As U.S. conservationists continue to fight for federal protections that would cover gray wolves in the northern Rocky Mountains, research released Wednesday highlights just how important the apex predators are to the western United States.

The study was published in the journal BioScience and led by William Ripple, a scientist at Oregon State University (OSU) and the Conservation Biology Institute known for his work on trophic cascades and carnivores as well as his demands for climate action.

The paper uses gray wolves to show the trouble with "shifting baselines," which, "in ecology encapsulate the gradual and often unnoticed alterations in ecosystems over time, leading to a redefinition of what is considered normal or baseline conditions."

As the study details:

Gray wolves (Canis lupus) in North America have experienced a substantial contraction of their historical range, at one point almost disappearing from the contiguous 48 United States. However, their conservation is important in part because of the potential cascading effects wolves can have on lower trophic levels. Namely, the proliferation and changes to behavior and density of large herbivores following the extirpation or displacement of wolves can have major effects on various aspects of vegetation structure, succession, productivity, species composition, and diversity, which, in turn, can have implications for overall biodiversity and the quality of habitat for other wildlife.

"By the 1930s, wolves were largely absent from the American West, including its national parks," Ripple said in a statement. "Most published ecological research from this region occurred after the extirpation of wolves."

"This situation underscores the potential impact of shifting baselines on our understanding of plant community succession, animal community dynamics, and ecosystem functions," he continued.

The researchers examined journal articles, master's theses, and Ph.D. dissertations from 1955 to 2021 that involved field work in national parks in the northwestern United States for whether they included information on the removal of gray wolves.

They found that "in total, approximately 41% (39 of 96) of the publications mentioned or discussed the historical presence of wolves or large carnivores, but most (approximately 59%) did not. The results for the theses and journal articles were similar."

While the researchers focused on wolves, Robert Beschta, co-author and emeritus professor at OSU, noted that "in addition to the loss or displacement of large predators, there may be other potential anthropogenic legacies within national parks that should be considered, including fire suppression, invasion by exotic plants and animals, and overgrazing by livestock."

Ripple stressed that "studying altered ecosystems without recognizing how or why the system has changed over time since the absence of a large predator could have serious implications for wildlife management, biodiversity conservation, and ecosystem restoration."

"We hope our study will be of use to both conservation organizations and government agencies in identifying ecosystem management goals," he added.

Amaroq Weiss, senior wolf advocate at the Center for Biological Diversity (CBD), welcomed the study, tellingInside Climate News that "I think this is a really important paper, because sometimes science advances at a certain rate without a self-introspection."

"Nature is a really complex tapestry," she said. "It's woven together by threads that hold it together and keep it strong. When you start to pull threads out like you remove apex predators, the whole thing begins to unravel."

The paper comes amid a wolf conservation battle that involves Weiss' group. In February, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) determined that Endangered Species Act protections for the wolves in the northern Rocky Mountains were "not warranted."

Two coalitions of conservation organizations, including CBD, swiftly filed notices of their intent to sue over the decision if FWS didn't change course. After the legally required 60-day notice period passed, they filed the lawsuits in April.

Earlier this week, "the cases were voluntarily dismissed and immediately refiled to avoid any potential arguments from the defendants that the plaintiffs failed to give the secretary of the interior proper 60-days' notice under the Endangered Species Act," Collette Adkins, an attorney who leads CBD's Carnivore Conservation program, told Common Dreams in an email Thursday.

"Plaintiffs believe that their case was properly noticed," she said, "but we refiled to avoid any further disruption of the proceedings."

I’ve been wanting to do an art series of TURN characters as the constellations thanks to our favorite yet socially awkward Major Hewlett. However this project may be too ambitious even for me. Below you will find who I think is best represented by what constellation and why. Open for discussion and debate.

Major Hewlett: Perseus. He said it, therefore it is.

Anna Strong: Andromeda. Look above.

Abraham Woodhull: Ophiuchus the snake bearer. The actual snake in the garden or better yet, some greek mythology associates this constellation to Asclepius a physician who found a way to cheat death. A complex way of my interpretation is Abe gathering intel to keep the Continental Army alive to defeat the British.

Richard Woodhull: Libra the scale. I have no other explanation other than he’s a judge.

Caleb Brewster: Canis Major. His name “Caleb” means “faithful, devoted” and is at times associated with dogs. He’s the loyal bestie everyone wished they had.

