Rudolph "Butch" T. Ware III is an American historian and the Green Party's vice presidential nominee for the 2024 United States presidential election. Here are key points about him:
Academic Background:
Associate professor in the Department of History at the University of California, Santa Barbara
Previously taught at the University of Michigan and Northwestern University
Received his Ph.D. in history from the University of Pennsylvania in 2004
Research Focus:
Specializes in West African history, African-American history, and Islamic intellectual history
His work focuses on Islamic thought, anti-slavery movements in West Africa and the African Diaspora, and the intersection of race, religion, and revolutionary thought
Political Involvement:
Selected as Jill Stein's running mate for the Green Party's 2024 presidential campaign
Nomination announced on August 16, 2024, during an online livestreamed event
Personal Background:
Practicing Muslim
His selection alongside Stein (who is Jewish) has been noted for creating a diverse ticket
Academic Work:
Author of "The Walking Qur'an: Islamic Education, Embodied Knowledge, and History in West Africa," which has received positive reviews for its analysis of Islamic traditions in Africa
Political Stance:
Emphasizes addressing systemic injustice and building a sustainable, just, and peaceful world
Critical of the two-party political system in the United States
Criticism:
Some critics argue that his background is primarily academic, with limited direct involvement in social movements or political activism outside of academia
The selection of Ware as the Green Party's vice presidential nominee is seen as an attempt to create a historically diverse ticket, bringing together different religious and cultural backgrounds in opposition to current U.S. policies on issues like war, climate change, and economic inequality.

Ranked Choice Voting (RCV) is an electoral system that allows voters to rank candidates in order of preference. Here's a comprehensive overview:
How Ranked Choice Voting Works
Voters rank candidates in order of preference (1st choice, 2nd choice, 3rd choice, etc.).
If a candidate receives over 50% of first-choice votes, they win outright.
If no candidate gets a majority, the candidate with the fewest votes is eliminated.
Votes for the eliminated candidate are redistributed to voters' next choices.
This process repeats until a candidate has a majority.
Advantages of RCV
Determines strongest overall support: Reveals the candidate with the most support across the entire electorate, not just a passionate base.
Encourages civil campaigning: Reduces negative campaigning as candidates aim for second-choice votes.
Reduces wasted votes: Voters can support their preferred candidate without fear of "wasting" their vote.
Eliminates need for runoffs: Saves time and money by avoiding separate runoff elections.
Current Implementation
Statewide: Alaska and Maine use RCV for various elections.
Cities: 53 cities and counties in the U.S. use RCV, including New York City, San Francisco, and Minneapolis.
Military/Overseas: Several states use RCV for military and overseas voters in federal runoff elections.
Criticisms and Responses
Complexity: While slightly more complex than single-choice voting, data shows voters adapt quickly and turnout isn't negatively affected.
Cost: Initial implementation costs can be offset by eliminating runoff elections.
Delayed results: While final tallies may take longer, this ensures accurate and comprehensive results.
Conclusion
Ranked Choice Voting is gaining traction as a method to improve representation and reduce political polarization. While it requires some adjustment, its benefits in determining majority support and encouraging civil campaigning make it an increasingly popular electoral reform.

Nigel Godrich definitely made his name with Radiohead, though my discussions on him seem to have contemplated his Beck collaboration as the bigger one. I agree, this shouldn't be seen as such despite his production of Mutations contributing to his standing and him tackling Sea Change showed he's up for Beck's emotional catharsis, though The Information does suffer a bit in comparison to these two. To be honest, Beck since Sea Change does have some problems, because that album presented him with the radical shift, which can be hard to recontextualize later on. Mind you, I think this can be possible, though I also believe Beck's trouble lie in the fact he became imitated and many of his followers showed a different set of tricks than him, whereas he kept using his own.

THE BLUE PARADISE
1915
Tumblr media
The Blue Paradise is a three-act operetta with a book by Edgar Smith, music by Edmund Eysler and lyrics by Herbert Reynolds. It is based on the German operetta A Day in Paradise by Leo Stein and Bela Jenbch.  Additional musical numbers were by Sigmund Romberg, Leo Edwards and Cecil Lean.
