Some helpful vocabulary:

Blind caparisons were a thing, but blind chamfrons were also an option:

To my knowledge blind jousting was fashionable briefly in 16th century Germany. Sometimes they would also put bells around the horses' neck so the horse could not hear what was going on either.

Pinkie wearing one of those medieval/renaissance jousting outfits for horses, with the multihued cloth covering that also covers the eyes, and the armor for the face: "I can't see."

16th century German chamfron, commencing in earnest!
It took forever to do the patterning (you'd think I'd have less to do, seeing as I've made one of these before, but no, I was reinventing the wheel), but the rest of it should go a lot faster.
...Which is good, seeing as the client is flying me out to California this weekend to fit it to her horse in person. I feel like a Renaissance artist with a royal patron. 🤣

Horse's Chamfron from Hexham, England dated between the 1st and 2nd Centuries on display at Roman Vindolanda Fort and Museum in Hexham, England
This almost complete chamfron (a hourse's ceremonial face mask) was found amongst the remains of the Praetorium (residence of the Prefect) of Flavius Cerialis, the prefect of the 9th Cohort of Batavians. Many of the bronze fittings were removed in antiquity, presumably so that they could be fitted onto a replacement.

(deliberately)#the difference is the kg sigil has a crown in the middle and the spokes are swords. this pic's not high def enough to tell which one alas#wait nvm i just checked the other bts spy photos and that unicorn horn on the chamfron definitely has a 7-pointed star rondel. omg lol#anyway! we need more mlp art of the hotd characters. where is the fandom hello?#surely the fact that it is a decade since fim's heyday should not be stopping you#house of the dragon#asoiaf#criston cole#horses#horse armor#the faith of the seven#my little pony#cutie marks#lololol#queue and me we're in this together now

THE SEVEN CRIMES OF KULLERVO
On June 21, you’re invited to return to the mind-bending stage of Duviri for the next act in The Duviri Paradox… Prepare to uncover The Seven Crimes of Kullervo!
NEW WARFRAME: KULLERVO
Deep within the confines of a sprawling island dungeon, the tragic Warframe, Kullervo, awaits your redemption. Explore the prison’s cells to learn of his misdeeds and wield the power of treachery through his trademark daggers and thirst for vengeance. Modify your Fashion Frame with his signature Customizations — including the Kullervo Usvah Helmet and Ahlto Syandana — then master his Melee proficiency with the magnificent Vaenn Heavy Blade Skin.
ABILITIES
Passive: Whispers of Vaenn Kullervo boasts increased Heavy Attack Efficiency and Heavy Attack Wind Up Speed on all Melee weapons.
Wrathful Advance: (TAP) Kullervo charges a Heavy Attack then teleports to his target and strikes. His rage-filled focus temporarily increases his Critical Chance. (HOLD) Teleport to any marked location.
Recompense: Kullervo surrounds himself with daggers. Each dagger that strikes an enemy restores his health, but each dagger that misses an enemy strikes Kullervo, dealing a bit of damage. When Kullervo has max Health, he receives Overguard from struck enemies.
Collective Curse: Kullervo sends forth a curse that binds enemies. When a cursed enemy takes damage, every other cursed enemy also suffers a portion of that damage.
Storm of Ukko: The Void answers Kullervo’s invocation with a storm of daggers that rain down upon his enemies.
NEW DUVIRI ISLAND & TIME-LIMITED EVENT: KULLERVO’S HOLD
A new fortress-island has appeared in Duviri, begging you to dive in and discover its secrets. This strange, floating prison obfuscates both Kullervo’s crimes as well as the mysterious (yet familiar) Warden who binds him under lock and key. Unravel the sins of this tormented Warframe and earn his Blueprints by squaring off in a showdown of epic proportions!

I regret to inform everyone that (to everyone's disappointment) I won't shut up about Lunaro and I think the Aumen Chamfron looks like an Arcata.
I'm not taking constructive criticism on this matter, thank you.
#warframe#personal nonsense#okay but the aumen stuff does look cool. if it looks good on provolone dave ill probably get it

I drove down to Melrose today, primarily to visit the Trimontium Museum. The Trimontium to which this little museum is dedicated is Scotland's largest Roman fort, located at Newstead a little to the east, and houses a lot of archaeological finds unearthed there as well as some that were donated from other collections but are of the same type for illustrative purposes. A fair few artefacts from Trimontium are instead displayed in the National Museum in Edinburgh, such as the leather chamfron (horse helmet) I've mentioned before. This is it, for a reminder:

They've found a lot of other horse gear such as harness fittings, as well as a couple of Roman spatha swords which were typically wielded from horseback, so Trimontium's thought to have been primarily a cavalry fort. The name means something like 'Place of three hills', likely from the nearby Eildon Hills that they would've had a great view of. There's not much to see of the site today; it's been pretty thoroughly ploughed under, so nothing remains of the defensive earthworks but crop marks. It does boast the northernmost amphitheatre in the Roman Empire, but there's not much left of that either except for a slight undulation in the ground where the 'stands' were.
Pretty much all of the Roman sites found in Scotland have been military forts, or fort-adjacent like the Antonine Wall. The Romans veni'ed and vidi'ed a good few times, starting with Agricola's expedition in 79 CE and on and off over the years until the reign of Septimius Severus in the early 3rd century, but it seems they never really managed to vici enough to establish any substantial civilian settlement.
Take note, prop designers (mainly looking at you, Game of Thrones): a ballista is not just 'crossbow, but Big'. The 'kapwingg' comes from two comparatively stubby arms attached to heavy-duty torsion springs made of twisted rope, not the elasticity of a bow. The museum's is a working replica, apparently - I haven't seen it in action but they sometimes take it out for living history events and similar. Because nothing says 'fun for the whole family' like classical artillery!
I don't usually use the 'dead animal' tag for museum skeletons, but I am this time because I feel the gaping hole in that horse skull's forehead makes it a little more unpleasant than usual.

And with that, gremble is clocked out for the day. ✌️
It is in fact ready for my California trip now - I'm not going to dye it yet, because I'll be doing some final shaping when it meets the horse, and it will potentially need to get dampened again. We'll also be adding the straps that attach it to the bridle and putting in some sheepskin padding on the underside, and then when I'm back in my workshop I'll do the final dye and paint job.