Benjamin Tallmadge: Sagittarius. There are two official centaur constellations but, the zodiac one is usually thought of Chiron the most peaceful and wisest of centaurs. In the night sky, Sagittarius s positioned with his bow aiming at Scorpio avenging Orion’s death. Which brings us to…..

George Washington: Orion the Hunter. He may not be the best fighter but he is the Commander of the Continental Army therefore held in high esteem much like the mythical hunter.

Benedict Arnold: Scorpio. To wrap up this theme going on, a scorpion is a spiteful person or the symbolism of evil. In some greek mythology, the scorpion was sent to kill Orion.

Robert Townsend: Aquarius the Water Bearer. Sorry, that’s what you get for working in a coffee house. 💗☕️

John André: Lyra the harp. Charming and his fondness for music.

John Graves Simcoe………… if we’re going with Hewlett’s theme, Cetus the sea monster that Perseus saved Andromeda from. Personally I’d go with Hercules. Hear me out and it’s not because I’m a Simcoe apologist either. Everyone knows about the strength of Hercules and a hero he was for the 12 labors he’s done. I don’t believe Simcoe to be that black and white but rather a ton of grey. He has his own moral compass (pyxis) that he follows and Hercules did have a moment of madness which he killed his wife and children. Basically man went through a lot but accomplish good in the end.

Robert Rogers: Leo the Lion. Going with Simcoe’s theme of being Hercules and losing the Queen’s Rangers to the sociopath.

Bonus: Ensign Baker: Columba the dove. He was too pure for this world and I am not strong enough to think about it anymore.