The original production was produced by the Shuberts, with staging and scenic design by J.H. Benrimo, and choreography by Ed Hutchinson.
Set in Vienna, it tells the story of Mizzi, a flower girl at the Blue Paradise Inn, who must say goodbye to her sweetheart Rudolph, as he travels to America to find his fortune. When he returns many years later, however, he finds that the sweet girl he loved has turned into a bitter shrew.
Tumblr media
The musical is remembered not for its plot, but for containing one of Romberg’s runaway hit songs, “Auf Wiedersehn”.  It was also notable for being the Broadway debut of Vivienne Segal, who took over the leading role of Mizzi during out-of-town tryouts in Washington DC. It launched an impressive career.
Tumblr media
Speaking of out-of-town tryouts, The Blue Paradise played at Atlantic City’s Apollo Theatre on June 15, 1915.  Cecil Lean (Rudolph) was the star of note. Reviews were mixed.
“Miss Mayfield...her songs were delivered in a region of the head known in surgery as the occipital frontalis, and most of her lines were chanted, rather than spoken.” ~  LOUIS W. CLINE, PRSS OF ATLANTIC CITY
The out-of-town tour also played Providence RI, Hartford CT, Washington DC, Asbury Park NJ, and Long Branch NJ.
Tumblr media
Just days before the Broadway opening, producers postponed for a few days to make some last-minute adjustments to the cast. This was likely to give Vivienne Segal, who had recently replaced a performer said to be ill, more time to adjust to the principal part of Mizzi.
Tumblr media
The Blue Paradise opened on Broadway on August 15, 1915 at the Casino Theatre on Broadway and 39th Street. It was a smash hit.  At the end of May 1916, the show moved to the 44th Street Theatre to make way for another smash hit, Very Good Eddie. Eddie had been evicted from its first home, the popular Princess. Blue finished up at the 44th Street a month later with a record-setting run of 356 performances. It is now considered the fourth longest run of a book musical during the 1910s.
Tumblr media
In February of 1930, the Casino Theatre was demolished to make room for the expanding garment district. The 44th Street Theatre was razed in 1945 to add to the New York Times building.
A pre-air conditioning story about The Blue Paradise:
Tumblr media
“It was warm last night - very warm. It was the sort of a night that makes the theatre ono of the lost places the general public thinks of going. The real test of it theatrical production's merit Is the 87-in-the-shade evening. Half a house means It Is a hit; three-quarters a big success, and capacity a marvelous show good for a year on Broadway. The mediocre play cannot successfully combat heat, whereas It may struggle along fairly well against rain or cold. And all this brings me to my story, I stepped up to the box office at the Casino last night, possessing an ambition to see ‘The Blue Paradise.’ Good seats would be plentiful, I thought, because of the heat. Tickets for the last two seats on the lower floor were handed me and the treasurer said I was lucky to have arrived early enough to get them. The house was sold out.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the Fall of 1916, the show spawned three road companies that began in Chicago, Philadelphia, and Brooklyn, respectively.
Tumblr media
The song “Auf Wiedersehn” was heard in the 1932 musical short Mail Order Bride. In 1954, it was on screen again, sung by Helen Traubel, in the Sigmund Romberg biopic Deep in My Heart.
Tumblr media
The film premiered in Atlantic City on Christmas Eve at the Apollo Theatre on the Boardwalk, the same venue that had hosted the live out-of-town tryout of The Blue Paradise nearly 40 years earlier. Although it was only for the span of “Auf Wiedersehn” - that brings this blog full circle.

They notice two people living there in their absence: an old man reading the paper on a hammock on the porch and his son (Gottlieb), who stands in front of him with wild hair, buck teeth and a dress.] Mama: Home again, Captain. I'm sure my little Gottlieb knows nothing about it! Mama: Hmm! Better I look der kitchen upside down und make sure all iss vell by me!! [While everyone's distracted, Gottlieb nails Mama's dress to the curtains.]
[As Mama moves to leave, part of her dress tears off on the nail. Gottlieb, behind the curtains, laughs at his own antics.] Mama: EEK! Gottlieb: Haw!
