Alright, chapter 219 of "Vinland Saga", and my heart continues to be torn out and stomped on repeatedly.
Einar really is gone, which he would have to be after suffering a wound like that. But still, it's a hard and bitter pill to swallow.
What I really loved about this chapter was how it fully acknowledges the reality that Thorfinn's ideal, while maybe it isn't attainable, it's still worth striving for. Yukimura is basically saying here that even if a land of peace never comes, that doesn't make Thorfinn's attempt to create it, or his belief in it, wrong. It's both a bleak reminder of the reality we all live in, a realistic acknowledgement of the human condition, while at the same time, expresses hope for the future.
But damn if I didn't get choked up watching Thorfinn having to bury Einar. That they buried him alongside Arnheid's bust was incredibly moving and felt symbolic of the end of this first attempt at creating a land of peace. The effort failed, unquestionably, but as the chapter, and Karli at the end, posits, that's no reason to give up, and it doesn't make the effort meaningless. The idea is to keep working toward that ideal, even if it's never, truly attained. I felt like this chapter did a really good job of balancing out the pain and sadness of our reality, with a more positive message of striving against that reality for something better.
Also seeing Thorfinn acknowledge through Einar's taking up of arms the "allure of war" as he put it, telling Einar that he understands him now, felt like Thorfinn acknowledging that an idealistic approach such as the one he was taking, putting simple faith in this idea that everything will work out between people if they just choose not to fight, wasn't ever a viable plan, because it doesn't account for the complexity of human emotion or the complex reality of morality as a concept. I think Thorfinn understands and is acknowledging here that when someone's back is against the wall and there are no other options, it's pretty much impossible not to take up arms and fight back. Everyone, inevitably, will succumb to it, even a man who hated war like Einar, because its only natural to defend yourself and those people and things you care about. Of course, the ideal solution to that would be to create circumstances in which nobodies back is ever against a wall, to somehow avoid situations where no other options are available. Karli's speech at the end to Gurdrid, about them needing to understand the disease better, and learning the Lnu's language in order to be able to properly communicate with them, is both practical and reasonable as that type of solution, but also, sadly, naive, because again, it supposes that the human condition can be overcome by reason alone, when so often, the circumstances that lead to war are rooted in irrationality, fear, misunderstanding, ignorance, ambition and even outright hatred and evil.
Still, the fight continues.
But ugh, the montage at the end of the chapter, showing flashbacks to Thorfinn's and Einar's friendship, absolutely gutted me. I honestly feel sick with grief. Thorfinn's lost his first and truest friend. It's the price he's had to pay for his idealism, the price he's had to pay for remaining a pacifist in a world predicated on violence, and it's completely heartbreaking. But it also highlights Thorfinn's strength, that through that price, he remains true to his beliefs. Him telling Einar that it made him happy to be understood by him was such a moving moment. As was him acknowledging how much Einar had suffered, and telling him to rest well.
Ugh, I won't ever really get over it. Thorfinn has lost so much and suffered so incredibly, and this feels like the final and heaviest blow. The conversation between Hild and Cordelia was also really moving, how both of them acknowledged that neither really understood the cost of killing, that only Thorfinn did, because he was the only one among them who had, the only one among them carrying that weight. It puts into perspective, again, how strong Thorfinn is, that he's been holding the weight of that since he was a child, and yet somehow still has the will to go on.
Anyway, amazing chapter, once again. I imagine "Vinland Saga" will be ending within a few chapters, which kills me to think about. It's truly one of the best manga's I've ever had the pleasure of reading. Truly a masterpiece.
I feel so heartbroken for Thorfinn. But he's started something important here, which, even in its failure, is the beginning of a journey toward a better world for humanity. It's the attempt at it that matters, even if, in the end, it remains only a hopeful dream.
Also, fuck Ugge. What a massive asshole that guy is. He's like the embodiment of someone who always believes the worst and won't even make an attempt at logic. I loved when that woman shut his ass up by asking if he was just a "guest" at the settlement. He tried to absolve himself of responsibility by blaming Thorfinn for everything, but it was all of them that decided to fight the Lnu in the first place instead of retreating. It was collectively all of their responsibility.

"Jhanna Lim, W.V. pharmaceutical CEO, father of one kid, and murderer of multiple people who were deemed as competition..."
"!!"
Suddenly a cold voice echoed across the warehouse startling Jhanna and the guards next to him. Frantically looking around, Jhanna shouted.
"You! Who are you! Show yourself"
After looking for a while, suddenly, his eyes paused towards a certain machine in the distance. Sitting on top of it was a figure wearing a mask that only covered half of his face. With a smile on his face, the figure slowly opened his mouth.
"Who am I? Hmm, now why would I be stupid enough to tell you my name?"
BADASS ENTRANCE, MY DEAR!

remember this?
chapte 220
remember how we we were robbed of spinner narrating the mva arc? bc i do and i'm still mad about it
for those who don't remember or haven't watch the anime: in the anime, izuku also narrate the mva even though it's spinner in the manga
i want to give the benefit of the doubt to those who worked on the anime. at first i didn't understand why spinner was the narrator either as he didn't seem like an important character
but now that mha is over, it's seems obvious that this narration was hinting at spinner's book, if not a part of the book itself
this entire arc is basically "yeah we're villains but we're also people and we care about each other, here's our story". so it doesn't make sense that izuku narrates it, but it does for spinner. his league was his reason to be, he let himself get mutilated/tortured/whatever you wanna call what afo did to him in the final arc for the league, and especially for shigaraki
so yeah, i wish we could have gotten narrator spinner
#atlas thinking ☆#and don't even get me started on the giran erasure#we were ROBBED#chapter 219 was his time to shine#and it just got deleted without any mention of the BEST monologue in the entire story#can you tell i love giran?#mha#bnha#my hero academia#boku no hero academia#dabi#todoroki touya#league of villains#shigaraki tomura#shimura tenko#spinner#shuichi iguchi#toga himiko#twice#mr compress#lov#kurogiri#my villain academia
