Violist Caroline Buckman died without ever knowing that she had participated in the recording of a new Beatles song.

Violist Caroline Buckman died without ever knowing that she took part in the recording of the Beatles' new song "Now and Then", CBC.ca reports. "It is sad. On the other hand, I’m very proud,” said her mother, Erica Buckman.

In April 2022, more than a dozen musicians received a mysterious message from a music contractor in Los Angeles. They were asked if they could come to the studio in three days. “This is about Paul McCartney,” the invitation said.

The musicians were offered a so-called one-time contract for three hours, under which they would be paid at the rate. Those who received the message abandoned everything they were doing.

“Of course we all wanted to do it,” said violinist Charlie Bisharat.

Cellist Mia Barcia-Colombo performed at a concert in Miami on the eve of a morning studio session, rushed to the airport, got to Los Angeles by 6:00, rested for an hour and a half with her parents (they lived closer to the studio than she did), and went to record.

“It became a family matter to make sure I got there on time. (My parents said, 'Anything for Sir Paul,'" Mia recalls.

At Capitol Studios, the musicians were given sheet music for the song “Give & Take.” It was claimed that this was McCartney's solo project.

After the session, Sir Paul stayed and chatted with the musicians. “Wonderful person. This cannot be said about every artist,” Bisharat said.

Then the musicians had to wait. And wait. And wait some more. For 18 months, Bisharat searched the Internet and could not find any news about the project. In any case, the session participants had something to remember.

For example, Buckman received a copy of the sheet music autographed by McCartney. She framed it. As the violist’s partner Mitch Brown said, Caroline never asked her colleagues for an autograph in her entire career, and she worked with, among others, Brian Wilson, Neil Young and R.E.M.

At the time of working in the studio with Sir Paul, the violist had been battling breast cancer for five years. Unfortunately, the disease took over. Buckman died on March 5, 2023 at the age of 48. “For four minutes and eight seconds, which is how long one incredible song lasted, Caroline Buckman was a Beatle,” the publication writes.

Nigel Godrich definitely made his name with Radiohead, though my discussions on him seem to have contemplated his Beck collaboration as the bigger one. I agree, this shouldn't be seen as such despite his production of Mutations contributing to his standing and him tackling Sea Change showed he's up for Beck's emotional catharsis, though The Information does suffer a bit in comparison to these two. To be honest, Beck since Sea Change does have some problems, because that album presented him with the radical shift, which can be hard to recontextualize later on. Mind you, I think this can be possible, though I also believe Beck's trouble lie in the fact he became imitated and many of his followers showed a different set of tricks than him, whereas he kept using his own.

Time to ease into my Sunday morning. And what better way to gently wake up than with Jacintha singing James Taylor from her 2018 album “Fire & Rain” on the Groove Note label. Recorded by Michael C Ross, and mastered by Bernie Grundman, so you know the sonics are going to be superb (and they do not disappoint), but it’s Jacintha’s vocals that carry this album. Of course it doesn’t hurt that Groove Note lined up musicians who have actually played these songs with Taylor such as Lee Sklar, Dean Parks, Tim Pearce, Jim Cox, Russ Kunkel, and Charlie Bisharat, so the level of musicianship is top-o-the-line. While the melodies will be familiar, Jacintha’s presentation is her own, making this her album. Tribute yes, but not a copycat. I can’t recommend this hybrid stereo SACD highly enough (also available on vinyl). A perfect starting point for a lazy Sunday. “To study the self is to forget the self” Dōgen Lately, in my solitude, I have been studying the self, my self. I know this sounds like it’s going down the “self” ish rabbit hole. But it’s not. So stay with me please. I have been reflecting on the gravity of making music for most of my life. Specifically, recording professionally for 3 decades. After all, I began piano lessons at 6 years of age. I’m in it and it’s in me. Aldo, it’s interesting how the sheer nature of the piano, my muse and master, tends to be a lonely one. Whether practicing, rehearsing, composing, arranging, recording, producing or performing in varied diverse settings. I am often in all of this alone. True. But not true. This, this realization followed by a flood of thankfulness happened. In studying myself, I forgot myself. I concluded that the time had come for a “shout out loud” of love for all of the individuals (sound engineers, musicians, writers, visual artists and designers, and believers) that have become my collective holy tribe. That contributed to what is now a catalogue of 300 recorded tracks. (I didn’t count until I had to personally organize them for metadata info and genre labeling.) So. Thank you. I cherish.
