4 Tips To Find The Perfect Green Emerald For Your Engagement Ring
Selecting an engagement ring is a momentous decision, one that embodies your unique love story. While diamonds have traditionally taken center stage, green emerald engagement rings in New York captivate hearts with enchanting appeal. These exquisite gemstones, known for their lush green hues, symbolize not only love but also the promise of a flourishing future. When choosing an emerald for your engagement ring, it's essential to delve into the world of emeralds and understand what makes them exceptional.
The Charm Of Green Emeralds
Emeralds are part of the beryl family of gemstones, and their vibrant green color sets them apart. The mesmerizing green of emeralds is said to symbolize rebirth, growth, and renewal, making them a fitting choice for an engagement ring that represents the beginning of a lifelong journey together.
Understanding the Four Cs
Like diamonds, evaluating emeralds involves considering the four Cs: color, clarity, cut, and carat weight.
Color: The color of an emerald is of utmost importance. The most valuable emeralds display a deep green hue with excellent saturation and tone. The color should be vivid and as close to pure green as possible, without bluish or yellowish undertones.
Clarity: Unlike diamonds, emeralds often contain inclusions or imperfections. These "gardens" or "jardin" are a natural part of the gemstone's formation. Some inclusions can enhance the gem's character, but excessive cloudiness or fractures may affect its beauty. Cut: The cut of an emerald is all about maximizing its color and minimizing imperfections. The cut should enhance the gem's natural beauty and showcase its vibrant green.
Carat Weight: The size of the emerald, measured in carats, is a personal preference. Choose a size that aligns with your style and budget.
Different Styles for Different Tastes
When it comes to green emerald engagement rings, there are various styles to choose from: Solitaire: A single green emerald takes center stage, exuding timeless elegance and simplicity.
Three-Stone: Symbolizing the past, present, and future, a three-stone ring features an emerald flanked by two other gemstones.
Halo: A halo of smaller diamonds or gemstones surrounds the emerald, enhancing its brilliance and creating a stunning visual effect.
Vintage: Vintage or antique-inspired settings offer intricate designs and a sense of timeless romance. Custom Design: For a truly unique ring, consider a handcrafted engagement ring in New York that lets you personalize every aspect of your engagement ring.
Ethical Considerations
Emeralds are often associated with ethical and environmental concerns, but some jewelers specialize in responsibly sourced emeralds. Be sure to inquire about the origin of your emerald and the jeweler's commitment to ethical practices.
Ultimately, choosing the perfect green emerald for your engagement ring is a deeply personal experience. It reflects your love and symbolizes your commitment to a shared future. With a clear understanding of the four Cs and a style that resonates with your heart, you can select the ideal green emerald that will forever signify your love story's vibrant journey.

COPSHOP (2021)
Starring Gerard Butler, Frank Grillo, Alexis Louder, Toby Huss, Chad L. Coleman, Ryan O'Nan, Jose Pablo Cantillo, Kaiwi Lyman-Mersereau, Robert Walker Branchaud,       Tracey Bonner , Keith Jardine, Marshall Cook, Christopher Michael Holley, Marco Morales, Chris Kleckner, Karyn Greer, Vanita Kalra, David Vaughn, JR Adduci, Alex Rush, Greg Fitzpatrick and Joe Carnahan.
Screenplay by Kurt McLeod and Joe Carnahan.
Directed by Joe Carnahan.
Distributed by Universal Pictures Home Entertainment. 108 minutes. Rated R.
It seems like a long time ago when Gerard Butler was looked at as a budding star. Back then he was looked to for big-budget action films (300), serious period drama (Mrs. Brown), romantic comedy (The Ugly Truth), horror (Dracula 2000), kid’s films (Nim’s Island), serious romance (PS I Love You), Shakespeare adaptations (Coriolanus) and even musicals (he was probably miscast as the title character in the film adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera, but you have to give the guy credit for getting the part.)
However, a decade of bad choices and flop films has left him to this – a low-budget cheesy and overly violent grindhouse thriller called Copshop. Copshop is a pretty blatant rip off of John Carpenter’s 1976 cult classic Assault on Precinct 13 – which was itself a rip off of the classic Howard Hawks western Rio Bravo. (Oh, I’m sorry, inspired by…)
Hell, Butler doesn’t even get the lead role here – although he does get top billing. However, while he plays a big part – sort of an ambivalent bogeyman character – Alexis Louder and Frank Grillo both have more significant roles and more to do. And Grillo may have the most ridiculous man-bun in film history.
If the crazy gonzo violence of Copshop feels familiar, it is because it is the return of early-millennial hack Joe Carnahan, the “mastermind” behind such ultraviolent crap as Smokin’ Aces, The A-Team and The Grey. (In fairness, the last of these three was in a different style for him and actually not that bad.) I had thought that Carnahan’s career had finally sputtered out due to its own inertia (his last directing gig was 2014’s Stretch), but here he is again, and he hasn’t learned a thing – either as a director or as a storyteller.
In fact, the sheer gratuity of the gunfire and violence was strongly reminiscent of Smokin’ Aces – and I can’t tell you how much I hated Smokin’ Aces.
Copshop is better – slightly – but I can’t imagine ever wanting to see it again.
Like Precinct 13, Copshop is the story of a criminal named Teddy Murretto (Grillo) who is arrested and held in a small police precinct. (With Carnahan’s normal sledgehammer subtlety, the precinct is in an area called Gun City.) Outside the precinct, some bad criminals are looking to get at the guy and are willing to do anything they can to breach the jail. Therefore, a small troop of policemen must fight off the well-armed and bloodthirsty insurrectionists.
Butler plays Bob Viddick, a bigtime hitman who goes to extremes to get himself put in the same cell block as Murretto. However, his ruse is figured out by rookie cop Valerie Young (Louder), who handcuffs him in the cell and vows to protect Murretto, despite the fact he’s supposedly a very, very bad guy with a horrific hairdo.
Things get turned up a notch when another opposing hitman named Anthony Lamb (played by Toby Huss of Halt and Catch Fire, chewing scenery with gusto) shows up determined to collect on Murretto’s contract himself.
All of which leads to a gonzo violent showdown between the two hit men, the potential target and the very few cops who survive.
If you liked Smokin’ Aces – first of all, my condolences – but you will probably like Copshop. The rest of us should try to avoid it like a rain of bullets.

