after Ignis’ snarky remark to Prompto implying Crow’s Nest fare was unhealthy and fattening.
It’s possible the dish holds some special place in Ignis’ heart.  It seems like the Crow’s Nest chain is only outside the walls of Insomnia, but it’s possible a Crow’s Nest or two made it into the city.  Maybe Kenny’s Original Recipe reminds Ignis of some fond moments from his childhood.  Maybe it was a dish someone from his family really loved.  Maybe he saw an ad for it when he was small and always wanted to try it.  Maybe his inner Guy Fieri is coming out.  Maybe Kenny intimidated him into liking the dish.
Tumblr media
Who knows, but the fact that Ignis loves this is just one more of the many mysteries about Ignis.
Taken together, these dishes reveal a man who has sophisticated, yet not elitist tastes.  A man who appreciates fine dining and the comfort of a home cooked meal.  Most importantly, we know that he appreciates a good cake.  I hope you get to have all of your favorites today, Ignis.  🎈Happy birthday!! 🎈

Can we see some interactions between Chev and the creeps?
((FINALLY I HAVE AN EXCUSE TO DRAW THIS LETS GOOOOO))
Tumblr media
Toby's been my best friend for years, and our favorite thing to do is shit talk about anything and everything. You can usually find us hanging out at the mansion, either in our rooms or out on the porch.
Tumblr media
Jack and I became best friends more recently! We usually either just hang around each other and do our own thing (parallel play, I think it's called??), or doing something active like walking or cooking while we talk. We sometimes hunt together too! I'm not really a fan of killing people, but I gotta eat human flesh a few times a month. and having Jack with me while I do it is a bit comforting, I guess??
Tumblr media
Jeff and I are frenemies. He's a stinky greasy man and bothers the fuck out of me. Dude will literally just walk into my house or my room in the mansion and just bug me. (Toby and Jack do this too, but they have bestie privileges.) He's really cool sometimes though.
Tumblr media
Nina is an absolute sweetheart!! I love this girl, and we're starting to get closer as friends. We shop together, do skincare together (sometimes Toby joins bc he's part of the girls who get it), go to shows, and talk about fandom stuff A LOT. we also share fanfic and tiktok thirst trap edits on the reg
If you want to know how I interact with any specific creeps, let me know in my inbox!

WHAT TO WATCH THIS WEEKEND September 20, 2019  - VILLAINS, BLOODLINE, DOWNTON ABBEY, AD ASTRA, RAMBO: LAST BLOOD
It’s hard to believe that September is almost over, and we’re just sailing through the September festival season with the New York Film Festival starting (for real) next week.  There are three wide releases, but I will only have seen one of them before writing this, so instead, I’ll talk about a couple genre movies opening Friday, both of which played at Lincoln Center’s “Scary Movies XII” last month.
Tumblr media
I remember writing quite extensively about VILLAINS (Alter/Gunpowder and Sky) when I was over at the Tracking Board, mainly about the casting of Bill Skarsgard from It, Maika Monroe from It Follows, as well as Jeffrey Donovan and Kyra Sedgwick. It’s the new movie from Dan Berk and Robert Olsen, who directed the horror sequel The Stakelander and have written a pretty amazing comedy-thriller twist on the home invasion movie. Skarsgard and Monroe play a young couple who hide out in a seemingly abandoned house after robbing a store. They soon learn that not only is it not abandoned, but there is a young girl chained in the basement. The owners of the home, played by Kyra Sedgwick and Jeffrey Donovan, then return and things go sideways for the young couple as they find that maybe their petty crimes make them the good guys in this scenario.  Villains is getting a fairly hearty release into roughly 100 theaters across the country, so check your listings to see if/where it will be playing near you. (It mainly seems to be playing in Regal theaters across the country.)
Tumblr media
Another interesting genre film opening Friday is Henry Jacobson’s psychological thriller BLOODLINE (Momentum Pictures), starring Seann William Scott as Evan, a high school social worker with a secret – he’s also a serial killer who tries to help his patients by ridding them of their issues. Evan is also experiencing a new baby with his wife, which might keep him from his killing habits, except that his mother (Dale Dickey) has shown up to help them, and she was the one who taught him his ways. This is a really dark and gory film that I quite enjoyed in a similar way as some of my favorite serial killer thrillers, from Hitchcock’s Psychoto Henry, Portrait of a Serial Killer and others. It honestly can’t be a better time for this with all the true crime television we’re getting, and I was pretty blown away by Scott’s performance in this. Bloodlineisplaying at the IFC Center for Friday and Saturday late night screenings and probably will be available On Demand as well.
You can read my interview with Seann William Scott and the directors of VILLAINS over at The Beat, the latter posting Friday.
Tumblr media
The one wide release I have seen this weekend is Focus Features’ DOWNTOWN ABBEY, a continuation of the PBS series with an absolutely amazing British cast that includes Dame Maggie Smith, Penelope Wilton and so many more that I won’t name all of them. I feel that I’m not the best person to properly review the movie since I haven’t seen a second of the series, but I generally liked what I saw and might give it a look if I can find a good streaming source on which to binge it. I actually liked the movie enough to recommend it without having any previous knowledge of the series.
Probably my biggest disappointment of this week is that I didn’t have a chance to see James Gray’s AD ASTRA (20thCentury Fox), starring Brad Pitt, before Thursday night, because I wasn’t able to get to the press screening. It’s been one of my more anticipated movies of the year, mainly because I generally love outer space movies, but I also have been interested in seeing what Gray and Pitt do with the material, especially with such a great supporting cast.
