My Archive of Our Own Wrap-up

I wanted to put together a thank you to all the fanfic writers who have gotten me through this year.

This wrap-up is me going through my history month by month to see which fics I’d visited the most (because you can be damn sure I read through them over several days, again and again).

So this is a celebration of the wide variety of fics I’ve read and/or bookmarked and/or subscribed to. Thank you to every writer on this list for keeping me entertained.

To every fanfic writer I've had the pleasure of reading the words of, and there are so many more of you than just this list of people, I want to thank you so very much of trusting your creativity to us readers. You are my rock, my joy, my comfort, and so many other supporting adjectives that I just want to give you all hugs and money for the holidays.

My first fic of 2024: dismantle the sun by StarryCleric

Summary:

Beau shudders and holds Caleb's hand, which he squeezes back tentatively. She can feel how it shakes in her grip. She does her best to steady him, despite the fact that she wants to shake apart herself and completely fall to pieces. “I am going to hazard a guess here,” Caleb says softly, “that we may have been drugged.” --- Tonight was supposed to be a fun night off. Unfortunately for Beau and Caleb, the universe has other plans.

His hands were bare, free from the gloves he so often wore when they were together on the rink, and the heat of his palm burned straight through the denim of Yuuri’s jeans. He slipped his own hand beneath the table and found Victor’s. Hidden from sight, their fingers began to flirt and play. A secret conversation all their own that needed no words. Yuuri was aware that at some point—a moment in time he couldn’t quite place—Victor had become his boyfriend. There wasn’t a single instant when it happened. It was a slow awareness, as if Victor had silently been asking the question for months now, and Yuuri had been giving him the answer a little more with each passing day.

Summary:

That, they can handle, or find ways to handle. They are not prepared for the resurgence of an old and familiar evil that threatens to destroy the tenuous family they’ve built. Summary:

Summary:

She’s hot. She’s not usually hot. Blankets can be kicked off, but not this time. She’s also sore. She’s not usually sore, either. Muscles can be tender after battle, but not this time. Vex prys one bleary eye open, attempting to take in her surroundings. It’s her bed: check. Her room: check. Her blanket: check. A warm body next to her: check? A heavy arm draped over her belly: check?! Both eyes open now (literally and figuratively), she slowly rotates her head on the pillow to look at the foreign body next to her, smiling when she sees a floof of light-colored hair tucked carefully next to her shoulder. She can’t help herself and sighs contently, making some strands of his unruly tufts wave and ruffle. Her Percy: BIG check with a heart drawn around it.

Critical Role (The Mighty Nein), rated T. Completed 2022-04-06.

Of all the ways Essek thought he might find himself staring down mortality, his magic making a cancer of his lonely heart never even entered his consideration. But then, his calculus has never been able to account for the Mighty Nein. There is a remedy for his illness, of course. There is always a way to unwind magic, but there is always a price. The cost of Essek’s life, now that he’s contracted Hanahaki’s disease, can be paid two ways—one is higher than Essek can bear and the other, well. The other can only be paid by someone else. And if Essek could ask that, then he wouldn’t be sick at all, would he?

Baldur's Gate, rated M. Last Updated 2024-02-16.

Echo has lived her life tucked away in the forests of Tethir, learning magic through the pulse of nature and the songs of creation. She's good with magic, but not people, which isn't really a problem until she's scooped up by mind flayers and has to get along with six strangers lest they all share a tentacle-y doom. And she manages to get along with most of them -- but then there's Gale of Waterdeep. Despite a terrible first impression, she finds he is actually much kinder than all the mansplaining would suggest. This is a series of relationship scenes about my weird little mushroom hermit, a wizard who shows compassion and arrogance really can coexist, and how academic rivalry is like first base for wizards. Spoilers up to Act 2 for main plot and Gale's romance.

Dungeons and Dragons: When Tuck fears that he's finally reached the point of no return--the moment that will break his pact with his sister and force him to turn against his new friends--the rest of the party prove him wrong, spearheaded by Vayl's love and devotion.

I wasn't familiar with the song but--assuming Googling the lyrics actually lead me to the correct song--I definitely appreciate the indirect recommendation! (The entirety of the song then colored my final response. I'm also sorry it ended up making me think of some of my D&D babies and not an "actual" fandom, lol.)