[Mama angrily calls for the Kids, who stand in front of her, confused. They drop a toy rifle, whose barrel has been twisted into a knot. Gottlieb keeps laughing. Der Captain and Gottlieb's father walk off into another room.] Mama: Hans, Fritz, loafers! Come here diss minute you hear it! Kids: HUH? Sub-Letter: Now then, old dear, don't lose your 'ead. We'll just look around a bit and make sure the bloomin' place is alright, eh?
[Mama bends the Kids over her knee and spanks them. Gottlieb keeps standing right in front of them and giggling.] Mama: How many times must I say stop der mischief!! Gottlieb: Ha-ha, that's the time I fooled them slickers! Haw!!
[Mama drops the two off her knee, crying and sore. She storms off. Gottlieb points and laughs at them.] Mama: Und I varn you, any more monkey-shiners, und I bet me it giffs sumting smart!! Hans: BAW. Fritz: SO? Gottlieb: Tee-hee, smarties. Did y'never git left? Ha-ho! It serves y' right!!

Captain: No? Hans: Lummox! Gottlieb: What's up, Pa?
[The Kids pull the handle and run off, drenching der Captain.] Sub-Letter & Gottlieb: ?

[The family sits in the living room, finally home. Der Captain ponders his situation in a chair, der Inspector pours water out of the handle of a shovel into a cup, the Kids sit on the floor reading out of a songbook, and Mama carries a large tub filled with broken chinaware.] Captain: Bah! Time for today’s Rock Report,
Blondie recently released a previously unheard demo, titled "I Love You Honey, Give Me a Beer."
According to a press release, "I Love You Honey, Give Me a Beer" was recorded in 1980 and possibly written for Alan Rudolph's musical comedy Roadie, which starred Meat Loaf and Alice Cooper. The song, co-written by founding member and guitarist Chris Stein and singer Debbie Harry, eventually became "Go Through It" and appeared on the band's fifth album Autoamerican, which arrived in 1980.
Nazareth co-founder and guitarist Manny Charlton passed away on July 5 at the age of 80. No cause of death has been revealed. In a post on Nazareth's website, bassist Pete Agnew said he believes Charlton's death was "sudden and not illness related." "Manny was there from the beginning of Nazareth so we all came up together through the tough times and through the wonderfully successful years as the band became an international acclaimed outfit, " said Agnew. "His contribution as a musician was immeasurable." He added, "Not only was he a team player who loved jamming for hours at a time with the band and then sifting through the tapes for even more hours just looking to find the tiniest unable idea, he was never happier than when he was sitting in the producer's chair making records and searching for that special 'racket' (noise) as he called it, that he was always trying to create."
Ringo Starr's annual "Peace & Love Birthday" event took place on July 7, his 82nd birthday. The event featured Ringo beaming his traditional "Peace and Love" message into Earth's orbit. Ringo gave the "launch" command from the event in Los Angeles to the Artemis Space Network Mission Control Center in Houston, beginning a musical space mission of Peace and Love to orbit the world and travel across the universe. The Beatles legend and his wife Barbara Starkey were joined on his birthday by family and friends, including current All Starrs Steve Lukather, Edgar Winter, Colin Hay, Warren Ham and Gregg Bissonette, as well as friends Benmont Tench, Jim Keltner, Richard Marx, Matt Sorum, Ed Begley Jr., Linda Perry, Diane Warren, Roy Jr. and Alex Orbison.
They gathered together in Los Angeles and at noon gave the traditional "Peace and Love" exclamation. This year Artemis Music Space Network, through the International Space Station (ISS), amplified that message not only to the entire planet but up into Earth's orbit and to the stars.

Novena to Saint Teresa Benedicta of the Cross (Edith Stein)
Day 9 – Sunday, August 9th, 1942 The Auschwitz Extermination Camp
Auschwitz was at that time a small provincial Polish town, which was to give its name to the notorious concentration camp, opened nearby by order of Himmler for political prisoners on April 27, 1940. The first camp was rather small in size and was called, subsequently, Auschwitz I. In October 1941, a far more extensive camp was set up, named after a neighboring village, Auschwitz II-Birkenau (Encyclopaedia Judaica Vol. 3, Coll. 854-871). From March 1942, Jews were directed to the second camp.