Another movie that I only got to see just before this column posts is Sylvester Stallone’s RAMBO: LAST BLOOD (Lionsgate), which I reviewed over at The Beat. I had very few expectations for the movie, as I’ve never been a huge Rambo fan. I’m not sure why, but I guess I just never got into the Rah! Rah! USA! Stuff that permeated the United States in the ‘80s, and I was more into music than movies at the time. Reading my review, it’s obvious that Stallone’s latest attempt to revive a franchise didn’t do much for me.
You can read what I think of the above’s box office prospects over at The Beat, as well.
LIMITED RELEASES
I’m not quite sure why there are so many limited releases this weekend –I count almost 30 (!!!!) over on Rotten Tomatoes– but I’ll see what I can get to this week since I’m already a little behind. If you missed, Rob Zombie’s 3 FROM HELL on Monday and Tuesday night and more importantly, missed my scathing review of it over at The Beat, well, then you’ve missed it since this column is posting after it played its last night before its blu-ray release next month. Sorry!
Tumblr media
A fantastic documentary opening at the Metrograph this week is Jacqueline Olive’s directorial debut ALWAYS IN SEASON (Multitude Films), a stirring film about the history of lynching, circling around the death of 17-year-old Lennon Lacy from Bladenboro, North Carolina, which is ruled as a suicide but his mother Claudia is convince that her son was lynched. Olive’s powerful film provides a background for how lynching became so prevalent in the early part of the 20thCentury, including an eerie annual reenactment by the town of Monroe, Georgia that wants to make sure that the county’s atrocities aren’t forgiven or forgotten.  Narrated by Danny Glover, Olive’s directorial debut is powerful and moving and a film that must not be missed – maybe it’s no surprise that it won a Special Jury prize at Sundance Film Festival for “Moral Urgency” earlier this year. I was pretty shaken up when I saw it at this year’s Oxford Film Festival.
The Metrograph is also screening two National Geographic shorts, Alexander A. Mora’s The Night Crawlers and Orlando von Einsiedel’sLost and Found, over the next week. The Night Crawlers looks at a group of Filipino journalists known as the “Manila Nightcrawlers” who seek to expose the truth about President Duterte’s war on drugs and the number of people who lost their lives over it. Lost and Foundi s a new doc short from the director of the Netflix doc The White Helmets which looks at the Myanmar’s ethnic violence against the Rohingya people through the eyes of a man in a refugee camp seeking to reunite children with parents.
Japanese animation house Studio TRIGGER’s first feature film PROMARE (GKIDS) will get a limited release on Friday, following Fathom Events showings on Tuesday (already passed) and Thursday (tonight). It will then be opening in New York at the Metrograph and AMC Empire on Friday for a one-week run. It’s an apocalyptic sci-fi thriller set in a world thirty years after a race of flame-wielding mutant beings called the Burnish set half the world on fire an the battle between the anti-Burnish Burning Rescue and Lio Fotia, leader of the aggressive new “Mad Burnish” mutants.
Paolo Sorrentino, director of the Oscar-winning The Great Beauty and its follow-up Youth, returns with LORO (Sundance Selects), about a young hustler named Sergio (Riccardo Scamarcio) managing an escort service who sets his sights on the egotistical billionaire Italian ex-Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi (Tony Servillo) who is trying to bribe his way back into power. It will open at the IFC Center Friday.
A couple other docs opening this weekend, the first two opening at New York’s Film Forum…
Now playing is Hassan Fazili’s Midnight Traveler (Oscilloscope) about how the filmmaker received death threats from the Taliban in 2015 for running Kabul, Afghanistan’s Art Café, a progressive meeting place, so he, his wife and two young daughters must travel 3,500 miles over 3 years across four countries to get to Hungary, a journey documented via mobile phone cameras. It will open in L.A. on October 4.
Then on Friday, there’s Matt Tyrnauer’s new film WHERE’S MY ROY COHN? (Sony Pictures Classics) looks at the lawyer and power broker who was part of Joe McCarthy’s anti-Communist activities and who was pivotal in molding a young Queens developer named Donald Trump. I wanted to like this movie more because Roy Cohn is such an interesting human being in such a despicable way, but this doc really didn’t do much for me.
Opening in New York (Cinema Village) and L.A. (Laemmle Glendale) is DIEGO MARADONA (HBO Sports), the new doc from Asif Kapadia (Amy, Senna), which will show on HBO on October 1. If you don’t know international football (or soccer), the Argentine Maradona is one of the most famous footballers of all time, a bit of a legend since signing to Naples in 1984 for a record-setting fee. I haven’t watched this yet but hope to soon.
Opening at New York’s IFC Center Friday is Max Powers’ Don’t Be Nice (Juno Films), focusing on the Bowery Slam Poetry Team as they head to the national championships, and there will be QnAs almost every night in its week-long run, and then it will open in L.A. on September 27.
Completely unrelated but also at the IFC Center is a full-week run of National Theatre Live: Fleabag, screening a pre-recorded performance of Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s one-woman show that inspired her hit Emmy-nominated show from the Soho Playhousein London’s West End. Heck, I might try to get to one of these since it won’t be on television or any other format for at least a year.
After opening for “one night only” on Tuesday, Louie (The Cove) Psihoyos’ new movie The Game Changers will get a release on New York this Friday and L.A. the 27th. Exec. produced by James Cameron, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jackie Chan, it explores the rise of plant-based eating in professional sports along with Special Forces trainer James Wilks and features segments on Schwarzenegger, Formula One racer Lewis Hamilton, tennis player Novak Djokovic and NBA star Chris Paul.