You cannot convince me that as soon as Gwen was old enough to be interested in science Percy didn’t almost vibrate out of his armchair at the prospect of running experiments with her on balance recovery with/without a tail or other fun “I can do this and my parents/siblings can’t” phenomena. You simply can’t.

The fluff number? Yeah! The weird thing with the Warriors fics too. NGL I was expecting twins relationship to beat out the toxic lesbians (affectionate), I haven't thought of/written Imodna in a while vs constantly being obsessed with the codependent twins.

9. Which do you prefer, hot coffee or cold coffee? Cold/iced coffee, even in the winter. I always want to drink my coffee as soon as I get it and I don't want to have to wait for hot coffee to cool down to a drinkable temperature, lol.

25. Perfume/body spray or lotion? Perfumes and body sprays are definitely my preference for "smell good" products, because I usually limit my lotions to hydrating/moisturizing ones for my chronic dry skin.

29. How do you like your shower water? It depends on my body temperature at the time; if I'm cold, I tend to prefer really hot (almost blistering) water, and if I'm already feeling hot, then I prefer cool (but never ice cold) water.

What’s a sound you hate? what about love?: I hate constant sounds, like someone keeps making the same noise over and over. Or like when my dog chews her bone on the hardwood. I love the sound of violins or saxophones. It can be the crappiest song even but I’m there for the violins or saxophones. Makes me feel all warm.

Do you drive? if so, have you ever crashed: I do. I only got my license when I was 22, so about theee years. I was rear ended last year. Everybody was ok.

Do you have any obsessions right now?: um I’d like to say no but I’m sure I probably do. I love The Crown and Stranger Things and Fantastic Beasts and PG Tips tea recently. Been drinking that stuff on tap lol

What’s the worst injury you’ve ever had?: I get hurt a lot and I’m a big weenie about it so all the injuries I think are horrible are probably pretty minor. I got stitches on my head when I was a toddler cuz I broke a glass. More recently, I got stitches in my finger after slicing it open at work.

Do you tend to hold grudges against anyone who’s done you wrong?: I don’t think I hold grudges, I just learn where and who to be careful around.

For the commentary ask game:

“We’ll be sure to protect you, darling,” she assured him before she winked.

The same damnable wink that stole his breath on the day they’d been introduced to each other.

He cleared his throat and, gripping his book tightly, he stood up. “I… I do appreciate that, Miss Vex’ahlia. Your confidence is certainly a comfort. But if you’ll excuse me, I believe now would be a good time to retire for the evening.” He gave her a bit of a stiff nod and stepped past her towards the staterooms.

“‘Vex,’ darling,” she called over her shoulder.

He paused and turned to look back in her direction with a questioning look.

“You can just call me ‘Vex.’ If you’d like.”

“I… I will keep that in mind.” A beat. “And… you may simply call me ‘Percy.’” Another beat before he echoed, “If you’d like.”

“Of course, darling. I hope you rest well tonight.”

I first want to say how much I appreciate the love you have for this silly AU; if nothing else, it's giving me a little bit more motivation to plot out an entire fic to expand upon.

As for the commentary bit... Ahem.

SO.

One of my favorite parts about (early) Perc'ahlia are the moments where Percy is so disarmed by Vex's personality, the way he bluescreens when she turns her flirting on him. The first bit of the passage you selected (from Vex's teasing to Percy's "Well, I don't know how to process this, so I'm removing myself from the situation") was my way of playing with that. And I had to have a Vex wink in there somewhere.

Then, in the second half where they're sharing their preferred names with each other, it was my way of futzing around with the order of events from the film's perspective. Like, I love and adore the scene where Evy and Rick are drinking at Hamunaptra (and I may still find a way to work that in with this AU), but it seemed much more likely for Percy and Vex to have a similar interaction earlier on.

And specifically for the little bit where Percy echoes her wording ("if you'd like") is just a personal thing I've noticed I tend to do as part of writing couple's banter. There's just something that makes my own brain go brrr with the (often teasing) play on each other's words, so it's not that surprisingly I threw that in here where I could.