Mass murders of Jewish prisoners by Zyklon B (prussic acid) gas was instituted at Birkenau as from January 1942, at the instigation of Adolf Eichmann, who was in overall command of the execution of the “Final Solution” of the Jewish Problem by genocide, decided on by the Nazis at Wansee in 1941. The gassing continued for two years and ten months, during which time a million Jews perished in the camp.
The convoys arrived at the rate of three or four a day; they were usually met at the platform by the Camp Commandant, Rudolph Hoess, later executed for war-crimes, and the infamous Dr. Mengele, who performed the “Selektion”, strong prisoners being separated for forced labor in mines and factories, the remainder being consigned for immediate “elimination.”
The first transport of prisoners from Holland arrived in July 1942; the one carrying our Saint was, perhaps, the third, being preceded by a transport of men which had reached the camp that afternoon.
The newcomers were taken to barracks and told to leave their clothes on a numbered peg, to be retrieved after the shower, which they were falsely led to believe would follow. Women usually had their hair cut off. The prisoners had then to walk four hundred meters along a path till they came to a large room, with tubes running across the ceiling. Force was used to get them to enter, when necessary. The metal doors were locked, levers operated and the gas introduced into the rooms. Twenty to twenty-five minutes later, electric-pumps evacuated the gas, allowing special commando-units to enter and empty the chambers. Not all the victims were dead. Gold dentures were removed and the corpses carted away to be thrown into a common fosse. Crematoria had not yet been installed at Auschwitz; but, later, to obliterate traces of their crimes, the Nazis exhumed the corpses and had them burnt.
From the moment of the arrival of a convoy to the extermination of the victims, no more than an hour and a half would elapse, as a rule. The killing of human beings became a monotonous routine.
Saint Edith, her companions and a thousand other Hebrew Catholics died in the gas-chambers of Auschwitz II-Birkenau on the morning of August 9th from suffocation by prussic acid fumes. She then entered into her glory, accompanied, as we like to believe, by many others.
Some Hebrew Catholic Companions of Saint Edith in her Ordeal
Saint Edith Stein was accompanied by a group of Hebrew Catholics throughout her ordeal; they lived with her, prayed with her, shared her spiritual sentiments, and died, most of them, together with her in the same gas-chamber. They are the rays of light that scintillate around our Saint’s crown of glory. Divine Providence wanted to give the world an example of an ideal Hebrew Catholic Community, though one assembled under duress and for a short period only.
We recall a few names, those most closely associated with Saint Edith in her trial.
Rosa, Edith’s sister
She was the only member of the Stein family to follow Edith into the Church, delaying her entry until the death of her mother, so as to spare the latter the suffering her entry would have occasioned her. She became a Tertiary Carmelite and rendered service to the Nuns at Echt, from where she left with her sister, Edith, for Auschwitz.
Dr. Bromberg and his family
The Doctor, his wife, son and daughter travelled in the transport from Amersfoort to Westerbork. They survived the war, as by a miracle. Mrs. Bromberg, who was very close to Edith, left a fine testimony to her bearing during the two days Edith spent in the camp. The son was ordained a priest in the Dominican Order after the war: Fr. Ignatius Bromberg, O.P.
The Löb family
The father was a Dr. Löb; of his five children, two became Trappist priests, two Trappistines, and one, a Trappist lay-brother. The two priests deployed an admirable ministry amongst the prisoners, proving a benediction to them in their distress. All were to die with Edith and Rosa.
Sister Judith Mendez da Costa
Her family had left Portugal in the 16th century to settle in Amsterdam. She became a Dominican nun and was conventual in Bilthoven from where she was carried off by the Gestapo on August 2nd. Her distant Portuguese origin provided an excuse, so that she was set free for a while and returned to her convent on the 15th August. On the 25th February 1944, she and the entire Portuguese community were transferred from Westerbork to Theresienstadt camp and from there to Auschwitz (16th May) where they were all gassed. Her brother and sister died in the torment. Sister Judith managed to send to her Superior a detailed description of her stay in Westerbork, from August 4th to August 15th, during which time she met Saint Edith.