Demi Moore, Ed Helms, Karan Soni (from the “Deadpool” movies) and Jessica Williams star in the horror-comedy Corporate Animals (Screen Media), the new comedy from Patrick Brice (Creep, The Overnight) about a corporate team-building adventure that turns to cannibalism when an office group find themselves trapped in a cave system. The movie has a great cast but the strange concept and weak screenplay really keeps the movie from delivering.
Other movies out this weekend include James Franco’s Zeroville (MyCinema), co-starring Megan Fox and Seth Rogen; Nicolas Cage’s new movie Running with the Devil (Quiver DIstribution), a drug thriller co-starring Laurence Fishburne, Barry Pepper, Leslie Bibb and more; and the award-winning Chinese drama Send Me to the Clouds (Cheng Cheng Films), opening in L.A., NY, Toronto and Vancouver.
STREAMING AND CABLE
Maybe the movie I’m most excited for this week is Zak Galifianakis’ BETWEEN TWO FERNS: THE MOVIE (Netflix), which I’m sure is going to be silly, maybe even stupid, but I’m still amused by his style of humor. I also haven’t seen the new Netflix doc Inside Bill’s Brain: Decoding Bill Gates, and I also no absolutely nothing about the movie other than what’s in the title.

Project Rebuild Chapter 11
EXT. NINJAGO CITY DOCKS - DAY
Lord Garmadon is defeated. His Shark Mech is a broken and smoking heap. Garmadon coughs as the smoke clears. He tries pressing buttons and pulling levers in his control panel but nothing works. The Shark Mech does not respond but it’s shields are still up and activated.
GARMADON: (cough) Jeez, where did that come from? I did not see that coming. (cough) Your missiles are very accurate, Green Ninja. Too bad for you, I upgraded all of my shields! (to himself) That's all I seem to have at the moment, just some upgraded shields.
Lloyd speaks with a forceful and bitter edge to his voice.
LLOYD: Face it, Garmadon. You will never take over Ninjago, so why don't you just give up and go away for good?
Garmadon lets out an exasperated sigh.
GARMADON: Look, it’s been a really rough day for me. I’ve had to face my disappointment of a son...
Lloyd visibly flinches at this.
GARMADON: You’ve foiled my plan to conquer Ninjago. And now you’ve trashed my Shark Mech.
Lloyd’s patience is wearing thin.
LLOYD: (SHOUTING) WILL YOU JUST LEAVE ALREADY?
GARMADON: Okay, okay.
Garmadon raises his arms in mock surrender.
GARMADON: But mark my words! One day, I will conquer Ninjago! Maybe not today but just you wait, Green Ninja!
Lloyd seethes in anger and lets the words slip.
LLOYD: Oh I’ll be waiting… Dad.
We go to a quick split screen shot reaction of all the other Ninja widening their eyes in realization. But they don’t say anything.
GARMADON: Sorry, what? What was that last thing you said?
Garmadon leans over towards Lloyd.
LLOYD: What?
Lloyd is defensive.
GARMADON: That last part, I didn’t catch it.
Lloyd feels trapped. He rambles very quickly and instinctively lashes out in frustration.
LLOYD: Whuh uh uh? I didn’t say anything. What do you mean? I said I’ll be waiting and then I stopped talking…
Lloyd’s voice then takes on a deliberately bitter and sarcastic edge.
LLOYD: Dad.
Lloyd takes off his mask in defiance. He has had enough of hiding. He is furious.
We quickly go back to the split screen shot reaction of all the other Ninja.
ALL THE NINJA: GASP!
GARMADON: Luh-loyd?
Lloyd reveals himself as the Green Ninja.
LLOYD: That’s right! I’m your son! The one you almost killed today!
Garmadon is momentarily stunned. His mind is blown.
GARMADON: Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa….. ????
Garmadon continues saying this in the background while the ninja are interacting.
We go back to the split screen shot. All the Ninja except Zane facepalm.
ZANE: Do not worry. My sensors detect no other life signs within hearing range.
OTHER NINJA: Phew!
ZANE: Oh wait, there’s one.
Zane points in a certain direction.
We zoom in on a close up shot of General # 7 to reveal she did not actually leave Garmadon but instead was camouflaged in place this whole time.
GENERAL # 7: What? Uhh, I heard nothing!
KAI: Got it!
Kai uses the Fire Mech to shoot a stream of fire at the Octopus Lady General # 7.
General # 7 jumps out of the Crab Crawler and runs around screaming while on fire. She then finally drops on the ground and rolls around before dying with X marks on her eyes.
ZANE: Takoyaki anyone?
COLE: Mmmm… cannibalism…
GARMADON (CONT’D): Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa…..
LLOYD: (SHOUTING) GARMADON!
We go to a close up of Garmadon as he snaps out of his stunned trance-like state as though nothing had happened.
GARMADON: Anyway where were we?
Garmadon and Lloyd talk at the same time. Whenever Lloyd tries to say something, Garmadon doesn’t acknowledge it and keeps talking over his son.
LLOYD: Dad…
GARMADON: Ahhh, whaaaaatt?
LLOYD: Dad, please!
GARMADON: My own son is the Green Ninja?
LLOYD: Listen to me!
GARMADON: How could this have happened? You were supposed to be the Chosen One and rule Ninjago by my side as father and son!
In response, Lloyd angrily slams down on the “Happy Birthday to Me!” button again. The Green Dragon Mech begins to shoot out missiles.
