The Fickle Mistress of Light: A Photographer's Chronicle of 1880s London
My Dearest Eliza,
The fog, as ever, clings to the cobbled streets of London like a damp shroud this autumn. The days grow short, and the light, that fickle mistress of our craft, becomes increasingly elusive. I write to you amidst the clatter of my studio, the faint scent of collodion and hypo lingering in the air, a familiar perfume that both sustains and occasionally suffocates me.
Business, thankfully, remains steady, though the winds of change are certainly blowing through our profession. The public appetite for photographic likenesses continues unabated, yet the demands and expectations shift with every passing year. The carte-de-visite craze, whilst still providing a reliable income from family portraits and aspiring actors, has somewhat plateaued. Now, it is the larger cabinet cards, offering a more substantial image, that are increasingly favoured by those wishing to display their status and refinement.
The wet collodion process, though demanding and prone to its temperamental fits, remains the backbone of much of our finer work. The immediacy of coating the glass plate, sensitizing it in the silver nitrate bath within the darkened confines of the wet plate box, and then the swift exposure and development – it is a dance against time and the elements. Yet, the exquisite detail and tonal range achievable with a well-executed wet plate negative are still unmatched by the simpler, more commercially viable alternatives.
Speaking of which, the tin types, or ferrotypes as some prefer, continue their march into the everyday. Their speed and affordability make them a favourite amongst the working classes and for those seeking a quick memento at fairs and public gatherings. While they lack the delicate beauty of an albumen print struck from a glass negative, one cannot deny their accessibility has broadened the reach of photography considerably. I confess, I’ve even taken on a few tin type commissions myself when the coffers are looking particularly bare. One must adapt, after all.
The albumen print, with its glossy surface and delicate sepia tones, remains the standard for presentation. The meticulous process of coating paper with egg white and then sensitizing it – a task often relegated to young apprentices – is crucial for achieving that characteristic sheen and preserving the fine details captured by our lenses. The sheer volume of albumen paper required by studios across the city is staggering; one hears tales of egg merchants growing rich on our industry alone!
The names of the great photographers continue to inspire and occasionally intimidate. Julia Margaret Cameron’s evocative portraits, though sometimes criticized for their soft focus, possess a soulfulness that many of the more technically perfect images lack. And the architectural studies of Francis Frith, his majestic views of distant lands brought back on cumbersome wet plate equipment, remind us of the power of photography to document and educate.
The role of photography in society is evolving rapidly. Beyond portraiture, it is increasingly employed in commerce – advertisements, illustrations in periodicals, even the nascent field of photojournalism. The ability to capture a moment, a scene, with such apparent fidelity holds immense power, and businesses are beginning to recognize its potential to sway public opinion and drive sales.
However, this commercialization also brings its own set of anxieties. The proliferation of cheaper processes and the rise of less scrupulous operators threaten to devalue the artistry and skill that many of us have painstakingly cultivated. The market becomes flooded with poorly executed images, and the discerning eye must work harder to distinguish quality from mere novelty.
I remain committed to the craft, Eliza, to the pursuit of capturing light and shadow in a way that transcends mere documentation. But one cannot ignore the economic realities of our time. We must navigate these changing tides, embracing new technologies where sensible while holding fast to the principles of good composition and careful execution.
Write soon and tell me all your news.
Yours with enduring affection,
Arthur Penhaligon, Photographer. 12A Paternoster Row London.

"Facebook in 2025 feels like a forgotten city — once bustling with life, now a desolate landscape of old posts, stagnant timelines, and echoes of people who have moved on to other platforms. It’s as if the vibrant connections that once filled every corner have faded into silence, leaving behind only digital footprints and memories frozen in time."

Are Baby Boomers Being Swept Aside By A New Tsunami?
Is it true? Baby boomers have been replaced by a younger generation? Can it be true? Is it so? According to The New York Times and various other media sources, Baby Boomers are being displaced by an even larger demographic—millennials born in the brief 1990-91 blip. Yep. They’ve surpassed us in the race to be the biggest, baddest, and most influential group of people to hit the economic market…

Dreamstate Resonance - Don't Make A Fuss
Dreamstate Resonance - Don't Make A Fuss https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8OTJz2O5sSEMy first fully released song. I'd like to see what everyone here thinks. For context, I am a 24yr old one man band, multi instrumentalist musician from Western Australia and this is my solo project "Dreamstate Resonance".Every stage of this song from scratch to the writing and recording process of every instrument, writing of vocal melody and lyrics down to the mixing and mastering was done by me personally. Let me know what you think. In all it probably took me about 14 hours or so of work (non consecutively) over 3 days. Thank you, and feedback is much appreciated.Music video here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8OTJz2O5sSELinktree for all sorts of other stuff related to my art - https://ift.tt/g9zQEji was born in a time when life was vividAndI Don’t mind so please just don’t make a fussAndThings might seem strange, I guess that’s just every daySoWhat can we do? These things are called revolutions, and they're like big magic moments in history. Let's dive into ten of these awesome times when everything changed! 1. Farming Friends: The Agricultural Revolution

The Industrial Revolution Imagine a time when machines weren't everywhere. Suddenly, factories popped up, and machines could do incredible things. People moved to cities, and life became busier and full of exciting inventions. 3. Freedom Time: The American Revolution

The American Revolution Long, long ago, brave people in America wanted to be free from a king far away. They wrote down special words saying everyone should be treated fairly and have their own say. That's how they started their own country! 4. French Fancy: The French Revolution

The French Revolution In France, people said, "We want to be treated fairly too!" They waved their flags and wanted everyone to have a say in making rules. It was a bit messy, but it made a big difference for fairness. 5. Russia's Big Change: The Russian Revolution

The Russian Revolution In Russia, people wanted things to be different. They decided kings weren't needed, and a kind of sharing idea called communism came along. This changed Russia and the world too! 6. Japan's Surprise: The Industrialization of Japan

The Industrialization of Japan Japan once liked being by itself. Then, it decided to make changes and learn from other countries. It started building cool things and became super strong. Everyone was amazed! 7. China's New Way: The Chinese Communist Revolution

The Chinese Communist Revolution In China, a man named Mao wanted everyone to share everything. So, he and his friends started a big change and made a new kind of country. It's still different today because of them! 8. Tech Magic: The Digital Revolution

The Digital Revolution Can you imagine a world without phones and computers? In a short time, they appeared like magic! Now we can talk to friends far away and learn cool stuff online. 9. Change in the Air: The Arab Spring

The Arab revolution Once upon a time, in many countries, people wanted a voice and to be treated kindly. They spoke out and shared their wishes online. Some things got better, while others got a bit mixed up. 10. Looking Back: What We Learned from Revolutions

Revolutions These amazing times teach us important things. People can make big changes when they work together. Even if things are hard, they can get better if we use our hearts and minds. So, you see, these ten times when everything changed are like exciting stories that shaped the way we live today.