Alice Reis
She entered the Church in 1932, Edith Stein standing as her godmother. Two years later she entered the Sisters of the Good Shepherd as a postulant. Circumstances in Germany being what they were at the time, she was sent to Holland. On account of her asthma, she was not accepted as a religious, but remained on as a lay-helper to the Sisters in several of their establishments. At 5 o’clock on the morning of August 2nd, she was snatched from her convent at Almelo by the Gestapo and sent to Amersfoort camp, from where she accompanied our Saint on the journey to Auschwitz.
Dr. Ruth Kantorowicz of the Ursuline Convent at Venlo
She had been an old friend of Edith’s. She was arrested on August 2nd and carried off to Amersfoort and then in a goods-train to Hooghalen. She was one of those who were forced to walk across fields, woods and hedges to the Westerbork camp. In answer to an urgent note, the Ursulines sent her supplies with two gentlemen. These saw her in the camp with Edith Stein, both wearing the yellow star-shaped patch. She remarked that the Trappist priests had not been able to celebrate Holy Mass for them. She left with Edith for Auschwitz.
Dr. Meirowsky
Since 1940, she had been resident in the lodge of the Trappistine Abbey near Tilburg. She was a medical doctor of Polish-Jewish origin, acquainted with our Saint with whom she had exchanged several letters. At Tilburg, she rendered valuable services to the community as doorkeeper and community doctor. She was a member of the Dominican Third Order and was regarded by the Trappistines as one of themselves.
In a letter addressed to her confessor from Westerbork, dated “Transfiguratio, 6, VIII.” she expressed the most admirable spiritual sentiments, showing to what extent our Saint was seconded in her intentions by other Hebrew Catholics.
We quote the following passages from her letter:
“I want to send you my last greetings and to tell you that I have complete confidence in God and have surrendered myself entirely to His will. Even more — I regard it as a grace and privilege to be driven along this road under these conditions, a witness to the words of our good Fathers and shepherds in Christ.
“If our sufferings have been increased somewhat then we have received a double portion of grace and a glorious crown is being prepared for us in heaven. Rejoice with me. I am going forward unshaken, confidently and joyfully — like the Sisters who are with me — to testify to Jesus Christ and to bear witness to the Truth in company with our Bishops. We are going as children of Our Holy Mother, the Church; we will unite our sufferings with the sufferings of our King, our Saviour and our Bridegroom, sacrificing ourselves for the conversion, for the Jews, for those who persecute us, so that all may know the peace of Christ and his Kingdom. Join with me in thanking God for this great favor by singing an exultant Magnificat.”
The letter was signed, Sister M. Magdalena Dominica (in the world, Dr. Meirowsky).
In our humble option, the sentiments that emanate from Dr. Meirowsky’s letter are no less sublime than those expressed by the early Christian martyrs as they went to their death by fire, by torture and by the lions, in the arenas of the Roman Empire.
Gospel Readings
“When they reached a place called Gethsemane, he said to his disciples, ‘Sit here while I pray’ and he took Peter and James and John with him. Horror and dismay came over him and he said to them, ‘My heart is ready to break with grief; stop here and stay awake.’ Then he went forward a little, threw himself on the ground and prayed that, if it were possible, this hour might pass him by. ‘Abba, Father all things are possible to thee; take this cup away from me. Yet not what I will, but what thou wilst.’” Mark 26: 32-36
“As they led him away to execution they seized upon a man called Simon from Cyrene, on his way back from the country, put the cross on his back and made him walk behind Jesus carrying it.
“Great numbers of people followed, many women among them, who mourned and lamented over him. Jesus turned to them and said, ‘Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me; no, weep for yourselves and your children. For the days are surely coming when they will say “Happy are the barren, the wombs that never bore a child, the breasts that never fed one.” Then they will start saying to the mountains, “Fall on us,” and to the hills, “Cover us.” For if these things are done when the wood is green, what will happen when it is dry?’” Luke 23: 26-31
Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory be (Any suitable prayer may be said here) Saint Edith, Pray For Us!