NINJA COMPUTER: Right claw missile. Left claw missile...
The same sequence of the missiles deploying plays out but now instead of focusing on the missiles, we see the baffled expressions of the other ninja. Their mechs shift around uneasily. The Quake Mech leans on the Ice Tank.
Explosion noises and Garmadon’s screams can be heard off screen.
After the explosions end, the smoke clears and this time, Lloyd is downright furious! He is breathing heavily. But Garmadon remains unharmed inside his shield bubble.
LLOYD: You’re always cutting me off! Always interrupting me! You never listen! Well, are you listening now, Dad? Do I have your attention?
Lloyd asserts his dominance while Garmadon speaks in a more submissive voice.
GARMADON: Oh I read you loud and clear, Luh-loyd.
LLOYD: I am not your Chosen One and I will never rule Ninjago by your side! I will never be like you, Garmadon! NEVER!
As Lloyd says this, the red in his eyes flashes very briefly and Garmadon sees this. Garmadon smiles and composes himself. He echoes his son’s words.
GARMADON: So be it. But if you ever find your inner darkness, then I’ll be waiting.
A couple of Flying Jelly Subs hover over the Shark Mech and attach their chain tentacles to it. They begin to lift it away.
Garmadon signals the Flying Jelly Subs and they turn to leave. But before they get very far, Lloyd shouts a final insult.
LLOYD: I wish you weren’t my father!
Garmadon pauses for a beat then signals the Jelly Subs to turn back and face Lloyd.
GARMADON: Then consider yourself henceforth unworthy of the name of Garmadon. From this moment on, I have no son.
Garmadon says each word clearly and carefully to cause as much calculated inner turmoil as possible.
Lloyd has a look of absolute hurt. All the other Ninja are shocked.
But Cole then narrows his eyes and pilots the Quake Mech over to Garmadon’s Shark Mech. The Quake Mech grabs Garmadon’s Shark Mech by the tail and yanks it away from the Jelly Subs.
GARMADON: Uh-oh!
With the lower torso wheel stable on the ground, the Quake Mech’s upper torso spins around, winds up for the pitch and hurls Garmadon’s Shark Mech far into the ocean.
The thugs in the Jelly Subs panic and quickly maneuver their Jelly Subs to chase after Garmadon.
The Quake Mech turns back to Lloyd.
COLE: Don’t listen to him, Lloyd. He doesn’t deserve you.
LLOYD: Thanks Cole!
Cole’s pupils widen to indicate he is touched and on the verge of happy tears at being thanked by Lloyd. But then, he does a double take after he realizes Lloyd may have accidentally revealed his secret identity
as well. Lloyd does not seem aware of this.
LLOYD: Well, that's our cue.
Lloyd presses a button on the control panel and the Green Dragon Mech releases a green flare from its mouth which makes a piercing noise. The green flare remains hovering in the air. This is the ALL CLEAR
signal.
EXT. THE BRIDGE - DAY
At The Bridge, the residents slowly come out of the Blast Shelter. Lil’ Nelson can be seen among them.
EXT. NINJAGO CITY - DAY
Throughout Ninjago City, the citizens begin to come out of their hiding places.
CITIZEN # 1: Ah, my ears have finally stopped ringing from all those explosions. I hope I didn’t miss anything.
CITIZEN # 2: What do we do now?
Suddenly, Lou of the Royal Blacksmiths singing group slides in. He picks up a Lego brick and starts singing diegetically to the tune of “We Built This City” by Starship, but with slightly altered lyrics.
[SONG: “We Built This City” by Starship - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KfcAgnygeBI ]
LOU: We’ll rebuild this city! Rebuild this city on rock and roll!
The other members of the Royal Blacksmiths slide in and sing along.
ROYAL BLACKSMITHS: Rebuild this city! Rebuild this city on rock and roll!
All the Ninjago citizens break out in a spontaneous but seemingly-choreographed dance number. Like clockwork, they start rebuilding the ruins of Ninjago City. Everyone moves in synchronization to the beat of the song.
EXT. NINJAGO CITY DOCKS - DAY
The music continues playing but it is slightly muted.
NINJAGO CITIZENS: Say you don’t know me, or recognize my face...
All the ninja are restless and uneasy. They should be celebrating a victory but instead, they all look like they want to say something about Lloyd revealing himself in public.
Lloyd shrugs off their uneasiness. He is not in the mood right now.
LLOYD: We can talk about this later.
Lloyd pilots the Green Dragon Mech to fly off. The other Mechs reluctantly follow in silence.

What You Must Understand about Cranes
These are sturdy makers typically equipped with suspended cables or strong ropes. The cable televisions are utilized to raise or lower heavy things that are impossible to carry manually. Cranes are available in convenient in various commercial requirements such as motion picture production, machine fabrication, oil mining, structure, and maintenance of buildings. The global requirement for moving and hoisting heavy objects and products has actually caused the invention of various types of cranes. Some are installed on trucks, we have spiders and all-terrain ones.
Trucks are easier in moving cranes to various places. These devices are commonly utilized in the building of bridges and structures. The crawlers are very stable and can move very heavy things. They can work at any given work environment. However, they need to be dismantled so as to be carried. Spiders are extremely expensive due to the fact that they are extremely heavy and resilient. All-terrain vehicles are ideal for both commercial tasks and road building and construction. They are not limited to utilize public roads. Folk lifts are a fine example of all-terrain devices; they have a load capability of 1200tons.