A Place to Belong Chapter 32: The Mind of a Child
Chapter 31
Read on AO3
Tumblr media
August 1750
“Ma petit lapin a bien du chagrin, il ne saute plus dans son p’tit jardin.”
Claire was holding little Janet under her arms, dipping her feet into the stream, causing intermittent squeals. Jenny was sitting with her feet dipped in, Michael in her lap, occasionally slapping at the surface of the water. Claire looked up from the little toddler in her arms, hearing a sweet song over the cacophony of the rest of the Murray children in the water.
Across the stream, Fergus was sitting in the shade with Brianna in his lap, teaching her a song about a little rabbit.
“Viens, Brianna, saute comme un lapin!”
Brianna giggled and scrambled off his lap to her feet.
“Saute, saute, saute, ma petit lapin!” They both sang, Brianna giving a little hop with each “saute.”
“Danse, danse, danse, danse ton p’tit jardin.” Fergus took her hand and twirled her by her finger.
“Saute, saute, saute, ma petit lapin, et dépêche-toi d’embrasser quelqu’un!”
Fergus pointed at his cheek, and Brianna obliged with a sweet kiss in accordance with the lyrics of the nursery rhyme.
“Très bien, ma petit lapin!” Fergus exclaimed, ruffling her wild curls.
“What the Devil is he teaching her to say?” Jenny said, pulling Claire out of the sweet scene and back to the baby in front of her.
“He’s calling her his little rabbit,” Claire said, her heart bursting with love. “It’s a song he’s been working on with her.”
“She’ll be talking circles around us all wi’ three tongues,” Jenny said, dodging a wild splash from one of her children — likely Katherine.
“Indeed,” Claire confirmed, giving Janet another swing, crying wee! as she did. “She can keep secrets from me in Gaelic and from you in French.”
“I ken some French, mind, but no’ as much as Ian or you. Or wee Brianna will I suppose.”
A loud splash suddenly cracked through the air, smacking both Claire and Jenny — and subsequently the twins — right in the face. The wee ones immediately began wailing from the surprise, and Claire sat back and held Janet in her arms to soothe her.
“See that, Mummy?” Brianna’s head poked out from the stream, a glint of fiendish pride in her cat eyes.
“Indeed…felt it, too,” Claire said wryly.
“I hopped!” she said. “Je suis un lapin!”
“Un très grosse lapin,” Claire said, bouncing Janet. “Quite inconsiderate to the little ones, Brianna.”
“Sorry, Mummy!” she cried before toddling over to her cousins. The stream was deep enough for her to jump into but still be able to brush the bottom with her toes if she didn’t go too far.
Fergus waded in and sloshed his way across to Claire.
“She is braw with French, is she not?” Fergus said proudly.
“She is. She has a wonderful teacher,” Claire said, beaming proudly at him, mussing his wet hair.
He gave Claire a deliberately wet, sloppy kiss on the cheek before diving after the little ones like a raging sea monster sending squeals and shrieks into the atmosphere. Janet and Michael finally stopped wailing, both of them actually growing rather sleepy, much to mother and auntie’s relief.
As time went by, Claire could not help but notice that a particular squeal was no longer among the throng, and she looked up to see Brianna draped on Fergus’s back, arms around his neck, cheek squished between his shoulder blades.
“Fergus,” Claire called. He trudged through the water again, still carrying Brianna. “What’s the matter, love?” Claire felt her forehead and cheek.
“Tired, Mummy,” Brianna mumbled, sighing heavily into Fergus’s back.
“Are you sure you’re alright? Does your head hurt? Do you feel feverish?”
“Tired, Mummy,” she said again, sounding more irritable.
“Alright, alright. It’s alright. Fergus.” Claire carefully shifted Janet into his arms, and he held her up, making sure to not submerge her in the water. Claire lifted Brianna off his back and pulled her into her lap.
Brianna hadn’t gotten sleepy in the middle of the day since she was still two years old, and she was going to be four come November. Claire waited until Brianna was dry before feeling her head again to be sure that the water hadn’t cooled off any fever she may have had, but she still felt just fine. She did a lot of squirming and whining in Claire’s arms, muttering over and over that she was tired, Mummy, and that she did not want to play anymore.
This seemed extremely out of character for her daughter, and Claire was starting to worry. Her wild little thing had never voluntarily asked to nap or stop playing.
“I’m going to take her back to the house,” Claire said to Jenny, who now had two little toddlers on her outstretched legs. “She may just need to get out of the sun.”
“Aye, that sounds best.”
“Come on, little love, it’s alright.” Claire stood up and sighed heavily as Brianna settled on her hip, and they began the short trek back to the house. All the while, Brianna made heartbreaking little moaning sounds against Claire’s neck and her right arm slipped off of Claire’s neck.
“Can’t hold on, Mummy…” she whined.
“What do you mean, darling?”
“Can’t hold on!” she wailed, starting to cry.
Claire’s heart leapt into her throat with panic, and she began racing back to the house double-time.
“Mummy’s got you, sweetheart. It’s alright. I’ve got you…”
Her cries were soft and small, and that was what frightened Claire more. Brianna was not quiet when she was upset.
Claire crossed the threshold into the house, calling for Mrs. Crook to retrieve her medical kit from the barn.
“Brianna?” Claire sat her down on the sofa in the parlor, trying as hard as she could to keep her voice even and calm. “Can you pick up your arm for me, darling?”
Brianna cried harder at this, her fingers wiggling.
“Can’t, Mummy!”
“Do you feel this?” Claire pinched her upper arm, and she shook her head, her chin trembling. “Alright, it’s alright. Mummy’s here.”
Numbness and tingling in her arm, irritability and exhaustion.
Brianna was going to have a seizure, and this was her first time being able to vocalize what was wrong.
Mrs. Crook entered the parlor with the medical kit and Claire demanded that the furniture be cleared so that Brianna could sit in the center of the room and not worry about hitting her head. This was the first time they hadn’t been caught completely off guard by a seizure, and Claire was going to take advantage of it.
“What’s happening here?” Ian’s voice had Claire looking up from the floor with Brianna. He’d been at his desk taking care of the ledgers, which is precisely the reason the children needed to be out of the house, so that he could count without pawing hands and shrieking voices.
“I think she’s going to have a seizure,” Claire said.