Storia Di Musica #268 - Pearls Before Swine, The Use Of Ashes, 1970

Dei tre dischi che, finiti per caso uno vicino all’altro sulla mia scrivania mentre spolveravo la mia discoteca, due erano di questa band particolarissima, che delle immagini di opere d’arte rinascimentali ha fatto un suo tratto caratteristico. La band dei Pearl Before Swine si materializza attorno la figura del suo leader fondatore, Tom Rapp: eccentrico, geniale, appassionato, sceglie il nome per la sua band da un passo del Vangelo di Matteo: Non date le cose sante ai cani e non gettate le vostre perle davanti ai porci (pearls before swine ndt), perché non le calpestino con le loro zampe e poi si voltino per sbranarvi. Tutto quanto volete che gli uomini facciano a voi, anche voi fatelo a loro: questa infatti è la Legge ed i Profeti (Mt 7,6.12-14). Della sua infanzia, c’è un particolare che mi piace sempre ricordare: da un trafiletto del giornale locale conservato dalla madre, in un concorso canoro per bambini di Rochester, Minnesota, Tom Rapp arriva terzo davanti ad un giovane Robert Zimmerman di Duluth, che arriva 5°, il quale con tutta probabilità è il futuro Bob Dylan. Rapp cresce con l’amore per il folk, l’arrangiamento e gli strumenti musicali particolari, e ama cantare nonostante un sigmatismo della pronuncia, che rende la sua voce ancora più simpatica. Va a studiare in Florida, e nel 1965 fonda il gruppo con i suoi amici di college Wayne Harley (chitarre e mandolino), Roger Crissinger (tastiere) e Lane Lederer (basso) e con la convinzione che “se i Fugs pubblicano dischi, possiamo farlo anche noi”, tanto che mandano un demo alla stessa casa discografica dei Fugs, la ESP di New York. Che rimane ammaliata, e ingaggia i nostri per delle registrazioni con Richard Alderson. Il risultato nel 1967 è One Nation Underground: in copertina, un particolare de Il Giardino Delle Delizie di Hyeronimus Bosch, il disco è un folk acido che se parte dai grandi (Guthrie, Dylan, Joan Baez, Leonard Cohen) ne trasforma le atmosfere, per uno dei dischi più originali degli anni ‘60 statunitensi. Vende addirittura 200 mila copie, ma Rapp dirà che non vedrà mai un soldo. Il secondo disco con la ESP è ancora più bello: Balaklava (1968) ha in copertina Il Trionfo Della Morte di Peter Brueghel il Vecchio, sul retro sette disegni di Jean Cocteau e una frase lapidaria del poeta Victor Santayana: Soltanto i morti hanno visto la fine della guerra. Disco meraviglioso, si apre con la registrazione della voce e della tromba di uno dei 600 sopravvissuti tra i cavalieri inglese della battaglia di Balaklava, durante la Guerra di Crimea (1854). Finito il contratto con la ESP, Rapp si sposa con la naturalista olandese Elisabeth Joosten e firma con la Reprise. Scioglie la band, di cui rimane solo il nome, e si circonda di sessionisti di altissimo livello: Grady Tate, un grande della batteria jazz, Richard Greene, geniale violinista e flautista, Jim Fairs e altri, con cui pubblica These Things Too (1969). In copertina, un Cristo di Giovanni Bellini, atmosfere appena più curate, una sentita e bella cover di I Shall Be Released di Bob Dylan. Rapp va in Olanda con la moglie, e inizia lì a scrivere materiale per un nuovo disco: viaggiano sulla tratta inaugurale della nave Queen Elizabeth II, e vivono per mesi a Utrecht. Ritorna a Nashville, con una nuova schiera di musicisti, tra cui David Briggs e Charlie McCoy che fu uno dei più fidati musicisti di Dylan, persino Elizabeth che canta insieme a lui e registra The Use Of Ashes, che esce nel 1970. Il titolo prende spunto da un verso della canzone di apertura, uno delle perle di Rapp: vedendo la moglie pulire delle vecchie monete con della cenere, Rapp immagina The Jeweller che “ha un negozio all’angolo del viale” e con la cenere i gioielli li “rende brillanti\adora Dio con la cenere”. La canzone rappresenta al meglio lo sguardo sull’umanità minima tanto cara a Rapp, e anche al lavoro artigianale delle cose e verrà ripresa anni dopo dal supergruppo This Mortal Coil per una cover gotica ed elegantissima. C’è uno strumentale per un film, From The Movie Of The Same Name, c’è una Rocket Man, scritta il giorno dell’allunaggio di Neil Armstrong dell’Agosto del 1969, ispirata ad un racconto di Ray Bradbury dallo stesso titolo nella raccolta L’Uomo Illustrato (conosciuta in Italia anche come Il Gioco Dei Pianeti); il brano nasconde un’altra curiosità, se è vero che Bernie Taupin, il braccio destro e paroliere di Elton John, dichiarò di essersi ispirato a questo brano, e non a Bowie, per il brano Rocket Man, singolo di successo del 1972 dall’album Honky Château. Song For A Rose è un altro dipinto metafisico, metafora della delicatezza dell’esistenza e delle sue contraddizioni. Riegal è un duetto vocale marito e moglie dall’atmosfera esotica. God Save The Child è la canzone più “pop”, Margery è, nel solco dei grandi folksinger, un ricordo personale legato ad una donna. Rapp non perde l’occasione per dichiarare la sua idea di mondo: in When The War Began riprende i temi di Balakvala e dichiara senza esitazioni l’inutilità della guerra, ma il colpo di classe è in MS Rigel, ispirata alla storia vera della nave norvegese MS Rigel, affondata dagli aerei britannici il 27 Novembre 1944: trasportava prigionieri di guerra tedeschi, e siccome era scortata da due V-Boat, fu scambiata per una nave che trasportava militari. L’attacco inglese ne causò l’affondamento, e la conseguente morte di 2571 persone, tra prigionieri sovietici, polacchi, serbi, disertori tedeschi, norvegesi e militari tedeschi della nave. In copertina, un particolare di un arazzo probabilmente di fattura fiamminga del XV° secolo, che rappresenta La Caccia All’Unicorno, conservato al Metropolitan Museum di New York. Rapp, che rifiuterà di esibirsi a Woodstock proprio mentre registrava questo disco, continuerà per un paio di anni a suonare e comporre, fino al 1973, quando si ritira dalla scena musicale. Si iscrive all’Università, dove prende una laurea in Economia e nel 1984 in Legge, diventando avvocato civilista. Si trasferisce in Florida dove esercita la professione per anni, fino al 1997, quando un gruppo di artisti cultori dei suoi PBS gli dedica un album tributo, For The Dead In Space: Rapp ha come un sussulto, e pubblica dopo 25 anni dal suo ultimo disco (Sunforest del 1973) un ultimo meraviglioso disco, A Journal Of The Plague Year (1998) un ritorno al folk anni ‘60 con la classe e la genialità di un personaggio tanto singolare quanto misconosciuto, e del suo gruppo meraviglioso, meraviglioso anche per la copertine dei dischi.