Crane spare parts
When searching to purchase a crane, it is great to do good previous research. A few of the details you require to consider are; where you are going to use it, the rate of the device, and the availability of its spare parts.
With good working place surface, the maker is not prone to lots of mechanical problems. Meanwhile, know the price, compare different makers' brochures and even call up their sales agents.
Awaiting manufacturer service technicians to fix your crane is pricey and time-consuming. The perfect thing to do is to buy authentic and independent spare parts. Discovering the crane parts from vendors is likewise simple and quick than getting the maker. Some of the most common spare parts in the market are; motors, equipments, wheels, gearboxes, speed controls, drums, driveshafts, wire ropes and cable televisions, brake pads, and numerous other parts.
Regular crane upkeep and change of parts enhance its performance and sturdiness. Some of the spare parts can be quickly changed by the owner. All you need is the best mechanical tool and a handbook if required. In case of a mechanical crisis, it is suggested for you to call the producers.
Crane Safety Training
These heavy machines have the capacity for devastating mishaps. One needs to be ready to buy security training prior to operating it. Some of the typical reasons for accidents are:
- Accidental drops occur when there are problems between the angle of load and ground. To prevent it, try and keep it under 10% or 0% if possible. An angle above 10% can make the load slip and trigger an unexpected drop.
- Consider shape and temperature when selecting a sling size. A sling is used to bring heavy loads. If the load slips from the sling it can be dangerous. Wire slings are preferred due to their flexibility and strength. Some are made of metal mesh, chain, or even synthetic materials.
- Wearing protective gear and regular safety checks on the maker parts would decrease lots of accidents.
- Use professional crane operators to prevent accidents. It is proper to check if they have proper files to reveal that they can operate the machine. 90% of crane mishaps are caused by human error or even unqualified operators.

Linking Ocean Observation and Fisheries - Relevance to Deep Ocean Living Resources- Juniper Publishers
Abstract
Systematic ocean observation for real time data collection during the last three decades, development of sensors and tools, and ocean modelling have paved the way for better understanding of the ocean processes and better prediction of coastal hazards like cyclones, tsunami, storm surge, etc., leading to direct societal benefits globally. In particular global ARGO float data have brought in remarkable changes in ocean science studies. This paper discusses about the growing need to link ocean observation to fisheries and futuristic approach about deep ocean marine living resources
Go to
Introduction
The goal of fisheries oceanography is to understand the oceanographic and ecological processes that affect fishery abundance, distribution, and availability and then apply this understanding to improve fisheries assessment and management. Ecophysiology is the interrelationship between the environment and an organism's physiology [1]. The future of fisheries oceanography lies in the pursuit of multiple hypotheses [2]. Using temperature as an example, a range of biological processes are related to temperature either directly or indirectly [3]. All organisms have thermal limits above and below which death is rapid. Within these limits, temperature controls a number of rate processes, including gene expression, enzyme kinetics, metabolism, activity, consumption, and growth. Organisms also respond behaviourally to temperature through migration, foraging, and resting.
Looking ahead, the core question is whether today's agriculture and food systems are capable of meeting the needs of a global population that is projected to reach more than 9 billion by mid-century and may peak at more than 11 billion by the end of the century [4]. Human activities have profound, possibility irreversible impacts on ocean health, in terms of physical state (warming, freshing, and circulation changes), its biogeochemistry (carbon uptake and acidification) and its ecosystem. The ocean influences climate by storing and transporting large amounts of heat, freshwater, and carbon, and by exchanging these properties with the atmosphere. Ocean warming dominates the global energy change inventory with warming of the upper (0 to 700m) ocean accounting for about 64% of the total. However, below 700m ocean depth, data coverage is too sparse to produce annual global ocean heat content.

Deep Ocean Policy, Strategy and Capacity Building
The deep ocean is the single largest ecosystem on our planet. It sustains a great variety of habitats and life forms and is host to potentially valuable resources such as minerals, oil and gas and more traditionally food. Harnessing the full potential of deep ocean resources, whilst mitigating and managing environmental impacts, requires in-depth knowledge and understanding of the complexities of deep sea ecosystem and interconnection of the physical environment and the life forms within it [5].
Deep Ocean is yet to be understood and answered in the context of the role of deep ocean processes and various science questions pertaining to Earth's energy imbalance, heat budget, fluxes, and deep ocean mixing, on climate change. Industrial activities on deep sea mining, bottom trawling and oil and gas extraction need detailed study of the biogeochemical processes and impact assessment, which require systematic ocean data collection. Available reports indicate that inertial-period oscillations have been observed by numerous investigators in deep sea locations ranging from subtropical to polar latitudes [6].
Innovative technologies are a key to study ocean processes in space and time. Today's underwater exploration is supported by vessels operated by a number of skilled crew members, and underwater robots controlled from the vessel. These underwater technologies have been utilised widely by the private sector. Different robotic platforms like benthic landers, crawler, floats, glider, Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV), Unmanned Airborne Vehicles (UAVs) and sensor systems are required for deep sea studies. The use of these new underwater technologies will enhance our capabilities in improving our knowledge on the effects of climate change and ocean observation [7,8].
The deep ocean is our planet's largest biome, and is under increasing pressure from human activities such as resource exploitation and pollution. The 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) declared the seabed area beyond national jurisdiction (the Area) and its mineral resources as the "common heritage of mankind", to be administered for the benefit of mankind as a whole. All mineral exploration and exploitation activities must be sponsored by the Party to UNCLOS and approved by the International Seabed Authority (the Authority). The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) report states "it is important that policies guiding mineral extraction from the deep seas are rooted into adaptive management-allowing for the integration of new scientific information alongside advances in technology. Governance mechanisms for international waters and the seabed need to be strengthened". Hence there is also an unprecedented need to integrate the deep ocean into ocean science and policy. New international regulations (e.g, for mining) and treaties (e.g. for biodiversity), environmental management, and spatial planning also must incorporate climate and the role of deep processes.