Mrs. Crook was out of the room brewing chamomile, and Ian nodded. Suddenly, a sharp yapping filled the room, Jehu and Bran having apparently followed Ian from his desk to the parlor.
“Oi! Hold yer wheesht, ye wee fool,” Ian commanded, but the little thing kept carrying on.
He bounded from Ian’s side and right up to Brianna, and Claire instinctively wrapped her arms around her protectively.
“Jehu! Enough, ye mangy mutt!”
But on he went, barking viciously in Brianna’s face.
“Wait,” Claire said, releasing Brianna. “I think he’s trying to tell us something.”
“How d’ye mean?”
“Dogs have a nose for things. I’ve seen it myself, in Paris.” Claire thought back to Bouton at L’Hopital, how he could sniff certain illnesses and inform his mistress what ailed certain patients. “I think he can somehow tell that Brianna is about to seize.”
“A dog that kens what ails a person?” Ian exclaimed in disbelief.
“It’s alright, Jehu,” Claire said, reaching a hesitant hand to stroke his head. “Good boy, Jehu. Very helpful. Good boy.”
He continued barking intermittently, soothed only somewhat by Claire’s ministrations.
“Do you have a…a reward for him?” Claire said. “We should encourage this behavior, no?”
“Aye, I suppose.”
Mrs. Crook flitted back into the parlor with freshly brewed chamomile, only to be sent back out again to retrieve a small bit of raw meat for the dog.
“This is a good thing, Ian,” Claire said, her concern for her daughter briefly overshadowed by the excitement at the prospect of a medical discovery. “She can’t sleep in my bed forever, and even if she did, there’s no guarantee I won’t sleep through a seizure. He could stay in the room with us, wake me up with that barking if he can sense it.”
“Aye, and he’s loud enough to rouse the whole of our tenants from a dead slumber.”
“She could sleep in her own room, Ian, with the other children. A sense of normalcy,” Claire’s heart and head felt light as she scratched behind Jehu’s ears, feeding him the bit of meat that Mrs. Crook gave her.
“Good boy, Jehu. Very good boy.”
It was not long after that Brianna fell over, stiff as a board, and Claire tended to her. Jehu finally calmed down and Ian scooped the little rat terrier up, holding him securely in his large hands. For all the build up, it was a small seizure, only just under twenty-five seconds, but it was, of course, enough to wear out her poor girl.
She vomited as she always did, onto the blanket that Mrs. Crook had lain out atop the rug in the parlor for an easier clean-up.
Claire pulled Brianna into her lap and soothed her as she wept quietly, whining on and on about being tired, that her bones hurt, that her teeth hurt.
Claire put her to bed after giving her as much chamomile as she would tolerate, and Ian stood by, still holding onto Jehu.
“She’s alright?” Ian said, worry written into his every feature.
“Yes, she’ll be fine.” Claire sighed, sitting on the edge of the bed and brushing some curls out of Brianna’s sleepy eyes. “And I think with that little one’s help,” she looked up at Jehu. “It’s going to get a lot easier.”
——
December 31, 1750
Brianna was sat securely on Fergus’s shoulders as the whole of Lallybroch was gathered around the clock at five minutes to midnight. Claire had her arms draped around Fergus’s shoulders, stroking Brianna’s little feet, giggling in her tipsy haze. The hand on the clock crept closer to the twelve, and Brianna drummed mercilessly on Fergus’s head in anticipation. The buzzing chatter of the room escalated to whooping cries as it finally turned midnight, and the fiddler started in again as everyone tossed back more whisky.
Claire laughed joyously and gave Fergus a sloppy kiss on the cheek, clasping his face in her hands far too tightly. Fergus laughed and dramatically wiped his cheek like a snotty little boy, and then he tossed Brianna off his shoulders and caught her securely in his arms. She squealed and threw her arms around his neck.
“Bonne Année, ma petit lapin!”
“Bonne Année, mon frère!” She kissed his cheek as messily as her mother had, and then shifted over to kiss Claire. “Happy New Year, Mummy.”
“Happy New Year, my darling girl.”
The dancing picked up again, and Fergus swung Brianna around a bit too recklessly for Claire’s liking, but she was laughing too hard to be able to stop it. Her baby was four years old now, and her little boy was fifteen. It was inconceivable, impossible to wrap her head around.
And Caitlin’s first birthday had passed as well.
It had been a quiet, sad day. Jenny and Ian spent a long time at her grave. Claire had admired that Jenny had even gotten out of bed. It was more than Claire could say she’d done on Faith’s first birthday.
It had been a long, hard year, 1750. Strangely enough, perhaps the most difficult of all. Claire had gone through lower moments than any others in her life, Caitlin’s loss having dug up the deepest pain she’d ever carried, forcing it to claw its way to the surface. Even after all she’d survived, she wasn’t sure she could.
But she had, they had. She and her family, together.
She would be shattered, a hollow, empty shell without their love.
But with it, perhaps someday she would feel something akin to true happiness again.
——
February 1751
Claire and Jenny were trying valiantly to teach Kitty and Brianna how to milk the goats without much success. They kept getting distracted petting their soft coats, giggling with each other over little whispers that Claire couldn't decipher for the life of her, and chasing the goats that weren’t being milked, effectively disrupting the current milking. They very nearly even spilt the milk that had been collected, and Jenny had howled until she was red in the face.
“D’ye ken how valuable even a single drop is? D’ye want tae starve?”
They’d sat still as stone after that outburst.
Now, Claire was holding Brianna in place between her knees, both pairs of hands on the udders, teaching her how to squeeze, and Kitty was doing much the same, though she seemed much less pleased about it than her cousin.
“Mummy?” Brianna piped up.
“Yes, darling?”
“Are you English?”
Claire’s brow furrowed slightly in amused confusion. “Well, yes. Of course I am.”
“But you’re not,” Brianna said, her voice pitching higher curiously.
“Whatever do you mean?” Claire chuckled softly.
“You’re kind, Mummy,” Brianna said, as if it were the most obvious thing in the world.
Oh.
“Kitty said you’re English,” Brianna continued, and the cousin in question shot her head up, gaping at Claire with wide eyes as if she’d been found out in some way. “But I said you’re not. Because you’re kind.”
It was Jenny’s turn to look up, exchanging a slightly flustered look with Claire.
A week ago, the Redcoats had dropped by again unannounced, and Jenny had launched into her usual protective scheming, declaring that Brianna and Kitty were to pretend they were sisters.
“That means ye’re my bairn, Brianna. D’ye hear me?”
Claire had listened with baited breath from the priest hole, grateful to have time to hide this time and not have to come up with more excuses to not talk.
“And ye’ll call me Mam, no’ Mummy. Understood?”
Claire listened to the usual droning of the Captain and his men, and to her horror, he actually addressed Brianna directly.
“Why does she not talk like a Scot?”
“Whatever d’ye mean? ’Course she talks like a Scot.”
“The speech seems…tainted.”
Jenny was always a quick thinker.
“Och, she’s just mockin’ ye, Captain. She parrots the voices she hears, ye ken. Cheeky wee thing.”
Claire heard Brianna give a small pained cry, and she supposed Jenny had given her a small swat upside the head.
“Ye’ll stop mocking an agent of His Majesty at once, Brianna Murray. Understood?”
“Aye, Mam.”
Good girl.
Claire had made note in that moment to speak to Brianna about the difference between English speech and Scots speech. Apparently such knowledge would come in handy.
It would appear the girls had picked up on more danger in that situation than they’d originally let on.
And now her niece and her daughter thought she was an evil Redcoat.
“Brianna…sweetheart…” Claire sighed in defeat, releasing their shared grip on the udders and drawing her daughter into her lap.
“I am English. And so are you, well half of you, at least.”
“I am?”
Claire’s heart nearly broke at how horrified she sounded.
“Yes. But, Brianna, just because we share…speech and…background with the Redcoats doesn’t mean we are Redcoats. Do you understand?”
Brianna just blinked up at her, and Claire looked sheepishly at Jenny, then down at Kitty, who was blinking at her just as wide-eyed as Brianna.
“The soldiers that come to Lallybroch are…are not kind. You’re right about that,” Claire said, rubbing Brianna’s quickly chilling upper arms. “I chose to become a Scot when I married your Da. I have English blood, and I talk like an English lady, but I love Scotland very much. Don’t you?”
“Aye, Mummy.”
“See? I may be English, but I’m no Redcoat.” Claire gave Brianna’s neck a little tickle, eliciting a few giggles.
“D’ye hear, Kitty?” Jenny said, and the little blonde head nodded. “No more talk of yer Auntie being a nasty Redcoat now. Understood?”
“Aye, Mam.”
“Inside wi’ ye now, both of ye,” Jenny said. “Yer wee bones have been in the cold far too long. We’ll finish here.”
“Stay bundled up in front of the fire until Mrs. Crook says you can move,” Claire added as the two little girls starting shuffling out of the pen. They took each other’s hands and walked gaily back to the house, Kitty emitting an ungodly shriek before they disappeared.
“Christ,” Claire muttered, burying her face in her frozen hands. “I didn’t expect anything like that.”
“Ye never know what’ll come out of a bairn’s mouth,” Jenny said, giving her a knowing look as they returned their attention to the goats.
“Do you think they understand, truly?” Claire asked, a lingering sense of guilt and doubt still churning in her gut.
“Dinna ken. Hope so at least. They know better than to think ye mean us any harm. They’re just…”
“Confused.”
“Aye.”
Jenny sighed, frustrated. “She’s dry already. Yers?”
“About done as well.”
They both attempted to squeeze the last bits of milk they could, and then shooed the goats off.
“Well, it’s a bit more than last time. Isn’t it?”
“Hard to tell,” Jenny said, standing up with her bucket, and Claire followed suit.
Claire opened the goat pen and stepped through waiting for Jenny to close the gate behind them. Hearing the clunk of the wooden latch, Claire began walking, and then was surprised to feel an arm drape around her shoulders.
“Dinna fash, sister,” Jenny said. “Ye ken Kitty loves ye. Ye ken they all do.”
Claire smiled softly, returning the embrace, pressing their bodies together as they strolled toward the house. “I know.”
“Ye heard the way she asked, didn’t ye? She didna believe that ye could possibly be like them.”
“I know,” Claire said wistfully. “Just the fact that she even had to ask…that it was even something they talked about.”
“I ken.” Jenny gave her shoulder a squeeze.
“Do you ever wonder…how much…how much longer we can keep it up…?” Claire asked, the slightest tinge of panic stinging her heart.
“They’ll grow tired of sniffing out Jacobites eventually,” Jenny said, seemingly not at all fussed about the entire situation. “And besides, I’m quite the…oh, what was it ye said?”
Claire broke into a grin. “Quite the actress.”
Jenny tossed her head back in a hearty laugh. “Aye, that’s it! Tell me again about those moving portraits ye’d like to see me in.”
“Dear me,” Claire teased. “I do believe I’ve given you quite a big head.”
Jenny gave her a small shove, careful not to spill a drop of either pail of milk, and yet they held each other all the more tightly, stumbling up the porch steps and giggling like schoolgirls.

LGBTQ Book & Film Recommendations
Hello! As someone who tries to read widely, it can sometimes be frustrating to find good (well-written, well-made) LGBTQ+ works of literature and film, and mainstream recommendations only go so far. This is my shortlist.
Some caveats: 1) I have only watched/seen some of these, though they have all been well-received.
2) The literature list is primarily focused on adult literary and genre fiction, since that is what I mostly read, and I feel like it’s easier to find queer YA fiction. Cece over at ProblemsOfABookNerd (YT) covers a lot of newer releases and has a YA focus, so you can check her out for more recommendations.
3) There are a ton of good films and good books that either reference or discuss queer theory, LGBTQ history and literary theory. These tend to be more esoteric and academic, and I’m not too familiar with queer theory, so they’ve largely been left off the list. I do agree that they’re important, and reading into LGBTQ-coding is a major practice, but they’re less accessible and I don’t want to make the list too intimidating.
4) I linked to Goodreads and Letterboxd because that’s what I use and I happen to really enjoy the reviews.
Any works that are bolded are popular, or they’re acclaimed and I think they deserve some attention. I’ve done my best to flag potential objections and triggers, but you should definitely do a search of the reviews. DoesTheDogDie is also a good resource. Not all of these will be suitable for younger teenagers; please use your common sense and judgement.
Please feel free to chime in in the replies (not the reblogs) with your recommendations, and I’ll eventually do a reblog with the additions!
BOOKS
> YOUNG ADULT
Don’t @ me asking why your favourite YA novel isn’t on this list. These just happen to be the picks I felt might also appeal to older teens/twentysomethings.
Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe
Clap When You Land by Elizabeth Acevedo - poetry.
Felix Ever After by Kacen Callender - trans male teen protagonist.
Red, White & Royal Blue
Simon vs the Homo Sapiens Agenda
The Gentleman’s Guide To Vice And Virtue
The Raven Boys (and Raven Cycle)
> LITERATURE: GENERAL
This list does skew M/M; more NB, trans and WLW recommendations are welcomed!
A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara. One of the most acclaimed contemporary LGBTQ novels and you’ve probably heard of it. Will probably make you cry.
A Single Man by Christopher Isherwood. Portrait of a middle-aged gay man.
Brideshead Revisited by Evelyn Waugh. M/M affair, British student high society; definitely nostalgic for the aristocracy so be aware of the context.
Call Me By Your Name by André Aciman. It’s somewhat controversial, it’s gay, everyone knows the film at least.
Cronus’ Children / Le Jardin d'Acclimation by Yves Navarre. Winner of the Goncourt prize.
Dancer From The Dance by Andrew Holleran. A young man in the 1970s NYC gay scene. Warning for drugs and sexual references.
Dorian, An Imitation by Will Self. Adaptation of Orscar Wilde’s novel. Warning for sexual content.
Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe by Fannie Flagg. Two wlw in the 1980s. Also made into a film; see below.
Gemini by Michel Tournier. The link will tell you more; seems like a very complex read. TW for troubling twin dynamics.
Giovanni’s Room by James Baldwin. Another iconic M/M work.
Lost Boi by Sassafras Lowrey. A queer punk reimagining of Peter Pan. Probably one of the more accessible works on this list!
Lie With Me by Philippe Besson. Two teenage boys in 1980s France.
Maurice by E. M. Forster. Landmark work written in 1914. Also made into a film; see below.
Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides. An expansive (and long) novel about the story of Cal, a hermaphrodite, by the author of The Virgin Suicides.
Orlando by Virginia Woolf. Plays with gender, time and space. Virginia Woolf’s ode to her lover Vita Sackville-West. What more do you want? (also a great film; see below).
Oscar Wilde’s works - The Picture of Dorian Gray would be the place to start. Another member of the classical literary canon.
Saga, vol.1 by Brian K. Vaughn and Fiona Staples. Graphic novel; warning for sexual content.
Stone Butch Blues by Leslie Feinburg. An acclaimed work looking at working-class lesbian life and gender identity in pre-Stonewall America.
The Holy Innocents by Gilbert Adair. The basis for Bertolucci’s The Dreamers (2003). I am hesitant to recommend this because I have not read this, though I have watched the film; the M/M dynamic and LGBTQ themes do not seem to be the primary focus. Warning for sexual content and incestuous dynamics between the twins.
The Animals At Lockwood Manor by Jane Healey. Plays with gothic elements, set during WW2, F/F elements.
The Hours by Michael Cunningham. References Woolf’s Mrs Dalloway. Probably a good idea to read Virginia Woolf first.
The Immoralist by André Gide. Translated from French.
The Song of Achilles by Madeline MIller. Drawing from the Iliad, focusing on Achilles and Patroclus. Contemporary fantasy that would be a good pick for younger readers.
The Swimming Pool Library by Alan Hollinghurst. Gay life pre-AIDS crisis. Apparently contains a fair amount of sexual content.
What Belongs To You by Garth Greenwell. A gay man’s coming of age in the American South.
> LITERATURE: WORLD LITERATURE
American and Western experiences are more prominent in LGBTQ works, just due to the way history and the community have developed, and the difficulties of translation. These are English and translated works that specifically foreground the experiences of non-White people living in (often) non-Western societies. I’m not white or American myself and recommendations in this area are especially welcomed.
All Boys Aren’t Blue by George M. Johnson. The memoirs and essays of a queer black activist, exploring themes of black LGBTQ experiences and masculinity.
A People’s History of Heaven by Mathangi Subramanian. Female communities and queer female characters in a Bangalore slum. A very new release but already very well received.
Confessions of a Mask by Yukio Mishima. Coming-of-age in post-WW1 Japan. This one’s interesting, because it’s definitely at least somewhat autobiographical. Mishima can be a tough writer, and you should definitely look into his personality and his life when reading his work.
Disoriental by Négar Djavadi. A family saga told against the backdrop of Iranian history by a queer Iranian woman. Would recommend going into this knowing at least some of the political and historical context.
How We Fight For Our Lives by Saeed Jones. A coming-of-age story and memoir from a gay, black man in the American South.
In The Dream House by Carmen Maria Machado. Another acclaimed contemporary work about the dynamics of abuse in LGBTQ relationships. Memoir.
Girl, Woman, Other by Bernardine Evaristo. Contemporary black British experience, told from the perspectives of 12 diverse narrators.
> POETRY
Crush by Richard Siken. Tumblr loves Richard Siken, worth a read.
Diving Into The Wreck by Adrienne Rich.
He’s So Masc by Chris Tse.
If Not, Winter: Fragments of Sappho, trans. Anne Carson. The best presentation of Sappho we’re likely to get.
Lord Byron’s works - Selected Poems may be a good starting point. One of the Romantics and part of the classical literary canon.
Les Fleurs du Mal by Charles Baudelaire. The explicitly lesbian poems are apparently in the les fleurs du mal section.
> MEMOIR & NONFICTION
And The Band Played On: Politics, People and the AIDS Epidemic by Randy Shilts. An expansive, comprehensive history and exposure of the failures of media and the Reagan administration, written by an investigative journalist. Will probably make you rightfully angry.
How to Survive A Plague: The Inside Story of How Citizens and Science Tamed AIDS by David France. A reminder of the power of community and everyday activism, written by a gay reporter living in NYC during the epidemic.
Indecent Advances: The Hidden History of Murder and Masculinity Before Stonewall by James Polchin. True crime fans, this one’s for you. Sociocultural history constructed from readings of the news and media.
Queer: A Graphic History by Meg-John Barker. It’s illustrated, it’s written by an academic, it’s an easier introduction to queer theory. I still need to pick up a copy, but it seems like a great jumping-off point with an overview of the academic context.
Real Queer America by Samantha Allen. The stories of LGBTQ people and LGBTQ narratives in the conservative parts of America. A very well received contemporary read.