New knowledge is critical to climate predictions and societal impact assessments and will require the expansion of deep-water research with experimental capacities, to support the design of marine protected areas encompassing vulnerable regions in deep waters, and to inform environmental management of industrial activities and development of new policies addressing deep national and international waters.
Outreach events on advances in ocean science and technology and their role in judicious and sustainable exploitation and use of the vast resources should target groups of people including schoolchildren, people and local communities and by contributing interactive exhibits and displays for curious visitors of all ages. They can contribute directly to the country’s prosperity, benefit humanity, and many non-scientists who have little knowledge of these important issues. The public awareness of science by communicating their work widely, whether it involves explaining climate change, and/or investigating life at the bottom of the world's deepest oceans, will go a long way in knowledge enhancement among the entire cross section of the society.
The deep sea is out of sight, out of mind, and because there is no specific human society that is directly impacted by the negative consequences of extraction, it is challenging to focus attention on environmental issues of deep-ocean industrialization, including commercialisation of deep sea fisheries. It is imperative to work with industry and governance institutions to put in place progressively strong environmental regulations, even at the planning stage of the industry itself. There is a need for international agreements and multiple sources of research funding that can help provide the scientific information to protect and manage the deep sea environment and its resources. All these will require efforts that bridge several disciplines and engage different stakeholders in these tasks.
Go to
Role of Oceanography in Sustainable Fisheries Management
Often fisheries stock assessment and management has been questioned for failing to account for oceanographic processes. It is clear from the abundant research that fisheries scientists and managers are well aware of the role that oceanographic processes play in controlling fish populations. Debate about the relative roles of fisheries versus the ocean conditions / environment in determining the abundance of fish stocks has persisted for decades. There are numerous examples of academic exercises developing methods to identify relationships between population dynamics and oceanography, to integrate oceanographic data into stock assessment and management, and to evaluate the advantages of using oceanographic data, but there is a lack of successfully implemented examples in the real terms.
Recently, the methodology adopted by USA and Australia have shown success. NOAA Fisheries oceanography program is more than 100 years old and has successfully developed methods for annual outlooks with emphasison the long-term sustainability of fish stocks. Linking ocean conditions to salmon returns using plankton species, SST and DO revealed important changes in the marine food chain and offshore ecosystem and their "red light-green light" chart has become popular among fishing industry.
Periodic research articles by Oceanographers along the Indian east and west coasts have showed the linkage of Phytoplankton survey, Oxygen Minimum Zone and Upwelling in Arabian Sea, fronts meandering in Bay of Bengal which are linked to fishing, and impact of coastal/ocean pollution to fisheries. The availability of fine spatial and temporal scale oceanographic data from remote sensing and ocean observation system like moored buoys, ARGO floats, etc., ship borne measurements, and oceanographic models allow research on more appropriate scales, which may lead to improvements in the near future, leading to better understanding of the interaction between the ocean parameters and the deep sea fisheries resources.
Unfortunately, the understanding of the mechanisms involved, the available data, or the large scale correlations are limited. In most cases, statistically significant correlations between population dynamics and population processes break down are yet to be established. This has led to advocating direct monitoring or developing management strategies that are robust to the variation rather than determining the relationships between population dynamics and oceanographic processes. The few successfully implemented examples mainly relate to predicting the spatial distribution of a fish stock. Therefore, use of oceanographic data to determine dynamic spatial closures to reduce by catch appears to be one of the most promising areas of research.

Indian Context
Of late, in India our enhanced observing and modelling capacity is providing new opportunities to improve fisheries management at both short (e.g., weekly) and long (e.g., climatic) time scales. Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) Hyderabad under the Ministry of Earth Sciences develops Potential Fishery Zones (PFZs) advisories and issues them to the coastal fishing community through various media. INCOIS uses satellite measurements of sea surface temperature (SST) and chlorophyll generated from OCEANSAT to develop these PFZ advisories, which consist essentially of curves drawn on a map to delineate the Potential Fishing Zones. Judging by download statistics and the feedback available, the product is popular with the fishing community within India as well as in this region.
In India, there is no industrial fishing fleet operating within the EEZ. Out of 199,141 fishing craft which are presently operating in the Indian seas, non-motorised and motorized traditional fishing crafts constitute 63.41% (126,392), with the remaining 72,749 (36.59%) being the mechanised fishing boats including trawlers. Traditional fishing crafts do day fishing in east coast up to 3 to 5 NM and west coast up to 7nm. The motorized fishing crafts (fitted with Outboard motors of 10-15 HP) do fishing up to a maximum of 70-100m depth. The mechanised fishing craft including trawlers which are less than 20m Overall length (OAL) operate as either day fishing boats or multi-day fishing boats depending on their OAL and the horse power of the inboard engine and do fishing for 7-15 days in the open sea depending on their endurance. These fishing crafts are landing on an average 3.10 million metric tonnes per annum during 20042014, against the projected Maximum Sustainable Yield levels of around 4.5 million m.t. This is in spite of the fact that there had been an increase both in terms of the fishing effort in the form of increase in fishing craft and the fisher population. The existing satellite based technique often does not work close to land and hence there is a need to evolve an unique methodology supported by primary field level data on productivity, coastal ocean monitoring data and fisheries data, which could be integrated and used to supplement the sea surface temperature derived from satellite imageries and other physical and chemical oceanographic data collected from moored and floating buoys for providing information on potential fishing zones along the coastal belt within 5-10nm zone for the benefit of fishers who do fishing using traditional sail powered and motorized fishing boats.
In India pioneering work carried out in the Arabian Sea by the Indian researchers has provided a lot of opportunities for correlating the oceanographic parameters with fisheries resource abundance beyond 100-200m depth zone within the Indian Exclusive Economic Zone and areas beyond national jurisdiction. The data and information collected so far from these studies will be very useful in furthering our studies in the Bay of Bengal and parts of the Indian Ocean abutting the southern tip of the country and the Andaman and Lakshadweep areas. It is proposed to involve all the relevant Government organizations and stakeholders to make a realistic assessment of the deep sea fisheries resources/fish stock assessment and management in correlation with the oceanographic parameters.

Issues to be Addressed in Fisheries Oceanography
I. Why do we get a certain fish in a certain region?
II. Why is the fishery pattern changing ?
III. Forcing in shelf has any influence.
IV. Early fish life history to integrate with river run off nutrients which trigger fish to bread mostly after monsoon.
Go to
National Fisheries Outlook
There is a need to involve national outlook on fisheries and to support ecosystem based fisheries management following the example of NOAA's Fisheries oceanography program on ocean conditions to salmon returns using plankton species, SST and DO, Although traditional single-species management continues to use spawning stock biomass as the primary indicator for recruitment, recent research is being addressed on the early life history of fishes (Figure 1).

Summary
There is growing demand from funding agencies and public on the sustained fishing practices and relevance of Oceanographic scientific finding to support the society in particular the fishing community / Industry. When a fisherman sets out to sea, he confronts a vast expanse of water and the vagaries of nature. There exist no roads to follow, no tracks to lead him to the fish, which too are not to be found all over the ocean. Fish, being migratory in nature, either tend to congregate in certain regions, or are always in motion and hence it is important for the fishermen to locate them in order that their fishing effort serves its purpose. By seeking to elucidate mechanistic relationships between fish species and their surrounding oceanic habitats, the field of fisheries oceanography will aim to provide a solid understanding of fish behaviour, population dynamics, and life history with an ecosystem perspective. In future similar weather forecasting. Science would improve to focus on prediction or forecast for fishing using a different data sets available.

Methods to Stop Redirect Chains from Destroying Your search engine optimization
New Post has been published on http://tiptopreview.com/how-to-prevent-redirect-chains-from-destroying-your-seo/
Methods to Stop Redirect Chains from Destroying Your search engine optimization
Tumblr media
Have a web site? Then you definitely’ve seemingly heard about search engine optimization (search engine optimization) — the method of creating your web site simpler to seek out, crawl, and rank for search engines.
The higher your search engine optimization, the upper your web site finally ends up on search engine rating pages (SERPs) — because of this, the higher the prospect of your web site being observed by potential prospects.
And with 68% of all website traffic coming from natural and paid searches — reasonably than via social media shares and different marketing channels — the suitable search engine optimization technique is crucial.
Tumblr media
Many search engine optimization strategies are simple: Don’t key phrase stuff. Preserve your content material related. Enhance your web site’s person expertise (UX) by chopping complexity and boosting velocity. However different metrics additionally matter.
Living proof? Redirect chains. These interconnected Web points trigger issues for search engine spiders, frustration for customers, and potential issues in your web page rating.
However what precisely is a redirect chain? Why is it probably problematic? And how do you discover and remove these unintentional web site course corrections? Right here’s what that you must know.
Learn about what web optimization is and how to do it with this free course.
What’s a redirect chain?
A redirect chain happens when there’s multiple redirect between the preliminary hyperlink customers click on on and the eventual vacation spot web page.
There are two frequent sorts of redirects: 301 and 302.
301 redirects happen when the destination page permanently links to a new URL and 302 redirects point to temporary pages while new content is created or websites are built. From an SEO perspective, both are treated the same.
Consider a backlink from a reputable site that leads to a page on your site, which we’ll call URL A. If users click on the link and are taken directly to URL A, it’s considered to be a single 301 redirect. Perfect.
But what happens if the content on URL A needs a refresh? You update the content with URL B, then set URL A to redirect users to the new page. This causes a redirect chain — your backlink leads to URL A which redirects to URL B. Add new pages and the chain gets longer and longer, and longer…
Two Reasons for Redirects
In most cases, redirect chains are unintentional, and they typically happen for one of two reasons:
1. Content Updates
Since changing backlinks on other sides isn’t easy — you’d need to get in contact with the site owner, ask them to amend the link, and hope they have the time to do so — it’s often quicker to simply redirect the initial backlink to a new URL. As websites grow and content changes, however, the number of steps between the initial click and eventual destination can increase dramatically.
2. URL Specifics
Redirect chains also occur when businesses rapidly scale up their website and small issues with URL specifics turn into larger redirect problems. For instance, consider the URL:
http://www.yoursite.com/products
Since it lacks the https now expected for secure website browsing, you update the URL to:
https://www.yoursite.com/products
This creates a redirect, but there’s another issue — no trailing slash after “products”. So what happens? You amend the URL again:
https://www.yoursite.com/products/
The result? You’ve gone from one to three redirects with only minor changes. Combined with new content generation and applied to your site at scale, it’s easy to see how redirects can quickly get out of hand.