The Argonauts by Maggie Nelson. Gender, pregnancy and queer partnership. I’m not familiar with this but it is quite popular.
When Brooklyn Was Queer by Hugh Ryan. LGBTQ history of Brooklyn from the nineteenth century to pre-Stonewall.
FILMS
With films it’s difficult because characters are often queercoded and we’re only now seeing films with better rep. This is a shortlist of better-rated films with fairly explicit LGBTQ coding, LGBTQ characters, or made by LGBTQ persons. Bolded films are ones that I think are likely to be more accessible or with wider appeal.
A Single Man (2009) - Colin Firth plays a middle-aged widower.
Blue Is The Warmest Colour (2013) - A controversial one. Sexual content.
Booksmart (2019) - A pretty well made film about female friendship and being an LGBTQ teen.
Boy Erased (2018) - Warning for conversion therapy.
BPM (Beats Per Minute) (2017) - Young AIDS activists in France.
Brokeback Mountain (2005) - Cowboy gays. This film is pretty famous, do you need more summary? Might make a good triple bill with Idaho and God’s Own Country.
Cabaret (1972) - Liza Minelli. Obvious plug to also look into Vincent Minelli.
Calamity Jane (1953) - There’s a lot that could be said about queer coding in Hollywood golden era studio films, but this is apparently a fun wlw-cowboy westerns-vibes watch. Read the reviews on this one!
Call Me By Your Name (2017) - Please don't debate this film in the notes.
Caravaggio (1986) - Sean Bean and Tilda Swinton are in it. Rather explicit.
Carol (2015) - Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara are lesbians in 1950s America.
Clouds of Sils Maria (2014) - Hard to summarise, but one review calls it “lesbian birdman” and it has both Juliette Binoche and Kristen Stewart in it, so consider watching it.
Colette (2018) - About the bi/queer female writer Colette during the belle epoque era. This had Keira Knightley so by all rights Tumblr should love it.
Fried Green Tomatoes (1991) - Lesbian love in 1920s/80s? America.
God’s Own Country (2017) - Gay and British.
Happy Together (1997) - By Wong Kar Wai. No further explanation needed.
Heartbeats (2010) - Bi comedy.
Heartstone (2016) - It’s a story about rural Icelandic teenagers.
Henry Gamble’s Birthday Party (2015) -  Queer teens and religious themes.
Je, Tu, Il, Elle (1974) - Early Chantal Akerman. Warning for sexual scenes.
Kill Your Darlings (2013) - Ginsberg, Kerouac and the Beat poets.
Love, Simon (2018)
Lovesong (2016) - Lesbian and very soft. Korean-American characters.
Love Songs (2007) - French trio relationship. Louis Garrel continues to give off non-straight vibes.
Mädchen In Uniform (1931) - One of the earliest narrative films to explicitly portray homosexuality. A piece of LGBTQ cinematic history.
Maurice (1987) - Adaptation of the novel.
Midnight Cowboy (1969) - Heavy gay coding.
Milk (2008) - Biopic of Harvey Milk, openly gay politician. By the same director who made My Own Private Idaho.
Moonlight (2016) - It won the awards for a reason.
My Own Private Idaho (1991) - Another iconic LGBTQ film. River Phoenix.
Mysterious Skin (2004) - Go into this film aware, please. Young actors, themes of prostitution, child ab*se, r***, and a lot of trauma.
Orlando (1992) - An excellent adaptation of Virginia Woolf’s novel, and in my opinion far more accessible. Watch it for the queer sensibilities and fantastic period pieces.
Pariah (2011) - Excellent coming-of-age film about a black lesbian girl in Brooklyn.
Paris is Burning (1990) - LANDMARK DOCUMENTARY piece of LGBTQ history, documenting the African-American and Latine drag and ballroom roots of the NYC queer community.
Persona (1966) - It’s an Ingmar Bergman film so I would recommend knowing what you’re about to get into, but also I can’t describe it because it’s an Ingmar Bergman film.
Picnic At Hanging Rock (1975) - Cult classic queercoded boarding school girls.
Portrait of a Lady on Fire (2019) - By Celine Sciamma, who’s rapidly establishing herself in the mainstream as a LGBTQ film director. This is a wlw relationship and the queer themes are reflected in the cinematic techniques used. A crowd pleaser.
Pride (2014) - Pride parades with a British sensibility.
Rebel Without A Cause (1955) - Crowd-pleaser with bi coding and James Dean. The OG version of “you’re tearing me apart!”.
Rocketman (2019) - It’s Elton John.
Rent (2005) - Adaptation of the stage musical. Not the best film from a technical standpoint. I recommend the professionally recorded 2008 closing night performance instead.
Rope (1948) - Hitchcock film.
Sorry Angel (2018) - Loving portraits of gay French men.
Talk To Her (2002) - By Spanish auteur Pedro Almodóvar.
Tangerine (2015) - About trans sex workers. The actors apparently had a lot of input in the film, which was somehow shot on an iPhone by the same guy who went on to do The Florida Project.
The Duke of Burgundy (2014) - Lesbians in an S&M relationship that’s going stale, sexual content obviously.
The Gay Deceivers (1969) - The reviews are better than me explaining.
The Handmaiden (2016) - Park Chan-wook makes a film about Korean lesbians and is criminally snubbed at the Oscars. Warning for sexual themes and kink.
The Favourite (2018) - Period movie, and lesbian.
Thelma And Louise (1991) - An iconic part of LGBTQ cinematic history. That is all.
The Celluloid Closet (1995) - A look into LGBTQ cinematic history, and the historical contexts we operated in when we’ve snuck our narratives into film.
The Miseducation of Cameron Post (2018) - Adaptation of the YA novel.
The Neon Demon (2016) - Apparently based on Elizabeth Bathory, the blood-drinking countess. Very polarising film and rated R.
The Perks of Being A Wallflower (2012) - Book adaptation. It has Ezra Miller in it I guess.
The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975) - No explanation needed, queer and transgressive vibes all the way.
They (2017) - Gender identity, teenagers.
Those People (2015) - They’re gay and they’re artists in New York.
Tomboy (2011) - One of the few films I’ve seen dealing with gender identity in children (10 y/o). Celine Sciamma developing her directorial voice.
Tropical Malady (2004) - By Thai auteur Apichatpong Weerasethakul. His is a very particular style so don’t sweat it if you don’t enjoy it.
Vita and Virginia (2018) - Virginia Woolf and Vita Sackville-West biopic
Water Lilies (2007) - Celine Sciamma again! Teenage lesbian coming-of-age.
When Marnie Was There (2014) - A Studio Ghibli film exploring youth, gender and sexuality.
Weekend (2011) - An indie film about young gay love.
Wilde (1997) - It’s a film about Oscar Wilde.
XXY (2007) - About an intersex teenager. Reviews on this are mixed.
Y Tu Mama Tambien (2001) - Wonder what Diego Luna was doing before Rogue One? This is one of the things. Warning for sexual content.

Quote
Men become attached to certain particular sciences and speculations, either because they fancy themselves the authors and inventors thereof, or because they have bestowed the greatest pains upon them and become most habituated to them. But men of this kind, if they betake themselves to philosophy and contemplation of a general character, distort and color them in obedience to their former fancies; a thing especially to be noticed in Aristotle, who made his natural philosophy a mere bond servant to his logic, thereby rendering it contentious and well-nigh useless.

The Beach Boys Go To The Beach
A crack fic written in 27 (ish) minutes and I don’t know much about the beach boys and I only have my sister for help (who does not know them either)
———
Once upon a time, Brian Wilson woke up and said to himself: “Wow I would like to go to the beach today uwu!” He jumped off his bed (which was shaped like a bed) and onto his brothers, Dennis and Carl.
“I have an important announcement!” he announced.
“What is it big bro?” asked Carl, as if he was a book character written by someone who didn’t have any siblings. “Did Al dye his hair orange?? :O”
“I was having a nice dream. It better be important,” said Dennis.
“It is berry important, little bros,” said Brian, as if he was a book character written by someone who didn’t have any siblings. “So important that Mike Love, who is our cousin,” he added for some context. “Is coming into our room using the medium of Al Jardine.”
At that berry moment, Mike Love jumped into the bathroom window (oh no wrong band) holding Al Jardine by the foot. “Henlo, cousins,” he said. “I have heard that you have announced some important announcements that are so important that I came into your room through the bathroom window.” He heard Sir James Paul McCartney scream as if he was dying.
“LMAO” said Al Jardine. His name was Alan but he changed it to Al for Alabama.
“I want to go to the beach,” said Brian Wilson.
“Omg same,” said Carl.
“Wot I wanted to the cinema,” said Dennis, being the odd one out (again)
“I don’t care, little brother,” said both Wilsons.
“But Carl, little brother, you are younger than me.”
“STFU” said Michael Edward Love, already in beach gear. “I am beach body ready.”
“Wow same,” said Alabama Jardinia, who too was in beach gear.
“Us too,” said the other Wilsons, except Dennis (who got left out again)
Suddenly, Bruce Johnson appeared out of nowhere….”Can I join you too??”
“No,” they all said at once (even Dennis, who was not being left out for once). “You come in later.”
“SaD emOji” uttered Bruce Johnson as he left through the door
“Let us go to the beach :D” said the boys of the beach and the scene cut to them in the beach boy mobile.
“Zoooooooooooooooooom!!!” said the car. But suddenly a car crash with the beatles in the beatle mobile (Brian Epstein’s car).
“Oi clods wot are yah doin,” said the British insects.
“This is your problem >:O” said the beachiest boys.
Suddenly, Roger Meddows Taylor’s falsetto rang in their ears. OH NO. He was singing I’m in love with my car! The rest of the Queenie Boys were covering their ears except John Richard Deacon born August the nineteenth, nineteen fifty won, who was covering his Cheese On ToastTM’s non-existent ears full stop
They crashed into them (and also the Monkees who magically appeared there too (poor Peter Halsen Dorkelson was crying)) :(((((((((((( PERiDoT EXclamaTion Mark saD EMOJI
“OH NO” said the sand children. “We will never go to the beach Sad Emoji”)
Suddenly, Doctor Who (Pete Townshed!) appeared in his tardis and said “Yall can go to the cinema HaPpY eMoJI. But then he was venusian akidoed out by the fourth doctor played by Tom Baker.
“Go away >:O” said the fourth doctor played by Thomas Baker as he zoomed away in his Tardis.
“OH NO sAD emOji!!” said all of them.
“Oh hey we can go to the cinema HapPy eMoJi uwu!!” said Dennis Wilson, finally fulfilling his dreams.
“No little bro,” said Brian Wilson.
“No big bro,” said Carl Wilson.
“No, cousin,” said Mikaka Liek
“No, budye,” said Alberta Canada.
“No fellow classic rock band person,” said the others.
“The cinema is closed EXCLAMATION MARK” said all of them at once as a crowd of people came in to watch the Sonic Movie (2020).
“And George Harrison has already eaten David Tennnant who was walking by just now,” said John Lennon, world famous guitarist most notably the rhythm guitarist of the Beatles.
“Let’s ALL GO ICE SKATING!!!!!!!!!!!!!” said all of them, leaving out Dennis Wilson. They all drove away with their broken cars (except for the monkees because Micky Dolenz of the monkees could not start the engine SAD EmoJI). *Fade to black*

LIST OF GEN 2 PIXIES
Offspring of Fergus Whimsifinado (Head Pixie the First) from Sanderson to Southmark. Most are interchangeable, but notable characters are bolded and marked with an asterisk.
Alternatively, click HERE to view a Dropbox/Google Sheets spreadsheet that lists the Gen 2 pixies, their ages during the frozen timestream, ages compared with Anti-Cosmo, and age difference from Sanderson (Basically a prettier and better organized version of this post).
This is a quick reference tool I made for author purposes and ages are not 100% exact to the year (H.P. doesn’t have his pixies exactly on the 500 year mark, after all).