The Negative SEO Impact of Redirect Chains
What’s the big problem with redirect chains, anyway? Since the links point users and search engine crawlers in the right direction, what does it matter if it takes a few extra steps?
As is turns out, large redirect chains can significantly impact your spot in SERPs for three reasons:
1. Link Juice Loss
The “boost” your site gets from reputable backlinks is often called “link juice” — the more juice you get, the better for your search rankings.
With just one redirect from a backlink to your site, you get 100% of the juice. Add another 301 redirect and you’re getting (on average) about 85% of the link juice. Add another and you get 85% of 85%, or just over 72%. The more links, the less juice.
2. Reduced Site Performance
It makes sense: The longer the chain, the more time it takes your destination page to load as browsers work their way through link after link. And with site performance now a critical factor in boosting SEO, more redirects mean lower rankings for your page.
3. Crawling Concerns
Search engine bots will only crawl so much before giving up. Called their “crawl budget”, most smaller websites don’t need to worry about search spiders spending their entire budget before reaching the end of the site — unless redirects start to ramp up.
The bigger and more numerous your redirect chains, the longer it takes for search engines to reach the end. Eventually, they’ll just stop looking.
Also worth mentioning are redirect loops. Here, initial links lead to URL A, then URL B and the URL C, and then back to URL A — causing a loop. Eventually, browsers stop redirecting and users end up with no content. Not surprisingly, your SEO suffers.
How to Find Redirect Chains
While you could go through your site manually and evaluate every page, every link, and every redirect, this is both time and resource-intensive — especially if you’re in the middle of site expansion or rolling out a new content strategy.
Best bet? Use online redirect checker tools to determine where your links are working as intended and where they create potentially problematic chains. Some popular solutions include:
1. Redirect-checker.org
Merely sort in your http:// or https:// URL to find any 301 or 302 redirects for a particular web page. This free device is nice should you’re solely frightened about particular URLs however isn’t best for checking your complete web site.
2. Sitebulb
Sitebulb delivers a number of stories that consider how crawl-friendly your web site is, the place redirect points exist, and the way hyperlinks are distributed throughout your web site. Sitebulb presents a 14-day free trial adopted by a month-to-month subscription mannequin.
three. Screaming Frog
The search engine optimization Spider from Screaming Frog helps you to discover damaged hyperlinks, audit hyperlink redirects, and uncover duplicate content material. search engine optimization Spider is available in each free and paid variations — the most important distinction is that the free model will solely crawl 500 URLs whereas the paid model presents limitless redirect stories.
four. DeepCrawl
DeepCrawl payments itself because the “world’s best website crawler” and presents three plans: Gentle, Gentle Plus, and Enterprise. The Gentle plan is designed for one challenge and 10,000 URLs per thirty days, whereas Gentle Plus presents 40,000 URLs, and Enterprise comes with limitless redirect reconnaissance.
Methods to Take away a Redirect Chain
When you’ve discovered redirect chains, eradicating them is easy — merely change the redirect hyperlink of the primary vacation spot web page to the ultimate URL reasonably than pointing it towards one other redirect.
In apply, this implies altering the redirect of URL A, in our instance above, to URL C reasonably than URL B — in flip, skipping the center step and making certain your web site doesn’t lose any hyperlink juice or search engine optimization rating. If URL B continues to be backlinked by different websites, you may go away its redirect to URL C intact. If it solely exists as a bridge between the older URL A and the newer URL C, it’s price eradicating redirects fully and deleting or archiving the web page.
Keep in mind — each 301 redirect after the preliminary soar prices your web site roughly 15% of potential hyperlink juice. Fill your SERP cup by chopping down redirects wherever attainable.
Methods to Stop Redirect Chains
To forestall redirect chains from build up over time, it’s price often checking your web site with redirect instruments like these talked about above. It’s additionally a good suggestion to maintain a document of recent URLs as they’re created — both through the use of a shared spreadsheet or by leveraging automated instruments for this objective — to assist make sure that new URLs are related to the primary 301 redirect reasonably than these additional down the chain.
Breaking Unhealthy (Chains)
Though it’s not attainable to completely keep away from redirect chains from backlinks and different dofollow sources, search engine optimization begins to endure the longer these chains develop into. Greatest wager? Use strong redirect instruments to seek out long-tail chains, break them into smaller items wherever attainable, and develop URL administration frameworks to cut back redirect dangers.

Chev's more demonic qualities for munday <3
close-ups + details under the cut! vvv
Tumblr media
Chev's usual go-to form when she's fighting. this is maybe about 75% of her demon form. she usually doesn't bring out her tail, but will use it for more range, or will use it to restrain someone like a snake constricting it's prey.
Tumblr media
here, Chev is coming down from a "feral" state. This can be caused by two things: not eating enough human meat (usually at least twice a month), or eating uncooked human meat. This can last up to 3 days.
Tumblr media
this is just to show off her teeth a little, and adding small things to her design! she mostly has straight hair now even though it's naturally curly (straightens it), made her eyes a little more saturated brown, and added a mole to her chin
Tumblr media
okay i kinda cheesed this one by drawing her silhouette instead of actually drawing her lmao. when she goes into a blind rage, her teeth grow long and thin kind of like an angler fish, and she has a second mouth right under her chin. It's unclear what it's purpose is (or if it even has one)
Tumblr media
she's just havin' a silly lil treat :3c she's an absolute FIEND for french fries. one time her coworkers brought her a whole fast food bag of fries just to see if she could eat the whole thing in one shift. She did.