*Fergus Whimsifiando - Head Pixie the First (Gen 1)
*Ennet Sanderson - Vice president of customer service; head of complaints department; H.P.’s personal assistant; Ivorie brand cowlick
*Cecil Hawkins - Sucks his thumb; has a bad hand; does budgeting work
*Alapin Wilcox - Fagigglyne addict; runs emergency response team
*Markell Longwood - Vice President of Pixies Inc. and H.P.’s heir
*Mitchell Caudwell - Foop’s therapist at Wish Fixers
*James Bayard - Kind of a goodball; marketing team
*Luke Madigan - H.P.’s personal secretary; likes birds; especially sneaky; needed glasses early
Oliver Graham - Pixie neotype in Eros Nest
Walter Keefe - In-vitro baby; has dysolfactya; manages the Labyrinth
Hunter Springs - Had a surrogate father
*Elliot McKinley - Extremely religious
Ralston - Emergency response team; annoying suck-up
Walters - Puts everyone else first; rooms with Caudwell/Bayard/Madigan
Thane - Tinkers with mechanics; texts smiley faces
*Charlie Palomar - H.P.’s favorite child; works at Wish Fixers
Cinna - Architect; appears in “Make You Proud” and “Rain Dance”
Kaufman - Known for his short temper
Saddler - Works with the Big Wand in Fairy World; Ivorie brand cowlick
Abernathy - Does concept test work; chronic scapegoat

New Post has been published on https://vacationsoup.com/epcot-international-flower-garden-festival/
The International Flower & Garden Festival at EPCOT
Tumblr media
The International Flower & Garden Festival is a treat for your eyes. This event is held every year in the early spring. We love to tour the festival to look at the amazing flower colors and imaginative topiary displays. But there is so much more! Things from rock concerts to a butterfly exhibit and everything between.
Tumblr media
The International Flower & Garden Festival will run from March 6th until June 3rd, 2019.
Garden Exhibits
EPCOT transforms into a large garden for the festival. There are about 70,000 bedding plants arranged like giant paintings. In the photo above, taken at the 2018 festival you can see a flower, butterfly and the sun. Crews go in every night to replace dead or faded flowers so that it always looks fresh and beautiful every day.

Topiary Displays
Located throughout the park are exquisite topiary displays in Disney characters. See Mickey, Minnie, Pluto, and Goofy at the entrance in a small garden in front of the Spaceship Earth ride. There were lines of people waiting for an empty spot in front of them for the family to get a few selfie pics. New this year is Bo Peep and Her Sheep, and a Playful Garden. Another one that the children loved was an entire car from the show Cars.

Themed Gardens
A variety of gardens are displayed throughout the park that will excite your senses. Stroll among bonsai trees, container gardens, tea gardens, and even a Shakespeare Garden. Learn about pollination, bees, tropical rain forests, and spices.
The Goodness Garden Butterfly House Presented by GoGo squeeZ
Also, in the photo above is the butterfly exhibit that was set up last year. If you get a chance to visit the butterfly exhibit it is well worth it and you might even get one to land on you. Inside you will see hundreds of butterflies from many different parts of the world. There is a chrysalis hatching area where you can watch the caterpillars emerge as the beautiful winged butterflies.

Spike’s Pollen-Nation Exploration
Another event running again this year is Spike’s Pollen-Nation Exploration. This is a scavenger hunt and will during The International Flower and Garden Festival. Spike is a cute looking honey bee and there are a dozen of them scattered among the gardens. You have to look for Spike in the gardens. To begin you have to buy a map of the sites where you can find him. Once you have filled in the map with the stickers for each Spike, you have to turn in the map and get a prize.
Egg-stravaganza Scavenger Hunt
A second scavenger hunt will run from March 16th until April 1st. In the Egg-stravaganza scavenger hunt, search for eggs with Disney characters on them.
Maps for both of these hunts can be purchased at several sites, including:

Souvenirs
Of course, it will be hard to not spend more on the many theme related items like T-shirts, mugs and trading pins.
No matter why you are going to The International Flower & Garden Festival it will be a great time. There is something for every member of the family.

$60M Versailles-Inspired Chateau on Long Island Is This Week’s Priciest Property
realtor.com
Oh la la. This week’s most expensive new listing on realtor.com® is a très chic property on Long Island modeled after Versailles and Château de Vaux-le-Vicomte in France, now listed for $60 million.
The stunning Maison Des Jardins looks like an old-world castle, but it was completed only last year. According to news reports, the owner—entrepreneur Raphael Yakoby—bought 8.38 acres in Old Brookville, NY, in 2010 for $3.25 million. Yakoby, a lover of all things French, commenced construction of the chateau-inspired structure two years later.
Yakoby worked with architects Michael J. Wallin and Douglas R. Schneider. Press materials note the project represents the owner’s “lifelong dream, brought to fruition by a team of architects, contractors and craftsman.” Every facet of the design uses traditional building materials and methods. No laminate floors here!
If you’re wondering how you would begin to decorate this Versailles on Long Island, you don’t have to. The home comes fully furnished. Listing agent Eloise Halpern of Douglas Elliman says the opulent decor features “$2.5M worth of lighting fixtures (Baccarat, Schonbek & Straus), the magnificent draperies and furniture (Stark & Scalamandre) … 19th-century marble fireplaces, spectacular Italian marble slabs, Christopher Peacock kitchen, character/rustic wood flooring in marvelous patterns, outdoor limestone loggia, extensive formal gardens and more.”
Halpern and Patricia Bischoff represent the property.

The 22,000-square-foot property has eight beds, 10 bathrooms, and five half-baths. It features multiple 19th-century marble fireplaces and the “highest-end everything,” according to the listing. The property is entered through 22-foot-high iron gates flanked by limestone piers that open to a quarter-mile drive planted with pear trees.
The wrought-iron details on the front door are a nod to Versailles. Construction details include a soft limestone facade, intricate ironwork, a Vermont slate roof, and geothermal heat. All the moldings are plaster and, due to size, some had to be created on-site.
Italian marble covers the floors. The stairway in the foyer was inspired the one at Le Petit Trianon at Versailles. Other luxe amenities include a movie theater, wine room, billiard room, and fitness center. The master suite includes dual bathrooms, a dressing room, and a 500-square-foot office.
The main level holds the public rooms, including formal living and dining rooms. Off the main ballroom is a covered loggia, which leads to the gardens and pool. The property also features an elevator, guest quarters, staff quarters, parking, and a garage.
Quietly shopped around for $100 million last summer before it was finished, the home is being offered officially now.
The Palace of Versailles has remained an inspiration to opulent home builders since it was transformed from hunting lodge to royal residence in the 17th century, notes the Wall Street Journal. (Remember the “Queen of Versailles“?)
But the North Shore of Long Island, known as the Gold Coast for its extreme wealth and vast estates, has a mythology of its own. The mansion-filled area is the site of the fictional estate in “The Great Gatsby.”
Now, it’s the home of the real-life Maison Des Jardins.
